Johnathan Payne

The objects Johnathan Payne make exist within the scope of performativity and ephemerality, or attempt to evoke these themes through process and form. He intentionally embellishes, obscures, and deconstructs surfaces to convey the migratory and temporal nature of gestures, mediums, and pictures within his art practice. Payne’s perception of marginality is reflected in his studio work, which locates a radical space of experimental formalism where multiplicity, repetition, and divergent images, techniques, and materials converge.

“I am currently working between drawing, painting, collage, installation and fibers, creating new systems of queer gridded works that center the medium of paint and the comic image as a decorative material.”
