Aubree Penney

Aubree Penney is a Memphis-raised, Dallas-based independent curator who received an MFA with a distinction in Curating from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Combining her background in English literature with eight years of experience in contemporary art, she specializes in destabilizing relationships between form and content, reimagining accessibility measures as creative sites, and decolonizing institutional display policies. Recent research involves borders, boundaries, and embodiment.

“I never recognized how productive my anger could be until I began my curatorial practice. I found myself seething in exhibitions at decisions regarding labels, plinth heights, and audio descriptions, and I realized that this was where I belong, focusing on overlooked aspects of the contemporary art world, recognizing them as spaces rife with power disparities.  As I work to combat colonialist and ableist sensibilities embedded in policy choices, I have found both a space to rage as well as a means of channeling that rage into innovative art display.”
