DESCRIPTION:Join us for Songwriters in the Round at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\, featuring Don Bryant\, Susan Marshall\, and Reba Russell. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | performance at 7:30 pm \nAbout the artists:\nDon Bryant began singing when he was 5. He joined his father’s family vocal group\, then formed a gospel quartet for a high school radio gig. The group went secular\, singing pop at WLOK on Dick “Cane” Cole’s popular show. After parting with the DJ\, they took a very real step toward careers when\, as the Four Kings\, they began fronting Willie Mitchell’s band. \nBut the group broke up and Willie anointed Don Bryant as his leading man. Don could also write songs. He was still in his teens when\, in 1960\, Willie was producing the 5 Royales and Don handed him “I Got To Know.” The 5 Royales put it on wax. Don was hot in the spotlight and in the writer’s room. \n\nAs Willie Mitchell carved out his place at Hi Records\, Don was close by. He wrote material for other Hi artists\, including Janet & the Jays and Norman West. Around 1970\, Willie put Don with the Hi label’s newest act\, Ann Peebles\, who burst on the scene with “Part Time Love.” Don looked at this slight young lady and penned “99 Lbs” for her. The relationship warmed\, they co-wrote the hit “I Can’t Stand the Rain” in 1973 and were married the following year. \n\nMemphis artist Susan Marshall began her career Off-Broadway as a leading soprano in the Rep-Company Light Opera of Manhattan. Shortly after moving back to Memphis in 1990\, she began fronting rock-soul band The Mother Station and was signed to a record deal with EastWest / Atlantic Records. \n“Better Off Alone” (a song she co-wrote with Austin Carroll) was recorded by American Idol’s Katherine McPhee for her 2007 self-titled debut which reached #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart. Her songs have also been recorded by international blues divas Ana Popovic and Reba Russell to name a few. \nSusan has toured all over the world as part of the Afghan Whigs\, as well as with Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band. She is also known for her studio and/or stage work with a wide range of superstars; Lucinda Williams\, Keith Richards\, Norah Jones\, Lenny Kravitz\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Ann Peebles\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Alvin Youngblood Hart\, Solomon Burke\, Jim Lauderdale\, Steve Earle\, and Kirk Whalum to name a few. \n\nReba Russell is a name synonymous with the Memphis Music scene. She is a published songwriter\, vocalist\, guitarist\, backing vocalist\, bandleader\, and producer\, as well as a touring and recording artist. \nReba Russell and her band tour throughout the United States and Europe and have released eight independent albums that showcase songwriting and delivery. She is also a highly respected Memphis studio/session vocalist. \nThe list of credits for recording artists that Reba has performed backing vocals in session for is vast. A few notable credits are; U2 (When Love Comes to Town\, BB King/ Bono). Class of 55 Homecoming featuring: Johnny Cash\, Roy Orbison\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Carl Perkins. Huey Lewis and the News\, album; Soulsville. Numerous local/blues/regional acts including Tracy Nelson\, Jim Dickinson\, Sid Selvidge\, and Lucero.

She released her critically acclaimed debut album AHWAR in November 2017 via Nawa Recordings. Backing up her release with extensive world wide touring as a solo set and a four-piece band\, El Shazly has been featured in local and international festivals including Le Guess Who?\, REWIRE\, Best Kept Secret\, Supersonic\, and many more. \nShe continues to compose for film and visual art. Two years in the making\, Ahwar was composed\, written\, and produced by El Shazly herself in collaboration with Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi on co-composition and arrangement duties. He plays regularly with PRIZM\, the Memphis Symphony\, Luna Nova\, and at the Orpheum Theater. He also teaches at the Bellevue School of Performing Arts. Daniel began violin studies with his grandfather Noel Gilbert when Noel was the Music Director of the Germantown Symphony. This early influence planted dual seeds of a love of music and of the violin. Daniel is grateful to Noel for sharing so much of his time and for his patient teaching. Daniel is married to Lori\, also a violinist and they have two sons\, Isai and Calum. \nPraised as a “powerful and finely nuanced soprano” (Rhein-Neckar Zeitung) with “seemingly unlimited vocal possibilities\,” (Augsburger Allgemeine) Sabrina Laney Warren has international acclaim and has performed opera\, concert\, and oratorio works throughout North America and Europe. Solidifying herself as an international artist\, Sabrina has performed as a guest artist with the Festival Durance Luberon in France\, the Eutiner Festspiele in Germany\, the Deutsche-Amerikan Musik Fest in Germany\, and the Differdange International Festival in Luxembourg. As the soprano soloist in the European tour of Ein deutsches Requiem\, her performance was lauded as “a soft-lined\, expressive consolation song full of vocal grace” (Augsburger Allgemeine). She also received critical acclaim for her performance of Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915\, “It was a rare pleasure to hear Warren sing and a pleasure to note the ease in which she soared to the high notes and then plunged into resonant low notes…and after she had committed vocally and emotionally to Agee’s lyrics she had the audience completely in her thrall” (The Oak Ridger). \nIn addition to private piano instruction at Rhodes College\, Brian Ray is the departmental collaborative pianist and also teaches piano classes at the University of Memphis. He has been a soloist with the University of Memphis Orchestra and the Memphis Civic Orchestra and has performed extensively as an assisting pianist in voice recitals. His most recent collaborative ventures have included art song recitals of works by Richard Hundley\, Samuel Barber\, Libby Larsen\, and Rebecca Clarke. He has been a student of Allison Nelson\, and he currently studies with Joan Gilbert. His areas of research include the piano works of Joseph Marx\, piano repertoire of the 20th century\, works for piano ensemble\, and harpsichord.

Come party! \n\nAbout Qemist:\nFrom a young age\, Memphis-based producer and DJ Qemist has had a taste for innovative electronic dance music. Blending genres like underground house\, jersey club\, ballroom house\, and footwork\, Qemist is carving out his niche and finding a place in the vast utopia of internet producer/DJs while also leaving his mark. \nTaking influence from a plethora of artists such as Geotheory\, DJ Rashad\, Jungle\, Kaytranada\, and LSDXOXO\, Qemist has honed into his own lane of genre-bending electronica. His first project ‘9 Club’ released under Rare Nnudes Music was a pivotal shift in his overall style of music making. It was then that Qemist really started to experiment with more off-kilter sounds\, smooth melodies\, and deconstructed beat patterns. The EP has earned him numerous accolades and has even been compared to the works of Clams Casino and Aphex Twin. \nSince its release\, Qemist has continued to hone his sound and create genre-breaking music. In 2017\, Qemist released his ‘Warm. Volume. Theory’ EP on Future-Everything and continues to release mixes through the label.

He is a versatile conductor with broad experience conducting orchestras\, ballet and opera across North and South America and Europe. \nCrust was Assistant Conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra from 2017-2019 where he conducted over thirty-five concerts each season. He also served as Conductor of the Memphis Youth Symphony Program. As the Assistant Conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Maine from 2016-2018\, he conducted a variety of concert series\, helped coordinate the orchestra’s extensive educational programs\, and helped lead a program for concertgoers under 40 called “Symphony and Spirits”. \nCrust was the Assistant Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA (NYO-USA) in the summers of 2017 and 2018\, assisting Michael Tilson Thomas on an Asian tour\, as well as Giancarlo Guerrero\, Marin Alsop and James Ross at Carnegie Hall and in a side-by-side performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has also served as Cover Conductor of the Kansas City Symphony and Nashville Symphony\, Assistant/Cover Conductor of the Boulder Philharmonic and Assistant Conductor of Opera McGill. As a winner of the 2018 Ansbacher Fellowship\, selected by members of the Vienna Philharmonic\, Crust was invited to the Salzburger Festspiele throughout August 2018 with full access to all Festival performances and rehearsals. Furthermore\, Crust was the only American invited as a semi-finalist for the 2018 Nestlé and Salzburg Festival‘s Young Conductors Award\, and worked with the Austrian Ensemble for New Music in May of 2018. \nPraised for her “fervent\, commanding vocal prowess\,” French-American mezzo-soprano STEPHANIE DOCHE (rhymes with posh) was a Handorf Company Artist with Opera Memphis for the 2018-2019 season. While in Memphis she sang the roles of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly\, Cousin Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore\, and Toledo in the professional premiere of new American opera\, The Falling & the Rising. Stephanie is also an Encouragement Award recipient for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions\, West Tennessee district. \nIn 2018\, Stephanie garnered recognition for her “boldly convincing” performance as Idamante in Idomeneo with Opera NEO in San Diego. Other operatic highlights include Dorabella in Così fan tutte\, Mére Marie in Dialogues des Carmélites\, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel\, and La Suora Zelatrice in Suor Angelica. Stephanie performed as Meg March in Little Women with UT Austin Butler Opera Center under the guidance and praise of the opera’s composer\, Mark Adamo. \nImpassioned with a desire to connect through creativity\, Stephanie loves introducing opera to new audiences. As a Handorf Company Artist\, Stephanie was a core member of 30 Days of Opera\, an annual event that presents free opera in Memphis and its surrounding areas every day in September. Also in 2018\, Stephanie performed in the premiere of the new children’s opera\, Jack and Jill and the Happening Hill\, with Salt Marsh Opera. During this community outreach\, Stephanie and company presented the opera to over 5\,000 students in Eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. \nStephanie has been a featured soloist with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, University of Texas Wind Symphony\, Rocky Ridge Music Center\, and the Austin based chamber ensemble\, prismatx\, with whom she performed Schoenberg’s ‘Pierrot Lunaire.’ \nStephanie was born in France to an American mother and Canadian father. A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City and beyond\, and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. In 2018\, Dr. Shults was selected to perform at the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference Friday night headline concert as a featured soloist along with Branford Marsalis. As a graduate student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, Michael was a finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. \n\n\nAs a concert saxophonist Michael Shults has been praised for his “jaw-dropping” and “authoritative” technique (Bill Brownlee of theKansas City Star) and has recently performed by invitation at the College Band Director’s National Association conference\, the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference\, the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association Conference\, and the University of Iowa Festival for New Music. Dr. Shults is a founding faculty member of the Kansas City Saxophone Workshop along with Zach Shemon\, alto saxophonist of the PRISM Quartet. He has also served on the faculty of the Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Workshop at Shell Lake Arts Center and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. He is currently the alto saxophone chair in the Coalescent Quartet. Michael is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis and previously held the same position at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. \nHe is a Yamaha and D’Addario performing artist and performs on their instruments and reeds exclusively.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening with New Orleans-based seven-string jazz guitarist Ted Ludwig with drummer Brian Brown and bassist Joe Vick at the Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $10 \nDoors open at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \n\nAcclaimed seven-string jazz guitarist Ted Ludwig (b. 1974\, New Orleans\, LA) has been a part of the jazz scene in New Orleans since 1997. Throughout that time period\, he has performed for numerous club performances\, festivals\, and recordings. He has released 4 albums as a leader and many more as a versatile sideman and co leader. \nTed earned his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the University of New Orleans Jazz Studies Program\, under the direction of the legendary pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. He received an ASCAP award\, the Louis Armstrong award\, and the Overture to the Cultural Season award for his outstanding musicianship and creativity. Inspired by the recordings of Joe Pass\, Pat Martino\, and Wes Montgomery\, Ludwig soon became one of the most sought after guitarists in the New Orleans jazz scene\, working professionally as a soloist\, and accompanist. \nHe has performed with notable contemporaries such as; Ellis Marsalis\, Peter Bernstein\, Bob Dorough\, Larry Coryell\, Nathan East\, Nicholas Payton\, Howard Alden\, Mundell Lowe\, Rick Margitza\, Julian Labro\, Steve Masakowski\, John Ellis\, Tony Dagradi\, Mike Pellera\, Jason Marsalis\, Ron Eschete’\, Johnny Vidacovich\, Herlin Riley\, and many more. \nIn 2005\, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina\, Ludwig created his own eclectic Jazz Trio gaining instant accolades from critics and musicians alike for his astonishing virtuosity and prolific originality. \nSince 2007\, Ted has maintained a fruitful association with the Infrared Record Label. He has recorded\, produced\, and released four albums as a leader and has continuously performed on many other recordings as a co-leader and sideman. In 2016\, Ludwig had the great opportunity to perform with orchestra an original Jazz Guitar Concerto entitled “Katrina”. The piece was composed by D.J. Sparr and commissioned by The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Ted received rave reviews for his performances of the concerto. \nIn 2016\, Ted was the youngest inductee into The Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. \nHe continues to dazzle audiences from around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Treat yourself to the gift of Restorative Yoga with Live Music. This workshop focuses on the breath\, supported yoga poses\, and gentle somatic movements. Live music\, vibrational sound\, and healing touch will sustain and deepen your experience. \nFree and open to the public. This event is made possible by Lifeworks. \nMore about the event:\nDuring this yoga practice\, feel the body and mind completely relax and tune into the bliss.\n\nYoga postures (asana) are supported with blankets\, blocks\, and bolsters to achieve total relaxation of the body/mind. These supported yoga poses are coupled with gentle somatic movements that will alternately stimulate the brain and relax the body to move toward balance. \nSomatic movements focus on the developmental movement patterns we experienced as growing infants. They will be primarily performed on the floor and on all fours. Physiologically these movements reconnect the neural pathways in the brain\, allowing us to gain more body/mind awareness. Long deep breathing and other rejuvenating breath work will be integral to the practice. \nThe healing vibrational sounds of live music will support the practice. A wide range of ancient instruments from around the world combined with modern looping technology are used to weave an atmospheric soundscape. The music works twofold: First\, it gives the mind a place to focus as the body begins to relax and open; second\, the vibratory nature of this music is very balancing. \nAbout Being: Art: \n\nSean Murphy and Anne J. Froning formed Being:Art in 2004. Since then\, they’ve traveled throughout the United States designing and teaching dance\, yoga\, and live music workshops. Anne is a multidisciplinary artist: dancer\, visual artist\, teaching artist\, and registered yoga teacher with over 35 years of teaching and performing experience. Sean is a professional musician\, composer\, instrument maker\, teaching artist\, and dance musician with over 20 years performing experience.

Come party! \n\n\nAbout DJ Witnesse: \nMemphis music historian and sound designer Jason Sims (aka DJ Witnesse) has 25 plus years of experience rocking dance floors\, including a stint as an instructor for the acclaimed Redbull Music Academy. Armed with an affinity for Funk and R&B and a vast knowledge of Delta music\, Sims has acted as a core operator for many local staples including Lord T & Eloise\, Kingpin Skinny Pimp\, Al Kapone\, and even the Memphis Grizzlies.\n\nAs a music archaeologist specializing in Memphis’ Disco/Funk/Roller Boogie heyday of the 1980s\, Sims takes the dance floor on a journey of discovery\, respectfully co-mingling artists well known from that era (such as The Bar-Kay’s and Willie Mitchell) while unearthing vinyl magic from the treasure trove of forgotten Memphis recording studio gems left to gather dust and cobwebs through time and circumstance. DESCRIPTION:Hear Crosstown Arts resident artists Natalie Hoffmann (Optic Sink) and Yazan Fahmawi in a special performance at the Green Room. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | show at 7:30 pm \nOptic Sink is a new post-punk/electronic collaboration between Natalie Hoffmann of Nots and Ben Bauermeister of A55 Conducta / DJ Damp Velour. \nYazan is a singer\, guitarist\, and songwriter originally from New York\, playing a blend of country blues\, folk\, and psychedelia. Yazan is a self-taught musician of Palestinian lineage who has had a 20-year\, long-distance relationship with the Memphis music scene. He uses his music practice to amplify a social consciousness and to encourage others to find their creative practice. Yazan has recorded and released several full-length albums with Shoulder Tap records and the album Hahaha with Exploding in Sound Records in 2018. He has toured and performed in Europe and the US and collaborated with a long list of individuals and bands.

Armed with a searingly soulful voice\, skillfully crafted stories and memorably heart-twisting melodies\, he is a compelling and engaging live performer\, with an emotional hurricane of stories and songs. Dean was the frontman of the much-loved Scottish Americana band The Felsons.His music has taken him far and wide\, including Europe\, USA\, and Australia\, touring with artists such as the Mavericks\, Steve Earle\, and Emmylou Harris. \nAlthough they’re based in Nashville\, Wild Ponies have always looked to Southwest Virginia — where bandmates Doug and Telisha Williams were both born and raised — for inspiration. Growing up\, a young Doug Williams spent many an hour watching and learning as his grandfather played banjo alongside local musical legends like Snake and Kyle Dean. Although both of his grandparents have now passed away\, they would surely be proud to see Doug and Telisha gathered in the shed with Snake\, Kyle Dean\, Kilby\, and a diverse handful of the best musicians from Nashville. The result is a broad\, bold approach to Appalachian music\, created by a multi-cultural band whose members span several generations.

With little fuss or fanfare he\nbecame the go-to bass player for an elite group of record producers\nand artists. In 2010\, he put down his bass\, picked up a guitar\, and\nstarted writing songs he never thought anybody outside his family\nwould ever hear. It’s possible nobody ever would have heard them\neither\, if not for the encouragement of his colleagues. His debut\nearned him “Record Of The Year” by The Memphis Flyer. Mark soaks in\ndetails like a sponge\, and spending so much time in the company of\nstrong songwriters\, it was only a matter of time before these humble\,\nhumorous and\, and sometimes heartbreaking stories found a way to get\nout. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBrandon Kinder\nKinder\, raised in – and now returned to – Memphis\, has spent all of his\nadult life in music. Forming The Rocketboys during college in Abilene\,\nTX\, he and the group moved to Austin thereafter\, gaining much critical\npraise for their EPs and albums. They continue to grow\, having\nrecently toured the US for the sixth time\, as well as a\nsoon-to-be-repeated tour of Germany. However\, along the way\, and in\nsearch of a more personal voice Kinder took a handful of demos and\nreleased a solo project\, “The Wealthy West Volume 1.” Musically\, The\nWealthy West sits between the storied troubadours of the ’60s and\nmodern solo artists such as Bon Iver and Father John Misty; there is a\ngritty quality to his delicate voice – with just enough pain hidden\nbehind fragile beauty to keep the listener guessing. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJosh Cosby\nIt was a dark night\, like many before it in Memphis. Joshua\nAndrew Cosby walked home from rehearsal with his guitar\, case-less\,\nslung over his back. A local homeless man flagged him down\, not for\nmoney but for a story. He explained to Cosby how he had written a song\nabout his ex-wife Micey. There\, on that dimly lit street occurred an\nexchange\, two men playing each other songs of heartbreak and the\nultimate sacrifice. Upon parting ways\, this man revealed his name to\nbe Star. That name became the fixture for one of Memphis’ most\ninventive bands: Star & Micey.

Her works create surreal narratives that question her Southern upbringing and traditional gender roles. In the fall of 2019\, she’ll be attending the University of Colorado Boulder to pursue an MFA in painting. \nBig Red & the Cuties – A new and limited edition pop up group led by Daniel Quinlan and Eric Martin of the Memphis psych pop group known as Spaceface. The group reflects the influence of the members past songwriting and show production\, but works to bring the listeners a simpler retro era sound blended with unmistakeable ’60s homage garnished with current components in a way that mixes the two elements perfectly. Joined on stage by a cast of familiar Memphis talent\, the quintet is exemplary good mood material. \nN Y A – Brilliant local DJ Nya Sanders has really made a name for herself in the past few years with her wealth of musical knowledge and expertise.
