When their famous logo came up on screen\, Scorsese says\, “You knew you were in for fantasy\, wonder\, magic – real film magic.” Now\, in this documentary\, he tells the story of his lifelong love-affair with their movies\, including The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp\, Black Narcissus\, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann. \n“Certain films you simply run all the time and you live with them.” Scorsese says. “As you grow older they grow deeper. I’m not sure how it happens\, but it does. For me\, that body of work is a wondrous presence\, a constant source of energy\, and a reminder of what life and art are all about.” Drawing on a rich array of archive material\, Scorsese explores in full the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger – two romantics and idealists\, who thrived in the face of adversity during World War II but were eventually brought low by the film industry of the 1950s. In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt\, pepper\, pins\, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns\, a twirling fairground ride\, and a female nude\, among other striking images\, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Le Retour à la raison\, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present Man Ray: Return to Reason\, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. Twenty-six seasons of full-time touring has brought Imani Winds to virtually every major chamber music series\, performing arts center\, and summer festival in the U.S. They regularly perform in prominent venues including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, and the Kennedy Center and have a presence at festivals such as Chamber Music Northwest\, Chautauqua Institution and Banff Centre. \nAppointed in 2021 as Curtis Institute of Music’s first ever Faculty Wind Quintet\, Imani Winds commitment to education runs deep. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.
