SUMMARY:Reigning Sound
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Memphis garage rockers Reigning Sound at Crosstown Theater. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nTickets: $20 advance\n \nTickets are $25 on day of show \nFounded by Memphis blues-punk legend Greg Cartwright — a former member of the Oblivians\, the Compulsive Gamblers\, and ’68 Comeback — Reigning Sound fuse the hot-wired energy of garage rock with the deep emotional resonance of classic soul music in a manner that suggests a cross between the early Rolling Stones and the Sonics. While the band could rock convincingly\, Cartwright’s songwriting showed a maturity and emotional strength that set him apart from the majority of garage rock acts\, and the group’s R&B accents reflected the intelligent passion of the songs. Reigning Sound proved they could wail hard on 2002’s Time Bomb High School\, but their work with Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las on her 2007 solo effort Dangerous Game\, 2014’s mature\, impassioned Shattered\, and 2021’s A Little More Time with Reigning Sound found them turning up their soul influences as they employed a more dynamic approach. \nFeaturing Cartwright on vocals and guitar\, Jeremy Scott on bass\, Greg Roberson on drums\, and Alex Greene on keyboards and guitar\, Reigning Sound made their recorded debut with a three-song 7″ in May of 2001; their first full-length album\, Break Up Break Down\, was released a month later on Sympathy for the Record Industry. In August of 2002\, the group upped the rock quotient on its second album (and first for In the Red)\, Time Bomb High School\, and the group landed a high-profile gig opening for Swedish garage wunderkinds the Hives on their North American tour. Alex Greene dropped out as a full-time group member by the time 2004’s Too Much Guitar was released\, though he did appear on the disc as a guest musician\, and the band followed its release with more touring\, both as a headliner and once again as opener for the Hives. The band also gained another well-known champion in Little Steven Van Zandt\, who gave the band frequent airplay on his syndicated radio show. In September 2005 Reigning Sound released Home for Orphans through Sympathy for the Record Industry. It featured reworked versions of Too Much Guitar material along with some unreleased tracks. They also recorded and released two live albums in 2005\, Live at Maxwell’s and Live at Goner Records. After a long break from recording under their own name (though Cartwright and the new lineup of bassist David Wayne Gay\, drummer Lance Wille\, and keyboardist Dave Amels backed ex-Shangri-La Mary Weiss on her 2007 album Dangerous Game)\, the band resurfaced in 2009 with a new studio record for In the Red\, Love and Curses. \nIn 2011\, after Cartwright had detoured into touring and recording with a reunited Oblivians\, he assembled a new lineup of Reigning Sound\, with Dave Amels returning on keyboards alongside new members Mike Catanese on guitar\, Benjamin Trokan on bass\, and Mikey Post on drums. Their first project was something out of the ordinary; the auto manufacturer Scion was launching a music-themed promotion campaign and Reigning Sound partnered with them to create an album that would be released by Scion’s ad hoc label\, Scion Audio/Visual. The album\, Abdication … For Your Love\, featured five cuts produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and gave the group a more polished presentation without cutting back on their energy. Reigning Sound emphasized a more mature and soulful approach for their next album. They rolled into Brooklyn’s Daptone Studio to record Shattered\, which became the band’s first release for Merge Records in July 2014. In April 2019\, Merge gave Abdication … For Your Love a mass-market reissue\, with the addition of a bonus track\, “What Did I Tell You.” Greg Cartwright reunited the original Reigning Sound lineup of Alex Greene\, Jeremy Scott\, and Greg Roberson for a short tour in 2020\, and shortly afterwards the band went into Electraphonic Recording in Memphis (augmented by second drummer Graham Winchester) to record a fresh batch of songs. The finished product\, A Little More Time with Reigning Sound\, was released by Merge in May 2021. — Mark Denning

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Kraftwerk 3-D at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:This tour has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \nElectro pioneers Kraftwerk are bringing their 50th anniversary tour to the Kemmons Wilson Family Stage at Crosstown Theater. The performance will benefit Crosstown Arts\, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2020. \nSOLD OUT\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nKraftwerk celebrate 50th anniversary with a North American tour. Bringing together music and performance art\, Kraftwerk 3-D concerts are a true “Gesamtkunstwerk” – a total work of art. \nThe multi-media project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf\, Germany\, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums. \nBy the mid 1970s\, Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic sound scapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future\, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century. \nTheir compositions\, using innovative techniques\, synthetic voices\, and computerized rhythms\, have had a major international influence across an entire range of musical genres: from Electro to Hip Hop\, from Techno to SynthPop. \nIn their live performances\, Kraftwerk — Ralf Hütter\, Henning Schmitz\, Fritz Hilpert\, Falk Grieffenhagen — illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine. \nStarting with the retrospective of their catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012\, Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. \nThe 3-D concert series at MoMA was followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London)\, Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo) Opera House (Sydney)\, Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles)\, Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris)\, Neue National Galerie (Berlin)\, and Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao). \nIn 2014\, Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Crosstown Arthouse presents Walking Tall
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nThe legends surrounding Buford Pusser loom large over both Memphis and McNairy County\, where he was sheriff from 1964 to 1970. Buford was a professional wrestler who became a sheriff in an area overrun by the Dixie Mafia. He went to war with and killed Louise Hathcock\, the operator of The Shamrock Motel\, where the Babushka lady was supposedly seen hanging out a week or so before JFK got popped. \nBuford’s star really started to shine when his friend\, country and rockabilly singer Eddie Bond started singing about him. Legend has it\, when Buford got ambushed by the Dixie Mafia (and his wife was killed and his face was shot off)\, he hid out in Memphis at a nightclub on Madison that Eddie Bond owned with “The Fabulous One” Jackie Fargo. \nBuford’s legend and story was interesting enough that they made THREE movies about him\, and the first is Walking Tall. The film fictionalizes Buford’s journey from bear wrestler to one-man crime crusader. Walking Tall stars character actor Jo Don Baker (Joysticks and Fletch) as Buford Pusser and Elizabeth Hartman (A Patch of Blue and The Secret of NIMH) as his wife Pauline\, plus Lief Garrett (Macon Count Line\, Walking Tall Part II\, Final Chapter: Walking Tall\, Tiger Beat Cover Model) and Lief’s real-life sister Dawn Lyn as the Pusser kids! \n1973/Phil Karlson/1973/125 minutes \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Crosstown Arthouse presents The Muthers
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nWe can’t say it better than the incredible American Genre Film Archive\, who are lovingly saving films like this for folks like us to show again in all their glory on a giant screen! \nSays the American Genre Film Archive: “Sleaze ahoy! Directed by heroic smut merchant Cirio Santiago (TNT Jackson\, Vampire Hookers) and shot on-the-cheap in the Philippines\, The Muthers is like stepping into one of Martin Denny’s exotica LPs while it plays in Jess Franco’s living room. Filled with karate chops and epic psychedelic-funk jams\, this is the story of two pirates (Jeanne Bell and Rosanne Katon) who rob and loot on the China Seas\, get sent to a women’s prison presided over by a sadistic warden\, then revolt and turn the sky black with the smoke from their machine guns. In other words\, this is the only revolutionary-pirate-women-in-prison movie that you’ll ever need. Restored from the original negative for maximum savagery!” \nCirio Santiago/1976/93 minutes \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Crosstown Arthouse presents Black Orpheus
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nBlack Orpheus is a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice\, set in the streets of Rio during Carnival. When released in 1959\, Black Orpheus was an arthouse hit\, driven by incredible cinematography\, location\, and bossa nova music. \nOnly later\, people started to re-examine Black Orpheus\, its popularity\, and its audience — especially the idea of an all-black cast being shoehorned into a Greek myth through the lens of a white French director. Despite its complications and glossing-over of what life was like for the poor in Rio\, Black Orpheus is\, without doubt\, a cultural milestone and an influence on later works in film and music. Black Orpheus is another one of those award-winning films everyone is supposed to see\, but in this case\, seriously\, you should come see it! \nMarcel Camus/1959/107 minutes \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Crosstown Arthouse presents Paris is Burning
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nJennie Livingston’s Paris is Burning documents African-American and Latinx drag culture in 1980s New York City. Focusing on ballroom competition culture\, Paris is Burning introduced the rest of America to voguing. Beautifully shot in 16mm\,  the film told the stories of gay and trans people of color and how\, after being rejected by their families and straight society\, they managed to find accepting family units and ways to survive (which sometimes included shoplifting and sex work). Paris is Burning was the inspiration for the television show Pose. \nJennie Livingston/1990/78 minutes \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Kafé Kirk with special guest Dave Koz
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, a monthly jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This month’s performance will feature saxophonist Dave Koz. \nThis show will feature two performances — a matinee at 4 pm and an evening show at 7 pm. VIP tickets will ONLY be available for the 4 pm performance. \nGeneral admission tickets\, 4 pm — $50\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $70\nDoors open at 3 pm for VIP and 3:30 pm for general seating | Show at 4 pm\n*** VIP experience has been relocated to the black box of the theater. The VIP experience includes a signed copy of a Kirk Whalum CD and a meet-and-greet. \nGeneral admission tickets\, 7 pm — $50 \nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Dave Koz:\nIn a recording career that spans nearly three decades\, saxophonist Dave Koz has racked up an astoundingly impressive array of honors and achievements: nine GRAMMY® nominations\, 11 No. 1 albums on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Albums chart\, numerous world tours\, 13 sold-out Dave Koz & Friends At Sea cruises\, performances for multiple U.S. presidents\, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame\, and appearances on a multitude of television shows\, including “Good Morning America\,” “The View\,” “The Tonight Show\,” “Entertainment Tonight\,” and more. A Platinum-selling artist\, Koz is also known as a humanitarian\, entrepreneur\, radio host\, and instrumental music advocate.

DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nIt’s probably enough just to say “David Lynch\,” but let’s hit on some of Wild at Heart‘s high points\, like the stars of the movie: Laura Dern (Foxes; Ladies and Gentlemen\, The Fabulous Stains); Nicolas Cage (Valley Girl); Thrashers Powermad playing Elvis Presley; Diane Ladd (Laura Dern’s real-life mother) manically covering her face with lipstick; Crispin Glover (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter\, River’s Edge) as Jingle Dale; Laura Dern’s cousin\, who wants Christmas to be all year long and puts cockroaches in his own underwear; Harry Dean Stanton (Alien\, Repo Man\, Red Dawn) as Diane Ladd’s pathetic lover; Sherilyn Fenn (The Wraith\, Two Moon Junction) in one the best and most traumatic Lynch car wreck scenes ever put to screen; Willem Dafoe (Streets of Fire\, The Last Temptation of Christ) as Bobby Peru; a cameo by Laura Palmer herself (Sheryl Lee) as the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz; Koko Taylor singing a song written by Lynch and composed by longtime collaborator Angelo Badalamenti; and CJack Nance (Eraserhead!!) as a random crazy dude with an invisible dog in a trailer park. \nIf the last time you saw Wild at Heart was at the Fare Four\, you owe it to yourself to come see it again on the big screen at Crosstown Theater! \nDavid Lynch/1990/124 minutes \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Crosstown Arthouse presents Tokyo Knights
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nSeijun Suzuki was a journeyman director for Nikkatsu\, one of the oldest Japanese film production companies in existence. Suzuki eventually went from journeyman to auteur\, slipping weird elements into what should have been run-of-the-mill Yakuza fare. Finally Suzuki made the legendary Branded to Kill (R.I.P.\, Joe Shishido) for Nikkatsu and was fired! \nSuzuki persevered and made more films\, but Crosstown Arts is going back to his roots with a screening of Tokyo Knights. Pre-dating the idea of “millennials\,” Tokyo Knights  is about a boy named Koji who is good at\, well\, everything. Koji’s pop passes\, and Koji goes home to take over his family’s “construction business\,” crush it at school\, and get the truth as to what happened with his daddy. \nSeijun Suzuki/1961/82 minutes \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Crosstown Arthouse presents Klute
DESCRIPTION:** The event is postponed until further notice. \nJane Fonda (Cat Ballou\, They Shoot Horses Don’t They?\, Barbarella) stars as a groovy call girl and wannabe actress who may or may not be connected to a dead john (who ran a chemical company by day). Donald Sutherland (MASH\,  The Kentucky Fried Movie) plays the title character Klute\, a detective brought in by a chemical company executive to find out what really happened. Co-starring Roy Scheider (Jaws\, Jaws II) as Jane Fonda’s pimp. Also co-starring the super-fun and sleazy NYC of the 1970s. Klute won a lot of Oscars\, but don’t hold that against it. IT IS A GREAT MOVIE ANYWAY!! \nAlan J. SUMMARY:POSTPONED Spotlight Concert Series: Piano Quintets Lost in Time
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice.  \nJoin us in Crosstown Theater for the Spotlight Concert Series\, featuring piano quintets by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nThis special performance by Memphis Symphony Orchestra musicians Priscilla Tsai\, Jordan Musgrave\, Ruth Burgess\, Josh Muzzi\, and pianist Tingting Yao features a program of piano quintets “lost in time” by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nGeneral Admission $10 | $5 with student ID\nDoors at 6 pm | Performance at 7 pm \nViolinist Jordan Musgraves writes about the program:\n“We happened upon these pieces in a YouTube channel that features recordings of obscure pieces. These are two that really stand out\, not only because the quality is so good but because when you dig down into why they never became widely known\, it seems such a shame that we don’t know these composers today. \nZdenek Fibich was a contemporary of Smetana and Dvorak and actually the first to ever use Czech folk music in symphonic works (their use of folk song was inspired by Fibich). In his time\, he did have some acclaim\, though he was criticized for not being quite Czech nationalist enough and especially for composing operas in the Wagnerian style. Born of a Czech father\, a forestry official\, and a German-Viennese mother\, he was of mixed heritage and was boycotted by most of the Czech orchestras. His music only survives because of his students\, who championed it. \nDora Pejacovic\, a Hungarian-Croatian composer firmly in the Romantic era\, was slightly later in time. Her music did not reach wide acclaim\, but even in an era of music and society dominated by men\, she had a large output of composition\, starting at age 12. She was mostly a self-taught composer\, but luckily for us\, was encouraged by several other composers who saw her talent and advocated for her music. She might have composed much more but sadly passed away following childbirth at age 39. Today\, there is an ongoing effort to publish her music\, much of which remains unpublished.

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Creative Producing
DESCRIPTION:Many people assume that the role of a producer is only about finding money and selling a film. But what does it mean to be a creative producer? Join Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts in a conversation with producers Tracee Comfort and Princeton Echols to find out why producing is one of the more misunderstood but creatively fulfilling roles in production. \nTopics will include how to manage a production\, casting\, story and script development\, working with a director\, and much more. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Presentation at 7 pm \nThis Shoot & Splice is presented by Indie Memphis\, Crosstown Arts\, and the Black Creators Forum at the Indie Memphis Film Festival. The heart of the Black Creators Forum is a two-day symposium of panels\, discussions\, and workshops for black filmmakers\, scholars\, and critics. The goal is to ease the barrier of entry for black artists who would like to work in film. The Forum also supports screenings\, meet-ups\, and artist support programs throughout the year\, including a free-for-all Pitch Rally during the festival.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Blue Collar
DESCRIPTION:BLUE COLLAR was Paul Schrader’s debut as a director\, and making the movie reportedly literally drove him insane. BLUE COLLAR is a caper about three auto workers (Richard Pryor\, Harvey Keitel\, and Yaphet Kotto) who rob their union and unexpectedly uncover an illegal loan operation and ties to organized crime. BLUE COLLAR is about corruption\, the impossible grind of the working class\, powerlessness\, and most definitely\, the use of racial difference as a weapon by the oppressors against the oppressed. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents The Harder They Come
DESCRIPTION:WITH A PIECE IN HIS HAND\, HE TAKES ON THE MAN! The epochal cultural moment that first brought reggae to the international stage\, made Jimmy Cliff a star\, and demonstrated how music can change the world. Fifty years on\, THE HARDER THEY COME is still electric with the feeling of discovery. This SCARFACE-y blend of crime drama and musical tracks Cliff’s country-boy-in-search-of-fame through Jamaica under the guises of laborer\, recording artist\, convict\, ganja dealer\, and outlaw folk hero. Before THE HARDER THEY COME\, the collective perception of a “foreign film” was limited to the Bergmans and the Kurosawas of the world. This game-changer forever blew those doors off — and it still hasn’t lost a drop of its cool\, its edge\, or its way of making you dance. — American Genre Film Archive — Perry Henzell/1972/109 minutes/Rated R \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Time and Place
DESCRIPTION:Lee Moses (1941-1998)\, a music prodigy\, is considered one of the greatest unknown musicians among Baby Huey or Sixto Rodriguez (Sugar Man). He was part of a soul scene in Atlanta between the ’60s and the ’70s. His one album\, Time and Place (1971)\, did not take off. During his time in New York\, Moses played with greatest\, including Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His music has now garnered a community of appreciation. Songs such as “Bad Girl” was used in the 2014 French film House of Tolerance\, and “If Loving You Is A Crime” was used in 2013 American film The Teacher. What makes his story remarkable is there’s not much to be found on Lee Moses. Even in his hometown of Atlanta\, there are no physical traces of him. The locations where Moses once performed no longer exist. TIME AND PLACE aims to connect the time of Lee Moses with the place Atlanta is becoming now.  Simon David/2019/76 minutes \nDirector Simon David will be available for a Q&A after the film. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \n

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents A Trip to the Moon & Aelita: Queen of Mars with live score by Alex Greene & The Rolling Head Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Alex Greene & the Rolling Head Orchestra will present new musical scores for two silent science-fiction classics — A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la Lune)\, France\, 1902\, directed by Georges Méliès and based on the novel by Jules Verne AND Aelita: Queen of Mars (Аэли́та)\, Soviet Union\, 1924\, directed by Yakov Protazanov\, based on the novel by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy. \nConsidered by many to be one of the greatest and most influential silent-era films ever made\, A TRIP TO THE MOON has turn-of-the-20th-century astronomers taking a proto-rocket to the moon and back to Earth. While on the moon\, they are attacked and captured by moon natives who turn out to be surprisingly easy to kill and out-maneuver. In a similar tale of Earthmen hurling themselves into the void of space\, AELITA: QUEEN OF MARS is a Russian silent film about a man who leaves his boring Earth wife behind to go to Mars and lead a revolution with the help of a Martian Queen named Aelita. These two silent-era classics will be live-scored by Alex Greene and The Rolling Head Orchestra! \nSoundtrack by Alex Greene\, 2019 resident composer at Crosstown Arts. Performed live by the Rolling Head Orchestra: Marc Franklin\, trumpet; Tim Goodwin\, bass and tuba; Alex Greene\, keyboards; Tom Lonardo\, drums; Jim Spake\, clarinets and saxophones; John Whittemore\, pedal steel\, vibrophones\, and guitar. With special guests: members of The Blueshift Ensemble and Kate Tayler Hunt\, theremin and synthesizer.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Handsworth Songs
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nIn October 1985\, Britain witnessed a spate of civil disturbances in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and in urban centers of London. These were violent\, tragic events\, marked by the death of an elderly black woman\, Joy Gardner\, and a white policeman\, Keith Blakelock . \nHANDSWORTH SONGS (BLACK AUDIO FILM COLLECTIVE/JOHN AKOMFRAH)/1986/58 minutes) takes as its point of departure these events and the inability of the British media to go beyond its concern with demonizing or rationalizing the rioters and their motives\, to break the anxiety-driven loop of morbid responses to the presence of blacks in Britain. \nHandsworth Songs explores the idea that the riots represented less a self-contained drama of rage with a single origin and trajectory than a multiplicity of issues\, ambivalences \, to do with race\, longing\, and belonging – not all of which could be shored up by recourse to a rhetoric of civil disorder. The film’s sense of multiplicity extends to a rethinking of black British presence and a refuting of the idea of a homogenous black community with a single sense of presence characterized by uniformity of ambition and expression. \nInstead the film evokes a broad range of voices\, tones\, registers. And it is through this panoply of positions and presences that Handsworth Songs approaches the riots and expresses its central idea — that it is not the riots in their dramatic unfolding\, nor even in the wake of their violent eruption\, which provide us with a route into the drama. \nHandsworth Songs contends that the meaning in the malaise is to be found in events outside the frame of contemporary reportage\, in moments which seemed to have little affective relation to the expressions of discontent which characterized the riots – in the annals of post war news reportage around race in Britain\, transformed in the film into an archive of black (un)belonging\, in the expression of hopes of belonging brutally deferred.
