Fred Schepisi’s internationally-acclaimed 1978 period masterpiece is Australia’s canonical equivalent of 12 YEARS A SLAVE. Visually enthralling and emotionally resonant filmmaking, with a central violent eruption that still shakes audiences to their core. THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH is the shocking tale of an Aboriginal man driven to madness and revenge. Jimmie (Tommy Lewis) is a young half-caste raised in the early 20th century countryside — a boy initiated by his tribe but educated by a stern minister. Jimmy finds a white bride while performing back-breaking farm work, but cannot escape racist oppression. Fired without pay and discovering that he may not be the true father of his child, Jimmy cuts a bloody path of retribution through the society which forsook him.

The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent, international, historically significant, artistic, experimental, cult, underground and documentary features.
