One of Memphis music icons Sam Phillips’ favorite sayings was, “if you’re not doing something different, you’re not doing anything.” With a unique ensemble sound and surprisingly diverse repertoire, the Memphis Ukulele Band is firmly rooted in Memphis music’s maverick tradition.
On a quiet night at the legendary Sun Studio, three friends and local music veterans decided to form a ukulele band. Fast forward a few years and two additional members later, and they have opened for Jake Shimabukuro, released two albums, played acclaimed festivals such as Folk Alliance and Americana Fest, and headlined Kauai Farm Bureau County Fair on Kauai, Hawaii. They’ve been featured on PBS on Sun Studio Sessions, DittyTV, Music City Roots and NPR’s internationally syndicated Beale Street Caravan.
Memphis is known as the birthplace of many musical styles, and the Memphis Ukulele Band is firmly in that rich, diverse tradition, playing everything from rockabilly to the blues, pop to Gospel..
In both live performances and on their recordings, Memphis Ukulele Band’s covers and originals exude pure fun while exploring the genre-bending range of the ukulele.
In 2026 they will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their eponymous debut album on Bluebarrel Records.
