Utilizing fabric, paper, paint, and other provided materials, participants will create art pieces inspired by Keiko Gonzalez’s abstractions on view in “STUDIOS.” These pieces will be showcased in a pop-up gallery at the end of the exhibition.

Over the course of several sessions, students will amass a body of work based upon specific prompts, such as “choose a person/scene in one of Crosstown Arts’ spaces.” Students will create a sketch with colored pencils and oil pastels, using Susan Lichtman’s work in “Here Is Where We Meet” as inspiration. This workshop is held in conjunction with the “Here Is Where We Meet” exhibition on view in the Crosstown Arts West Gallery.
Students will be given samples of writing , and then they’ll create a piece of visual art that represents or reflects that writing sample. Participants will use will use watercolor, colored pencil, crumpled paper, wood, fabric, and paint to create 2D or 3D works. These pieces will amass into a collection that will be showcased in a pop-up ….

Inspired by the work of Joey Slaughter, participants will engage in a conversation about controversial topics before spending 10 minutes creating visual representations of how the conversation affected them via drawings of wavelengths.

Focusing on the work of Jia Wang, participants will explore their past relationships through a community art project to be displayed in Crosstown Concourse following the exhibit. 
Jia Wang’s work is currently on display in Residual Imprint in the Crosstown Arts East Gallery.

Jazz tribute to Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian featuring Chip Henderson (guitar), Alvie Givhan (piano), Earl Lowe (drums), John Lux (tenor sax, clarinet), and Tim Goodwin (acoustic bass).

Scott Carter’s work explores the intersection of music and sculpture. In this short experience, participants will enjoy a private tour of the Counterpoint exhibition in the West Gallery, immediately followed by a musical demonstration inspired by Carter’s works.

Focusing on the work of Scott Carter, participants will be challenged to create instruments from re-purposed materials.
Scott Carter’s work is currently on display in Counterpoint in the Crosstown Arts East Gallery.

Crosstown Arts staff will moderate a conversation with Mauricio Calvo and Sharolyn Peyton exploring how sexuality and sexual expression are linked to, and affected by, social and civic politics.

Focusing on the work of artist Wang Chen, participants will explore their inner-selves and challenge the concept of alter egos to create a puppet representation of themselves.
Wang Chen’s work is currently on display in The Sin Park at the Crosstown Arts Screening Room and East Atrium.

Panelists include filmmakers from The Southern Documentary Project, Mary Knight (SINGING OUT), Rex Jones (BEAUTIFUL JIM), and John Rash (NEGRO TERROR). Moderated by photographer and producer Andrea Morales, the panelists will discuss various aspects of producing music documentaries; from building relationships with musicians to representing diversity in music in the south. Crosstown youth programming students, with Maddie McGhee’s guidance, created comic pieces that exemplify their interests and imagination. We invite the public to see their finished works during an open crit featuring their work and light refreshments. 

Join Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts for a very special and unique event: Filmmaker Speed Meetings! Think of it like Speed Dating but for filmmaking guidance and mentorship. This is a great opportunity for new/rising/new-to-Memphis filmmakers to connect with some industry professionals who are looking to hear what you are working on. 

These meetings are intended for filmmakers with little experience and/or are new to Memphis and have not had many networking opportunities.  Advance sign-up is required (click on this event to access the sign-up form). Not all that apply may be selected to participate. Selection will depend on volume and how best the applicants can be matched with the attending professionals.

If you are not selected and just want to attend Shoot & Splice as usual, fear not! Indie Memphis’ own Senior Programmer Brighid Wheeler will be on-hand to discuss what she looks for when programming short films for our festival. Also, Memphis-based Production Coordinator Kevin Ivey will share insights into working in production offices as well as his recent Workforce Production Training workshops that he hosted in collaboration with the Memphis & Shelby County Film & TV Commission.

Gabe Mayhan is a cinematographer who shoots features, documentaries, shorts, television shows, and commercials. Join Gabe as he discusses setting up shots, camera and lens choices, lighting, working with directors, directing documentaries, creating a sustainable career as a cinematographer in a fly-over state, and his involvement in the Arkansas Film Society.

Jazz tribute to American musician Roy Hargrove featuring Paul McKinney (trumpet/flugelhorn). The Crosstown Jazz Series, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends.

Join filmmaker Munirah Safiyah Jones as she take us on a tour of her creative process. Jones has found success in creating the animated viral web series hit “Junt Land,” as well as her live action comedic shorts on modern dating and relationships. She’ll discuss how she went from sharing her first video online to taking calls and meetings from Hollywood executives.

Performance of holiday music and carols by the 901 Ringers Handbell Choir.

With up to 12 ringers, this seasoned group of musicians can perform both religious and secular pieces. Unlike an orchestra or choir in which each musician is responsible for one line of the texture, a handbell ensemble acts as one instrument, with each musician responsible for particular notes, sounding his or her assigned bells whenever that note appears in the music. 

Throughout the year, Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts brings cinematographers, directors, editors, writers, and technicians to Shoot & Splice, our monthly filmmaking forum.
