SUMMARY:ICEBERG New Music Workshop: Sound Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:In two sessions\, participants search for sounds that meet certain criteria (i.e. “high\, short\, loud” or “low\, short\, soft”) and record them with portable recorders. The sounds will then be used to create an online “sound” map that lists the sounds’ qualities\, source\, and location\, allowing anyone to download the sounds to use in a creative project. \nLed by Drake Andersen\nMeet at the reception desk in Crosstown Concourse’s Central Atrium\nFree (register on Eventbrite) \nNew York City-based composer collective ICEBERG New Music will be in residence at Crosstown Arts for two weeks of concerts\, workshops\, and lectures. Memphis-based contemporary chamber group Blueshift Ensemble will collaborate with ICEBERG and perform the collective’s original compositions. \nSponsored by Amro Music \n\nAbout ICEBERG New Music:\nFounded by composer Alex Burtzos in 2016\, ICEBERG new music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. The mission of the organization is to promote the idea that substance – not surface – is the heart of music creation and perception. We live in an era where dogma is out of place; composers can\, and should\, draw from an unprecedentedly broad array of influences in their work – including popular music\, avant-garde techniques\, and everything in between. The ten ICEBERG composers hail from different schools and cultivate radically different sounds\, but their contrasting musical languages belie shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. ICEBERG is committed to radical stylistic inclusiveness\, excellence of craft\, dialogue with the audience\, and a modernization of the concert-going experience. \n \n\nAbout Blueshift Ensemble:\nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers.

SUMMARY:"Barrier Free" Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Artist Yancy Villa-Calvo will discuss “Barrier Free\,” her socially engaged art installation on display in Crosstown Concourse’s Central Atrium. A Q&A will follow. The talk will take place in front of the installation. \n\nBarrier Free is a portion of a socially engaged art installation designed for the Latino Memphis Festival by Yancy Villa-Calvo. The installation is on view through June 5th. \nBuilding on the current and controversial idea of the proposed wall along the US-Mexico border\, the installation aims to create awareness and encourages viewers to pause\, reflect\, and act. \nThe installation attempts to be inclusive and open to interpretation. Symbols make reference to barriers around nationality\, race\, religion\, sexual orientation and identity\, gender\, and socioeconomic aspects. This project is less about the actual wall and more about the systematic attempts to divide individuals\, families\, and communities. \n\n  \nioby Campaign

SUMMARY:MemFeast 2: Crosstown Public Art Projects
DESCRIPTION:FEAST is a recurring public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund emerging art-makers. MemFeast is Memphis’ local version founded and facilitated by Crosstown Arts\, dedicated to rethinking how the arts are financed and experienced communally. The original FEAST was conceived in Brooklyn in 2009. \nAt the second installment of MemFeast\, seven artists proposed public art projects for Midtown’s Crosstown neighborhood.  The most votes went to artist Robin Salant and her proposal to illuminate the Sears Crosstown building with colored solar lights. Learn more about Crosstown Lights at facebook.com/crosstownlights. \n \n\nPhotos by Christopher Reyes

SUMMARY:Robin Salant: Crosstown Lights
DESCRIPTION:Winning Project: Memfeast 2 \nFrom the Commercial Appeal: \nCrosstown canvas comes alive with color\nFrom Staff Reports\nTuesday\, September 20\, 2011 \n\nA large crowd on Friday night witnessed the artful lighting of the main body of the old Sears Crosstown building. \nScores of cars pulled into the parking lot on Cleveland near North Parkway for a different kind of tailgating event. \nNearly 300 windows form a large grid on the south side of the vacant building. About 40 windows in the middle were used by artist Robin Salant as a canvas for her colorful\, moving light\, all to the delight of onlookers. \nNext\, eyes will turn to the art deco tower at the front of the 1.4 million-square-foot building. \nSalant will light its windows with moving color starting at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22. \nShe won a Crosstown Arts commission in a MemFEAST event to create art that brings attention to the planned redevelopment of the long-vacant building. \nFlipping the switch on the tower lights will be part of another event at Cleveland at North Parkway on Oct. 22.
