Nick later moved to Nashville\, where he released a pair of acclaimed albums before heading west to Austin. Even so\, that childhood soundtrack — a blend of roots\, rhythm\, and raw melody — always felt like home. \nMidway\, Pagliari’s third record — and first in over a decade — finds him revisiting the sounds that helped shape his love for music. Fueled by sharp songwriting\, blasts of brass\, swirling organ\, and rootsy arrangements\, it’s an Americana album that focuses on Memphis soul rather than Nashville twang. \nInfluenced by icons like Tom Petty\, Van Morrison\, and the Band\, his songs have always packed a direct punch\, rooted in the fuss-free appeal of his voice and folksy songwriting. Those same ingredients ground Midway\, but so does Pagliari’s broadened perspective. A guitar player\, sure — armed from the get-go with the dead-aim chops and cool-handed confidence of a natural-born gunslinger. Later on\, he took on the mantle of producer too\, parlaying his myriad strengths as an ace sideman into an equally lauded career helping a veritable who’s who of the most formidable poets in Americana find their “growl” and cut their deepest grooves on record. But songwriter? That handle took him a bit longer to fully embrace. \nNevermind the fact that his perspective on the matter was inevitably skewed by his years of working with such grading-curve-blowing talents as Blaze Foley\, Lucinda Williams\, Butch Hancock\, Robert Earl Keen\, Mary Gauthier\, and Ray Wylie Hubbard: a high bar is a high bar\, and Morlix\, for all of his famed minimalist aesthetic both onstage and in the studio\, has never been one to cut corners when it comes to quality. \nThrough the years\, Morlix also produced such artists as Lucinda Williams\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, Tom Russell\, Butch Hancock\, Ian “Mac” McLagan\, Slaid Cleaves\, Michael Penn\, the Pinedogs\, and the Setters. His numerous recording credits include works by Jerry Lee Lewis\, Buddy Miller\, Peter Case\, Bob Neuwirth\, Trish Murphy\, Marvin Etzioni\, Andrew Hardin\, Jim Lauderdale\, Don Walser\, Michael Penn\, Linda McRae\, Danny Tate\, and Mojo Nixon\, among others.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Coalescent Quartet in a special performance in The Green Room. The program will feature varied works from composers Edvard Grieg\, Fernande DeCruck\, Zack Browning\, and Memphis-based Dr. Evan Williams from the faculty of Rhodes College. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \nFormed in 2016\, the Coalescent Quartet explores the diverse saxophone quartet repertoire from traditional to contemporary works. Its members Nathan Bogert\, Michael Shults\, Nick Zoulek\, and Drew Whiting bring together years of combined chamber music experience and disparate pedagogical backgrounds to present sensitive\, exciting\, and distinctive performances. In addition to being active performers\, the Coalescent Quartet are dynamic educators. Its members have taught at Ball State University\, Silver Lake College\, the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire\, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh\, the University of Wisconsin Whitewater\, the University of Memphis\, and Oakland University. Collectively\, the quartet has presented master-classes across the country\, including at Kent State University and the Ohio State University. As champions of new saxophone quartet repertoire\, in its short lifespan the quartet has commissioned composers such as Ted King-Smith and Martin Bresnick\, and arranged music by Evan Ziporyn for saxophone.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists. \nThis series is in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. February’s performance features Canadian fingerstyle guitarist Calum Graham in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nAt only 26 years old\, Calum Graham has already enjoyed a career that would be the envy of most artists twice his age. He was recently named one of the World’s Top 30 Guitarists under 30 by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. His signature playing style has enthralled millions of listeners on YouTube and Spotify\, which has led to tours across America\, Europe\, and China. Calum plays both the acoustic and harp guitar in his live set\, and his original melodies are guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings. His music embraces elements of folk\, world\, and blues — all built upon the foundation of the fingerstyle technique. “The most promising young guitarist I’ve seen. His command of the guitar is already really impressive!” — Andy McKee \nBorn in British Columbia and raised in High River\, Alberta\, Graham’s musical journey first took flight when he began playing the guitar at the age of 13. Five years later in the summer of 2010\, Graham attended the Canadian Guitar Festival and entered the prestigious Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Competition. Impressed with his original compositions\, the judges awarded Graham with a first place finish; a feat no other teenager has accomplished in the history of the festival. The clip of his winning performance has now generated almost 1 million hits on YouTube. \nAs Calum Graham’s name continued to grow in Alberta and across Canada for his guitar work and musicianship\, Graham proved that his talent was not limited to his extraordinary ability to play the guitar. In 2011\, Graham won the Canada’s Walk of Fame nationwide “A Song For Canada” contest based on his poetic acuteness. DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a special performance by jazz group The Dopolarians. \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nThe Dopolarians is a collective of veteran avant-garde jazz musicians\, including some of the legends of the genre. With the exception of bassist William Parker\, the entire group hails from various points across the southern United States. The group formed in 2018 primarily around the friendship of pianist Chris Parker and influential percussionist Alvin Fielder to record their debut record\, Garden Party. Garden Party is accessible — even hummable — improvised music with ever-present reference to the group’s southern roots. As a Jazz Times magazine reviewer puts it\, the group performs “a perfect balance of euphoric improvisation\, bluesy mettle\, and melodic composition that’s as edgy as it is infectious.” \nTragically\, following the initial session that gave birth to the group\, Alvin Fielder fell ill and passed away. Filling the drum chair now is one of Alvin’s beloved students\, Chad Anderson of Mississippi. The Dopolarians performance will serve as both an album release celebration and a tribute to Alvin — friend\, mentor\, and giant among jazz percussionists. \nThe Dopoloarians are William Parker (bass)\, Douglas Ewart (tenor saxophone)\, Chris Parker (piano\, Kelley Hurt (voice)\, Chad Fowler (alto saxophone and saxello)\, Chad Anderson (percussion)\, and special guest Marc Franklin (trumpet).

Shawn Amos & The Brotherhood in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nSince 2018’s acclaimed\, politically charged “The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks It Down\,” The Rev has been on the road non-stop with The Brotherhood — a cohesive band of legit titans featuring drummer Brady Blade (Buddy & Julie Miller\, Dave Matthews\, Indigo Girls)\, bassist Christopher Thomas (Norah Jones\, Carly Simon\, Macy Gray)\, and the long-time Rev aide-de-camp/guitarist Chris “Doctor” Roberts. All are friends from a life in music who are now gathered on a singular mission. \n2019 also saw The Rev alighting in Texas\, where the South begins\, the West ends\, and something else is taking shape — a world away\, geographically and culturally\, from his native LA. It is in the hill country of Texas where the Rev and the Brotherhood convened for a new recording slated for a 2020 release. Blade\, Thomas\, and Roberts provide not only musical but also spiritual and emotional support for embracing new territory\, artistically and otherwise. \n“All I’m doing is singing and playing harp\,” the Rev says. “I couldn’t imagine making this music with people who are not friends.” \nPrior to emerging as the Reverend in 2013\, folks knew Shawn Amos as producer (Solomon Burke’s Live in Nashville\, and Shout! Factory box set Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones)\, content creator for companies looking for ways to tell their stories on the internet\, and Americana singer-songwriter who’d grown up in a dramatically dysfunctional L.A. home (a story the Rev serialized as Cookies & Milk in the Huffington Post). \nUnlike past Shawn Amos collaborations with Matthew Sweet and Solomon Burke\, the Brotherhood is in it for the long haul. “Everybody feels pride of ownership\,” the Rev says of Blue Sky. The band has already hit the road and will tour through 2020. \n“These songs are really special to Shawn\,” says Brady Blade\, who previously hosted the Rev’s debut album (produced by Mindi Abair) at his Shreveport studio\, and laid down drums. “It’s up to us whether we’re ready to jump in and contribute 150%. If we’re not\, it’s not a brotherhood.” \nClearly\, from the barn-burning blues stomp of “Counting Down the Days” to the smoky R & B of “Water” to the rollicking “27 Dollars\,” the Brotherhood is\, indeed\, down. \nThe material showcases Shawn Amos’ songwriting like no previous Rev outing; here furious\, there vulnerable; here gadabout and crazy\, there forlorn and tender; all buoyed by musicians emboldening a beloved family member. \n“When I first played blues\,” the Rev says\, “I had no interest in writing. I put up a firewall between the Rev and my Americana past.” He’s referring to his three Shawn Amos albums\, lauded singer-songwriter offerings featuring Ray Parker\, Jr.\, Solomon Burke\, and the Jayhawks’ Mark Olson. “But I slowly got the bug again. This is the first time I’ve had the space to try to be more of a singer-songwriter within the confines of the blues.” \nBrady Blade says\, “Brotherhood\, to me\, means togetherness\, being able to interact with each other in a more personal way because it’s not like\, ‘Oh\, he’s my boss. I’m just the side guy.’ The Brotherhood\, in this context with Shawn\, helps drive the music. Because the tension has to be there. Also\, the happiness has to be there. For all of us\, the happiness has definitely come out on this record.” \nHappiness due in part to a creative spirit fully immersed in the work\, able to access and manifest the nitty-gritty because his brothers have his back. “My whole artistic life has been a process of: How do I get all of me to show up?” the Rev says. “I fought hard to be here\, so I’m gonna make sure all of me shows up.”

She is a published songwriter\, vocalist\, guitarist\, backing vocalist\, bandleader\, and producer\, as well as a touring and recording artist. Reba Russell and her band tour throughout the United States and Europe and have released eight independent albums. \nShe is a highly respected Memphis studio/session vocalist\, but she is perhaps more popularly known as a powerful live performer. The list of credits for recording artists that Reba has performed backing vocals in session for is vast. A few notable credits are: U2 (When Love Comes to Town\, BB King/ Bono; Class of 55 Homecoming featuring Johnny Cash\, Roy Orbison\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, and Carl Perkins; and Huey Lewis and the News’ album Soulsville. Russell has also performed with local and regional acts\, including Tracy Nelson\, Jim Dickinson\, Sid Selvidge\, and Lucero. \nThe Memphis Chapter of NARAS awarded a Premier Player Award for vocals to Reba in both 1998 and 1999. She was also named an Emissary of Memphis Music by the Memphis Shelby County Music Commission in 2009. In 2011\, Reba Russell was nominated for the Koko Taylor Vocal Award by the Blues Foundation during their annual Blues Music Awards Show in Memphis. For over 35 years\, Reba Russell has performed in almost every venue\, studio\, and event around the Memphis area and continues to be a stalwart of the Memphis Music Scene. \nIn 2018\, The Reba Russell Band was honored with a brass note on Beale Street.

The Boston-based singer-songwriter returns to the Southern US in January 2020\, following his eighth tour of Europe and a sold-out show at City Winery. \nIn 2019\, Crosby made several pilgrimages to Memphis and Mississippi to meet some of the most celebrated bluesmen in the Delta\, including Bentonia blues legend Jimmy “Duck” Holmes and Duck Hill’s Willie Farmer. During this time\, Crosby also performed at the Bentonia Blues Festival and Clarksdale’s Juke Joint Festival and recorded an album with renowned producer Bruce Watson at his Memphis studio. An accomplished guitarist himself\, Crosby will perform on 12-string and lap style guitars\, backed by Memphis’ own George Sluppick on drums and Boston’s Grant Smith on calabash. January’s performance features Italian virtuoso guitarist Alberto Lombardi in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $15\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nItalian virtuoso guitarist Alberto Lombardi is an internationally renowned acoustic solo fingerstyle and electric rock player. His captivating acoustic performances are comprised of elaborate arrangements of great classics both of the Italian and international tradition\, incorporating fingerpicking\, flatpicking\, some looping and singing\, but also original songs and compositions. \nHe toured extensively in Europe and USA\, playing major guitar festivals like Muriel Anderson’s All Star gui/tar Night\, Peter Finger’s International Guitar Night\, Chet Atkins Appreciation Society\, Sarzana and also in clubs like NYC Rockwood music hall and Nashville’s City Winery. \nIncluded among the eight guitarists to watch in 2018 by Vintage Guitar Magazine and among the best ten emerging fingerstyle guitarists in the world by Guitar Masters Poland\, Alberto is a Taylor Guitars and B&G guitars supported artist. \nHis arrangement of “Volare” gained Stefan Grossman’s attention\, resulting in Grossman releasing an instructional video of Alberto’s work. Alberto then went on to release multiple albums and instructional videos for Stefan Grossman and Peter Finger. His records have received many great reviews\, first of all from the master himself Tommy Emmanuel (“It sounds beautiful \,and your playing and arrangements are very powerful! Big admiration to you!”)\, but also from renowned magazines such as Acoustic Guitar\, Fingerstyle Journal\, Vintage guitar\, Minor 7th\, Chitarra acustica. \nAs an electric soloist\, Alberto has rocked stages as big as Italian Stadiums like Olimpico and San Siro\, or Pavillao Atlantico in Lisboa. He’s now touring with the Alberto Lombardi Stratocaster tribute\, interpreting all the great music performed on the Strat by legends like Clapton\, Hendrix\, Gilmour\, SRV\, etc. \nHis arrangements are very personal\, derived from the different musical experiences Alberto has in rock\, jazz\, country\, and pop as a session player. Yet they’re rooted in the style of the great Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel. He digs into complex arrangements of Italian and american classics\, translating them on the guitar (Georgia on my mind\, Volare\, ‘O Sole Mio)\, picking up clever harmonic movements from those great arrangers and composers and making them his own\, on the six string. \nAlberto has also been a session player\, studio owner and record producer/arranger/mixer for 25 years\, based in Rome Italy. His collaborations are diverse and range from pop artists like Robbie Dupree and the original singers of the band Chic\, to legend mixing engineer Bob Clearmountain (Springsteen\, Rolling Stones\, Bryan Adams).

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Brophy Sisters\, featuring violinist Linnaea Brophy and pianist Maeve Brophy in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nThe program will feature works for violin and piano by Eugene Ysaÿe\, Amy Beach\, Lili Boulanger\, Clara Schumann\, and William Grant Still. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nAbout the artists:\nMaeve Brophy gave her first solo recital at age 9 and made her orchestral debut at 15. She has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells\, England; the Amalfi Coast; Kiev\, Ukraine; New York; San Francisco; Seattle; Aspen; Nashville; and Memphis. She has performed for the Memphis Chamber Music Society and the Artist Ascending Series in Memphis and is a regular performer with the Luna Nova Ensemble. She is also the pianist for Nashville’s alt-classical group chatterbird. \nMaeve has performed as soloist with the Chernygev Symphony in Kiev as well as the Paducah Symphony and the Central Florida Philharmonic. She has a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University. She also studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the New England Conservatory of Music with Russell Sherman. She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher. \nMaeve is former adjunct faculty of the Blair School of Music and Belmont University in Nashville\, and she currently lives in Memphis where she works as a freelance pianist and piano teacher. She teaches at Brown Missionary Baptist Music Academy and is the Music Director of the Open Heart Spiritual Center. She has played for Opera Memphis and the Memphis Symphony and is a collaborative pianist at the University of Mississippi. She is passionate about musical advocacy and includes composers from marginalized groups on her programs. \nA scholarship student of Donald Weilerstein and Lucy Chapman at the New England Conservatory\, Linnaea has performed repertoire ranging from solo Bach to duos with piano to chamber and orchestral music. She has participated in master-classes with Vadim Repin\, Ivry Gitlis\, Alexander Vinnitski\, and Hagai Shaham at the Keshet Eilon Summer Mastercourse and the Interharmony Music Festival. \nFrom 2013-2014\, she was a member of the Discovery Ensemble. In April of 2015\, she won second place in the Bales Violin Competition at the New England Conservatory. In February 2014\, she was featured as the conductor/soloist of NEC’s Chamber Symphony when she performed the concertino 1st violin part of the Handel Concerto Grosso in C Major. In addition\, she was invited to participate in the NEC Chamber Gala Concert with her chamber group in a performance of the Brahms Horn Trio in May of 2015. \nIn 2005\, she won first place in the Music Teachers National Association junior division and played the winner’s recital the next year in Toronto. She attended the Perlman Music Program from 2005-2007 and played a solo debut recital sponsored by the PMP at the Neue Galerie in New York. Also as a PMP member\, she participated in orchestral and chamber music performances\, including a tour with her TNT quartet to the Neue Galerie and West Palm Beach\, Florida. Orchestras with which Linnaea has performed as soloist include the Nashville Symphony\, the Alabama Symphony\, and the Delta Symphony.

DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out! \nJoin us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a special performance by The Love Light Orchestra. \nThe Love Light Orchestra celebrates the Memphis big band blues-style found on the 1950s and ’60s singles of Bobby “Blue” Bland\, B.B. King and Herman ”Junior” Parker. The band of seasoned Memphis musicians derives their name from Bland’s 1961 hit “Turn On Your Love Light.” Their sound is completed with the soulful voice of bluesman John Nemeth. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7:30 pm | Show at 8 pm \nIn addition to dipping into the catalogs of Buddy Ace\, Freddie King\, and Percy Mayfield\, the band demonstrates their deftness with uptown blues via the solid originals “Singing For My Supper\, “Lonesome and High\,” and the Ray Charles-inspired opener “See Why I Love You.” Casual fans of Memphis music might only recognize their cover of Al Green’s iconic “Love and Happiness\,” but it’s reset here as a shuffle\, building upon riffs that horn player\, Marc Franklin\, says were inspired by Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus.” \nThe Love Light Orchestra’s overall sound\, says Franklin\, was inspired by Joe Scott whose work Franklin discovered after he was hired to play with Bland in the early ‘90s. “The first time I heard his work\, it sounded like Ellington\, but more down-home with extended harmonics that you don’t necessarily hear on blues or soul records. It’s a jazz thing\, throwing extra notes into the chords—at Stax they didn’t do 6th chords.” \nGrammy-winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang cut the record live at the tiny DKDC bar in Memphis\, and recalls “it was more or less done after we cut it. The Bo-Keys. \nTickets: $15\nDoors 7pm | Show 7:30pm \nYou know that old song that O. V. Wright did so well in 1971\, and no one can ever do that song again — “Nickel and a Nail”? O. V. Wright has held tight to that song and rightfully so. But not no mo. Not to take anything from O.V.\, but after nearly half a century\, now you gotta step aside. Don Bryant is here. \nThough it ain’t like he just showed up. The roots of this record are in the Memphis church\, where Don Bryant began singing when he was 5. He joined his father’s family vocal group\, then formed a gospel quartet for a high school radio gig. Broadcasting broadened the audience\, and they went secular\, singing pop at WLOK on Dick “Cane” Cole’s popular show. After parting with the DJ\, they took a very real step toward careers when\, as the Four Kings\, they began fronting Willie Mitchell’s band. \nWillie Mitchell led the swingingest\, groovin’est band in the Memphis-Mississippi-Arkansas area — the American music floodplain (He would later discover Al Green and make him a star.) Willie’s band was known for instrumental records\, but when they’d play at Danny’s in West Memphis\, Don’s group fronted them. The group broke up and Willie\, who was touring concert venues and dance halls\, needed a vocalist who could play with his supple\, slinky\, funky beats and anointed Don Bryant as his leading man. \nDon could also write songs. He was still in his teens when\, in 1960\, Willie was producing the 5 Royales\, and Don handed him “I Got To Know.” The 5 Royales put it on wax. Don was hot in the spotlight and in the writer’s room. \nAs Willie Mitchell carved out his place at Hi Records\, Don was close by. Don cut songs at Hi under the Four Kings moniker (“That Driving Beat”) and as a solo artist (“Don’t Turn Your Back On Me”). He wrote material for other Hi artists\, including Janet & the Jays and Norman West. In 1969\, still in the age of 7” singles\, Don was popular enough to release an album — though the big breakout hit stayed elusive. \nAround 1970\, Willie put Don with the Hi label’s newest act\, Ann Peebles\, who burst on the scene with “Part Time Love.” Don looked at this slight young lady and penned “99 Lbs” for her: “You wouldn’t know what I’m talking ’bout/ If you never had a love like this/… 99 lbs of natural born goodness/99 lbs of soul.” The relationship warmed\, they co-wrote the hit “I Can’t Stand the Rain” in 1973 and were married the following year. Ann’s performing career continued\, as did Don’s writing\, and they began raising a family. Occasionally\, Don returned to the microphone\, dueting with his wife\, sometimes releasing gospel material. Always\, he continued to write songs. \nAnd all the while\, that voice was maturing\, mellowing\, until these recordings that find him\, at age 74\, in peak form and taking O. V.’s song. The band is a mix of lifelong cohorts and upstart stalwarts. They understand where he’s been and where he wants to go\, making his song “How Do I Get There\,” a rhetorical question\, because they have clearly found the way. \nI was lucky and popped by the end of the recording sessions. They’d just cut “One Ain’t Enough” and were listening to playback. Veteran drummer Howard Grimes\, also of Willie Mitchell’s tutelage and the drummer on many of Don’s Hi sessions—he couldn’t keep from keeping the beat and he stepped to the middle of the control room floor. The Soul Train line formed. \nHoward’s arms came up and his feet went down. His eyes took a distant look and he was transported beyond the slow grind. His backbone slipped\, he began to dip\, everyone shouted and clapped. This kind of music moved audiences then and it moves them now. Even the music makers can’t stand still.
