Last year’s Indie Memphis festival winner for Best Documentary Feature was Cane Fire, a film that makes brilliant use of archival footage to illustrate and explore labor exploitation and inequality in Hawaii. Join Cane Fire director Anthony Banua-Simon and executive producer Steve Holmgren to talk about their use of archival footage in the film, securing rights to archival footage, ways to find archival footage, and the various creative processes filmmakers use when working with archival footage.

Shoot & Splice: Film Distribution with Dedza
What happens after the festival run of a film? To answer this and more, meet the founders of Dedza Films, a new distribution initiative dedicated to "curating and facilitating the next wave of filmmakers with a focus on underrepresented communities and early works of emerging storytellers." They launched on June 11 with the anthology of short films, "Who Will Start the Fire" (currently available in the Indie Memphis virtual cinema).
In this virtual Shoot & Splice forum, Aaron Hunt and Kate Gondwe will describe what the distribution world is like, why they started Dedza, and how an independent filmmaker might be able to find distribution for a feature or short film.
