SUMMARY:Garrison Starr & LOLO at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:The secret is out! Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for an intimate\, acoustic performance from Garrison Starr and LOLO. \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Performance at 7 pm \n\nAbout Garrison Starr:\nMemphian Garrison Starr is a full-time songwriter now living in Los Angeles. Her songs have been featured on numerous films\, TV shows\, and commercials. In 2016\, Starr collaborated with long time friend\, Margaret Cho\, and produced “American Myth.” The album was nominated for a Grammy in the Comedy category. \nGarrison’s love for truth-telling\, good whiskey\, and human connection has made her a darling of the singer-songwriter world. \nAbout LOLO:\nFrom Jackson\, TN\, LOLO is a show-stopping singer who has “so much music flowing through [her] that it fills two people” (Associated Press). She has proven herself a venerable songwriter\, from penning hits for Panic! At The Disco’s recent #1 blockbuster album to writing a New York Times raved about off-Broadway musical\, “Songbird”. \nHer album\, In Loving Memory of When I Gave a Shit\, is a come-to-Jesus moment for the songstress who moved back to Tennessee after exploring her path on the stages of New York and time in London – a literal reflection of LOLO’s journey on the road back home. With a daring and emotionally charged voice\, her music evokes a hot southern night – rough around the edges but with a velvety quality that soothes the soul.

SUMMARY:Songwriters in the Round
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for Songwriters in the Round\, featuring Will Sexton\, Marcella Simien\, and Delta Joe Sanders. \n\n\nTickets: $10\nDoors open at 7:00pm\nPerformance at 7:30pm \n\nAbout the musicians: \n \nWill Sexton\nWill is a respected artist\, songwriter\, and producer with a list of acclaimed solo albums to his name. Keeping his old ties deep in the heart of Texas\, Will now calls Memphis home with his wife\, singer-songwriter Amy LaVere. Will and Amy have been touring and playing together for a couple of years and have a full schedule playing in the U.S. and Europe in the coming months. Their new CD\, Hallelujah\, I’m A Dreamer is spare and tight\, showcasing Will and Amy’s fine playing styles and beautiful harmonies. \n\n \nMarcella Simien\nAs Willie Mitchell’s son\, the Memphis legend Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell puts it\, “[Simien is] one of the most soulful artists I’ve heard since the glory days of Memphis soul music. Her sound and stage presence are constant reminders that soul music is still alive and well.” \nIn 2015\, Bill Bentley (L.A. Weekly\, Warner Bros. Records\, Vanguard Records) reviewed Marcella and Her Lovers debut EP release on themortonreport.com. Bentley said “Marcella Simien heard it all as a youngster\, no doubt\, and once she double-downed with the Memphis sound\, she found a totally striking new attack on Southern soul.” \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n \nDelta Joe\n“Joe Sander’s heart is shaped like Mississippi. Through it runs a Big Blue River spawning tributaries and capillaries like snakes\, gentle but dangerous — above which hands kudzu\, wisteria\, and other strange vegetation unnameable except by some half-mad\, half-genius horticulturist. His tunes are rare Delta Thundersong birds (endangered and exotic) rising from the mud Byhalian and Greenwooded\, strong meat for most of us who lift our beaks for the plastic manna in squared cellophane. Some of his brilliance pops up unnoticed – queer mushrooms grafted amongst our quotidian grapes\, teaching our souls to say ‘more’ while our understanding reels backward. Joe offers no gratuitous sanctuary. Listening\, one must braid one’s own thread into rope and knead one’s own bread into baked buckets – then dip into th eliving water of Joe’s Big Blue River.” Grace and Peace – John Kilzer \nDelta Joe Sanders has been a regular in the Memphis music scene for the past 30 years. From the church house to the out house\, he plays every venue from the Whiskey A-Go-Go on the Sunset Strip to the Sugar Ditch Social Club in Tunica County. Delta Joe has kept country blues alive. A consummate story teller\, Joe sometimes uses common Blues themes to spin his yarns. Songs of lost love\, liquor\, and bad behavior fill his repertoire. Some are romantic odes colored with southern imagery often with a skewed nostalgic sentiment —“I never did like this beautiful old place.” Some make bold statements of pious\, prophetic poignancy\,” I am gonna quit drinking after the Super Bowl.”

SUMMARY:Black Cream with Abe Partridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by Memphis-based soul group Black Cream with opening act Abe Partridge (a singer/songwriter from Alabama). \nTickets: $5\nDoors open at 7:30 pm | Performance at 8 pm \n\nAbout Black Cream:\nBlack Cream is a newly formed conglomerate of some of Memphis’ musical prodigies. Lead guitarist and good soul TO Crivens flies high with his attention to feel and detail during his solos that make the room stand still. \nThe Band is anchored by bassist\, Dr. Derek Brassel\, the coolest cat in every room\, is unofficially certified as the groove doctor and his bass lines are spell binding. On drums and vocals\, Courtney Barnes displays jaw-dropping skill and vocal finesse\, oftime harmonizing with his brother\, Chris Barnes\, who rounds out the Black Cream team on vocals and percussion with the charismatic presence of a baptist preacher and the vocal abilities of your favorite soul crooner. \n\nAbout Abe Partidge:\nAbe Partridge is a singer/songwriter and visual folk artist from Mobile\, AL. People have said that Abe Partridge sounds older than his chronological age\, and there’s a very good reason for that – he’s packed a lot of living into his 37 years. \nThose experiences\, ranging from the earthy to the surreal\, the spiritual light to the depths of depression\, come together with gripping intensity on Partridge’s second full-length album\, Cotton Fields and Blood for Days. Over the course of ten songs\, this troubadour draws listeners in with a combination of southern gothic storytelling and a dark humor reminiscent of the late Townes Van Zandt – delivered in a gravelly tone that conjures up images of Tom Waits in his barstool warming days.

SUMMARY:The Mystic
DESCRIPTION:On the last Tuesday of each month\, join Crosstown Concourse neighbors and friends for The Mystic. \nSo\, what is The Mystic?\nThe Mystic is a catalyst; through music\, story\, silence and dialogue\, we hope to strengthen our attachment to hopes and dreams. In the mystic\, diversity is a prerequisite for all creativity\, which is why Crosstown Concourse is the perfect home. In The Mystic\, the world is far-better served by different beliefs than it could ever be if limited by rigid uniformity. \nAnd if this doesn’t rock your gypsy soul\, the goal of The Mystic is to not feel better but get better at feeling. \nThe Mystic is hosted by a rotating panel including Rabbi Micah Greenstein\, Chris Miner\, Dr. Scott Morris\, Dr. Sonia Walker and Kirk Whalum. \nAll guests welcome to linger for conversation following our program.

SUMMARY:Sweet Soul Restorative: Yoga with Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Treat yourself to the gift of Restorative Yoga with Live Music. This workshop focuses on the breath\, supported yoga poses\, and gentle somatic movements. Live music\, vibrational sound\, and healing touch will sustain and deepen your experience. \nFree and open to the public. This event is made possible by Lifeworks. \nMore about the event:\nDuring this yoga practice\, feel the body and mind completely relax and tune into the bliss.\n\nYoga postures (asana) are supported with blankets\, blocks\, and bolsters to achieve total relaxation of the body/mind. These supported yoga poses are coupled with gentle somatic movements that will alternately stimulate the brain and relax the body to move toward balance. \nSomatic movements focus on the developmental movement patterns we experienced as growing infants. They will be primarily performed on the floor and on all fours. Physiologically these movements reconnect the neural pathways in the brain\, allowing us to gain more body/mind awareness. Long deep breathing and other rejuvenating breath work will be integral to the practice. \nThe healing vibrational sounds of live music will support the practice. A wide range of ancient instruments from around the world combined with modern looping technology are used to weave an atmospheric soundscape. The music works twofold: First\, it gives the mind a place to focus as the body begins to relax and open; second\, the vibratory nature of this music is very balancing. \nAbout Being: Art: \n\nSean Murphy and Anne J. Froning formed Being:Art in 2004. Since then\, they’ve traveled throughout the United States designing and teaching dance\, yoga\, and live music workshops. Anne is a multidisciplinary artist: dancer\, visual artist\, teaching artist\, and registered yoga teacher with over 35 years of teaching and performing experience. Sean is a professional musician\, composer\, instrument maker\, teaching artist\, and dance musician with over 20 years performing experience.

SUMMARY:SPINS feat. DJ Witnesse
DESCRIPTION:A live monthly DJ series at Crosstown Arts \nThis month: DJ Witnesse (disco/funk/roller boogie)\nCost: $5\nLocation: The Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nThe SPINS series will feature music as diverse as the City of Memphis. Each month\, a rotating line-up of DJs will play everything from old-school Hip-Hop and House to Ultra Lounge and Afrobeat. There’s something for everyone to enjoy. So\, come chill. Come hang. Come party! \n\n\nAbout DJ Witnesse: \nMemphis music historian and sound designer Jason Sims (aka DJ Witnesse) has 25 plus years of experience rocking dance floors\, including a stint as an instructor for the acclaimed Redbull Music Academy. Armed with an affinity for Funk and R&B and a vast knowledge of Delta music\, Sims has acted as a core operator for many local staples including Lord T & Eloise\, Kingpin Skinny Pimp\, Al Kapone\, and even the Memphis Grizzlies.\n\nAs a music archaeologist specializing in Memphis’ Disco/Funk/Roller Boogie heyday of the 1980s\, Sims takes the dance floor on a journey of discovery\, respectfully co-mingling artists well known from that era (such as The Bar-Kay’s and Willie Mitchell) while unearthing vinyl magic from the treasure trove of forgotten Memphis recording studio gems left to gather dust and cobwebs through time and circumstance. These lost musical archives tell the story of Memphis as music mecca\, post-Stax and post-Elvis\, connecting the dots of the landscape through the 45s and LPs that moved house parties\, roller rinks\, and dance floors from Midtown to Melrose and beyond.

SUMMARY:Dean Owens and Wild Ponies at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Scottish singer-songwriter Dean Owens join Nashville-based Wild Ponies for a performance in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $10\nDoors open at 7pm\nPerformance at 7:30pm \nDean Owens is one Scotland’s finest singer-songwriters. Armed with a searingly soulful voice\, skillfully crafted stories and memorably heart-twisting melodies\, he is a compelling and engaging live performer\, with an emotional hurricane of stories and songs. Dean was the frontman of the much-loved Scottish Americana band The Felsons. His music has taken him far and wide\, including Europe\, USA\, and Australia\, touring with artists such as the Mavericks\, Steve Earle\, and Emmylou Harris. \nAlthough they’re based in Nashville\, Wild Ponies have always looked to Southwest Virginia — where bandmates Doug and Telisha Williams were both born and raised — for inspiration. Growing up\, a young Doug Williams spent many an hour watching and learning as his grandfather played banjo alongside local musical legends like Snake and Kyle Dean. Although both of his grandparents have now passed away\, they would surely be proud to see Doug and Telisha gathered in the shed with Snake\, Kyle Dean\, Kilby\, and a diverse handful of the best musicians from Nashville. The result is a broad\, bold approach to Appalachian music\, created by a multi-cultural band whose members span several generations.

SUMMARY:Songwriters In The Round: Mark Stuart\, Brandon Kinder\, and Josh Cosby
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for Songwriters in the Round\, featuring Mark Stuart\, Brandon Kinder\, and Josh Cosby. \nTickets: $10\nDoors open at 7:00pm\nPerformance at 7:30pm \nAbout the musicians: \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMark Stuart\nAs a sideman\, Mark Edgar Stuart has toured with Grammy winner Alvin\nYoungblood Hart\, Jack Oblivian\, and John Paul Keith and cut two records\nwith singer-songwriter Cory Branan. With little fuss or fanfare he\nbecame the go-to bass player for an elite group of record producers\nand artists. In 2010\, he put down his bass\, picked up a guitar\, and\nstarted writing songs he never thought anybody outside his family\nwould ever hear. It’s possible nobody ever would have heard them\neither\, if not for the encouragement of his colleagues. His debut\nearned him “Record Of The Year” by The Memphis Flyer. Mark soaks in\ndetails like a sponge\, and spending so much time in the company of\nstrong songwriters\, it was only a matter of time before these humble\,\nhumorous and\, and sometimes heartbreaking stories found a way to get\nout. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBrandon Kinder\nKinder\, raised in – and now returned to – Memphis\, has spent all of his\nadult life in music. Forming The Rocketboys during college in Abilene\,\nTX\, he and the group moved to Austin thereafter\, gaining much critical\npraise for their EPs and albums. They continue to grow\, having\nrecently toured the US for the sixth time\, as well as a\nsoon-to-be-repeated tour of Germany. However\, along the way\, and in\nsearch of a more personal voice Kinder took a handful of demos and\nreleased a solo project\, “The Wealthy West Volume 1.” Musically\, The\nWealthy West sits between the storied troubadours of the ’60s and\nmodern solo artists such as Bon Iver and Father John Misty; there is a\ngritty quality to his delicate voice – with just enough pain hidden\nbehind fragile beauty to keep the listener guessing. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJosh Cosby\nIt was a dark night\, like many before it in Memphis. Joshua\nAndrew Cosby walked home from rehearsal with his guitar\, case-less\,\nslung over his back. A local homeless man flagged him down\, not for\nmoney but for a story. He explained to Cosby how he had written a song\nabout his ex-wife Micey. There\, on that dimly lit street occurred an\nexchange\, two men playing each other songs of heartbreak and the\nultimate sacrifice. Upon parting ways\, this man revealed his name to\nbe Star. That name became the fixture for one of Memphis’ most\ninventive bands: Star & Micey.

SUMMARY:West Philadelphia Orchestra at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:With a line-up of Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands\, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today’s auto-tuned musical world. \nDoors open at 7 pm | performance at 7:30pm\nTickets: $10 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nThey began playing Romanian ballads\, Macedonian folk-dance songs\, Bulgarian wedding music\, and Klezmer in late 2006\, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original tunes which blend other sounds\, like jazz and classical\, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band\, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass\, they inspire audiences to hold hands\, gyrate\, howl\, and otherwise slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.
