She’s the little sister to living legend and musical genius\, Jerry Lee Lewis. Raised on rock and roll-pumping piano and country\, Linda Gail grew up with a passion for music. A professional musician since fifteen\, she continues to tour sharing her high octane live show with music fans around the world. \nRobbie Fulks is a singer\, recording artist\, instrumentalist\, composer\, and songwriter. His most recent release\, 2017’s Upland Stories\, earned year’s-best recognition from NPR and Rolling Stone among many others\, as well as two Grammy® nominations\, for folk album and American roots song (“Alabama At Night”). \nIn 1983\, he moved to Chicago and joined Greg Cahill’s Special Consensus Bluegrass Band. He taught music at Old Town School of Folk Music from 1984 to 1996\, and worked as a staff songwriter on Music Row in Nashville from 1993 to 1998. His early solo work — Country Love Songs (1996) and South Mouth (1997) — helped define the “alternative country” movement of the 1990s. \nRadio: multiple appearances on WSM’s “Grand Ole Opry”; PRI’s “Whadd’ya Know”; NPR’s “Fresh Air\,” “Mountain Stage\,” and “World Cafe”; and the syndicated “Acoustic Cafe” and “Laura Ingraham Show.” TV: PBS’s Austin City Limits; NBC’s Today\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, Later with Carson Daly\, and 30 Rock. From 2004 to 2008 he hosted an hourlong performance/interview program for XM satellite radio\, “Robbie’s Secret Country.” Artists who have covered his songs include Sam Bush\, Kelly Hogan\, Andrew Bird\, Mollie O’Brien\, Rosie Flores\, John Cowan\, and Old 97s. \nRobbie’s writing on music and life have appeared in GQ\, Blender\, the Chicago Reader\, DaCapo Press’s Best Music Writing anthologies for 2001 and 2004\, Amplified: Fiction from Leading Alt-Country\, Indie Rock\, Blues and Folk Musicians\, and A Guitar and A Pen: Stories by Country Music’s Greatest Songwriters. As an instrumentalist\, he has accompanied the Irish fiddle master Liz Carroll\, the distinguished jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman\, and the New Orleans pianist Dr. John. As a producer his credits include Touch My Heart: A Tribute to Johnny Paycheck (Sugar Hill\, 2004) and Big Thinkin’ by Dallas Wayne (Hightone\, 2000). Theatrical credits include “Woody Guthrie’s American Song” and Harry Chapin’s “Cottonpatch Gospel.” He served twice as judge for the Winfield National Flatpicking Guitar competition. He tours yearlong with various configurations.

King and Herman ”Junior” Parker. The band of seasoned Memphis musicians derives their name from Bland’s 1961 hit “Turn On Your Love Light.” Their sound is completed with the soulful voice of bluesman John Nemeth. \nIn addition to dipping into the catalogs of Buddy Ace\, Freddie King\, and Percy Mayfield\, the band demonstrates their deftness with uptown blues via the solid originals “Singing For My Supper\, “Lonesome and High\,” and the Ray Charles-inspired opener “See Why I Love You.” Casual fans of Memphis music might only recognize their cover of Al Green’s iconic “Love and Happiness\,” but it’s reset here as a shuffle\, building upon riffs that horn player\, Marc Franklin\, says were inspired by Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus.” \nThe Love Light Orchestra’s overall sound\, says Franklin\, was inspired by Joe Scott whose work Franklin discovered after he was hired to play with Bland in the early ‘90s. “The first time I heard his work\, it sounded like Ellington\, but more down-home with extended harmonics that you don’t necessarily hear on blues or soul records. It’s a jazz thing\, throwing extra notes into the chords—at Stax they didn’t do 6th chords.” \nGrammy-winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang cut the record live at the tiny DKDC bar in Memphis\, and recalls “it was more or less done after we cut it. Princess explores queerness and the concept of masculinity. Simultaneously gay\, straight\, queer\, masculine\, and feminine\, Princess embodies the fluidity and coherence between the seemingly contradictory. Princess was formed in 2004 in the Chicago DIY Performance space Texas Ballroom. The duo released a self-titled LP and performed until 2006 when they went on to pursue other paths\, reuniting for this project in 2017. \n

First inspired to play guitar after hearing a fellow college student playing in a stairwell\, Wilcox is now 18 records into a career marked by personal revelation and wildly loyal fans. His lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice\, virtuosic guitar chops\, and creative open tunings\, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music. \nDavid was the first artist Folk All Y’all reached out to host\, way back in 2014. After that first (more-than-)sold-out show\, David’s come back and played five more times and become the artist we consider our patron saint. We’re thrilled to welcome David to our first concert at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\, a space that has inspired him for years and represents the community he’s built with us in Memphis. \nAbout Folk All Y’all: Our mission is to present world-class singer-songwriters in an intimate\, attentive environment. DESCRIPTION:Jazz bassist\, composer\, and educator Bob Bowman performs at The Green Room with Michael Shults\, Pat Coil\, and Danny Gottlieb. \nFeaturing Bob Bowan (bass)\, Michael Shults (saxophone)\, Pat Coil (piano)\, and Danny Gottlieb (drums). \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \n\nAbout Bob Bowman:\nBob Bowman\, a native Kansan\, learned to play the piano and clarinet before beginning to play bass at age 12. He won a scholarship to the Stan Kenton Jazz Clinic as a high school freshman\, followed by study at North Texas State University. \nIn 1976\, he joined the famous Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra\, touring and recording several albums\, including the Grammy award-winning “Live in Munich.” Bob continued his performing and recording career by joining the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabakin Big Band in Los Angeles in 1979. He recorded numerous albums as a member of this band\, many of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. Bob also had long musical relationships with pianists\, composers and arrangers Dan Haerle and Frank Mantooth. \nBob has toured and recorded with many artists including the legendary Carmen McRae\, Pat Coil\, Freddie Hubbard\, Bud Shank\, Karrin Allyson\, Steve Houghton\, Steve Allee\, Bill Mays\, Clay Jenkins\, Danny Embrey\, Todd Strait\, Bob Sheppard\, Matt Otto\, Rod Fleeman\, John Stowell\, Jerry Hahn\, Bobby Watson and others. Also he has had a very important musical relationship with Kansas City musicians like Tommy Ruskin\, Paul Smith\, Mike Ning\, Claude “Fiddler” Williams\, Jay McShann\, Stan Kessler\, and many more. Bob moved to Kansas City in 1988 where he has been a major part of the vibrant jazz scene there. He was a faculty member of the University of Missouri as well as Ottawa University and leads legendary Kansas City group INTERSTRING and various version of Bowdog.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by blues guitarist and singer-songwriter Scott Sherrard and Memphis-based soul band\, The Bo-Keys. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7:30 pm | Show at 8 pm \n“One of the best guitarists in the country.” — Billboard Magazine \nScott Sharrard is best-known as lead guitarist and bandleader for the late Gregg Allman. But his personal artistic journey – which includes singing\, songwriting\, producing\, and arranging – began long before he first teamed up with the rock icon. \n“Gregg had a pure passion and heart\,” Sharrard says of his friend\, “especially when it came to being a musician. That authenticity and dedication is a daily inspiration\, and I will always carry that with me onstage and in the studio.” \nHis latest record\,“Saving Grace\,” with the blues at its core\, bears a distinctly southern spirit. Sessions took place in Memphis and at the historic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama. Half the album employs the Hi Rhythm Section\, the other The Swampers of Muscle Shoals. \nThe partnership with Allman ended with the 69-year-old’s death on May 27\, 2017. But not before Allman covered Sharrard’s “Love Like Kerosene” on 2015’s “Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon\, GA\,” and again on Allman’s eighth and final solo album\, the posthumous\, GRAMMY-nominated “Southern Blood” (Rounder Records\, 2017). \nAnother “Southern Blood” track\, the unforgettable farewell “My Only True Friend” – co-written by Sharrard and Allman – earned a GRAMMY nomination for Americana Song of the Year. \nHe’s now begun a new chapter with an album he consciously wanted to summarize the last 20 years of his work – and one that showcases the totality of his artistry: as guitarist\, singer\, songwriter\, producer\, arranger and bandleader. \nIn short\, he says\, it’s rock n’ roll rooted in everything else. \n“I basically have a rock ’n’ roll band\,” Sharrard explains. “When I was growing up\, I loved bands like Little Feat\, Led Zeppelin and the Allmans. They would explore so many styles and experiment. That’s something I have always tried to embrace\, and that’s how I want to present my music today. This is what I tried to do with Gregg. Now I’m continuing that as a solo artist.”

DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by Los Angeles-based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer Odeya Nini.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvolving over the last eight years\, A Solo Voice\, composed and performed by Odeya Nini\, is an investigation of resonance\, extended vocal techniques\, performance\, and pure expression\, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations that include field recordings and theatrical elements\, aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action. In a multi-dimensionality that serves to both provoke and soothe in abstract communication\, the voice is presented in its spectrum of natures as it travels through cultures\, ages\, emotions and colors\, like photographs\, with tender intimacy and bold aberrance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7 pm |Performance 7:30pm \nOdeya Nini is a Los Angeles-based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer. Shortly after moving back to Memphis in 1990\, she began fronting rock-soul band The Mother Station and was signed to a record deal with EastWest / Atlantic Records. In 1994 they released their debut album “Brand New Bag” which peeked at #34 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock charts. \nSince then\, Susan’s released three critically praised solo albums — “Susan Marshall Is Honey Mouth\,” “Firefly\,” and “Little Red.” She has performed with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, Memphis Jazz Orchestra\, and is also known for her solo and duo performances in residency at Itta Bena. \nSusan has toured all over the world as part of the Afghan Whigs as well as with Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band\, which included appearances on Austin City Limits\, The Late Show w/David Letterman\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, and the BBC’s “Later … with Jools Holland.” \nSusan is also known for her studio and/or stage work with a wide range of superstars; Lucinda Williams\, Keith Richards\, Norah Jones\, Lenny Kravitz\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Ann Peebles\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Alvin Youngblood Hart\, Solomon Burke\, Jim Lauderdale\, Steve Earle\, and Kirk Whalum to name a few. In the studio she has worked alongside legendary producers Tom Dowd\, Chips Moman\, Willie Mitchell\, Jim Dickinson\, Joe Hardy\, John Hampton\, and husband Jeff Powell. Also featuring members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra —  Jessie Munson\, Yennifer Correia\, Beth Luscombe\, and Jonathan Kirkscey. \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nThose Pretty Wrongs are Jody Stephens and Luther Russell. It’s a musical partnership borne of a deep and lasting friendship\, the roots of which stretch back to the early ’90s\, when the two were introduced. As the story goes\, nary a note of music was made between them until about five years ago\, when they were united in the cause of a documentary about Jody’s alma mater\, the legendary Memphis group Big Star. After releasing their self-titled debut on Ardent/Burger in 2016 to a healthy dose of acclaim\, they went out on the road\, playing for audiences across North America\, Australia\, Europe\, and the U.K. \nDuring the course of these runs\, they began to forge the sound for their second offering\, Zed for Zulu\, due out September 6\, 2019 on Burger Records\, a meditation on communication or lack thereof\, the ever-present past or the question of the future\, inevitable death\, or imminent re-birth. The music is colorful but muted\, something complex woven in a simple way. It’s a symphony of chords and melodies\, yet played in an understated fashion\, without too much fuss. Those Pretty Wrongs don’t have time to fuss\, as Luther dwells in Los Angeles and Jody resides in Memphis. And they like it that way.

Katherine Hedlund was becoming quite the fixture and turning heads in Memphis before she departed for San Francisco in 2018\, and we are thrilled to be hosting her in a rare return appearance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance 7:30 pm \n\n                 \n\n\n    \n  \n\nKatharine Hedlund is a jazz/soul pianist and vocalist with a musicality far beyond her years. Katharine grew up in Darien\, CT\, and began her professional performing career at 13 years old\, playing original renditions of jazz standards with her trio in local clubs around the New York metro area. Her performances frequently invite comparison to Diana Krall and Norah Jones – but with quite a bit more sass than either of the former! \nKatharine attended Northwestern University in Chicago\, IL \,to continue musical studies with the renowned saxophonist of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Victor Goines\, and soulful Grammy-winning pianist for vocalist Diane Reeves\, Peter Martin. She was awarded the highly competitive piano chair of the school’s premier touring graduate small ensemble as an undergraduate. \nShe has performed in some of Jazz’s most prestigious venues\, including The Green Mill Chicago\, The Jazz Showcase Chicago\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola of Jazz at Lincoln Center NYC\, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, Germantown Performing Arts Center\, The Sound Room (Oakland\, CA)\, among others. \nKatharine relocated to Memphis after graduation from Northwestern and began performing weekly at the historic Peabody Hotel and the Zebra Lounge in Overton Square\, honing her skills in voice and piano in soul\, blues\, and pop styles. Katharine has since moved to San Francisco\, but Memphis will always be her musical home.

A native of Memphis\, Tennessee\, Alisa has performed as soloist with orchestra playing pieces by Miaskovsky\, Bloch\, Dvorak\, Bruch\, and Elgar. She was a winner of the WAMSO-Young Artist Solo Competition and a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony. Alisa has attended many music festivals\, including Aspen Music Festival\, Boston University Tanglewood Institute\, Meadowmount\, Sewanee Summer Music Center\, Henry Mancini Institute\, Newport Jazz Festival (Rhode Island) \, and Newport Jazz Festival (Oregon). With pianist\, Jue He\, Alisa recorded the Rachmaninoff and Miaskovsky Sonatas and the duo was featured on McGraw-Hill Young Artist Showcase. \nAlong with jazz legends Marvin Stamm and Bill Mays\, Alisa is a member of The Inventions Trio\, which performs a fusion of jazz and classical repertoire. The Trio has toured extensively and has released three albums including the diverse works of Bill Evans\, Bill Mays\, Heitor Villa-Lobos\, Claude Debussy\, and Miles Davis. \nOn Broadway\, Alisa has played in many shows including the 2017 revival of Sunday in the Park with George\, An American in Paris\, If/Then\, Dogfight\, Venice\, Little Miss Sunshine\, Carrie\, and Next to Normal. Alisa performs with Broadway singer\, Mary Testa\, and Broadway orchestrator\, Michael Starobin\, who released their album “Have Faith” in 2015. She has played with many singer/songwriters and pop artists/bands such as John Legend\, Devotchka\, Rod Stewart\, The Roots\, and Phish. \nMaeve Brophy gave her first solo piano recital at age 9 and made her orchestral debut at 15. She has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells\, England; the Amalfi Coast; Kiev\, Ukraine; New York; San Francisco; Seattle; Aspen; Nashville; and Memphis. She has performed for the Memphis Chamber Music Society and the Artist Ascending Series in Memphis and is a regular performer with the Luna Nova Ensemble. Maeve has performed as soloist with the Chernygev Symphony in Kiev as well as the Paducah Symphony and the Central Florida Philharmonic. She has a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University. She also studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the New England Conservatory of Music with Russell Sherman. She has worked as a freelance accompanist in Memphis and played for numerous student recitals at the University of Memphis. She has taught students privately as well as at the Boston College of Adult Education. She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher.

The series provides the Memphis community the opportunity to get to know and learn more about the talented musicians that make up the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Each month will feature a different musician or small chamber group as soloist or featured ensemble. \n\nAbout the artists:\nGreg Luscombe has served as the principal trombonist with the Memphis Symphony since 1989. He also served as the Orchestra Personnel Manager for two seasons. Since August of 2008\, Mr. Luscombe is also Professor of Low Brass at the University of Mississippi. Mr. Luscombe has been a featured soloist on various subscription concerts with the Memphis Symphony. He recently performed in recital at Henderson State University\, University of Northern Alabama\, and at the University of Tennessee (Martin). Last season\, he performed the David Concertino with the Dyersburg (TN) Community Orchestra. This season\, he will be performing the Grondahl Concerto with the Germantown Symphony Orchestra in April. Mr. Luscombe has also performed and recorded with the Chicago Symphony\, the Cleveland Orchestra\, the St. Louis Symphony and the Mexico City Philharmonic. He has also done a variety of commercial work including theatre engagements and recordings. He also performs professionally on euphonium and bass trumpet. Mr. Luscombe was recently invited to perform as a guest artist on a recital series at the Eastern Trombone Workshop (ETW-2011) held annually in Fort Meyer\, Maryland – one of the largest events for trombone in the world. Mr. Luscombe is married to Beth Luscombe\, a member of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra viola section. \nIn addition to private piano instruction at Rhodes College\, Brian Ray is the departmental collaborative pianist and also teaches piano classes at the University of Memphis. He has been a soloist with the University of Memphis Orchestra and the Memphis Civic Orchestra and has performed extensively as an assisting pianist in voice recitals. His most recent collaborative ventures have included art song recitals of works by Richard Hundley\, Samuel Barber\, Libby Larsen\, and Rebecca Clarke. He has been a student of Allison Nelson and Joan Gilbert. His areas of research include the piano works of Joseph Marx\, piano repertoire of the 20th century\, works for piano ensemble\, and harpsichord.

He made 40 predominately B-movies for the Nikkatsu Company between 1956 and 1967\, working most prolifically in the yakuza genre. His increasingly surreal style began to draw the ire of the studio in 1963 and culminated in his ultimate dismissal for what is now regarded as his magnum opus\, Branded to Kill (1967). \n

That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. \nAs a daring pianist\, Evans combines raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance into a sound wholly his own. As an adventurous composer he traverses stylistic boundaries with abandon\, drawing on full-throttle swing\, deep-rooted blues\, expressive soul\, or bracing excursions into the avant-garde. As an audacious bandleader\, he delights in daring fellow musicians to take bold risks\, whether in mutable small group settings or his raucous Captain Black Big Band. It was the beginning of a twenty year journey for the 4-piece ensemble. \nReleasing “Two Tons Of Steel” in 1994 and “Crazy For My Baby” in 1995 on Blue Fire Records\, a sponsorship deal with Lone Star Beer quickly followed. In 1996\, the band began traveling outside of Texas\, including stops at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville\, the National Theater in Havana\, Cuba\, and European tours to greet fans who had embraced their Texas-born sound. \nTwo Tons of Steel continues as an institution at Texas’ Gruene Hall\, where its annual Two Ton Tuesdays summer series draws 12\,000 fans and as a popular act at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by Michael Shults Quintet featuring Clint Ashlock. \nKansas City transplant and current professor of saxophone at the University of Memphis Michael Shults joins forces with one of the central figures of the Kansas City scene – trumpeter and composer Clint Ashlock – and a rhythm section of Memphis stalwarts\, presenting original music and standards. With Alvie Givhan\, piano\, Alan Maguire\, bass\, and James Sexton\, drums. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nAbout Clint Ashlock:\nTrumpeter/composer/bandleader Clint Ashlock grew up in the Kansas City area. A dedicated and tireless contributor to the scene\, Clint has performed with such luminaries as Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Nicholas Payton and Natalie Cole\, as well as being a mainstay on the local KC circuit\, most notably as Artistic Director of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra\, leader of his own groups of varying size and genre\, and as a member of ensembles such as The Project H and The Marcus Lewis Big Band. Ashlock has produced a number of recordings\, including the latest KCJO album “Rhapsody\,” which includes a 30-minute tour-de-force arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue\,” “New Jazz Order” featuring Bobby Watson\, and with Denver pianist Ben Markley\, entitled “The Return.” As a trumpeter\, Ashlock reflects the lineage of his hard bop idols such as Lee Morgan\, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw\, and his big band writing is heavily influenced by Duke Ellington\, Thad Jones\, Kerry Strayer and Dan Gailey. Ashlock has been featured as a soloist at the First Jazz Education Festival in Shanghai\, China\, and at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Sydney\, Australia\, as a clinician across the country\, and currently needs to stop buying so many shoes. \nAbout Michael Shults:\nSaxophonist Michael Shults has been praised for his “strong\, imaginative” improvisations (Downbeat Magazine) and “fresh and intelligent musical ideas” (The Pitch). A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City and beyond\, and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. As a graduate student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, Michael was a finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. He has performed by invitation as a featured soloist at the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference\, the Jazz Education Network conference\, the Wisconsin Music Educator’s Association conference\, the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association conference\, and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. \nMichael is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis. Prior to Memphis\, he taught for four years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He is a Yamaha and D’Addario performing artist and performs on their instruments and reeds exclusively.
