As much a community as a band\, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass\, they inspire audiences to hold hands\, gyrate\, howl\, and otherwise slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Chicago-based drummer\, producer\, and sonic collagist Makaya McCraven in the Green Room on Thursday\, March 21. \nDoors at 7 pm | performance at 7:30 pm\n$15 at the door | $10 advance (purchase on Eventbrite) \n\nAbout Makaya McCraven:\nMakaya McCraven is a beat scientist. The bleeding edge drummer\, producer\, and sonic collagist is one of Chicago’s savviest cultural players and a multi-talented force whose inventive process & intuitive\, cinematic style defy categorization. \nFrench-born but raised in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts by expatriate musician parents\, McCraven studied Jazz at the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the mentorship of jazz luminaries Archie Shepp\, Marion Brown\, and Yusef Lateef\, and eventually went on to develop his chops in Chicago’s burgeoning scene. \nHis breakthrough album In the Moment was released with International Anthem Recording Co. (IARC) in 2015 and received widespread acclaim\, proving to be a dramatic statement by McCraven that quickly launched him into the vanguard of not only Internationally-known jazz artists\, but also a niche genre of next-wave composer-producers blurring the boundaries of jazz & electronic music. \nHis recent releases\, the DJ-style mixtape Highly Rare (IARC\,2017) as well as an internationally recorded Where We Come From (CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape) (IARC\, 2018) have been well received globally\, leading to increased bookings in some of the world’s best clubs\, theaters\, and festivals alongside the likes of Corey Wilkes\, Bobby (Baabe) Irving (Miles Davis)\, Ari Brown\, and Bernie Worrell. \nMcCraven is currently on tour and most recently released Universal Beings\, a 2x LP album featuring an A-list of “new” jazz players from New York\, Chicago\, London & Los Angeles.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third installment of the Green Room Sessions\, an exercise in close listening and thoughtful discussion about classic songs and albums from the Stax Records catalog. \nThis month\, Dr. Charles Hughes will examine Isaac Hayes’ seminal album\, Hot Buttered Soul. The anchor of Stax’s massive 27 album and 30 single “Soul Explosion” in 1969\, the album highlights the burgeoning genius of Hayes as a performer and composer. With only five songs and no obvious radio hit\, it was a major risk for both Hayes and the label\, but it paid off\, as the album sold well over a million copies and Hayes became an overnight star. \nJoining Dr. Hughes will be former Stax Records owner Al Bell\, who initiated the “Soul Explosion” and played a key role in encouraging Hayes and other Stax artists to explore new sounds and to use the album format to experiment and bring in new audiences. \nPresented in partnership with Crosstown Arts and Arts First through the First Tennessee Foundation

The series provides the Memphis community the opportunity to get to know and learn more about the talented musicians that make up the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Each month will feature a different musician or small chamber group as soloist or featured ensemble. \n$10 at the door | $7 on Eventbrite in advance | $5 at the door with student ID \n\n  \n \nAbout the musicians:\nBarrie Cooper is Acting Concertmaster of the Memphis Symphony. She started violin studies at four with John Kendall at the Suzuki program of Southern Illinois University\, Edwardsville. She also served as Kendall’s assistant\, traveling across the US and Japan to workshops and conferences. Barrie studied viola (because none of her friends would) in order to join the Più Mosso Quartet\, which gave numerous concerts in the Midwest and East Coast. For two years\, she was Principal Viola in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. After attending Ithaca College\, Barrie graduated from Peabody Conservatory\, where she won the Marbury Violin Competition and the Josef Kasper Prize for excellence in violin performance. Barrie has spent the last 14 summers as Principal Second Violin at the American Institute of Musical Studies orchestra in Graz\, Austria. A die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan\, she shares her home with two beautiful dogs and five wonderful cats. \n \nIn addition to private piano instruction at Rhodes College\, Brian Ray is the departmental collaborative pianist and also teaches piano classes at the University of Memphis. He has been a soloist with the University of Memphis Orchestra and the Memphis Civic Orchestra and has performed extensively as an assisting pianist in voice recitals. His most recent collaborative ventures have included art song recitals of works by Richard Hundley\, Samuel Barber\, Libby Larsen\, and Rebecca Clarke. He has been a student of Allison Nelson and Joan Gilbert. His areas of research include the piano works of Joseph Marx\, piano repertoire of the 20th century\, works for piano ensemble\, and harpsichord.

Wiggins\, and Sheree Renée Thomas. \n\n\nAbout Nicole Mitchell:\nNicole M. Mitchell is an award-winning creative flutist\, composer\, bandleader\, and educator. She is perhaps best known for her work as a flutist\, having developed a unique improvisational language and having been repeatedly awarded “Top Flutist of the Year” by Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association (2010-2017). Mitchell initially emerged from Chicago’s innovative music scene in the late 90s\, and her music celebrates contemporary African American culture.  \nShe is the founder of Black Earth Ensemble\, Black Earth Strings\, Sonic Projections\, and Ice Crystal\, and she composes for contemporary ensembles of varied instrumentation and size\, while incorporating improvisation and a wide aesthetic expression. The former first woman president of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians\, Mitchell celebrates endless possibility by “creating visionary worlds through music that bridge the familiar with the unknown.” Some of her newest work with Black Earth Ensemble explores intercultural collaborations; Bamako*Chicago\, featuring Malian kora master\, Ballake Sissoko\, made its American debut at Chicago’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival in September 2017\, and Mandorla Awakening with Kojiro Umezaki (shakuhachi) and Tatsu Aoki (taiko\, bass\, shamisen)\, was just recently released on FPE records (Chicago) last spring.  \nAs a composer\, Mitchell has been commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture\, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art\, Art Institute of Chicago\, the Stone\, the French American Jazz Exchange\, Chamber Music America (New Works)\, the Chicago Jazz Festival\, ICE\, and the Chicago Sinfonietta. Earlier this year at Crosstown Arts\, Jiana Hunter debuted her sold out Ella Fitzgerald tribute concert\, sponsored by Strictly Jazz Entertainment. \nUsing her artistry to build a philanthropic endeavor\, Jiana Hunter Music/JiJizJam provides classical and commercial music voice training to youth and adults. As an 18-year music education veteran\, Jiana has taught at Visible Music School\, Oakland University\, Arts League of Michigan\, Middle Tennessee State University (workshop presenter)\, Stax Music Academy\, Cincinnati and Shelby County Schools\, School for Creative and Performing Arts\, Marvin L. Winans Academy of Performing Arts. as well as St. Georges Independent Schools.

DESCRIPTION:Join musician/writer Alex Greene for a listening session featuring the sounds of Memphis. \nUsing an app called Loopy HD\, Alex goes through different groups of sounds\, slowly adding and subtracting noises recorded right on the streets of Memphis. You might hear simple sounds\, like feet walking through leaves\, the roar of an overhead jet\, or a leaf blower. You might hear more suggestive sounds\, like music from an amphitheater\, gun shots\, or tornado sirens. They’re all geared to get people thinking about what surrounds them every day\, and — most importantly — what they like or dislike hearing. Participants are given cards they’ll use to rate each sound as positive\, negative\, or neutral. \nIn addition\, Greene will play some of the creative mash-ups that local musicians and producers have contributed\, using field recordings from the Memphis streets. It will be the first public airing of works slated to be collected in a dedicated Memphis 3.0 album.
