Crosstown Arts presents James Sexton: The Otis Mission in The Green Room
As a drummer, James Otis Sexton is a world-class talent, having performed or recorded with the likes of En Vogue, Amy Grant, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Branford Marsalis, Kirk Whalum, BeBe Winans, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, Stevie Wonder, & many more.
Primarily known for his drumming. James is also a composer & arranger. Having studied composition & jazz performance, at the University of Memphis, the Otis Mission, is a culmination of that time along with many more years of performing with a vast array of artists, across many genres. This would undoubtedly give birth, to his eclectic style of writing.
While one could broadly describe James’ compositions as jazz fusion, that would belie the stylistic versatility of the band, as the band will navigate charts with stop-time phrases and unison lines in the classic jazz fusion approach, yet ranging from funk to salsa to reggae to gospel.
