ABOUT THE FILM: Years after her Indian family was forced to flee their home in Uganda by the dictatorship of Idi Amin, twentysomething Mina (Sarita Choudhury) finds herself helping to run a motel in the faraway land of Mississippi. It’s there that a passionate romance with a charming carpet cleaner Demetrius (Denzel Washington) challenges the prejudices of their conservative families and exposes the rifts between the region’s Indian and African American communities.

Join Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts for a virtual conversation with three Memphis music video and visuals creators as they discuss their process and artistry from various perspectives. In conversation with moderator Jim Thompson is Lawrence Matthews, aka Don Lifted (musician, director), 35 Miles (Unapologetic visual), and Laura Jean Hocking (director).

Shoot & Splice is a FREE filmmaker forum presented by Crosstown Arts and Indie Memphis, featuring a wide variety of technical, educational, and unique topics of interest to the Memphis filmmaking community.

 

Film Workshop + Festival

this workshop gives participants the chance to script, shoot, edit, and screen their own independent, original films—all in one week. we’ll make use of Crosstown Arts’ brand-new digital lab to edit, and then we’ll premiere all films at a mini-film festival on the last Friday of the workshop. led by Crosstown Arts’ professional videographer, Justin Thompson, each participant will receive a DVD with all the participants’ films.
