Workshop Description:
At Black Mountain College, Joseph Albers gave his students an exercise called the matière inviting them to explore their surroundings and collect materials, paying close attention to their visual and tactile qualities. Matières are ephemeral sculptural arrangements comprised of found materials. Amy Sillman and Munro Galloway created an assignment called Color Walk that asks participants to wander within their environment following a color or colors considering the use, context, and associations related to specific colors or combinations. Both exercises encourage careful consideration of what might usually be overlooked and ask the observer to notice context and contrast, similarity and difference.

Inspired by these prompts, participants in this workshop will be asked to take a walk in a particular location that influences how they think about their artwork. Participants will be asked to observe color and texture and the material qualities of this location and to bring found materials back into the studio.  Consideration of color, texture, and unexpected juxtapositions will inspire our experimentations with paint and process. Further instruction and suggested reading to follow.

This event is supported by Lifeworks in conjunction with Crosstown Arts.
