SUMMARY:The Lost Wages with Sister Justice & Jesse Cole
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by The Lost Wages in The Green Room\, with opening acts Jessie Cole and Sister Justice. \nTickets: $14\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nMemphis natives\, The Lost Wages\, return again to The Green Room on Friday September 27. The show will be opened by fellow Memphian singer/songwriter Jesse Cole\, as well as traditional country sister-duo (Leah and Lacy Blevins)\, Sister Justice. \nThe Lost Wages is a sibling-led Americana band from Millington\, TN. Lead singers/songwriters\, Houston and Cyrena Wages\, fuse honky-tonk edge with anthemic melodies reminiscent of the ’70s Laurel Canyon scene and soulful ballads that nod at the nature that makes Memphis\, Memphis. Now based in East Nashville\, the two children of a small-town judge elicit an unapologetic thumbprint and a “fresh take on a nostalgic sound.” \nPrevious credits include opening for hero Emmylou Harris\, being voted “Top 3 Best Local Bands” by the Nashville Scene\, being named “Country Rock Revivalists” by Pandora Radio\, and landing a track in a major motion picture starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. \nIn late 2018\, The Lost Wages released their debut EP\, “Rose Motel.” The band’s breakout video for single\, “Drunk and Forget\,” is in rotation now on CMT. Houston and Cyrena are currently completing solo projects\, alongside a new TLW project\, all slated to release in 2020. \n

SUMMARY:Those Pretty Wrongs at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for Those Pretty Wrongs\, a musical partnership between Jody Stephens (of Big Star) and Luther Russell. Also featuring members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra —  Jessie Munson\, Yennifer Correia\, Beth Luscombe\, and Jonathan Kirkscey. \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nThose Pretty Wrongs are Jody Stephens and Luther Russell. It’s a musical partnership borne of a deep and lasting friendship\, the roots of which stretch back to the early ’90s\, when the two were introduced. As the story goes\, nary a note of music was made between them until about five years ago\, when they were united in the cause of a documentary about Jody’s alma mater\, the legendary Memphis group Big Star. After releasing their self-titled debut on Ardent/Burger in 2016 to a healthy dose of acclaim\, they went out on the road\, playing for audiences across North America\, Australia\, Europe\, and the U.K. \nDuring the course of these runs\, they began to forge the sound for their second offering\, Zed for Zulu\, due out September 6\, 2019 on Burger Records\, a meditation on communication or lack thereof\, the ever-present past or the question of the future\, inevitable death\, or imminent re-birth. The music is colorful but muted\, something complex woven in a simple way. It’s a symphony of chords and melodies\, yet played in an understated fashion\, without too much fuss. Those Pretty Wrongs don’t have time to fuss\, as Luther dwells in Los Angeles and Jody resides in Memphis. And they like it that way.

SUMMARY:Katharine Hedlund at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by Katharine Hedlund. \nJoin jazz vocalist/pianist Katharine Hedlund for a special live album recording performance at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts with Paul Taylor\, Jim Spake\, and Carl Caspersen. Katherine Hedlund was becoming quite the fixture and turning heads in Memphis before she departed for San Francisco in 2018\, and we are thrilled to be hosting her in a rare return appearance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance 7:30 pm \n\n \n\n\n \n  \n\nKatharine Hedlund is a jazz/soul pianist and vocalist with a musicality far beyond her years. Katharine grew up in Darien\, CT\, and began her professional performing career at 13 years old\, playing original renditions of jazz standards with her trio in local clubs around the New York metro area. Her performances frequently invite comparison to Diana Krall and Norah Jones – but with quite a bit more sass than either of the former! \nKatharine attended Northwestern University in Chicago\, IL \,to continue musical studies with the renowned saxophonist of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Victor Goines\, and soulful Grammy-winning pianist for vocalist Diane Reeves\, Peter Martin. She was awarded the highly competitive piano chair of the school’s premier touring graduate small ensemble as an undergraduate. \nShe has performed in some of Jazz’s most prestigious venues\, including The Green Mill Chicago\, The Jazz Showcase Chicago\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola of Jazz at Lincoln Center NYC\, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, Germantown Performing Arts Center\, The Sound Room (Oakland\, CA)\, among others. \nKatharine relocated to Memphis after graduation from Northwestern and began performing weekly at the historic Peabody Hotel and the Zebra Lounge in Overton Square\, honing her skills in voice and piano in soul\, blues\, and pop styles. Katharine has since moved to San Francisco\, but Memphis will always be her musical home.

SUMMARY:Kevin Morby – Duo Tour w/ Support from William Tyler
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by singer-songwriter Kevin Morby in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. Opening for Kevin is William Tyler (Lambchop/Silver Jews). \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7:30pm | Show at 8pm \nAbout Kevin Morby:\nKevin Morby released his beloved solo debut Harlem River in 2013 and has released a full-length nearly every year since. His latest\, 2017’s City Music\, is a collection Kevin says “is a mix-tape\, a fever dream\, a love letter dedicated to those cities that I cannot get rid of\, to those cities that are all inside of me.” \nAbout William Tyler:\n“William Tyler knows the South — as a crucible of American histories and cultures\, an entity capable of expansive beauty and incomprehensible violence\, often in the same beat — as his native place\, the place that holds him and that he runs from. In the music of William Tyler\, the South is not apart from America; the South is America condensed. \n“William’s latest album\, Goes West\, marks a sort of narrowing of focus for his music; it sounds as though he found a way to point himself directly towards the rich and bittersweet emotional center of his music without being distracted by side trips. Perhaps this is down to the fact that William only plays acoustic guitar on the album\, a clear and conscious decision considering that he is one of Nashville’s great electric guitarists. The band that performs Goes West alongside William—including guitarists Meg Duffy and Bill Frisell\, bassist and producer Brad Cook\, keyboardist James Wallace\, drummer Griffin Goldsmith\, and engineer Tucker Martine—is the best and most sympathetic group of players that William could have assembled to play these songs.” — M.C. Taylor \n

SUMMARY:Live Score to Seijun Suzuki's Detective Bureau 2-3: Go To Hell Bastards!
DESCRIPTION:Memphis-based Detective Bureau presents a live score of Seijun Suzuki’s “Detective Bureau 2-3: Go To Hell Bastards!” \nDetective Bureau explores late ’60s and early ’70s Afro-Brazilian soul jazz stylings. Featuring Joe Restivo (guitar)\, Marc Franklin (trumpet)\, Landon Moore (bass)\, Pat Fusco (keys)\, George Sluppick (drums)\, and Felix Hernandez (percussion). \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7:30pm | Performance 8pm \nSeijun Suzuki was a Japanese filmmaker\, actor\, and screenwriter. His films are known for their jarring visual style\, irreverent humor\, nihilistic cool\, and entertainment-over-logic sensibility. He made 40 predominately B-movies for the Nikkatsu Company between 1956 and 1967\, working most prolifically in the yakuza genre. His increasingly surreal style began to draw the ire of the studio in 1963 and culminated in his ultimate dismissal for what is now regarded as his magnum opus\, Branded to Kill (1967). \n

SUMMARY:The Orrin Evans Trio at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for a performance by jazz pianist Orrin Evans. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Show at 7:30pm \nMany may know Orrin Evans as the pianist for Jazz juggernauts The Bad Plus. But with more than 25 albums to his credit\, without ever relying on the support of a major label\, Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who’s made a habit of rattling the jazz world’s confining cages. That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. \nAs a daring pianist\, Evans combines raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance into a sound wholly his own. As an adventurous composer he traverses stylistic boundaries with abandon\, drawing on full-throttle swing\, deep-rooted blues\, expressive soul\, or bracing excursions into the avant-garde. As an audacious bandleader\, he delights in daring fellow musicians to take bold risks\, whether in mutable small group settings or his raucous Captain Black Big Band. As an inventive collaborator\, his projects range from the nerve-rattling collective trio Tarbaby to the latest twist in his never predictable story\, becoming the first new member to join The Bad Plus in the band’s nearly 20-year history. \nEvans’ broad-minded\, provocative approach has led to a stunning variety of collaborations with a who’s-who of modern jazz including Nicholas Payton\, Sean Jones\, Oliver Lake\, JD Allen\, Christian McBride\, Eric Revis\, Buster Williams\, Karriem Riggins\, Bill Stewart\, Nasheet Waits\, Kevin Eubanks and Kurt Rosenwinkel\, among countless others. \nIn 2018\, Evans relaunched his Imani Records label with a newfound focus on projects by young\, innovative musicians\, beginning with albums by saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis and bassist Jonathan Michel. He’s also produced recordings by JD Walter\, Denise King\, Joanna Pascale\, Sharel Cassity\, and Eric Revis. \nEvans pays homage to his mentors and influences while passing the torch to new generations. He’s recently performed concerts paying homage to the late Geri Allen alongside drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and a celebration of the centennial of Thelonious Monk at Duke University\, along with curating concert series at Philly’s South and New York’s Smoke. As an educator he directed the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Jazz Standards and taught at Connecticut’s Litchfield Jazz Camp.

SUMMARY:Two Tons of Steel at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts welcomes Americana pioneers and legends Two Tons of Steel to The Green Room. \n\nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore there was Americana\, before there was Texas Country\, Two Tons of Steel rocked a sound that blended the best of musical worlds and pushed the envelope with a signature brand of country punk. \nThe San Antonio-based group packed the small bars and local hangouts and quickly became the Alamo City’s most-loved band\, earning them a spot on the cover of Billboard Magazine in 1996. It was the beginning of a twenty year journey for the 4-piece ensemble. \nReleasing “Two Tons Of Steel” in 1994 and “Crazy For My Baby” in 1995 on Blue Fire Records\, a sponsorship deal with Lone Star Beer quickly followed. In 1996\, the band began traveling outside of Texas\, including stops at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville\, the National Theater in Havana\, Cuba\, and European tours to greet fans who had embraced their Texas-born sound. \nTwo Tons of Steel continues as an institution at Texas’ Gruene Hall\, where its annual Two Ton Tuesdays summer series draws 12\,000 fans and as a popular act at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. They have been repeatedly voted “Best Country Band” by the San Antonio Current\, one of its hometown weeklies.

SUMMARY:Grace Askew at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Green Room for a performance by Memphis musician Grace Askew\, celebrating her first full-length album release in five years. \nThe 12-song culmination of writing and performing a new song every day for over 500 days straight\, Denim & Diesel is a raw and vulnerable collection of stories about the struggles of daily life. The album was self-produced and recorded at Grace’s home — a.k.a “Tumbleweed Ranch\,” a creaky\, old\, tin-roofed ranch house on 100 acres in Eads\, TN\, and features two co-writes with Mike Doughty (of ’90s cult band “Soul Coughing). \nJana Jana\, one of Memphis’ hottest\, new female-led bands\, is fronted by Jana Misener (founding member of Memphis Dawls and Giant Bear). With live cello loops and soaring vocals\, Jana Jana’s soul-inspired indie rock is an orchestrated tempest. \n$25 presale | $30 night of show\nDoors at 6:30 pm | show at 7 pm \nAbout Grace Askew:\nGrace Askew is a sixth-generation Memphian and a highway child. With seven studio albums\, two international songwriting competitions\, gold medals\, multiple appearances on NBC’s The Voice\, and over a decade of touring under her belt\, Grace has established herself as a relentlessly creative artist and a powerhouse of talent. Growing up to the humming lullaby of the nearby interstate\, she fell asleep imagining all the places she would travel one day. \n

SUMMARY:The PRVLG at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Green Room for a performance by The PRVLG\, a musical twin duo from Memphis. This is a benefit concert for their mother who has Multiple Sclerosis. All funds raised will be donated towards her treatment \n\n\nTickets: $10\n\nDoors at 7pm | Performance 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA privilege is considered a rare opportunity\, which is exactly why The PRVLG fits this dynamic duo so effortlessly. Their act brings the rhythm section to the forefront of the stage unlike any other band around. \nThe duo\, consisting of twin brothers Christian and Christopher Underwood\, grew up surrounded by music. The brothers developed a very unique musical connection\, which is on full display in their live performances. As bass and drum players\, the pair have the ability to lock in a powerful rhythm and bass foundation\, effortlessly making up for each other’s shortcomings and complementing one another’s strengths. \nGrowing up in a musical family and listening to their father – a guitarist – play classics by the likes of Jimi Hendrix\, The Isley Brothers\, and Earth Wind & Fire\, it was only natural for them to begin writing together at the age of 16 and continue to develop their writing talent from then. Since officially forming in early 2017\, the duo named themselves The PRVLG\, chosen due to the privilege they experienced by growing up playing music together and connecting with others through the universal language. \n

SUMMARY:Austin Lucas at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Austin Lucas returns to Memphis for a performance at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts with his band\, The Bold Party\, on their fall US tour. \n\nTickets: $10\n\nDoors 7:00pm | Performance 7:30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Sometimes an artist just has a voice that’s so true and so clearly coming directly from the soul that you just can’t argue with it\, and Austin Lucas is one of those guys.” – BBC Radio \nIt’s been over two decades since the songwriter packed his bags and left Bloomington\, Indiana\, the Midwestern town where he spent his childhood years falling in love with rock & roll\, embracing his punk roots\, and standing his ground whenever intolerant locals didn’t understand his way of life. He returns to that place – both creatively and physically – with his seventh studio album\, Immortal Americans. Written after a tumultuous period that found Lucas getting sober\, supporting his partner through a battle with cancer\, and breaking up with his longtime record label\, Immortal Americans is a clear-eyed album for murkier times\, rooted in stripped-down heartland rock songs that find the artist reflecting upon the changes in both his hometown and himself. \nCo-produced by Lucas and Will Johnson (Centro-matic)\, recorded/engineered by Steve Albini\, and captured in a series of live\, full-band performances\, Immortal Americans was written after Lucas resettled in Bloomington. He’d been away for years\, touring the world as an independent solo artist before signing a record deal with New West in 2013. In many ways\, the albums he released during that period were reflections of the music he’d grown up with\, from the mountain music of his father (bluegrass musician Bob Lucas) to the punk records that soundtracked his teenage years. Appropriately\, Lucas earned a fanbase as a folksinger with punk roots – or was it the other way around? – while touring the country with artists who represented both ends of that spectrum\, sharing shows with Willie Nelson one minute and Chuck Ragan the next. \n\n \n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Rob Jungklas at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Rob Jungklas performs new songs from his forthcoming project\, Gone To Water. Opening act: Jana Misener. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nAbout Rob Jungklas:\nRob Jungklas came roaring back into the Memphis music psyche with 3 new critically acclaimed recordings in a few short years: Arkadelphia\, Gully\, and Mapping The Wreckage. Ever prolific\, he has released four more since his reemergence. The Spirit and The Spine\, Nothing To Fade\, and Blackbirds on Madjack Records\, and 7 Sisters. \nHe issued his debut LP\, Closer to the Flame\, in 1987 on Manhattan Records. On the strength of an MTV video aired for the single “Boys Town\,” the record garnered airplay and modest chart success for his effort\, while creating the iconic regional anthem “Memphis Thing.” \nThe more reflective Work Songs for a New Moon\, that followed two years later on RCA\, showcased Jungklas’ nuanced blend of pop songwriting and Memphis style R&B. \nLee Froelich calls Rob’s songs “profane and poetic\, haunted by ghost and damnation” and the sentiments are echoed by the likes of Rolling Stones’ David Fricke who describes the sounds as “bloodied bottleneck guitar and choked prayer.”

SUMMARY:Joe Restivo at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for an album release concert with Memphis’ own Joe Restivo\, a member of the Bo-Keys. \n“One of the city’s truly special Memphis music experiences.” – Bob Mehr\, Memphis Commercial Appeal \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7:30 pm | show at 8 pm \n\nAbout Joe Restivo:\nMemphis’ Joe Restivo – member of beloved soul band the Bo-Keys – will release ‘Where’s Joe?\,’ his debut album\, July 12 on Blue Barrel Records (the non-profit label arm of Archer Records). The album crystalizes his interest in Memphis jazz music made at the intersection of jump blues\, rhythm & blues\, and jazz. This is swinging\, fun music\, jazz for hipster cocktail parties\, which Restivo has been refining with his weekly residency at Lafeyette’s over four years. \nRestivo began playing clubs in the transitional period of the 1990s\, when the blues\, jazz\, and rhythm & blues masters could still be found on Beale Street and elsewhere in Memphis. Restivo would play regularly with organ master Charlie Wood and piano great Mose Vinson and would see Newborn play every week. “He had that bebop element but it was also kind of dangerous and had a rock and roll thing\, too. It wasn’t purely serious. But he was also playing sophisticated music\,” remembers Restivo\, recalling that he also used to see old-school\, jazz-based Beale Street players like saxophonists Fats Sonny and Fred Ford\, organist Honeymoon Gardner\, and trumpet player Noki Taylor\, play live frequently. “You don’t hear anyone make the guitar growl a little bit in jazz. These sounds from that era are brackish water. Is Tiny Grimes a rock and roll artist or is he a jazz artist or is he jump blues?\,” he asks\, rhetorically. Taking these influences and making them his own\, Restivo’s masterful guitar work also recalls national greats such as Oscar Moore (Nat King Cole)\, Loman Pauling (The 5 Royales)\, Tal Farlow\, and Hank Garland. \nYet the album is no revival\, mostly fueled by original compositions. Take\, for example\, the film noir-inspired “Last Starlight Motel” or the ballad “Thelma.” He recalls\, “’Thelma’ I named after my grandmother because it reminded me of being in her kitchen\, with her smoking cigarettes.” Even the covers are done in a new style. Restivo adds\, “We played Bill Jennings and Tiny Grimes but we found our own way with them.” The standard “House of the Rising Sun” shows up in 3:4 time. Then there’s the raunchy Memphis instrumental bonus track\, which recalls music from Sun Studio. \nRestivo calls upon bassist Tim Goodwin and drummer Tom Lonardo\, a Memphis rhythm section that’s worked together and apart for over forty years\, playing behind every major touring jazz artist. Lonardo is recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Memphis Musical Heritage Foundation and has worked with who’s who\, such as Mose Allison\, the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Bo Diddley\, The Charlie Wood Trio\, Jim Dickinson\, and Calvin Newborn. Art Edmaiston\, a veteran of Gregg Allman and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s bands\, adds his saxophone. \nWith the Bo-Keys\, Restivo has performed in venues and festivals all over the world including Lincoln Center\, London’s O2 Stadium\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, as well as shared stages with luminaries in soul\, jazz and blues including Syl Johnson\, Newborn\, Bobby Rush\, and Carla Thomas. A graduate of the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at New School University in NYC\, Restivo has also played with rising soul singer Robert Finley. He spins Memphis jazz as a DJ on his weekly radio show on WEVL. \nRestivo plays a late 1940s Epiphone Zephyr Deluxe. “I don’t have any proof but this guitar was supposedly played by a guy who played with Bob Wills\,” says Restivo with a smile\, though he later found some evidence online to support the claim. \n‘Where’s Joe?’ was recorded at Archer Record’s Music+Arts Studio in Memphis\, TN to analog tape with no overdubs.

SUMMARY:Choro das 3
DESCRIPTION:Choro das 3 — the “First Family of Choro” — returns to Memphis on their 7th U.S. tour for an unforgettable evening of joy\, excitement\, and megachops in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \nBrazilian choro music is a living gem — the “roots music” of that country and the mother of the samba and bossa nova we love. In choro\, the flavors of immigrant mazurkas\, polkas\, and waltzes are seasoned with smoky tango and simmered in an irresistible Afro-Brazilian groove. From Heitor Villa-Lobos to Darius Milhaud to Stan Getz to Walt Disney\, choro has inspired artists of all stripes and is a window into an entire musical world. Catchy and melodic – easy to appreciate – yet bursting with kaleidoscopic virtuosity that fascinates the listener\, choro has been well-described as “classical music played with bare feet and callused hands.” \n\nAbout Choro das 3:\nA Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father\, Choro das 3 began to play as a band in 2002. Flutist Corina doubles on piccolo\, trading lead and counterpoint roles with Elisa on bandolim (Brazilian mandolin)\, tenor banjo\, clarinet\, and accordion; Elisa also writes and performs at the piano. Lia anchors the harmony and provides the bass lines so essential to choro with the violão de sete cordas (7-string guitar). Their father\, Eduardo\, supplies the rhythmic heartbeat with the pandeiro (Brazilian frame drum). \nChoro das 3 shares a tradition that’s over 100 years old\, one that continues to attract new composers\, musicians\, and audiences. The group has received accolades all over Brazil and abroad for virtuosity and creative energy\, and has played a significant role in the preservation\, renovation\, and modernization of Choro. \n\nAbout West Tennessee Choro:\nThis concert is a collaboration between Crosstown Arts and West Tennessee Choro\, a non-profit corporation based in the Memphis area created to share the popular instrumental musical styles of Brazil with music lovers of all ages through education\, participation\, and presentation.

SUMMARY:Songwriters in the Round feat. D'Monet\, Jeremy Stanfill\, and Lisa Mac
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for Songwriters in the Round\, featuring D’Monet\, Jeremy Stanfill\, and Lisa Mac. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nAbout the musicians:\nNurturing her vocal gifts from the tender age of four\, along with developing her ear for the piano by 7\, D’Monet now is a seasoned veteran. D’Monet has shared her soul from New York to Los Angeles\, but it’s only natural she makes Memphis\, Tennessee the home of her “Futuristic Soul.” \nJeremy Stanfill is a born and bred Memphian with music in his bones. When he’s not drumming for Star & Micey\, Jeremy writes and sings shootin’ the moon-style Americana songs of heartbreaking honesty that evoke that difficult space where the sadness of wandering lost is the same feeling as the joy of freedom. \nLisa Mac was born and raised in Memphis.
