A Platinum-selling artist\, Koz is also known as a humanitarian\, entrepreneur\, radio host and instrumental music advocate. \nKIRK WHALUM \nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: William Basinski
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: We are sorry to announce that William Basinski at Crosstown Arts has been cancelled. Unfortunately\, through no fault of his\, William’s flight was cancelled and he is stuck in a city too far from Memphis to make the drive in time for the performance. William and his production crew tried to find alternatives\, but all possibilities were exhausted. We know you were looking forward to this performance at least as much as we were\, and we apologize for the disappointment and for any inconvenience. \nRefunds will be issued for the entire purchase—that includes the ticket price and Eventbrite’s fees. \nWilliam Basinski is a classically trained musician and composer who has been working in experimental media for over 30 years in NYC and\, most recently\, California. Employing obsolete technology and analogue tape loops\, his haunting and melancholy soundscapes explore the temporal nature of life and resound with the reverberations of memory and the mystery of time. \nHis epic 4-disc masterwork\, The Disintegration Loops received international critical acclaim and was chosen as one of the top 50 albums of 2004 by Pitchfork Media. The Temporary Residence deluxe LP box-set reissue from 2012 was awarded best re-issue of the year and a score of 10 on Pitchfork. Installations and films made in collaboration with artist-filmmaker\, James Elaine have been presented in festivals and museums internationally\, and his concerts are presented to sold out crowds around the world. \nBasinski was chosen by Music Director\, Antony Hegarty to create music for the Robert Wilson opera\, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic which had its world premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2011 and toured Europe in 2012 and North America in 2013. Orchestral transcriptions of The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Queen Elizabeth Hall and La Batie Festival in Geneva\, Switzerland\, Dark Mofo Festival in Hobart Tasmania and most recently Pitchfork Midwinter Festival with the Chicago Philharmonic. \nBasinski is currently touring the world in support of his latest work\, “On Time Out of Time” which was released on March 8th\, 2019 on Temporary Residence/2062/USA.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents SPIDER BABY
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents SPIDER BABY at Crosstown Theater. \nJack Hill / 1967 / 81 minutes / N/R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nThe first solo feature from exploitation legend Jack Hill (Foxy Brown)\, Spider Baby remains one of the wildest and weirdest horror films of the 1960s. The credits dub this “the maddest story ever told\,” a promise that’s well on the way to being fulfilled in the opening scene alone\, when Virginia traps and kills a hapless deliveryman in her makeshift web. She’s one of three siblings\, including Sid Haig\, who suffer from a unique genetic disorder that causes them to regress back to childhood while retaining the physical strength and sexual maturity of adults. Lon Chaney Jr. (The Wolf Man) gives one of his most memorable late performances as Bruno\, who manages to cover up the crimes of the “kids” until two distant relatives lay claim to their house. Blending elements of gothic horror and gallows humor\, Spider Baby drops somewhere between The Addams Family and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents LONG WEEKEND at Crosstown Theater. \nColin Eggleston / 1979 / 97 minutes / N/R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nLong Weekend has notes of Possession’s marital anarchy\, with a healthy amount of Hitchcockian flair and the stark hellscapes of The Seventh Seal transposed onto the unforgiving Outback. Essential viewing. \nAttempting to resurrect their failing marriage\, Peter and Marcia trample through the deserted countryside\, hoping a long weekend will patch up their differences. As they inadvertently destroy everything in their tracks\, scattering garbage and shooting anything that moves\, their callous disregard becomes apparent to them when the animals seek vengeance! \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN at Crosstown Theater. \nPedro Almodovar / 1988 / 88 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nCreating “one of the jauntiest of all war-of-the sexes comedies” (Pauline Kael)\, Pedro Almodovar\, Spain’s premiere writer-director\, creates an off-kilter universe of madness\, mayhem\, and pure fun. Nominated for the 1988 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film\, and co-starring Antonio Banderas\, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is “a wild\, wanton\, wickedly witty farce!” (People) High atop one of Spain’s poshest penthouses\, three women have come to the end of their mental ropes. Super-sexy Pepa (Carmen Maura) is forever teetering around atop her skyscraper spikes as she obsesses over Ivan (Fernando Guillen)\, the lover who just jilted her over the answering machine! Her neutoric best friend Candela (Maria Barranco) is seeking refuge at Pepa’s place because she recently realized her lover is a Shiite terrorist. And Ivan’s ex-wife Lucia (Julieta Serrano) was just released from a 20-year stint in a mental institution. SUMMARY:The Peace Chronicles\, Part 2 (ICEBERG + Blueshift + Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz)
DESCRIPTION:ICEBERG New Music\, Blueshift Ensemble\, and acclaimed poet Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz present “The Peace Chronicles (Part 2)” at Crosstown Theater. \n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Theater\nFriday\, August 19\, 2022\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nTickets: pay-what-you-can\nPURCHASE TICKETS / RSVP HERE \nICEBERG New Music\, Blueshift Ensemble\, and acclaimed poet Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz present “The Peace Chronicles (Part 2)\,” an evening of music and spoken word focused on finding peace in a violent and chaotic world. Blueshift Ensemble will perform works by Alex Burtzos\, Derek Cooper\, Jack Frerer\, Jessica Mays\, Max Grafe\, as well as new music by Becky Turro. Dr. Sealey-Ruiz will read from her recent book The Peace Chronicles. \nAfter the performance\, the poet\, performers\, and composers will join audience members for drinks and discussion. \nABOUT THE MUSIC \nThe Peace Chronicles is a two-evening program of poetry and music created as a collaboration between composer collective ICEBERG New Music (www.icebergnewmusic.com) and award-winning poet and scholar Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz (www.yolandasealeyruiz.com). The program premiered to sold-out audiences in New York City in Spring 2022. Each of the newly-composed works included in The Peace Chronicles is inspired by a poem from Dr. Sealey-Ruiz’s book of the same name. In performance\, the words and music are juxtaposed next to one another\, inviting listeners to find connections between the different media. The programs are structured dramatically\, the poems tracing a path from conflict through reconciliation and peace. \nABOUT ICEBERG NEW MUSIC \nICEBERG New Music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. ICEBERG’s mission is to promote the idea that substance\, not surface\, is the heart of music creation and perception. The collective’s ten member composers hail from different schools of thought and cultivate radically different sounds — from musical theater and indie rock to avant-garde sounds and electronic installations — but their contrasting musical languages belie a shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. \nABOUT YOLANDA SEALEY-RUIZ \nDr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz is an award-winning Associate Professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University. Her research focuses on racial literacy in teacher education\, Black girl literacies\, and Black and Latinx male high school students. A sought-after speaker on issues of race\, culturally responsive pedagogy\, and diversity\, Sealey-Ruiz works with K-12 and higher education school communities to increase their racial literacy knowledge and move toward more equitable school experiences for their Black and Latinx students. Sealey-Ruiz appeared in Spike Lee’s “2 Fists Up: We Gon’ Be Alright”\, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter movement and the campus protests at Mizzou. Her co-authored book [with Dr. Detra Price-Dennis] Advancing Racial Literacies in Teacher Education: Toward Activism for Equity in Digital Spaces will be published in April 2021. \nABOUT BLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE \nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. Members of Blueshift are involved in almost every corner of the Memphis music community\, from performing in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, recording in the studio\, teaching at the University of Memphis and Rhodes College\, playing in your favorite local bands\, and composing original music for film. Founded by flutist Jenny Davis and cellist Jonathan Kirkscey in 2016\, Blueshift aims to bring classical music out of the concert hall and into the community. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents JOHNNY GUITAR
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents JOHNNY GUITAR at Crosstown Theater. \nNicholas Ray / 1954 / 110 minutes / Rated M \nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nYou will get to know who JOHNNY GUITAR is in this movie\, but you won’t really care — because the story in JOHNNY GUITAR is rightfully and solidly fixed on the hatred between Vienna\, played by Joan Crawford\, and Emma Small\, played by Mercedes McCambridge. The two actresses notoriously hated each other in real life and the tension between the two seeps onto the screen. JOHNNY GUITAR is ostensibly a Western about a saloon owner (Crawford) balancing her relationship with her local customers and out-of-towner railroad men and possible outlaws versus a local (McCambridge) who wants nothing more than to stir up trouble. JOHNNY GUITAR was a favorite of Shinji Aoyama\, Pedro Almodovar\, Jean-Luc Godard and Francis Truffaut.  \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk with Kirk Whalum & Maysa at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kafe Kirk with Kirk Whalum and special guest Maysa. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors open at 5pm | Show begins at 6pm\nTickets: General Admission $45 (plus fees) \n\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nKIRK WHALUM \nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. \nAn ordained minister\, Kirk has earned a Masters of Art in Religion. It’s in this spirit that he serves his community in various ways when his touring schedule allows. There is also his daily fifteen minute podcast\, Bible In Your Ear (BIYE)\, in which he invites you to listen along as he reads through the Bible in a year. In addition to music and ministry\, Kirk has a passion to educate young\, aspiring musicians and is currently engaged as a music professor at Visible Music College in his hometown of Memphis. \nIn a career spanning decades\, Kirk has a sound that is uniquely his; it is a sound that leaves an indelible imprint on the listener. \nMAYSA \nMaysa is the kind of singer who takes hold of a song and enraptures her audience in the palm of her hands\, as she delivers lyrics\, phrases\, melodies and harmonies in a way that only she can. Blessed with an instantly identifiable honey-toned mezzo-soprano and an undeniably brilliant and magnetic stage presence\, Maysa’s alluring vocals\, candor\,honesty\, humor and purity as an artist make her a rarity in this business. Having collaborated with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Incognito\, Angela Bofill\, Will Downing and Jonathan Butler\, Phil Perry and more…Maysa can hang with the best. It is no wonder she was the recipient of many awards for her work\, including Soul Train’s first Centric Award in 2009\, and her first Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance for her remake of Nancy Wilson’s “QUIET FIRE” in 2014. \nThe Baltimore native\, who grew up in a loving household with amazing parents\, is proudly the mom of one son\, Jazz\, who was born prematurely at 25 weeks while she was on tour with Incognito in 1999. Jazz is now in college studying Photography and Music Production. \nIn 2018\, Maysa became the owner/founder of her own record label\, BLUE VELVET SOUL RECORDS. The company has released 4 singles\, YOU ARE NOT ALONE\, IT’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT\, LOVIN’ YOU IS EASY\, and SOFT WORDS. To celebrate her first record printing \, MAYSA designed a commemorative blue velvet box set with those 4 singles as an EP called THE FAB FIRST FOUR\, in January of 2021. \nMaysa will release her 14th solo studio album entitled\, MUSIC FOR YOUR SOUL in the first quarter of 2022.
