DESCRIPTION:Those Pretty Wrongs\, featuring Jody Stephens and Luther Russell\, will perform in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $15 \nAfter their self-titled 2016 debut\, Jody Stephens did not assume that he and Luther Russell had a second Those Pretty Wrongs album in them. But that turned out to not be the case. The Memphis-Los Angeles duo released Zed For Zulu in the fall of 2019. After a few shows (including one at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts)\, they toured the U.K. with The Delines. The duo were gearing up for a West Coast U.S. tour with The Jayhawks and an Australia tour when Covid scampered those plans. Now they’re excited to finally resume with another show at The Green Room and the Jayhawks shows at the end of October. Jody and Luther are also working on their third album as well as readying a reissue of their first two LPs. Those Pretty Wrongs will be accompanied by a string section led by Jonathan Kirkscey.

She started with piano and voice lessons and then later took various music classes in college. DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nGifted singer-songwriter Arlo McKinley will release his debut solo record at age 40 on John Prine’s Oh Boy records — after he almost gave up on music altogether. His story is one of hope and sincerity\, and he is living proof that great songs will reach the right ears eventually\, even if it takes time. \nMcKinley’s Oh Boy Records solo debut\, Die Midwestern\, is deeply rooted in street soul\, country\, punk\, and gospel and draws on personal stories\, set against the backdrop of his hometown of Cincinnati\, Ohio. It was crafted down river\, in Memphis’ legendary Sam Phillips Recording Service\, produced by GRAMMY Award-winning Matt Ross-Spang\, with an all-star Memphis band of Ken Coomer\, David Smith\, Will Sexton\, Rick Steff\, Jessie Munson\, and Reba Russell. There\, McKinley recorded ten remarkable songs\, some dating back fifteen years \, all penned with weight\, honesty\, and gritty hope that comes from living in the rustbelt city where his songs were born. \nMatt Ross-Spang stated\, “I am in awe of Arlo’s songs and his dedication and embodiment of each one when he performs them. His willingness to bare it all on this record was more electric than the equipment used to capture it.” \nArlo McKinley is the last artist John Prine and his son Jody Whelan signed together to their label Oh Boy records. \nJody Whelan shared\, “John was reserved in his praise for songwriters. I played him a couple of Arlo’s songs\, and he heard “Bag Of Pills” and said\, “That’s a good song\,” which for him\, was very high praise. He loved Arlo’s voice\, this big guy with a sweet\, soulful\, gospel voice. He loved the dichotomy of the hard life lived\, presented through such beautiful songs\, and John was very excited about the promise of the album’s release.” \nMcKinley stated\, “The feeling of knowing that a hero of mine took time out of his day to come see me perform is such an accomplishment in itself that if it all ended the next day\, and I found out music just wasn’t in the cards for me\, I would’ve still considered everything I have done as a success.” \nOn Die Midwestern\, McKinley’s songs bleed truth and emotion from a heart scarred by wild nights and redeemed by soulful Sunday morning confessions. His lyrics are laid bare\, stark and arresting in their honesty\, and often penned from real-life experience. “Bag Of Pills” is an autobiographical and frank account of the drug issues which affect his hometown. \n“I wrote it after I sold some pills so I could take a girl out. Those were rough times and also right around the time I started seeing real drug addiction very close to me. After watching so many friends die from drug abuse\, it turned into me praying that it doesn’t get any worse while knowing that it will\, resulting in my writing of the lyrics\, ‘Life\, I don’t want it if it’s so easy to die.’” \n“Gone For Good” sees McKinley share his lessons from broken relationships. \n“I wrote ‘Gone For Good’ after a serious\, long relationship of mine ended. It’s about me realizing how short I fell on even trying to make it work.” Title track “Die Midwestern” reflects on McKinley’s love/hate relationship with Ohio\, “I love it because it’s everything that I am\, but I hate it because I’ve seen it take my loved ones lives. I’ve seen it make hopeful people hopeless.” McKinley reflects on his brutal honesty in his songs\, “Songwriting has to be real. I’m 100% putting myself out there. I’m not writing fiction. To me\, it is just about honesty. ” \nBy age 8\, McKinley was singing at his family’s church\, Bethlehem United Baptist\, where he first saw the light of music. Early musical loves outside church were his Kentucky native father’s bluegrass and timeless country records of Hank Williams\, Sr.\, as well as\, Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, Otis Redding\, and George Jones. Then his two older brothers’ punk and metal collection drove him to throw himself raw onto the Cincinnati punk scene. \n“I grew up in the punk scene with my brothers\, and dad has all of that stuff that came out of King Records like Hank Williams\, and I was just surrounded by it\,” McKinley says. “I still take parts of it\, and I feel I write songs in a punk rock way.” \nWith concert covers ranging from Johnny Paycheck and The Misfits to Rihanna and Post Malone\, McKinley shows a diverse range of musical interest\, which he attributes to the musical melting pot of the Cincinnati scene. \n“You go back to the history of Cincinnati music\, and you can see and feel that the river back then connected everything\, and it all flowed into one spot and brought all kinds of music here\,” says McKinley\, adding\, “That’s why I think this town has never been known for one kind of music because so many things came through here.” \nHe pursued a solo career in 2014 with his own band The Lonesome Sound and achieved some success\, including a nomination for Album of the Year\, Songwriter of the Year\, and Best Americana Act from the Cincinnati Music Awards\, but his career stalled and he almost gave up altogether. \n“I don’t know why the world works the way it does\, but I’m beyond grateful to be in this situation.” McKinley stated\, adding\, “ I’m a little wiser in my ways and a 20-something me would’ve found a way to destroy the one dream that has stuck with me my entire life — being a working musician.” \nHe also almost missed his big break\, which came when he was offered an opening slot for Tyler Childers and his now-manager was trying to reach him on the phone to offer him an opening slot. Arlo initially dodged the persistent unknown caller. Eventually\, they connected after a friend hit him up on social media and he took the call. \n“My buddy was like\, ‘Arlo\, Tyler’s team is trying to get hold of you.’ I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t take that call. Still delivering tuxedos\, which was my side job before I was a full-time musician.” \nSince\, McKinley has been making a name for himself around the country\, humbly sharing stages with kindred musical spirits John Moreland\, Jason Isbell\, Justin Townes Earle\, and contemporary rising singer/songwriters Ian Noe and Colter Wall\, eventually attracting the attention of Oh Boy\, who signed him in March 2020. \nMcKinley reflects on the significance of the timing of his release\, stating\, “I only met John briefly\, and I would’ve loved to have sat with John and talked music\, which I’m sure would’ve happened\, but I treasure the moment we had together when he came to see me play a show. His passing was a major knockdown blow for the entire team. I’m sure John had a vision for Oh Boy Records\, and I’m proud and honored to be able to contribute to the labels continued legacy.” \nMcKinley’s Die Midwestern remains an album of hope\, and he knows first-hand how his music can connect with his growing audience. \n“I had a guy who was dealing with brain cancer walk up to me and say that he was done with it\, but something in my songs resonated with him and made him get out and start living even though he knows what is ahead of him. Nothing is more important than that. That’s why I write songs like I do. I’m just another lost\, hurting person in this place. I just like to sing about it.”

November’s performance features guitarist Brooks Robertson in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nBrooks Robertson just doesn’t need much more than two thumbs\, eight fingers\, and six strings on a wooden box to carry his listeners away. \nHailed by prominent exponents of his instrument like Nokie Edwards\, Thom Bresh\, John Jorgenson\, and Mason Williams\, the young fingerstyle guitarist embodies the creative vision of a postmodern world: It’s the music that counts. Brooks utilizes his superb technical abilities to play bass\, rhythm\, and melody simultaneously and surpass the borders of conventional genres. He merges hauntingly beautiful compositions\, country rhythms\, and jazzy harmonies with funky licks into his very own art form – sometimes delivered with a punch\, sometimes with a smile. \nBrooks was born in Eugene\, Oregon\, in 1989. Seeing Buster B. Jones perform at a festival near his hometown became a life-changing experience for the kid from the sticks. At just eleven years old\, he was immediately inclined to pick up the guitar. Soon\, the world-renowned fingerstyle virtuoso and instructor dedicated his spare time to introducing his new fans into the secrets of the fretboard\, and after six months of lessons the natural talent performed his first show with his mentor. \nWhen Buster B. Jones took him under his wings\, Brooks began playing high-profile gigs such as the Nokie Edwards Festival\, the NAMM Show in Anaheim\, the Montreal Jazz Festival\, or the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield among others. By the time he was a teenager he had become the youngest endorsee of Godin Guitars and traveled to several states and foreign countries to perform. Brooks went on to play on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio classic “A Prairie Home Companion” in 2004\, where he won first place in a talent competition for 12 to 20 year old participants. \nIn recent years\, while still appearing regularly at prestigious events like the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) Convention in Nashville\, Brooks focused on perfecting his craft\, soaking up new tunes\, styles\, and techniques\, as well as blending them into his own groovy and soulful original music. He entered the “Yamaha Six String Theory Guitar Competition\,” which drew participants from more than 40 countries all over the world. Brooks was invited to perform in the finals at the Broad Stage in Los Angeles in March 2010. A star-studded jury\, including Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour\, eventually chose him as winner of the country category and second place winner overall. \nAlthough he is deeply rooted in the powerful tradition of the genre\, founded by the likes of Merle Travis\, Jerry Reed\, Thom Bresh\, and Buster B. Jones\, Brooks also draws inspiration from the elegant mastery of the legendary Chet Atkins and other phenomenal players. His own compositions and arrangements have even been compared to fingerstyle jazz champions Lenny Breau and Earl Klugh. Now\, as energy and maturity come together\, this young man is ready to step out of his mentor’s shadows and electrify the world with the sheer acoustic beauty his fingers create\, when touching a set of strings. \n“The future of American fingerstyle guitar” – Buster B. DESCRIPTION:This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Modern Masters Jazz Series\, a monthly series featuring jazz soloists from around the country. \nFor November’s performance\, New Orleans-based pianist Victor Atkins will be featured in an unforgettable performance with the series house band\, The Ted Ludwig Trio. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nVictor “Red” Atkins is known for being a “powerful and unconventional” piano player. Victor is a native of Selma\, Alabama\, and currently lives in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Atkins had an early start with jazz as his father loved Charlie Parker. At home\, he learned how to appreciate music and develop an ear for more complex music. \nHe began his professional career on Delfeayo Marsalis’ “Pontius Pilate’s Decision” record. After recording he moved on to be a professional pianist alongside many notable musicians such as Elvin Jones\, Mark Whitfield\, Nnenna Freelon\, Joshua Redman\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Leroy Jones. Subsequently\, he returned to school to finish his Masters at the Manhattan School of Music. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1998. Atkins is well-known for his work with Grammy-winning\, New Orleans-based Los Hombres Calientes as well as his re-working of Duke Ellington’s “Such Sweet Thunder\,” a tribute to William Shakespeare. \nNot only is Victor Atkins a professional musician but also a tenured professor at the University of New Orleans\, where he teaches theory\, composition\, jazz keyboard\, and applied piano. He also works with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra on compositions\, and has played with them numerous times. Victor Atkins credits Donald Brown as his mentor. His studies with him had the largest impact\, and it is when he developed a sincere appreciation for jazz.

October’s performance features Canadian guitarist Don Ross in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nIn 1988\, Don became the first Canadian to win the U.S. National Fingerpick Guitar Championship. He won again in 1996\, still the only two-time winner of the competition. He signed a recording deal with Toronto-based Duke Street Records and released three CDs for them between 1989 and 1993. He then recorded three CDs for Sony/Columbia between 1994 and 1997\, and then three more for Milwaukee-based Narada Records between 1999 and 2003. \nWith the collapse of the conventional recording industry in the early 21st century\, Don entered into a new venture with Milwaukee-based CandyRat Records and its founder\, Rob Poland. The move to a completely internet-based model of releasing recordings resulted in the first ever CandyRat CD\, 2005’s Music for Vacuuming. Don has released numerous CDs and DVDs for the new label\, including his new album\, A Million Brazilian Civilians\, on CD and see-through orange vinyl. \nDon has toured regularly since 1989\, across Canada\, the USA\, a dozen European countries\, Japan\, Taiwan\, China\, Australia\, Russia\, and India. He has played with symphony orchestras in Canada and Germany and collaborated live and on recording with U.S. guitarist Andy McKee\, Canadian singer/guitarist Brooke Miller\, Canadian guitarist Calum Graham\, and Toronto bassist Jordan O’Connor. He also composes scores for television\, radio\, and film\, and does production and recording engineering for a variety of other musicians. In addition to acoustic guitar\, Don also plays electric guitar\, slide dobro and lapsteel guitar\, harp guitar\, voice\, piano\, keyboards\, bass guitar\, and drums. He has just started learning to play the Kelstone\, a 9-string guitar developed by Belgian musician/inventor Jan Van Kelst. At this point\, Don admits that learning a new instrument from scratch at this point in his career is “humbling. I’m a rank amateur Kelstone player\, and I still completely suck at it!” \nDon Ross grew up in Montreal\, has lived at various times in Ontario\, Nova Scotia\, the USA\, China\, and Quebec\, and now resides in Halifax.

George Kanzler of the Newark Star Ledger proclaims that he is “the most impressive and creative member of a new generation of jazz guitarists.” And Chip Deffaa of the New York Post observed that he is “…one of the very finest young guitarists working today.” \nIt seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which the critics have debate is whether the remarkable jazz guitarist is one of the best or simply the best. \nBorn in Newport Beach\, California\, in 1958\, Howard began playing at age ten\, inspired by recordings of Armstrong\, Basie\, and Goodman\, as well as those by guitarists Barney Kessel\, Charlie Christian\, Django Reinhardt\, and George Van Eps. Soon\, he was working professionally around Los Angeles\, playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. He is a member of the New Orleans-based jazz group Astral Project with Johnny Vidacovich\, Tony Dagradi\, and Steve Masakowski. He has been described as one of the best and most sought-after bassists in New Orleans. \nHe has performed with John Scofield\, Stanton Moore\, and John Medeski\, as well as John Abercrombie\, Art Baron\, Ellis Marsalis\, Earl Turbinton\, Eddie Harris\, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown\, Lionel Hampton\, Arnett Cobb\, and Banu Gibson\, among others. He has recorded with Chet Baker\, Alvin “Red” Tyler\, James Booker\, Johnny “Tan Canary” Adams\, Charlie Rich\, and Zachary Richard\, among others. \nHe produced Astral Project’s Elvado which won OffBeat magazine’s 1998 Best Modern Jazz Album of the Year award. Although Elvado has been described as “straight-ahead bop-influenced jazz with a Crescent City ambiance\,” Astral Project’s live performances are also known for improvisation\, which Singleton has described as “composing in the groove.” \nHe has led projects such as “3 Now 4\,” “The James Singleton Orchestra\,” and “The James Singleton Trio.” Some of Singleton’s recent projects include playing as a member of the New Orleans saxophonist Robert Wagner Trio and the New Orleans keyboardist Robert Walter Trio. August’s performance features Irish virtuoso guitarist Shane Hennessy in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nIrish virtuoso guitarist Shane Hennessy has established himself as one of the leading guitarists on the world stage\, known widely for his fingerstyle\, flatpicking\, and percussive guitar-playing approaches. With a unique style of solo guitar playing that encompasses the range of a whole band – covering drums\, bass\, rhythm\, and lead lines – Shane builds a complete sonic world entirely on his own. \nBilled as “one of the most exciting live performers of his generation\, with an ability to move between styles and genres with ease” by Irish Music Magazine\, audiences can never be too sure what will come next during the exciting mix of jazz\, blues\, country\, soul\, traditional Irish music\, and world music he offers. With the addition of some smooth vocals\, genre-hopping improvisations\, and well-arranged covers\, it makes sense why music legend super-producer Nile Rodgers (CHIC) thinks that “his style is killer\, it’s really cool stuff\,” and why guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel says that Shane “is one of the most engaging musicians in the world today.” \nOver the course of a performance\, Hennessy brings the audience from elated highs to the depths of reflection\, delivering stories\, anecdotes\, and off-the-cuff remarks with the same passion he holds for the music he performs. He says that it is hard to describe in words what he does on stage without experiencing it in person\, but it becomes clear upon witnessing his performance why his tour schedule is so hectic. DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Modern Masters Jazz Series\, a monthly series featuring jazz soloists from around the country. \nAugust’s concert will feature award-winning drummer Geoff Clapp in a spectacular performance with the series house band\, The Ted Ludwig Trio. \nTickets: $20\nDoors 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nAbout Geoff Clapp:\nWhile Geoff Clapp was a high school student at the North Carolina School of the Arts (studying classical percussion and playing in the school’s jazz band)\, he had the opportunity to meet and hear New Orleanians\, including trumpeter Wynton Marsalis\, pianist Ellis Marsalis\, and drummer Herlin Riley (All-Star 1991). “I never knew drums could be played like that\,” exclaims Clapp of Riley’s style and talents. “That really sparked my true interest in jazz.” \nThese events ultimately resulted in Clapp attending the University of New Orleans in the fall of 1989. He was among the first talented group of musicians\, which included drummer Brian Blade (All-Star 1993)\, trumpeter Jeremy Davenport (All-Star 2000)\, and bassist Chris Thomas (All-Star 1999) in the new jazz studies program headed by Ellis Marsalis. “We were just a bunch of hoodlums trying to play jazz\,” says Clapp with a chuckle. \nAbout the series:\nThe Modern Masters Jazz Series is guest-curated by renowned two-decade New Orleans jazz guitarist Ted Ludwig\, who has received an ASCAP award\, the Louis Armstrong award\, and the Overture to the Cultural Season award and is a member of The Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. He has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet\, Bensusan is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist\, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique. \nThere is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work\, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His “manner” of playing defies classification – crossing world\, classical\, jazz\, traditional\, folk and more. Her mother sang country and gospel songs by way of the church. \nIn 1978\, Roseanna Vitro moved to New York City with guitarist Scott Hardy and began to study with Gabor Carelli\, a professor from the Manhattan School of Music\, and began to perform with Kenny Werner and Fred Hersch. She sang with Lionel Hampton and toured with him. She appeared at The Blue Note\, Iridium\, Birdland\, and Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Lincoln Center. She appeared with Steve Allen at The Town Hall at The Apollo Theater and recorded an album of Allen’s songs. In 2005\, she performed and recorded with the Kenny Werner Trio at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She has worked with Kenny Barron\, Christian McBride\, Elvin Jones\, Gary Bartz\, Kevin Mahogany\, and David “Fathead” Newman\, all of whom have appeared on her recordings. She was a guest on Marian McPartland’s radio program\, Piano Jazz. Their compositional and improvisational practice at once pushes at the boundaries of instrumental music in the 21st century and situates the music within the lineage of New Orleans jazz and groove traditions. \nThis concert at Crosstown Arts is a part of their 2020 album release tour\, celebrating their new album\, “Meeting In Progress\,” released in February 2020 on ears&eyes Records. \n“Showing a clear strategic intelligence and inventiveness and a substantial depth of artistic resourcefulness\,” according to No Depression magazine\, Nutria has toured throughout the United States playing art centers\, jazz clubs\, and dive bars. In 2017\, they performed on the Millennium Stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, DC. In 2016\, they were commissioned by the New Orleans-based Marigny Opera Ballet to compose “Wary Heat\,” a new ballet that was premiered in February 2017 and reprised in January 2018. In 2019\, Nutria began a weekly residency at one of New Orleans’ top venues for creative music\, Bacchanal Fine Wine. \nNutria was formed in New Orleans in 2014 as a composition workshop for its members\, who were active in different corners of the local music scene. A fingerstyle guitar wizard. A deft songwriter\, capable of haunting depth and wry humor in the space of one song. An impassioned and ecstatic vocalist\, as well as a mesmerizing live performer\, seamlessly melding head-spinning guitar pyrotechnics and raw emotion into one breathtaking package. Pacetti represents a culmination of the best of the American and British traditions. His 1997 Waterbug debut\, Solitary Travel\, garnered critical raves. “This guy is very good\, indeed\,” deadpanned the highly respected (and highly critical) UK magazine Folk Roots. And Dirty Linen\, the influential US roots publication\, opined\, “Although the woods are full of young guitar virtuosos\, few have developed the style\, technique\, and artistic wisdom of Sam Pacetti. \nSolitary travel heralds the arrival of one of the most talented instrumentalists and composers to appear in acoustic music in a month of Sundays.” Sam Pacetti grew up in North Florida\, hardly known as a hotbed of either the folk tradition or musical innovation. At age 13\, he found the music of both Chet Atkins and Merle Travis\, profound influences on his early musical development. Then fate intervened shortly afterward in the person of Gamble Rogers\, the legendary picker and raconteur from St Augustine who took the young Pacetti under his wing. It was a time of astonishing musical and emotional growth. Pacetti and Rogers met and played weekly for a year\, until tragically Rogers died while trying to save a drowning tourist caught in an undertow at Flagler Beach\, Florida. \nThough brief in their time together\, Rogers was able to instill in Pacetti the importance of the folk process\, the passing of music and oral tradition from teacher to student. Pacetti still counts Rogers as his most influential mentor. Tradition and innovation neatly balance in Sam Pacetti’s music\, the whole infused by a relentless intelligence intent on musical and philosophical synthesis. Martin Simpson\, Richard Thompson\, Joni Mitchell and Merle Travis are touchstones to Pacetti\, and while there are strong elements of the American primitive school of guitar wizardry throughout his work\, there is a powerful raw emotionality evident as well – an earthy sensuality more reminiscent of a Greg Brown or a red-dirt blues master than of a musical academian. Word has started to spread about Sam Pacetti. And as with anything truly innovative\, it starts at the grassroots. You won’t see Pacetti written up in People or Us. The 63-year-old guitarist is neither a soul modernist nor revivalist\, but simply a small-town auto mechanic who’s never shaken his love for old school legends like Muddy\, Wolf\, and Lightnin’. \nA lifelong resident of tiny Duck Hill\, located in the hills east of the Delta\, Farmer grew up on the family farm. He first took up the acoustic guitar in his early teens\, and through picking cotton\, soon saved up enough money to buy an electric instrument. \nHe played for audiences at home and at school events and learned about blues and R&B\, mostly through listening to a powerful station out of Nashville. “John R of WLAC\, that’s how I listened to Lightnin’ Hopkins\, Howlin’ Wolf. That’s how I got my first album by Lightnin’ [The Fire Records LP Mojo Hand]. I got the address off the radio\, and they sent it.” \n“I learned Lightin’ pretty good. I can play all the up-to-date stuff now — B.B.\, Little Milton — but I like the old stuff; that’s the real blues. The blues they’re singing today\, that ain’t blues to me; it just doesn’t have the feel.” \nWillie’s father Alex\, a harmonica player who helped young Willie tune his guitar\, had played as a young man with his brothers\, including Walter\, who was recognized as one of the best guitarists to come out of the area. \nIn the early ‘50s\, Walter played together with Leo “Bud” Welch\, who grew up in the region. Sadly\, Walter was killed in Chicago in 1964 — “a woman liked Walter\, and a man got jealous and killed him” — and Willie never heard him play. \nIn his early ‘20s\, Farmer joined a loos- knit band that played at juke joints across the area — in Duck Hill\, Grenada\, Kilmichael\, and down in the Delta in Greenwood and Charleston. He eventually tired\, though\, of the rough-and-tumble clubs where “people liked to fight like crazy. ” \nFor about fifteen years\, Farmer worked regularly with local semi-professional gospel groups\, including the Rising Sun Singers\, who appeared on TV and over the radio in Greenwood\, the Angelettes\, and\, for nine years\, the Grenada-based Silvertone Gospel Singers. In 2003\, he helped found the annual Grassroots Blues Festival\, staged in a meadow outside Duck Hill. Through the event\, he befriended down-home blues players from across the state\, including Willie King and Welch. \n“The Man From the Hill” marks the first time that he’s spent serious time in the studio. Recorded over multiple sessions at Producer Bruce Watson’s Memphis based Delta-Sonic Sound Studio. Farmer enjoyed working in a North Mississippi Hill Country vein with Jimbo Mathus and session drummer George Sluppick. He even dipped back into gospel\, singing harmony together with Memphis’ Barnes Brothers on [the Sensational Nightingales’] “At the Meeting.” \nFor the past 30 years\, Farmer has run his own auto repair shop and hopes that the release of this record and associated touring will allow him to retire. \n“I’m trying to get out of that shop. I’m tried of messing with those cars. It’s been a long time.” \nTo celebrate 30 years of traveling with and writing songs on his black Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar named ”Paco\,” Nashville-based songwriter Tim Easton recorded an entire album direct-to-lacquer at The Earnest Tube Studio in Bristol\, Virginia. This performance-based method of capturing songs leaves no room for manipulation or overdubbing\, therefore conjuring the roots of American Music. Each track was recorded via portable lathe\, which cuts a mono signal directly to a lacquer acetate disc\, much the way The Carter Family or Jimmie Rodgers would have made their first records in Bristol over 90 years ago. \nIn as much time as it takes to listen\, Easton recorded nine original songs and one cover using a single 1940s RCA 74B ribbon microphone\, alternating between the rapid fire flat-picking and steady\, Travis-style thumb-picking technique that he has been streamlining all these years\, coupled with his Country Blues style rack harmonica playing. The occasional foot stomp can be heard as well\, vibrating through the floors. Easton sings songs from the personal experiences and observations of man who has spent a few decades on the road. His folk music is not always the gentle kind. His authenticity is pervasive. This is what the tradition of the troubadour sounds like. \nThis LP serves as a love letter of sorts to Easton’s trusty Gibson acoustic guitar\, which he purchased in 1987 for $100\, plus two cheap electric guitars on trade. Leaving Ohio and exploring Europe on and off for seven years\, Easton traveled extensively by train\, bus\, and thumb\, learning to write songs along the way. Soon after a Deadhead in Paris named his guitar “Paco\,” Easton made his first recordings just a short walk away from the Charles Bridge in Prague\, where he had been busking in the Summer after Czechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolution. \nAfter returning Stateside and signing with EMI Music Publishing\, he released several critically acclaimed albums with both New West Records and Thirty Tigers. His last album\, 2016’s American Fork (Last Change Records) reached #11 on the Americana Music Association Radio Charts. Easton continues to travel the world and perform while also delving into film score work done at his home studio in Nashville. He has scored two feature documentaries\, “The Power Of Two” (2012)\, and “The Bullish Farmer” (2017) and also placed original songs in film and television. The American South has left it’s emotional and sonic mark on many a traveler\, and it shows in Easton’s range of performances on this unique LP.

While Remy has been widely acclaimed for a panoply of closely observed character studies\, on Heavy Light she turns inward\, recounting personal narratives to create a deeply introspective about-face. \nThe songs are an inquest into the melancholy flavor of hindsight\, both personal and cultural. Heavy Light follows 2018’s internationally critically acclaimed breakout album\, In A Poem Unlimited. Recently named one of the best albums of the decade by Pitchfork\, it was lauded across the pond by the likes of The Guardian\, The Sunday Times\, and Crack and Q magazine for being Remy’s most accessible record in her then decade-long career. \nHeavy Light is produced by Remy and was recorded live with 20 session musicians – including E Street Band saxophonist Jake Clemons – in Montreal’s acclaimed Hotel 2 Tango studio. Heavy Light is a set of songs conceived as a balance between orchestral percussion (as richly arranged by percussionist Ed Squires) and the human voice (conducted by Kritty Uranowski). This album is a love letter to one of the great American birthplaces of soul. Rooted in her love of Aretha Franklin\, Al Green\, and Otis Redding\, Morgan James delivers as only she can. The Memphis Magnetic Tour will be a feast for the ears and the heart\, from the soul of a great artist with a love for what is real and true in American music. \nLet’s start with the voice\, an instrument through which she can communicate anything. A gift bestowed upon her that she has expertly trained\, meticulously nurtured\, and passionately galvanized into action by an urgency to make real music. Next\, the stories\, and she has them in spades. They are full of truth and beauty\, heartache and thoughtfulness. They reveal colors we weren’t expecting to see. They make us close our eyes and relate. And finally\, the soul – the emotional and intellectual energy through which these parts are fueled. That special something that prompted The Wall Street Journal to herald her as “the most promising young vocalist to come along so far this century.” That young vocalist is Morgan James. And Morgan James is a soul singer. \nArmed with her dedication to create authentic soul music\, James and her husband Doug Wamble\, her producer\, co-writer\, and arranger\, spent months writing twelve new songs in New York City. “Doug and I have always wanted to make a classic record like this\,” she says. “Doug is originally from Memphis and we are both so inspired by the roots of classic soul music. Being entrenched in a place like that really informs everything you make there.” So\, instead of recording in New York\, she aimed straight for the source and booked a week at a new music studio in Memphis\, at the recommendation of drummer George Sluppick. \nShe immediately connected with the space: Memphis Magnetic\, a renovated old bank transformed into a classic recording studio\, decked out with a collection of vintage Nashville gear by owner Scott McEwen. The space exemplified exactly what James wanted her album to be: something new through the prism of something old. She and Wamble assembled a group of local musicians\, including Sluppick\, organist Al Gamble\, bassist Landon Moore\, and pianist Alvie Givhan. They tapped legendary Memphis musicians Reverend Charles Hodges and Leroy Hodges\, who were the backbone of the Hi Records rhythm section\, which played with Al Green and Ann Peebles\, to contribute to two tracks. And finally\, the team was rounded out with a classic Memphis horn section\, plus the amazing Memphis String Quartet. \n“What I’ve learned over the years is to hire great people and let them do what they do best\,” says James. “We came in with all the music charted and ready and left space for people to be themselves and infuse it with their own magic. I really wanted every single person involved in the album to be from Memphis and to channel the great albums I admire so much. From every end of the spectrum\, in every department\, it felt like the right people.” \nThe entire album was recorded to analog tape\, a first for James. She wanted to be less precious about the process overall and to capture the same invigorated feeling as her live performances. Much of the album comes from single\, complete takes\, giving it a vibrant\, in-the-moment sensibility. The songs on the album range in tone\, but there’s a hopeful\, life-affirming feeling that threads through the tracks. The playful “I Wish You Would” takes its cues from “Mr. Big Stuff\,” while “All I Ever Gave You” looks back on losing someone after endless sacrifices. The album also features two duets\, another first for James\, with Marc Broussard and three-time Grammy nominee Ryan Shaw. The collaboration with Shaw\, “I Don’t Mind Waking Up (To A Love This Good)” is the first single and a song James calls one of her favorites she’s ever written. And a standout moment comes on the closing track “Who’s Going to Listen To You? (When You’re Crying Now)\,” a song James and Wamble wrote with lyrics from a poem by Spin Doctors’ lead singer Chris Barron. It creates a poignant and heart-wrenching final note for the album\, a collection of genuine\, satisfying songs that embrace the best of American songwriting. The experience was so inspiring and affirming that James ended up titling the album Memphis Magnetic after the studio where it was made (an homage to Jimi Hendrix and his Electric Ladyland). \nFor James\, Memphis Magnetic is the culmination of a life-long love affair with music. She grew up listening to everyone from Joni Mitchell to Paul Simon to Prince to Aretha Franklin\, cultivating an insatiable love for strong songwriters. After graduating from The Juilliard School with a classical music degree\, and performing in the original companies of four Broadway productions\, James began writing and recording her own music. Meeting her mentor Berry Gordy\, Jr. led to a record deal at Epic Records\, where she recorded and released her solo album Hunter in 2014. In addition to her studio albums\, James recorded and released a full album cover of Joni Mitchell’s seminal Blue as well as The Beatles’ White Album in 2018 to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Through her unique and varied career\, there have been many ups and downs\, but James cites her failures as more important than her successes in shaping the artist she is today. \nAfter her tenure with Epic Records\, she took charge of her career from the business side as well. She cultivated a new world of fans with her viral YouTube videos\, and while connecting with them on social media and at her live shows\, she found the support and strength to go out on her own as an independent artist. Over the last several years\, James has built her own empire and established herself as a touring powerhouse\, allowing her to raise the funds to create her albums and make every decision from the ground up. \n“This album feels so unburdened by anybody or anything. All of the songs were written for this project. They were recorded in the same way\, in the same room. It’s a moment in time captured. I felt like I was a part of the lineage of soul music. The first feed will be an audio feed for the audience in The Green Room\, as the musicians\, out of sight\, perform their original work in the empty Crosstown Theater. The second feed will video-capture The Green Room audience so the performing musicians in the Theater may virtually watch and technically perform for their audience on the screen. The audience in The Green Room will be informed in advance that they will be watched by the performing musicians in the theater\, creating an immersive environment in which the performers’ new music might achieve a vivid and seemingly living omnipresence. \nSimilar to the experience of being inside a haunted house or abandoned building\, this spectral approach to auditory perception will be\, among other things\, a sonic experiment in vulnerability. It will be an attempt to enhance and heighten the audio-sensory experience for the listener and perhaps will intensify the presence and impact that music can have when our fight-or-flight response is instinctively activated\, giving the sounds we hear the power to demand our full attention. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nNicholas Maloney:\nNicholas Maloney is a sound artist\, multi-instrumentalist\, performer\, and recording engineer from Jackson\, Mississippi. Working primarily in the areas of drone\, ambient\, musique concrète\, and electroacoustics\, Nicholas creates recordings that he feels can provoke emotion\, while at the same time offering a palette of sound that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. He looks to challenge the listeners’ focus and perception of sound. Much of his work explores the textural nature of sound within a framework of progressing and evolving compositions. He is interested in the interaction among texture\, sound\, and space. \nUnder his full name\, Nicholas Maloney creates and releases compositions using field recordings\, found sounds\, and a variety of processing and audio transformation techniques. He also records under the moniker\, Blanket Swimming\, exploring the more melodic and ambient side of experimental music using guitar\, synthesizers\, tape manipulation\, field recordings\, voice\, and other instrumentation. Maloney also records under the name Sleep Silver Lightning\, exploring compositions for the guitar and voice. In 2015\, Maloney co-founded the net-label Warm Milk Recordings with Whitson Ramsey. \nGunter Gaupp:\nGunter is a composer and teacher based in Memphis\, who’s work combines interests in noise composition and genre music. Born in Louisiana\, Gunter’s recent work maintains a connection to jazz and folk traditions in his approach to melody and harmony\, while exploring new possibilities through extended technique and graphic notation. His music has been premiered recently in Chicago and Green Bay\, as well as internationally in Vienna and Paris. Gunter completed his MM in 2019 at the University of Memphis\, where he studied composition under Kamran Ince and John Baur. More recently\, Gunter has begun teaching music to middle and high school students at Memphis Rise Academy. Gunter will be presenting his new work for A Change of Tone as a quintet\, featuring Aaron Phillips (saxophone)\, Anna Welden (voice)\, Bryan Pallotta (piano)\, Michael Todd (percussion)\, and Ben Walsh (double bass). \nThe Achelois Collective:\nThe Achelois Collective is a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to helping co-design opportunities to create healthier communities through the art of new music. The ensemble’s 10 members are featured as composers\, collaborators\, chambers musicians\, and soloists who hail from across the continental U.S. Established in the summer of 2019\, TAC seeks to elevate\, celebrate\, and embolden female/non-binary voices in modern music and to support projects by artists of under-acknowledged backgrounds and nationalities. \nIn an effort to assist the world of classical music to become more egalitarian\, TAC creates spaces for active participation and appreciation for audiences of all genders\, ages and musical knowledge. But you soon find yourself saturated in her world\, one where nostalgia and desire fill the space like rising floodwaters. \nMuch of this is due to the poetry that patters through Cardona’s lyrics\, tugging you deeper and deeper out to sea. For example\, in her new EP\, Ophelia\, Cardona sings in the titular song\, “I’ve said this all before but now I swear it\, please dare it\, don’t you know how far I’d go for love….” She wrote the song in a single night during which she found herself wanting to end her life after the dissolution of her relationship with a long-time lover. Despite the heaviness of the subject matter\, “Ophelia” has a light-hearted feel\, conveying the haunting juxtaposition between what’s felt and what’s shown on the outside. \nFollowing the end of her relationship\, Cardona moved around the world to Seoul\, South Korea\, to escape her memories. The other two songs on Ophelia\, “A Little Too Late” and “Mother Earth” were written during this period of recovery. \n“A Little Too Late” is a tribute to a fleeting but life-changing love affair with a man named Joe\, whom she fell for shortly after her breakup and whom she credits as pulling her out of her dark depression. Cardona sings\, “In just autumn when the leaves all beg the trees to let them go… Maybe he loved me because he let me go\, but it’s a little too late\,” about her brave decision to leave Joe behind and travel alone to South Korea in search of healing. \n“Mother Earth” explores Cardona’s ambivalent feelings about the idea of becoming a mother. Ultimately\, the song celebrates the resilience and nurturing that both Mother Earth and women embody despite the abuses of mankind. \nBefore her musical career\, Cardona grew up in Cleveland\, Ohio\, and moved to Memphis\, Tennessee\, shortly after graduating high school. Over the following decade\, she cut her teeth performing in the southern city\, where she learned from Memphis’ incredible musicians and artists. Eventually\, after her stint in South Korea\, she made her way to Los Angeles. \nCardona enlisted some of the top talent in Southern California to help her with this project. Produced by guitarist DORI AMARILIO\, she’s backed by widely respected pianist and composer JOSH NELSON\, who is a recording artist\, composer\, and educator who has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz. He has recorded for countless albums\, films\, and T.V. shows\, as well as releasing seven CDs as a leader. She first heard Nelson on the radio shortly after moving to Los Angeles in 2012. “He let the music breathe\, and he added to it with such grace and elegance\,” says Cardona. “I was thrilled that Josh agreed to work with me. He was so incredibly busy\, that it took a full year of scheduling and rescheduling until we could nail down a rehearsal and a recording date. He was an absolute dream to work with\, and I would wait another year to do it again.” \nShe’s also backed by bass player DAVE ROBAIRE\, who is a professor of Jazz Studies at California State University\, Northridge’s prestigious music school and is the Manager of Music at Sam First\, one of Los Angeles’s most important venues for creative music. On drums is DAN SCHNELLE\, one of the busiest\, sought-after musicians in the Los Angeles area. Amarilio brought on board MICHAEL HUNTER to play flugelhorn. Hunter has performed with the likes of Stanley Clarke\, Kamasi Washington\, and Lenny Kravitz\, among many others. And guitarist NOZOMI YAMAGUCHI is a dear friend of Cardona. “He was an integral part of giving this record a sound all its own\, since he brings a more soulful rhythmic approach to these songs\,” says Cardona. \nHer upcoming EP\, Secret Crush\, reveals Cardona’s sexier side\, blending her contemporary jazz style with more pop and soul than her previous work. Secret Crush was produced by GRAMMY award winning producer SAM BARSH\, who’s written for and played piano on records by the likes of Aloe Black\, Kendrick Lamar and Anderson Paak. \nCardona wears her heart on her sleeve. Her emotions\, vulnerable and exposed\, flow through her music like a gentle stream. Her voice is sinuous and lyrical\, and the musicianship on these three tunes is superb. As Cardona puts it\, “I want my music to convey the nuances of the experiences I’ve had. I want listeners to feel that they can relate to me on the deepest level.”

She first picked up a guitar at only nine years old and began to write songs within the first week of playing. \nAt age 17\, Bailey won “Memphis’ Best Song Of 2017” for her original song\, “Wildflower.” Since then\, she has performed at many festivals and venues from Celebrate Memphis (being one of 4 headliners)\, AmericanaFest\, and many more. She has recorded at Dark Horse Studios\, Sun Studios\, and Ardent Studios. Bailey has also been recognized as a top ten up-and-coming Americana artist you should be listening to by Memphis Magazine. \nFollowing Bailey’s first record “Closer to Home\,” she released her second EP\, “Between The Pages.” This EP was engineered by Jessica Willis and released by the University of Memphis record label\, BlueTOMRecords. \nXaris Waltman’s mother claims she was humming tunes before she could talk. As a young child\, Xaris picked up her dad’s guitar and discovered a deep connection to folk songs. Xaris loved how the songs had lives of their own and have been telling the same stories for generations. Xaris still feels the same way. Relaying these stories to audiences during her shows makes her feel like she’s doing something bigger than herself. \nIn 2019\, at nineteen years old\, Xaris released an album of old-time songs titled “Under The Willow” with BigTone Records. Right out of high school\, Xaris began traveling the country solo; just a girl and her guitar. Playing listening rooms\, living rooms\, and festivals\, she has captured the people of small-town America’s ears with her melodious\, high-toned voice.

Alisa studied with Professor Peter Spurbeck at the University of Memphis\, received her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Michigan with Anthony Elliott\, and her Master of Music in Cello Performance from Northwestern University with Hans Jensen. Along with jazz legends trumpeter Marvin Stamm and pianist Bill Mays\, Alisa is a member of The Inventions Trio which performs a fusion of jazz and classical repertoire. The Trio has toured and released three albums\, including the diverse works of Bill Evans\, Bill Mays\, Villa-Lobos\, and Miles Davis. On Broadway\, Alisa has performed in many shows including Sunday in the Park with George\, An American in Paris\, If/Then\, and Next to Normal. \nMaeve Brophy gave her first solo recital at age 9 and made her orchestral debut at age 15. She has a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University. Maeve has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells\, England\, the Amalfi Coast\, Kiev\, Ukraine\, New York\, San Francisco\, Seattle\, Aspen\, Nashville\, and Memphis. Maeve is former adjunct faculty of the Blair School of Music and Belmont University in Nashville and currently lives in Memphis where she works as a freelance collaborative pianist\, soloist\, and piano teacher. \nTom Lonardo grew up playing drums in his father’s dance band. He holds a MM from the University of Mississippi and attended the Berklee College of Music studying with Alan Dawson. He has played music all his life including gigs with Mose Allison\, Di Anne Price\, Joe Restivo 4\, 3rdMan\, and Dog Police. \nTim Goodwin is very active in the recording industry and performs across the United States as a bassist. He has performed with numerous jazz artists including Lee Konitz\, George Colemen\, Pepper Adams\, Art Farmer\, Michele LeGrand\, Jon Hendricks\, Phineas Newborn\, Mose Allison\, and many others. Mr. Goodwin was bassist of a trio which was selected to participate in the Kennedy Center “Jazz Ambassadors” program to present jazz performances and lectures around the world. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Miami and Miami-Dade Community College and joined the University of Memphis as a faculty member in 1984.

Larson has been described by critic Howard Reich of The Chicago-Tribune as “a player for whom the word ‘prodigious’ was coined.” Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen called him “a saxophonist who brings Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner to mind\,” and Nate Chinen of The New York Times said he is “the sort of jazz musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success.” Larson has garnered numerous awards that distinguish him as one of the most promising artists of his generation. \nAs a student\, Larson was a member of virtually every national program dedicated to showcasing excellence in young jazz talent\, including The Grammy Band\, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra\, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead\, YoungArts Jazz Fellows\, Telluride Student All-Stars\, and Jazz Band of America\, among others. Upon graduating from University High School in 2008\, Adam moved to New York City to pursue his BM and MM in Jazz Performance on full scholarship from The Manhattan School\, where he graduated with honors as a Master’s student and the recipient of the William H. Borden Award for Outstanding Performance in Jazz in 2014. \nLarson has released five albums: one for Ropeadope Records\, two under the Inner Circle Music label\, and two produced independently. Larson’s most recent recording “Second City” received a four-star rating from Downbeat magazine\, was listed as one of the best releases of 2017 in both Downbeat and Jazziz Magazine\, and was prominently featured in several publications. Larson’s fifth record\, “Listen With Your Eyes\,” was released on Ropeadope Records on September 6th\, 2019. \nLarson keeps an active schedule with his own groups and as a sideman\, having performed at several venues across the U.S.\, including The Jazz Standard\, Birdland\, The 55 Bar\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Note\, The Village Vanguard\, Smalls\, Jazz at The Bistro\, The Jazz Estate\, The Jazz Showcase\, and several others. \nBeyond maintaining an active touring and recording schedule\, Larson continues to be a sought-after clinician and master class presenter at several high schools and universities across the country and beyond\, including appearances at HKU Conservatory-Utrecht\, University of Iowa\, Drake University\, University of Northern Iowa\, Temple University\, Yale\, Manhattan School of Music\, and University of North Texas among many others.
