SUMMARY:ONE NIGHT ONLY: Don Bryant & The Bo-Keys Live with Chamber Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Hear Don Bryant & The Bo-Keys in a very special\, one-night-only performance with members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra will also be performing music from Craig Brewer’s 2019 film Dolemite Is My Name (music written by Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys). \nDoors at 6:30 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $35 first-level seating | $25 balcony seating \nYou know that old song that O. V. Wright did so well in 1971 that no one can ever do that song again — “Nickel and a Nail”? O. V. Wright has held tight to that song and rightfully so. But not no mo. Not to take anything from O.V.— but after nearly half a century\, now you gotta step aside. Don Bryant is here. \nThough it ain’t like he just showed up. The roots of this record are in the Memphis church\, where Don Bryant began singing when he was 5. He joined his father’s family vocal group\, then formed a gospel quartet for a high school radio gig. Broadcasting broadened the audience and they went secular\, singing pop at WLOK on Dick “Cane” Cole’s popular show. After parting with the DJ\, they took a very real step toward careers when\, as the Four Kings\, they began fronting Willie Mitchell’s band. \nWillie Mitchell led the swingingest\, groovin’est band in the Memphis-Mississippi-Arkansas area — the American music floodplain. Willie’s band was known for instrumental records\, but when they’d play at Danny’s in West Memphis\, Don’s group fronted them. But the group broke up and Willie\, who was touring concert venues and dance halls\, needed a vocalist who could play with his supple\, slinky funky beats\, and anointed Don Bryant as his leading man. \nDon could also write songs. He was still in his teens when\, in 1960\, Willie was producing the 5 Royales\, and Don handed him “I Got To Know.” The 5 Royales put it on wax. Don was hot in the spotlight and in the writer’s room. \nAs Willie Mitchell carved out his place at Hi Records\, Don was close by. Don cut songs at Hi under the Four Kings moniker (“That Driving Beat”) and as a solo artist (“Don’t Turn Your Back On Me”). He wrote material for other Hi artists\, including Janet & the Jays and Norman West. In 1969\, still in the age of 7” singles\, Don was popular enough to release an album — though the big breakout hit stayed elusive. \nAround 1970\, Willie put Don with the Hi label’s newest act\, Ann Peebles\, who burst on the scene with “Part Time Love.” Don looked at this slight young lady and penned “99 Lbs” for her: “You wouldn’t know what I’m talking ’bout/ If you never had a love like this/… 99 lbs of natural born goodness/99 lbs of soul.” The relationship warmed\, they co-wrote the hit “I Can’t Stand the Rain” in 1973 and were married the following year. Ann’s performing career continued\, as did Don’s writing\, and they began raising a family. Occasionally\, Don returned to the microphone\, dueting with his wife\, sometimes releasing gospel material. Always\, he continued to write songs. \nAnd all the while\, that voice was maturing\, mellowing\, until these recordings that find him\, at age 74\, in peak form and taking O. V.’s song. The band is a mix of lifelong cohorts and upstart stalwarts. They understand where he’s been and where he wants to go\, making his song “How Do I Get There\,” a rhetorical question\, because they have clearly found the way. –Robert Gordon\, Memphis\, 2017 \n— \nThrough three critically acclaimed albums\, as well as international appearances at major festivals and clubs\, the Bo-Keys have kept the spirit of classic Memphis music alive while also writing a vital new chapter for the sound and style that’s etched into the fiber of American consciousness. The Bo-Keys performed on the score for Hustle & Flow and appear in the film Soul Men\, performing on-screen with stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac. They also appear on three songs Bomar produced for the film’s soundtrack\, including“Soul Music” by Anthony Hamilton\, which was nominated for a Grammy in2010. The Bo-Keys can also be heard performing the song\, “Kick It” in the film and soundtrack for the Paramount animated feature\, Barnyard. The Bo-Keys have also had songs featured in 2013 De Niro/Stallone comedy Grudge Match. the Showtime Series TheChi\, AMC’s Dietland\, the ABC TV series Scandal\, and the CBS TV series Scorpion. \n— \nScott Bomar is a Memphis-based musician\, Emmy Award-winning film/TV composer and producer\, songwriter\, and engineer of multiple Grammy-winning and nominated recordings. Projects include the films Dolemite is My Name\, Hustle & Flow\, Black Snake Moan\, Mississippi Grind\, and Soul Men. Bomar produced and engineered Cyndi Lauper’s Grammy-nominated album Memphis Blues at his Electraphonic Recording Studio and co-wrote the song\, “The House Always Wins” on William Bell’s 2016 Grammy-winning album\, This is Where I Live. \nIn high school\, he began performing with groups at Memphis-area clubs and formed the group Impala. With their ‘60s instrumental sound\, the group toured and released five albums. Impala’s version of the Henry Mancini theme “Experiment in Terror” is featured in George Clooney’s directorial debut\, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. In 2018\, Impala released a new album\, In the Late Hours\, which was described by Rolling Stone as “…combines surf-guitar nostalgia with a minor-key\, spy-movie-worthy riffage.” \nIn 2005\, Bomar composed the score for Craig Brewer’s award-winning film Hustle & Flow\, for which Bomar has received much critical acclaim for his Memphis soul meets hip hop score. Bomar returned in 2006 to collaborate with the filmmakers of Hustle & Flow as Executive Music Producer and composer of the film Black Snake Moan. He worked with film’s stars Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci in the studio to record songs for the film\, which are performed on-screen. He also composed the original score utilizing musicians harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite and Rolling Stones and Ry Cooder sideman\, Jim Dickinson. \nBomar is also the leader of The Bo-Keys\, a Memphis soul group featuring legendary Stax and Hi Records session players.

Jon used his time at Crosstown Arts to film interviews with anyone in the Queer community in Memphis willing to sit down and talk. Tell Me a Memory is the result of those sessions. Join Crosstown Arts and filmmaker Jon Bryant Crawford for a screening of Tell Me a Memory at Crosstown Theater. The screening will be followed with a panel discussion with Mr. Crawford. \nFROM THE FILMMAKER: “I fell in love with a man in my early twenties who was older than I. His family had a history of dementia and Alzheimers. We were closeted\, and I worried what would happen to our love story if he lost his memory. No one knew about us\, and I wanted some marker of it in the world. Even if it was found years later\, it would be something. I made a short film about that fear\, and when the short played at festivals\, other gay men told me their stories. I wanted a place to keep some of these memories\, little things that might be overlooked\, but are poetic and meaningful nonetheless\, those little things I hear from other Queer folks I run into out in the world. When I had the opportunity to spend some time in Memphis\, I wanted to try and capture stories from the community in a very undisrupted style\, with us all just sharing\, and place them in one place as a document for future generations.” \nABOUT JON BRYANT CRAWFORD is a filmmaker\, writer\, and photographer exploring the loneliness of American masculinity and the celebration of Queer resilience through the perspective of a gay\, mixed-race Southerner. He studied experimental film at the SFAI before earning his MFA from the UCLA School of Theatre\, Film\, and Television.

But shortly after arriving\, they become embroiled in a series of mysterious homicides of local men\, all of whom were last seen in the company of a mysterious and beautiful woman. Beautifully photographed by Ernest Dickerson (Do the Right Thing) and starring Kadeem Hardison (I’m Gonna Git You Sucka)\, and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction)\, this sole directorial effort from child actor James Bond III is a macabre\, neon-tinged portrait of late 1980s Brooklyn. The movie blends supernatural horror and religious mysticism\, punctuated by an electrifying hip hop and R&B soundtrack. Newly restored from the original 35mm camera negative! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a performance by Blueshift Ensemble\, curated by composer and conductor Evan Williams.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $15 ($5 with student ID\, limited availability) \nStudents tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by emailing jenny@crosstownarts.org. \nBlueshift Ensemble performs a program of chamber music curated by composer and conductor Evan Williams featuring works by Williams and his musical mentors\, friends\, and colleagues in Crosstown Theater. The program includes works by Jennifer Jolley\, Caroline Shaw\, and Michael Fiday. \nThe music of Evan Williams has been performed across the country and internationally by members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra\, the International Contemporary Ensemble\, QuinceEnsemble\, Fifth House Ensemble\, and at festivals such as SEAMUS\, the New Music Gathering\, the Electroacoustic Barn Dance\, and the New York City Electronic Music Festival. He has been commissioned by notable performers and ensembles including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Urban Playground Chamber Orchestra. His work can be found on recordings by The Namaste Ensemble’s “No Borders Quartet” and Levels. Williams has received a number of awards and honors\, including serving as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural Classical Roots Composer-in-Residence in 2018. Williams holds a DMA in Composition with a cognate in Orchestral Conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati\, where he also served as a teaching assistant in electronic music. He also holds degrees from Bowling Green State University and Lawrence University. Williams serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities at Rhodes College\, where he teaches composition\, music technology\, and leads the Rhodes Orchestra. He previously held teaching positions at Lawrence University\, Bennington College\, and at the Walden School. \nJennifer Jolley is a composer\, blogger\, and professor person. She is also a cat lover and part-time creative opera producer. Jennifer’s work draws toward subjects that are political and even provocative. Her collaboration with librettist Kendall A\, Prisoner of Conscience\, has been described as “the ideal soundtrack and perhaps balm for our current ‘toxic’…times” by Frank J. Oteri of NewMusicBox. Her piece Blue Glacier Decoy\, written as a musical response to the Olympic National Park\, depicts the melting glaciers of the Pacific Northwest. Her partnership with writer Scott Woods\, You Are Not Alone\, evokes the fallout of the #MeToo Movement. Jennifer’s works have been performed by ensembles worldwide. She has received commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music\, the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble\, Quince Ensemble\, and many others. \nCaroline Shaw is a New York-based musician — vocalist\, violinist\, composer\, and producer — who performs in solo and collaborative projects. She was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013 for Partita for 8 Voices\, written for the Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth\, of which she is a member. Caroline’s film scores include Erica Fae’s To Keep the Light and Josephine Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline as well as the upcoming short 8th Year of the Emergency by Maureen Towey. She has produced for Kanye West (The Life of Pablo; Ye) and Nas (NASIR)\, and has contributed to records by The National\, and by Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry. \nDescribed as “clearly structured\, colorful and unflaggingly compelling work” (Philadelphia Inquirer) and “a precise appeal to an inner ear beyond the mind” (Gramophone Magazine)\, the music of Michael Fiday is known for its expressive directness\, inventive sound world\, gradually unfolding dramatic narratives\, and distinctive rhythmic energy. His work has been commissioned and performed internationally by a broad range of renowned performers spanning the worlds of classical and contemporary music\, including Atlanta Symphony\, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra\, American Composers Orchestra\, Oakland East Bay Symphony\, Orquestra Sinfonica de Guanajuato\, Percussion Ensemble of The Hague\, Mantra Percussion\, Percussion Group Cincinnati\, Duo Damiana (flutist Molly Barth\, guitarist Dieter Hennings)\, pianists Marc-Andre Hamelin and James Tocco\, violinists Carla Kihlstedt and Graeme Jennings\, and electric guitarists Seth Josel\, Derek Johnson and Taylor Levine.

It is hard to describe the level of strangeness and unease After Hours puts on the viewer. DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus at Crosstown Theater. 1959/107 minutes/Rated PG \nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) \nBlack Orpheus is a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus (Breno Mello) and Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) and is set in the streets of Rio during Carnival.  When released in 1959\, Black Orpheus was an arthouse hit\, driven by the incredible cinematography\, the location\, and the bossa nova music. Despite its complications and glossing over of what life was like for the poor in Rio\, Black Orpheus is without doubt a cultural milestone and an influence on later works in film and music. Eloyce Gist and James Gist/1930/50 minutes \nTickets: $5 at the door\nCrosstown Theater\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) \nHell-Bound Train was shot by a pair of self-taught Christian evangelists\, James and Eloyce Gist\, on 16 mm film. The Gists toured Black churches to show the film\,  paired with a sermon. Elizabeth King is a Memphis-based gospel singer who\, after leaving music for some time to raise a family\, has returned at 77 years young to release the extremely well-reviewed\, gospel masterpiece Living in the Last Days. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Memphis garage rockers Reigning Sound at Crosstown Theater. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nTickets: $20 advance\n \nTickets are $25 on day of show \nFounded by Memphis blues-punk legend Greg Cartwright — a former member of the Oblivians\, the Compulsive Gamblers\, and ’68 Comeback — Reigning Sound fuse the hot-wired energy of garage rock with the deep emotional resonance of classic soul music in a manner that suggests a cross between the early Rolling Stones and the Sonics. While the band could rock convincingly\, Cartwright’s songwriting showed a maturity and emotional strength that set him apart from the majority of garage rock acts\, and the group’s R&B accents reflected the intelligent passion of the songs. Reigning Sound proved they could wail hard on 2002’s Time Bomb High School\, but their work with Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las on her 2007 solo effort Dangerous Game\, 2014’s mature\, impassioned Shattered\, and 2021’s A Little More Time with Reigning Sound found them turning up their soul influences as they employed a more dynamic approach. \nFeaturing Cartwright on vocals and guitar\, Jeremy Scott on bass\, Greg Roberson on drums\, and Alex Greene on keyboards and guitar\, Reigning Sound made their recorded debut with a three-song 7″ in May of 2001; their first full-length album\, Break Up Break Down\, was released a month later on Sympathy for the Record Industry. In August of 2002\, the group upped the rock quotient on its second album (and first for In the Red)\, Time Bomb High School\, and the group landed a high-profile gig opening for Swedish garage wunderkinds the Hives on their North American tour. Alex Greene dropped out as a full-time group member by the time 2004’s Too Much Guitar was released\, though he did appear on the disc as a guest musician\, and the band followed its release with more touring\, both as a headliner and once again as opener for the Hives. The band also gained another well-known champion in Little Steven Van Zandt\, who gave the band frequent airplay on his syndicated radio show. In September 2005 Reigning Sound released Home for Orphans through Sympathy for the Record Industry. It featured reworked versions of Too Much Guitar material along with some unreleased tracks. They also recorded and released two live albums in 2005\, Live at Maxwell’s and Live at Goner Records. After a long break from recording under their own name (though Cartwright and the new lineup of bassist David Wayne Gay\, drummer Lance Wille\, and keyboardist Dave Amels backed ex-Shangri-La Mary Weiss on her 2007 album Dangerous Game)\, the band resurfaced in 2009 with a new studio record for In the Red\, Love and Curses. \nIn 2011\, after Cartwright had detoured into touring and recording with a reunited Oblivians\, he assembled a new lineup of Reigning Sound\, with Dave Amels returning on keyboards alongside new members Mike Catanese on guitar\, Benjamin Trokan on bass\, and Mikey Post on drums. Their first project was something out of the ordinary; the auto manufacturer Scion was launching a music-themed promotion campaign and Reigning Sound partnered with them to create an album that would be released by Scion’s ad hoc label\, Scion Audio/Visual. The album\, Abdication … For Your Love\, featured five cuts produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and gave the group a more polished presentation without cutting back on their energy. Reigning Sound emphasized a more mature and soulful approach for their next album. They rolled into Brooklyn’s Daptone Studio to record Shattered\, which became the band’s first release for Merge Records in July 2014. In April 2019\, Merge gave Abdication … For Your Love a mass-market reissue\, with the addition of a bonus track\, “What Did I Tell You.” Greg Cartwright reunited the original Reigning Sound lineup of Alex Greene\, Jeremy Scott\, and Greg Roberson for a short tour in 2020\, and shortly afterwards the band went into Electraphonic Recording in Memphis (augmented by second drummer Graham Winchester) to record a fresh batch of songs. The performance will benefit Crosstown Arts\, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2020. \nSOLD OUT\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nKraftwerk celebrate 50th anniversary with a North American tour. Bringing together music and performance art\, Kraftwerk 3-D concerts are a true “Gesamtkunstwerk” – a total work of art. \nThe multi-media project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf\, Germany\, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums. \nBy the mid 1970s\, Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic sound scapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future\, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century. \nTheir compositions\, using innovative techniques\, synthetic voices\, and computerized rhythms\, have had a major international influence across an entire range of musical genres: from Electro to Hip Hop\, from Techno to SynthPop. \nIn their live performances\, Kraftwerk — Ralf Hütter\, Henning Schmitz\, Fritz Hilpert\, Falk Grieffenhagen — illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine. \nStarting with the retrospective of their catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012\, Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. \nThe 3-D concert series at MoMA was followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London)\, Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo) Opera House (Sydney)\, Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles)\, Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris)\, Neue National Galerie (Berlin)\, and Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao). \nIn 2014\, Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nThe legends surrounding Buford Pusser loom large over both Memphis and McNairy County\, where he was sheriff from 1964 to 1970. Buford was a professional wrestler who became a sheriff in an area overrun by the Dixie Mafia. He went to war with and killed Louise Hathcock\, the operator of The Shamrock Motel\, where the Babushka lady was supposedly seen hanging out a week or so before JFK got popped. \nBuford’s star really started to shine when his friend\, country and rockabilly singer Eddie Bond started singing about him. Legend has it\, when Buford got ambushed by the Dixie Mafia (and his wife was killed and his face was shot off)\, he hid out in Memphis at a nightclub on Madison that Eddie Bond owned with “The Fabulous One” Jackie Fargo. \nBuford’s legend and story was interesting enough that they made THREE movies about him\, and the first is Walking Tall. The film fictionalizes Buford’s journey from bear wrestler to one-man crime crusader.
