DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kai Pa Ti by the MengCheng Collective. \nThe Second Floor Studios at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, July 23-Saturday\, July 29\, 2023\nTimes: 3-7 pm or by appointment\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nJoin the MengCheng Collective for their week-long exhibition Kai Pa Ti. They will showcase collective works made during their two month long Crosstown Arts residency that were inspired by conversations from their weekly potlucks. \nExhibition hours will be July 23-29\, 3-7 pm or by appointment. Appointments can be made by emailing mengcheng.tn@gmail.com. \nWhat is MengCheng 梦城团 Collective? \nAs artists and makers who grew up in Memphis\, Thandi Cai\, Neena Wang\, Yidan Zeng\, and LiLi Nacht formed this collective to challenge the way our cultural histories have been gathered\, disseminated\, or made invisible. \nMengCheng 梦城 “City of Dreams” is inspired by the Chinese phonetic name for Memphis\, or mèng fēi sī. SUMMARY:Ben Butler Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:Open studio for Crosstown Arts’ artist-in-residence Ben Butler. The studio will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m.\, and Ben will give an artist talk at 2 p.m. \n\nBen Butler received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BA from Bowdoin College.  His work has been exhibited in solo shows in New York at Coleman Burke Gallery and Plane Space\, as well as at Zg Gallery in Chicago\, John Davis Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, and Davidson Galleries in Seattle\, among others.  He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Individual Artist Grant and numerous fellowships at residency programs including the MacDowell Colony\, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art\, and the Ucross Foundation. \nHe currently lives and works in Memphis\, Tennessee and Quogue\, New York.

SUMMARY:Andrea Morales: Open Studio & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST TALK AT 2 PM; PORTRAIT SESSIONS TO FOLLOW\n\nThis summer\, Andrea Morales has been photographing Memphis as part of Crosstown Arts’ Studio Residency program. The Peruvian-born and Miami-raised photographer’s ongoing project looks at the details of life in the city’s neighborhoods (particularly in Crosstown and North Memphis) through documentary and portraiture work. Motivated by her background as a photojournalist at community newspapers\, this addresses a communion of sorts with Memphis as a new home. \nThe studio space afforded by the residency is dubbed “Daisy Curtain” Studio for the season and serves as a means to meet folks while developing studio portraiture practices. Come visit Daisy Curtain\, view some work in progress and learn a little about the documentary process. Folks who come by also have the option of having their portrait made\, perhaps as part of the project\, but mostly because there’s no such thing as a bad face. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Corkey Sinks
DESCRIPTION:Current resident artist Corkey Sinks will give a talk on the work she created during her residency at Crosstown Arts. \nSinks embraces the human tendency to find meaningful patterns within the noise of collective information. Through sculpture\, textiles\, printed matter\, and drawing\, Sinks’ works explore American occultism and self-help culture\, objects manifested through a struggle to understand the systems we occupy. \nCorkey Sinks (b. Dallas\, TX) is an artist based in Memphis\, TN. She received a BA in Media Studies from the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies at the University of Redlands\, CA in 2005 and an MFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. Sinks has exhibited work throughout the United States and Mexico. In 2015\, her book\, Demon Baby Project: Events\, Coincidences\, and Repercussions was published by No Coast. DESCRIPTION:Meet current studio resident Corkey Sinks and see her works in progress. \nSinks’ Samplers reference historical quilting patterns and needlework produced to demonstrate skill. These works often include decorative borders and lines of text. The language often incorporated an inspirational or religious sentiment\, one that illustrated the maker’s values and desires. Sinks culls language from contemporary self-help and diet advertisements on television\, in magazines\, and on social media. \nCorkey Sinks (b. Dallas\, TX) is an artist based in Memphis\, TN.
