The series provides the Memphis community the opportunity to get to know and learn more about the talented musicians that make up the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Each month will feature a different musician or small chamber group as soloist or featured ensemble. \n\nAbout the artists:\nPraised by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for her “superb command of color and nuance\,” Elise Blatchford is the Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of Memphis Scheidt School of Music and interim Principal Flute of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. \nA chamber musician\, soloist\, orchestral musician\, and teacher\, Ms. Blatchford is a flutist who embraces the independent\, the experimental\, and the DIY. She was selected by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) to be a 2017 fellow of their Ensemble Evolution program at the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity. \nAs a founding member of the woodwind quintet The City of Tomorrow\, Ms. Blatchford won the gold medal of the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition in 2011\, and received a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning grant in 2014. The quintet has commissioned new works from composers Hannah Lash\, Nat Evans\, and John Aylward\, among others. \nAs a recitalist\, Ms. Blatchford frequently programs music of the 20th and 21st centuries\, and has been an invited guest at venues across the U.S.\, including Indiana University\, University of Oregon\, and Yale University. \nAlso at home in the traditional orchestra world\, Ms. Blatchford will serve as interim Principal Flute for the Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s 2018-19 season. She has performed with the Oregon Symphony\, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, and the YOA Orchestra of the Americas. With YOA\, she toured extensively throughout South America\, the Caribbean\, and mainland China; made an appearance at Carnegie Hall with Valery Gergiev; and recorded with Philip Glass. \nA devoted and energetic pedagogue\, Ms. Blatchford works to instill versatile musicianship in her students\, so that they can create sustainable and varied careers. She has given master classes at New England Conservatory\, Williams College\, Longy School of Music\, and Skidmore College\, among many others. She holds degrees in flute performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory. \nA Powell Artist\, Ms. Blatchford performs on a 14K gold handmade Powell flute. \nAdrienne Park is the Principal Pianist of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and has performed with IRIS Orchestra\, the Memphis Chamber Music Society and with PRIZM Ensemble. As a collaborative pianist\, she has performed recitals with violinist Joshua Bell\, cellists Shauna Rolston and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi\, bassist Edgar Meyer\, flutists Paul Edmond-Davies and Timothy Hutchins\, the percussion group NEXUS and composer Steve Reich. In the fall of 2011\, Adrienne was invited to appear as a soloist with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra performing Poulenc’s Concerto for two pianos in d minor under the direction of Mei-Ann Chen with Steinway Artist Victor Santiago Asuncion. She has been on faculty at the University of Mississippi as a collaborative pianist for the instrumental department since 2011 and has been a faculty member of the Piano Discoveries Camp since its inception in 2007. \nShe enjoys playing a wide range of chamber music and contemporary music for the piano\, celeste\, harpsichord\, synthesizer\, toy piano and percussion. With percussionist David Carlisle\, Adrienne co-founded DivaDi\, a duo who performs eclectic and exciting repertoire that often draws from multiple styles of music. DivaDi was a guest artist at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis in 2009\, performing Carlisle’s percussion duet “Mad Cow.” \nShe recently created a new chamber series at the University of Mississippi entitled Sonic Explorations. The inaugural concert in 2013 presented instrumental and vocal works by British composers Gerald Finzi and Rebecca Clarke and an arrangement of “Eleanor Rigby” by David Carlisle. The second installment featured instrumental chamber works by Robert Schumann\, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. This season Sonic Explorations will be opening with two world premieres for piano and percussion intertwined with arrangements of suites by Bach for vibraphone\, marimba and piano. \nAt the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada\, Adrienne was the faculty pianist for the fall and winter residencies from 1994 to 2000 and for various summer instrumental master classes. In 2007 at Banff\, she gave the world première of a horn trio by Wolfgang Plagge with hornist Frøydis Ree Wekre and violinist Mark Fewer. \nWhile living in Vancouver\, British Columbia\, she worked with Kokoro Dance Company and composer Robert Rosen for the productions of Sunyata\, Truths of the Blood\, Sade\, Part II\, Encounters with the Goddess and Dance of the Dead. She also worked with Joe Ink Dance as a member of a contemporary quintet and with John Korsrud’s Hard Rubber Orchestra\, a contemporary big band. \nAdrienne studied with Abbey Simon and Ruth Tomfohrde at the University of Houston\, where she received a Bachelor of Music and graduated summa cum laude. She also studied with Robert Silverman at the University of British Columbia\, where she received a Master of Music and graduated with first class standing. In addition\, she was a frequent Resident Artist at the Banff Centre’s Music and Sound Program\, directed by Isobel and Tom Rolston.

This performance will be recorded for broadcast on Memphis own internationally syndicated radio program\, Beale Street Caravan. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7:30 pm | Show at 8 pm \n\n\nAbout Susan Marshall:\nMemphis artist Susan Marshall began her career Off-Broadway as a leading soprano in the Rep-Company Light Opera of Manhattan. Shortly after moving back to Memphis in 1990\, she began fronting rock-soul band The Mother Station and was signed to a record deal with EastWest / Atlantic Records. \n“Better Off Alone” (a song she co-wrote with Austin Carroll) was recorded by American Idol’s Katherine McPhee for her 2007 self-titled debut which reached #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart. Her songs have also been recorded by international blues divas Ana Popovic and Reba Russell to name a few. \nSusan has toured all over the world as part of the Afghan Whigs as well as with Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band. She is also known for her studio and/or stage work with a wide range of superstars; Lucinda Williams\, Keith Richards\, Norah Jones\, Lenny Kravitz\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Ann Peebles\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Alvin Youngblood Hart\, Solomon Burke\, Jim Lauderdale\, Steve Earle\, and Kirk Whalum to name a few.

DJ Andrew McCalla will be spinning records throughout night around the Rising Stars’ performance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7:30pm | Show at 8pm \n\nAbout the artists:\nNational Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow recipient and famed fife player Otha Turner— who founded the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band— loved telling the story of how his granddaughter Shardé Thomas simply strode up to him one day\, grabbed a cane\, and began blowing into it. Within a few years\, Thomas was filling in at recording sessions and performing with Rising Star at picnics. \nThomas is now an American singer and fife player in her own right within the vanishing American fife and drum blues tradition. She still makes her fifes by hand out of cane\, hollowing it out with a heated metal rod—just as Turner did. Within a region overflowing with musical talent\, they stand apart as authentic practitioners of one of the most unique forms of American music. She calls the band “Rising Stars” because\, she says\, that’s what they are. \n

The lone surviving Mudboy\, Jimmy Crosthwait is with them\, playing his 100 year old washboard to keep them on that path. He joined his father’s family vocal group\, then formed a gospel quartet for a high school radio gig. The group went secular\, singing pop at WLOK on Dick “Cane” Cole’s popular show. After parting with the DJ\, they took a very real step toward careers when\, as the Four Kings\, they began fronting Willie Mitchell’s band. \nBut the group broke up and Willie anointed Don Bryant as his leading man. Don could also write songs. He was still in his teens when\, in 1960\, Willie was producing the 5 Royales and Don handed him “I Got To Know.” The 5 Royales put it on wax. Don was hot in the spotlight and in the writer’s room. \n\nAs Willie Mitchell carved out his place at Hi Records\, Don was close by. He wrote material for other Hi artists\, including Janet & the Jays and Norman West. Around 1970\, Willie put Don with the Hi label’s newest act\, Ann Peebles\, who burst on the scene with “Part Time Love.” Don looked at this slight young lady and penned “99 Lbs” for her. The relationship warmed\, they co-wrote the hit “I Can’t Stand the Rain” in 1973 and were married the following year. \n\nMemphis artist Susan Marshall began her career Off-Broadway as a leading soprano in the Rep-Company Light Opera of Manhattan. Shortly after moving back to Memphis in 1990\, she began fronting rock-soul band The Mother Station and was signed to a record deal with EastWest / Atlantic Records. \n“Better Off Alone” (a song she co-wrote with Austin Carroll) was recorded by American Idol’s Katherine McPhee for her 2007 self-titled debut which reached #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart. Her songs have also been recorded by international blues divas Ana Popovic and Reba Russell to name a few. \nSusan has toured all over the world as part of the Afghan Whigs\, as well as with Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band. She is also known for her studio and/or stage work with a wide range of superstars; Lucinda Williams\, Keith Richards\, Norah Jones\, Lenny Kravitz\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Ann Peebles\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Alvin Youngblood Hart\, Solomon Burke\, Jim Lauderdale\, Steve Earle\, and Kirk Whalum to name a few. \n\nReba Russell is a name synonymous with the Memphis Music scene. She is a published songwriter\, vocalist\, guitarist\, backing vocalist\, bandleader\, and producer\, as well as a touring and recording artist. \nReba Russell and her band tour throughout the United States and Europe and have released eight independent albums that showcase songwriting and delivery. She is also a highly respected Memphis studio/session vocalist. \nThe list of credits for recording artists that Reba has performed backing vocals in session for is vast. He plays regularly with PRIZM\, the Memphis Symphony\, Luna Nova\, and at the Orpheum Theater. He also teaches at the Bellevue School of Performing Arts. Daniel began violin studies with his grandfather Noel Gilbert when Noel was the Music Director of the Germantown Symphony. This early influence planted dual seeds of a love of music and of the violin. Daniel is grateful to Noel for sharing so much of his time and for his patient teaching. Daniel is married to Lori\, also a violinist and they have two sons\, Isai and Calum. \nPraised as a “powerful and finely nuanced soprano” (Rhein-Neckar Zeitung) with “seemingly unlimited vocal possibilities\,” (Augsburger Allgemeine) Sabrina Laney Warren has international acclaim and has performed opera\, concert\, and oratorio works throughout North America and Europe. Solidifying herself as an international artist\, Sabrina has performed as a guest artist with the Festival Durance Luberon in France\, the Eutiner Festspiele in Germany\, the Deutsche-Amerikan Musik Fest in Germany\, and the Differdange International Festival in Luxembourg. As the soprano soloist in the European tour of Ein deutsches Requiem\, her performance was lauded as “a soft-lined\, expressive consolation song full of vocal grace” (Augsburger Allgemeine). She also received critical acclaim for her performance of Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915\, “It was a rare pleasure to hear Warren sing and a pleasure to note the ease in which she soared to the high notes and then plunged into resonant low notes…and after she had committed vocally and emotionally to Agee’s lyrics she had the audience completely in her thrall” (The Oak Ridger). \nIn addition to private piano instruction at Rhodes College\, Brian Ray is the departmental collaborative pianist and also teaches piano classes at the University of Memphis. He has been a soloist with the University of Memphis Orchestra and the Memphis Civic Orchestra and has performed extensively as an assisting pianist in voice recitals. His most recent collaborative ventures have included art song recitals of works by Richard Hundley\, Samuel Barber\, Libby Larsen\, and Rebecca Clarke. He has been a student of Allison Nelson\, and he currently studies with Joan Gilbert. His areas of research include the piano works of Joseph Marx\, piano repertoire of the 20th century\, works for piano ensemble\, and harpsichord.

Each month will feature a different musician or small chamber group as soloist or featured ensemble.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Bios:\nANDREW CRUST is the newly-appointed Assistant Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (beginning in 19/20) where he will conduct a large number of subscription concerts\, Kids concerts\, Pops\, as well as the innovative Annex Series and Tea and Trumpets Series each season. He is a versatile conductor with broad experience conducting orchestras\, ballet and opera across North and South America and Europe. \nCrust was Assistant Conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra from 2017-2019 where he conducted over thirty-five concerts each season. He also served as Conductor of the Memphis Youth Symphony Program. As the Assistant Conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Maine from 2016-2018\, he conducted a variety of concert series\, helped coordinate the orchestra’s extensive educational programs\, and helped lead a program for concertgoers under 40 called “Symphony and Spirits”. \nCrust was the Assistant Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA (NYO-USA) in the summers of 2017 and 2018\, assisting Michael Tilson Thomas on an Asian tour\, as well as Giancarlo Guerrero\, Marin Alsop and James Ross at Carnegie Hall and in a side-by-side performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has also served as Cover Conductor of the Kansas City Symphony and Nashville Symphony\, Assistant/Cover Conductor of the Boulder Philharmonic and Assistant Conductor of Opera McGill. As a winner of the 2018 Ansbacher Fellowship\, selected by members of the Vienna Philharmonic\, Crust was invited to the Salzburger Festspiele throughout August 2018 with full access to all Festival performances and rehearsals. Furthermore\, Crust was the only American invited as a semi-finalist for the 2018 Nestlé and Salzburg Festival‘s Young Conductors Award\, and worked with the Austrian Ensemble for New Music in May of 2018. \nPraised for her “fervent\, commanding vocal prowess\,” French-American mezzo-soprano STEPHANIE DOCHE (rhymes with posh) was a Handorf Company Artist with Opera Memphis for the 2018-2019 season. While in Memphis she sang the roles of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly\, Cousin Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore\, and Toledo in the professional premiere of new American opera\, The Falling & the Rising. Stephanie is also an Encouragement Award recipient for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions\, West Tennessee district. \nIn 2018\, Stephanie garnered recognition for her “boldly convincing” performance as Idamante in Idomeneo with Opera NEO in San Diego. Other operatic highlights include Dorabella in Così fan tutte\, Mére Marie in Dialogues des Carmélites\, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel\, and La Suora Zelatrice in Suor Angelica. Stephanie performed as Meg March in Little Women with UT Austin Butler Opera Center under the guidance and praise of the opera’s composer\, Mark Adamo. \nImpassioned with a desire to connect through creativity\, Stephanie loves introducing opera to new audiences. As a Handorf Company Artist\, Stephanie was a core member of 30 Days of Opera\, an annual event that presents free opera in Memphis and its surrounding areas every day in September. Also in 2018\, Stephanie performed in the premiere of the new children’s opera\, Jack and Jill and the Happening Hill\, with Salt Marsh Opera. During this community outreach\, Stephanie and company presented the opera to over 5\,000 students in Eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. \nStephanie has been a featured soloist with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, University of Texas Wind Symphony\, Rocky Ridge Music Center\, and the Austin based chamber ensemble\, prismatx\, with whom she performed Schoenberg’s ‘Pierrot Lunaire.’ \nStephanie was born in France to an American mother and Canadian father. When she was four years old\, Stephanie and her family moved to Rochester\, New York\, where she was raised.

A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City and beyond\, and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. In 2018\, Dr. Shults was selected to perform at the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference Friday night headline concert as a featured soloist along with Branford Marsalis. As a graduate student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, Michael was a finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. \n\n\nAs a concert saxophonist Michael Shults has been praised for his “jaw-dropping” and “authoritative” technique (Bill Brownlee of theKansas City Star) and has recently performed by invitation at the College Band Director’s National Association conference\, the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference\, the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association Conference\, and the University of Iowa Festival for New Music. Dr. Shults is a founding faculty member of the Kansas City Saxophone Workshop along with Zach Shemon\, alto saxophonist of the PRISM Quartet. He has also served on the faculty of the Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Workshop at Shell Lake Arts Center and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. He is currently the alto saxophone chair in the Coalescent Quartet. Michael is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis and previously held the same position at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. \nHe is a Yamaha and D’Addario performing artist and performs on their instruments and reeds exclusively.

Throughout that time period\, he has performed for numerous club performances\, festivals\, and recordings. He has released 4 albums as a leader and many more as a versatile sideman and co leader. \nTed earned his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the University of New Orleans Jazz Studies Program\, under the direction of the legendary pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. He received an ASCAP award\, the Louis Armstrong award\, and the Overture to the Cultural Season award for his outstanding musicianship and creativity. Inspired by the recordings of Joe Pass\, Pat Martino\, and Wes Montgomery\, Ludwig soon became one of the most sought after guitarists in the New Orleans jazz scene\, working professionally as a soloist\, and accompanist. \nHe has performed with notable contemporaries such as; Ellis Marsalis\, Peter Bernstein\, Bob Dorough\, Larry Coryell\, Nathan East\, Nicholas Payton\, Howard Alden\, Mundell Lowe\, Rick Margitza\, Julian Labro\, Steve Masakowski\, John Ellis\, Tony Dagradi\, Mike Pellera\, Jason Marsalis\, Ron Eschete’\, Johnny Vidacovich\, Herlin Riley\, and many more. \nIn 2005\, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina\, Ludwig created his own eclectic Jazz Trio gaining instant accolades from critics and musicians alike for his astonishing virtuosity and prolific originality. \nSince 2007\, Ted has maintained a fruitful association with the Infrared Record Label. He has recorded\, produced\, and released four albums as a leader and has continuously performed on many other recordings as a co-leader and sideman. In 2016\, Ludwig had the great opportunity to perform with orchestra an original Jazz Guitar Concerto entitled “Katrina”. The piece was composed by D.J. Sparr and commissioned by The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Ted received rave reviews for his performances of the concerto. \nIn 2016\, Ted was the youngest inductee into The Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. \nHe continues to dazzle audiences from around the world.

His two most recent releases were an album of duets with Brigitte DeMeyer in 2017\, called “Mockingbird Soul\,” and the just out “Daddy Let’s Do This!”\, Daddy’s Third album (with Tommy Womack)\, soon to be in full distribution. Other collaborations include Alabama power group Willie Sugarcapps. As Americana Music Association 2004 Instrumentalist of the Year recipient\, Will’s solo albums have always been well-received\, critically acclaimed and always well supported at Americana Radio. \nThe same can be said of his other collaborations.
