SUMMARY:Mark Edgar Stuart & The Blueshift Ensemble w/ special guests Bailey Bigger\, Alexis Grace\, & Infinity Stairs
DESCRIPTION:Mark Edgar Stuart & The Blueshift Ensemble w/ special guests Bailey Bigger\, Alexis Grace\, & Infinity Stairs \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nThursday\, December 11\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:30 pm \n$22 in advance (plus fees) | $27 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nBeloved Memphis singer-songwriter\, Mark Edgar Stuart\, joins The Blueshift Ensemble once again for their 4th Annual Christmas Show! It will be an unforgettable evening of songs\, stories\, symphonic sounds\, and shenanigans. Special guests will include Alexis Grace with visuals by Infinity Stairs\, plus a very special opening set by Bailey Bigger & Wyly Bigger. \nYou’ll have a tough time finding a more widely-embraced modern singer-songwriter in Memphis. Quick-witted and empathetic\, aloof but probably alert of the room tone\, most folks will find themselves compatible with Mark Edgar Stuart. His musicality and honest voice showcase a resilient and relaxed artist\, both sage and seasoned. John Prine even admiringly referred to him as the “Remote Control Guy” when they met\, a nod of approval for one of Stuart’s signature songs. Grammy-winning music writer/director Robert Gordon is a big fan\, often spinning Mark’s tracks on his weekly radio show\, and other critics agree: “His acerbic wit is reminiscent of Randy Newman” (No Depression); “Always maintaining a tender demeanor\, his songwriting is smart as it is sincere” (Pop Matters); “His wry\, cutting view of the world makes something old new again” (Paste Magazine); “Damn fine songwriter” (Arkansas Times) \n

SUMMARY:Above Jupiter: "Abscission" Record Release Show (+ opener The Narrows)
DESCRIPTION:Above Jupiter: “Abscission” Record Release Show (+ opener The Narrows)\nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nSaturday\, November 22\, 2025  \nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM  \n$12 in advance (plus fees) | $15 at the door  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAbove Jupiter celebrate the release of their full-length album ‘Abscission’ along with Memphis indie rock favorites the Narrows. The new vinyl album will be hot off the press and available at the show. \nContemporary art rock band Above Jupiter is back with their second full-length album\, and first after signing with Red Curtain Records. Described by The Memphis Flyer as “a beat-driven soundscape with equal parts slashing guitar\, skronky synth\, and cool singing that lives in a kind of timeless pop utopia\,” ‘Abscission’ expands on the sound of their self-titled debut with elements of lofi\, R&B\, nu-jazz\, and progressive influences. The result is a more mature sound\, which says a lot about a band whose members are all still in high school. \n‘Abscission’ is a conceptual album that tells the story of main characters Eleanor\, McNeil\, Evergreen\, and Elise\, with each song offering a view into the Shakespearean-style tragedy that unfolds as the album progresses. A special edition of the lilac-colored vinyl LP includes a zine booklet that tells the story through lyrics\, paintings\, and prose. \nDeparting from their first LP’s home studio produced approach\, the band knew these songs would benefit from the analog warmth of a professional studio\, and they found the perfect home at Memphis Magnetic Recording Co. All songs were tracked live in the room using the studio’s collection of vintage instruments\, giving the album a timeless sound that complements the craftsmanship of Above Jupiter’s songs.

SUMMARY:Kathy Zhou and Aybil: "REVERIE"
DESCRIPTION:Kathy Zhou and Aybil: “REVERIE” \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nFriday\, November 21st\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:30 pm \n$15 in advance (plus fees) | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nKathy Zhou and Aybil cordially invite you to their evening reverie. Through spellbinding performances by candlelight\, Kathy and Aybil share a night of riveting tales\, heartfelt storytelling\, and community connection through song. Each musician will perform a stripped-down set of their songs\, interweaving the stories behind their music and how each composition came to be. Come join us for an unforgettable\, intimate evening full of close audience interactions interspersed with deep\, heartfelt music meant to unify\, spark dialogue\, and nurture connection. \nKathy Zhou is a genre-bending\, piano-powered\, singer-songwriter whose music incorporates traces of art pop\, baroque folk\, theatre\, and classical. Her work has been described as “mesmerizing\,” evoking the feeling of being on a stormy island\, in a colorful nightmare\, or in a dramatic storybook. Her live performances are vivid and magical\, like if Regina Spektor played in a coffee shop with a fantasy-cinematic twist. From her very first note\, Kathy conveys that something magical and wondrous is happening. Each song is like its own little dramatic play with compelling emotional arcs that sometimes fall into a dreamlike stream of consciousness. Audiences have repeatedly stated that “no one else sounds like her\,” as Kathy has carved a style that is uniquely her own. In 2023\, Kathy’s music video to her song\, “Strange Child\,” was in the international Indie Memphis Film Festival. Kathy’s upcoming work\, “A Vivid\, Magic\, Scene\,” is a collection of songs about processing the past and coming to terms with the present\, drawing upon nature/fantasy themes. \nAybil (pronounced Abel) is a Memphis born singer\, songwriter\, observer\, and peacemaker. Writing since an early age\, she works to express the beauty of joy\, sadness and the moments in the middle. Since making her debut in 2020 with the haunting\, introspective single “Jordan Poole”\, Aybil has continued to self-release genre-blending projects rooted in a love for storytelling. Her sound draws comparisons to the inspiring soulful stylings of Bill Withers and India Arie\, while maintaining a vision all her own. \nAudiences can expect an unforgettable night marked by emotionally stirring instrumentation\, raw vocals and authentic lyricism.

SUMMARY:Cameron Bethany: "YGOMN" Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:YGOMN: The Listening Session \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nFriday\, November 14\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:30 pm \n$30 in advance (plus fees) | $36 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nJoin us for an intimate\, genre-bending evening as Cameron Bethany unveils YOUGETONMYNERVES\, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2017 debut YOUMAKEMENERVOUS. This isn’t just a listening session; it’s a ritual. A sonic reckoning of faith\, fun\, and forbidden romance. \nExpect live performances\, a deep-dive Q&A\, and moments you weren’t meant to hear\, until now. \nCameron Bethany is a musical and visual artist\, an enchantment in the flesh and a perpetual student of the craft. Born into a family of musicians\, creativity runs through him like melody through a favorite song. His sound? Soulful with a twist—think R&B kissed by rock\, shaded with experimental tones. He calls it Mod-Fusion\, a genre-blurring approach that bends expectation and feeling in equal measure. \nA gentle disruptor where light and shadow meet\, Cameron’s live performances are less about entertainment and more about transformation. Whether in an intimate room or on a grand stage\, his goal remains the same: to alchemize emotion and leave audiences feeling seen\, stirred\, and spellbound. \nCameron’s musical work has been featured in commercials for brands like Gillette and the Netflix series Trinkets. As a visual artist\, his artwork has appeared on the Peacock series Bel-Air\, three original pieces setting the tone for modern storytelling. \nLater this year\, Cameron will release his first full-length album\, titled YOU GET ON MY NERVES. The title may be cheeky\, but the message promises to cut deep.

SUMMARY:Autumn Defense + opener Dream Journal
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Defense + opener Dream Journal \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nFriday\, November 7\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:30 pm \n$25 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAfter a ten-year break from the studio\, The Autumn Defense pick up right where they left off on their long-anticipated sixth album\, Here and Nowhere. Infusing the band’s breezy\, harmony-drenched take on Laurel Canyon with lush orchestration and psychedelic flourishes\, the collection is dreamy and impressionistic\, full of warm\, inviting tunes as beautiful as they are bittersweet. Like much of the group’s catalog\, it’s an album full of mystery and wonder\, a rich\, open-hearted work that nods to everything from Nick Drake and John Martyn to Carole King and David Crosby as it contemplates the passage of time\, reckoning with what we lose\, what we gain\, and who we become along the way. \nFounded by core duo John Stirratt and Pat Sansone—and now featuring longtime rhythm section James Haggerty and Greg Wieczorek—The Autumn Defense first took shape in New Orleans\, where the band recorded their 2001 debut\, The Green Hour. While the group has at times been pigeonholed as a Wilco side project (Stirratt is a founding member\, and Sansone joined around the release of 2004’s A Ghost Is Born)\, The Autumn Defense’s sound has always been decidedly more West Coast than alt-country\, drawing comparisons to The Beach Boys\, The Byrds\, and Love over the course of five critically acclaimed studio albums. NPR hailed the group’s “timeless pop songs\,” while Rolling Stone called their music “gorgeous” and “delightful\,” and the New York Times praised their delivery as “warm and radiant.” \nOpening the show is duo Dream Journal! \nDream Journal is a collaboration between Rachael Grant and her husband\, Robby (Vending Machine\, Mellotron Variations). He performs songs from his solo catalog and creates swirly loops while Rachael reads excerpts from their dream journals.

SUMMARY:Cypress Ensemble: "Beethoven and Foote"
DESCRIPTION:Cypress Ensemble: “Beethoven and Foote” \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nTuesday\, October 28\, 2025 \nDoors open at 6:30 pm | Show Starts at 7:00 pm \n$18 in advance (plus fees) | $22 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe Memphis-based Cypress Ensemble\, a group of close friends and dedicated musicians\, invites audiences to a compelling evening of chamber music that bridges the familiar and the forgotten. \nThe program features one of Beethoven’s beloved Opus 18 string quartets—works that have become cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire. Known for their youthful energy\, charm\, and emotional depth\, these quartets capture Beethoven at a moment of brilliant innovation. This particular quartet includes one of his most celebrated slow movements\, offering a moment of sublime beauty within a piece full of joy and wit. \nPaired with Beethoven’s classic is a true hidden gem: the Piano Quintet in A minor by Arthur Foote\, a name largely unfamiliar to modern audiences despite his historic importance. Foote was the first successful American-trained composer\, and in his time\, this quintet was hailed by critics as “as good as anything coming out of Europe right now.” His music is marked by lyrical\, easily followed melodies and a sense of adventurous exploration—hallmarks of early American classical expression. \nThis 70-minute concert offers a rare chance to hear Foote’s masterwork live\, alongside a Beethoven quartet that continues to resonate across centuries. It’s an evening designed to inspire discovery and celebrate the richness of the chamber music tradition. \nDon’t miss this unique musical experience with Cypress Ensemble.

This intimate concert offers fans a first listen to the stories and sounds shaping The Gospel Truth\, alongside the authenticity and connection that have defined her career. \nGarrison Starr is the quintessential musical triple-threat\, singer\, songwriter\, Grammy-nominated record producer\, and her soon-to-be-released latest full-length album\, Garrison Starr and The Gospel Truth\, reveals her at the height of her powers. \nStarr calls the new collection of songs\, “Swamp Gospel Hymns for Humans\,” the next chapter in her story of recovery and healing from her Evangelical Christian upbringing. Her previous album\, “Girl I Used To Be\,” released during the pandemic in March 2021\, launched her exploration of deconstruction on the path towards self-love and forgiveness. “Girl I Used To Be” is the story of saying goodbye to what was\, and The Gospel Truth is the story of the journey over the bridge to freedom. \nStarr has been releasing singles from the new record over the last several months\, following a number of TV placements on Monarch\, Bull\, and most recently\, Walker: Independence\, a consistent pattern for Starr throughout her remarkable career.

SUMMARY:DALLAS UGLY
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts present DALLAS UGLY with Cyrena Wages in The Green Room\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, JUNE 6\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 (plus fees) | $25 at the door |\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\nNashville’s Dallas Ugly (Libby Weitnauer\, Owen Burton\, and Eli Broxham) is a band of truly trusted friends who – after a decade of playing together – return with their best work yet.\nSitting somewhere between indie rock and Americana and beautifully produced in collaboration with Grammy-winning engineer Justin Francis\, their sophomore album See Me Now is contemporary\, crisp\, and alive. It is a fiddle-filled entry in the current band-with-guitar renaissance that puts them in conversation with acts like MJ Lenderman\, Big Thief\, and Allegra Krieger while still channelling the sparkly sing-along heights of late 90s radio. The growth of heartache\, finding footing in an unstable world\, and modern anxiety resonate out in soaring harmony.

SUMMARY:Nanocluster (Immersion | SUSS)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Nanocluster in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nTuesday\, March 18\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nIn celebration of the release of Nanocluster Vol.3\, Immersion (Colin Newman & Malka Spigel) in collaboration with ambient country masters SUSS bring their Nanocluster series to North America. One performance comprising a set each from Immersion & SUSS followed by a collaborative set. \n\n\nNanocluster is the extension of Colin and Malka’s relationship\, friendships and commitment to art and ideas. They initially met when Colin produced Malka’s band in 1985. The collaboration started there. They then became a couple and created their own projects\, like the instrumental electronic duo Immersion\, in 1994. \n\nThe songs had been written and rehearsed prior to each performance. This adventure led to a debut album\, Nanocluster Vol 1\, released in 2021 with Stereolab singer/guitarist Laetitia Sadier\, German post-rock duo Tarwater\, electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss and experimental artist Robin Rimbaud (Scanner).  \nNanocluster Vol 2 further developed this idea with a stark beauty that sounds like a future pop with sleek lines and unexpected great melodies. Built around Thor Harris\, the charismatic percussion player from Swans and many other projects\, and Cubzoa (Jack Wolter from the band Penelope Isles).  \nKey to the process is Colin and Malka’s radio show for Slack City radio\, Swimming In Sound with its entertainingly diverse playlist that has widened their horizons. It’s also helped build relationships not only with these collaborators but also musicians like the ambient country masters SUSS\, with whom they have produced Nanocluster Vol.3 which will be released in mid February 2025 followed by extended Nanocluster tour in the USA.  \nMalka: “Nanocluster is collaboration but in a very specific form. We don’t have rules. It’s a series of creative snapshots.” \nColin: “It’s chemistry & music. Malka & I operate as a team and now we’ve taken it to another level.” \nNanocluster is a 21st century collusion of shared ideas\, creating a momentary extended musical family. It’s about musical and personal relationships and the meeting place in the middle. A temporary band of house guests. SUSS just moved\, in ideas merged and new soundscapes were forged. This is the place where Immersion happens.

With a slide in her left hand and conviction in her voice\, Wise inhabits the lines that come next\, delivering them as a mystical incantation and a purposeful statement of fact. “No matter where I go y’all/I give them something real/People all over the world/Need that Mississippi feel.” \nThe Memphis band with songwriting collaborator Bob Buckley and Memphis legends Jim Spake and Tom Lonardo is always a fresh spin on the Wise and Wise/Buckley originals and arrangements of covers.
