SUMMARY:Crosstown Counterpoint: Blueshift Ensemble + Evan Williams
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Crosstown Counterpoint: Blueshift Ensemble + Evan Williams in the Central Atrium at Crosstown Concourse. \nCentral Atrium\nWednesday\, June 14\, 2023\nShow begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: Free \nREGISTER HERE \nSupported by an Arts Access grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and ArtsMemphis\, Crosstown Arts presents the premiere of the commissioned work by Evan Williams\, “Crosstown Counterpoint” alongside Williams’ earlier works “Bodies Upon the Gears”\, “Amber Waves”\, and Terry Riley’s classic minimalist bop\, “In C.” \nAs the groundbreaking neared for Crosstown Concourse in 2017\, several Memphians young and old were interviewed to provide oral histories of the Sears Crosstown building and what the revitalization would do for the area. Taking inspiration from works such as Steve Reich’s Different Trains\, Crosstown Counterpoint uses these oral histories to tell the multi-generational story of this space\, and what it meant to the people of Memphis. Two antiphonal string quartets accompany the voices\, using the open space of the Central Atrium of Crosstown Concourse to bring this history to life. \nDrawing from inspirations as diverse as Medieval chant to contemporary pop\, the music of composer and conductor Evan Williams (b. 1988) explores the thin lines between beauty and disquieting\, joy and sorrow\, and simple and complex\, while often tackling important social and political issues. Williams’ catalogue contains a broad range of work\, from vocal and operatic offerings to instrumental works\, along with electronic music. \nBlueshift Ensemble is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. \n

It’s a time when families gather to honor and remember deceased loved ones. It is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit the living families in homes and cemeteries. This is a joyful festivity for families and the community. The Aztec honored their dead with fiestas and rituals during the harvest season. They viewed death as the beginning of the cycle of seasons and life.

SUMMARY:The City of Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Performance by the woodwind quintet\, City of Tomorrow \nFree\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \nAbout City of Tomorrow:\nThe City of Tomorrow is a woodwind quintet with a fearless aesthetic and a commitment to 21st-century music. Gold medalists of the 2011 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition\, the ensemble has been presented in New York at the DiMenna Center\, Trinity Wall Street\, Spectrum\, and at IN\TER/SECT\, co-presented by Bryant Park and Chamber Music America. \nTheir U.S. tours have included prestigious festivals and series\, including the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago\, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Michigan\, and Red Note New Music Festival in Illinois. The quintet’s work has also been supported by residencies at the Banff Center for Arts & Creativity and the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Their 2018-19 season includes residencies at Tufts University in Boston and the Vermont College of Fine Art. \nIn 2015\, the quintet began exploring physical movement and spatial relationships in their concert programming. Championing 20th and 21st-century works by Harrison Birtwistle\, Esa-Pekka Salonen\, Julia Wolfe\, and others\, the quintet uses lighting and choreography to create a seamless and immersive musical experience. \nFrom 2012 to 2014\, the quintet was engaged in a musical exploration of climate change\, which culminated in the commissioning of major new works from composers Hannah Lash\, Nat Evans\, and John Aylward. The City of Tomorrow’s first album\, Nature\, released on PARMA/Ravello in 2014\, further wrestled with questions of human involvement in the natural world. Exploration of these natural themes resulted in a new work from Hannah Lash\, Leander and Hero\, which was supported by a 2014 Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant. \nThe City of Tomorrow’s members are in demand as new music specialists\, curators\, collaborators\, and teachers. As an ensemble\, they have recently given residencies at Vermont College of Fine Arts\, Berklee College of Music\, Indiana University\, Tufts\, and Yale. Members of the ensemble can also be heard with some of the finest ensembles in New York and beyond\, including Talea Ensemble\, ICE\, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. \nElise Blatchford / Flute\nStuart Breczinski / Oboe\nRane Moore / Clarinet\nNanci Belmont / Bassoon\nLeander Star / Horn

SUMMARY:Blueshift Ensemble with ICEBERG New Music
DESCRIPTION:Blueshift Ensemble is collaborating with ICEBERG New Music to present a free concert in the Crosstown Concourse Central Atrium. \nICEBERG New Music is a New York City-based collective of composers who will be spending a week in Memphis working with Blueshift musicians to put on a performance of their compositions. Sponsored in part by Amro Music. \nFree (donations accepted) \nProgram: \nString Quartet No. 4 “Aftermath” by Harry Stafylakis\nImogen for flute and piano by Stephanie Ann Boyd\nThe Impossible Object for violin and piano by Alex Burtzos\nString Quartet No. 1 “Earth Tones” by Jonathan Russ\nKill James for bassoon\, cello\, and piano by Derek Cooper \n\n\n\n\nAbout ICEBERG New Music:\nFounded by composer Alex Burtzos in 2016\, ICEBERG new music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. The mission of the organization is to promote the idea that substance – not surface – is the heart of music creation and perception. We live in an era where dogma is out of place; composers can\, and should\, draw from an unprecedentedly broad array of influences in their work – including popular music\, avant-garde techniques\, and everything in between. The ten ICEBERG composers hail from different schools and cultivate radically different sounds\, but their contrasting musical languages belie shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. ICEBERG is committed to radical stylistic inclusiveness\, excellence of craft\, dialogue with the audience\, and a modernization of the concert-going experience.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Blueshift Ensemble:\nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration.
