New work by Tampa, Florida-based artist Ezra Johnson in the Screening Room.
Color Schemes: The Value of Intensity
Group exhibition featuring artists whose use of color is a primary consideration in their work. Our senses are affected by the vibrations of color immediately and intrinsically. This exhibition will focus on the meaning, sensitivity, and passion that the intensity of color creates.

New work by Crosstown Arts resident artist Olaniyi R. Akindiya Akirash. This exhibition looks deep into the immigration issues that plague our society. It has become a big bone that has stuck in our throat, difficult to chew or swallow. It is a nightmarish, poisonous trauma that has stained our history forever. |

The Mystic is a time set aside each month to experience the undefinable together through music, dialogue and silence. The Mystic is not affiliated with any defined belief system, but is a shared listening experience intended to deepen our understanding of one another. The Mystic is hosted by a rotated panel including Rabbi Micah Greenstein, Chris Miner, Dr. Scott Morris, Dr. Sonia Walker, and Kirk Whalum, with a variety of musical guests.This month: Dr. Morris will facilitate and Shaila Karkera, a practitioner of Hindu, will be the guest host. Students will study a piece from Akirash's work in Asiko: Moments, on display in the East Gallery. Then they'll sketch inside his gallery exhibit. Afterward, in the East Atrium, students will finish their work with acrylic paint. They will do this for three weeks, completing 2-3 works, which will be displayed in a pop-up gallery during the final week (December 15-20). This three-part workshop will be held on December 3, 10, and 17. This workshop is for students in the 8th-12th grades.

The final show of the Aaron James and Estes fall series. Aaron James & Estes started with an acoustic show back in October, followed by a collaborative show in November. Now they're ending their series with a rock show at Crosstown Arts' 430 Gallery. Half of all ticket sales are being donated to Memphis Rox, the non-profit rock climbing facility in Soulsville.

Live music, hot cocoa, performances, tours, art exhibitions, and more. During this event, Crosstown Arts fall 2019 session resident artists will open their studios to the public in a behind-the-scenes look at the residency program. Residents will present musical performances, readings, visual art, and more. Free and open to the public. This event is happening concurrently with the annual Crosstown Concourse holiday lighting party.

Patrons will engage with work from Color Schemes: The Value of Intensity, on view in the West Gallery, before choosing a color to represent their current mood. Using colorful painted objects, participants will create their own still-life sculpture using their chosen color as the focal point of their arrangement. They will then use oil chalk and black paper to create a colorful still-life picture of their arrangement.

In October 1985, Britain witnessed a spate of civil disturbances in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and in urban centers of London. These were violent, tragic events, marked by the death of an elderly black woman, Joy Gardner, and a white policeman, Keith Blakelock . HANDSWORTH SONGS (BLACK AUDIO FILM COLLECTIVE/JOHN AKOMFRAH)/1986/58 minutes) takes as its point of departure these events and the inability of the British media to go beyond its concern with demonizing or rationalizing the rioters and their motives, to break the anxiety-driven loop of morbid responses to the presence of blacks in Britain. |

Twenty-two artists converge at Crosstown Arts to create original works that explore today’s America. Up in Arms Collective was born out of the need for the dance community to respond to what is happening in America in an open and affirming environment. What originally began as a community of diverse Memphis dance artists has since grown to include local filmmakers, actors, and artists.

The band of seasoned Memphis musicians derives their name from Bland’s 1961 hit “Turn On Your Love Light.” Their sound is completed with the soulful voice of bluesman John Nemeth. |
