The program features works from Dubois-Yao Duo’s new album “Adoration – Music of the Americas\,” which will be released on October 20 on Spice Classical Records\, Boston. \n—- \nPraised for having such a powerful and yet welcoming\, warm sound\, Brazilian violist Amaro Dubois has approached his unique playing in many areas of the classical music industry by placing an emphasis on expanding the repertoire for the viola through collaborative projects in Brazil and North America. An avid performer\, Amaro has performed in several professional ensembles\, including the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra\, the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra\, the Paducah Symphony Orchestra\, the Mobile Symphony Orchestra\, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra\, as well as other orchestras and chamber groups. Additionally\, Amaro was awarded the Iris Orchestra Fellowship under the guidance and mentorship of music director and conductor Michael Stern for the ’19-’21 seasons. He is a recording artist for Breve Classics Records where he debuted his first album\, Preludes by Bach\, a complete album of preludes from the Cello Suites of J.S. Bach\, as well as Spice Records where he will be debuting his latest album\, Adoration. He recently founded the Yao-Dubois Duo with the marvelous collaborative pianist Tingting Yao. Their mission is to share compositions by underrepresented composers\, including African American\, Latin American\, and women composers. Their first album\, Adoration\, is scheduled to be released in mid-October 2021 and features a diverse program of composers\, including Florence Price\, Guerra Peixe\, Villa-Lobos\, and Rebecca Clarke\, among other wonderful artists. \n—- \nTingting Yao is active as a collaborative pianist and chamber musician with singers and instrumentalists throughout North America\, the U.K.\, and China. Since moving to the U.S. in 2016\, she has performed in the Mid-South Flute Festival (UofM)\, Mid-South Horn Workshop (UCA)\, and NASA Regional IV (OSU). She has also worked as a collaborative pianist at the Interlochen Center of the Arts\, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Festivals include SongFest (LA)\, Oxford International Piano Festival (UK)\, Cadenza International Summer Music School (UK)\, Lake District Summer Music International Festival (UK). She is joining Collaborative Piano Institute and Pittsburg Festival Opera in summer 2019 as a collaborative pianist. \nWhile in the U.K.\, Tingting was flourishing as a collaborative pianist when studying at Birmingham Conservatoire. Competition awards as an accompanist include Ambache Prize Performance of Music by Women Composers\, Delia Hall Accompanist Prize for Pianists\, Andrew Downes Performance Prize\, Winfred Micklam Prize\, BC String Prize\, and BC Percussion Prize. Soloist awards include Beryl Chempin Beethoven Prize for Pianists and Renna Kellaway Piano Recital Prize.

An endorsed artist for P. Mauriat saxophones\, Boston Sax Shop “Heritage” necks and Vandoren reeds\, mouthpieces\, and ligatures\, Adam began playing saxophone at the age of 11. \nDescribed by critic Howard Reich of The Chicago-Tribune as “a player for whom the word ‘prodigious’ was coined”\, by Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen as “a saxophonist who brings Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner to mind”\, and by Nate Chinen of The New York Times as “the sort of jazz musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success”\, Larson has garnered numerous awards that distinguish him as one of the most promising artists of his generation. As a student\, Larson was a member of virtually every national program dedicated to showcasing excellence in young jazz talent including The Grammy Band\, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra\, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead\, YoungArts Jazz Fellows\, Telluride Student All-Stars\, and Jazz Band of America\, among others. Upon graduating from University High School in 2008\, Adam moved to New York City to pursue his BM and MM in Jazz Performance on full scholarship from The Manhattan School\, where he graduated with honors as a Master’s student as the recipient of the William H. Borden Award for Outstanding performance in Jazz in 2014. \nLarson has released five albums: one for Ropeadope Records\, two under the Inner Circle Music label and two produced independently. Larson’s most recent recording\, “Second City\,” received a four-star rating from Downbeat Magazine\, was listed as one of the best releases of 2017 in both Downbeat and Jazziz Magazine\, and was prominently featured in several publications. Larson’s fifth record “Listen With Your Eyes\,” was released on Ropeadope Records on September 6th\, 2019. Larson keeps an active schedule with his own groups and as a sideman\, having performed at several venues across the U.S.\, including The Jazz Standard\, Birdland\, The 55 Bar\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Note\, The Village Vanguard\, Smalls\, Jazz at The Bistro\, The Jazz Estate\, The Jazz Showcase\, and several others. \nLarson continues to perform in NYC with some of the greatest musicians in the genre. \nAs a guest artist\, Larson has been invited to present masterclasses on music business\, improvisation\, and composition at more than fifty universities across the globe. \nAdam has recorded five albums and maintains an active touring schedule year-round playing his original music.

He speaks to bikers\, cowboys \,and cosmopolitans. His songwriting and deep reflective voice carry a conversational thread that always offers a rich\, colorful story…” – WILL SEXTON \nOriginally from Memphis\, Jed began playing music and found his mentor\, Keith Sykes. For a number of years\, Zimmerman and Kelley Mickwee played music and toured together. Sykes was instrumental in recording their music\, and the two released three records while they were the duo Jed and Kelley. Eventually he landed in Texas where he got to personally hear and meet the likes of Guy Clark\, Joe Ely\, Rodney Crowell\, and John Prine\, all of which are major influences on his songwriting to this day. Jed then spent a good period of time living in Taos and Red River\, New Mexico\, where his songwriting was heavily influenced from the people and landscape of the southwest. \nJed will celebrate the release of his new album “Below The Blooms” with an intimate acoustic set in his former hometown of Memphis.

Boyce is a Grammy-nominated American blues singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist born and raised in Como\, Mississippi\, United States. He is a protege of Hill country blues musicians\, including R L Burnside\, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. \nBoyce began his career in the early 1960s playing drums for his uncle\, the fife and drum performer Othar Turner. Later\, he was the drummer for Jessie Mae Hemphill and is featured on her 1990 album Feelin’ Good. \nHis debut full-length album\, entitled Ain’t the Man’s Alright\, was released when he was 52 years old and featured musicians including Cedric Burnside\, Luther Dickinson\, and Calvin Jackson. \nHis second album release\, Roll and Tumble\, was released on September 8\, 2017 on Waxploitation Records. The album included the father and son double drumming team of Cedric Burnside (R.L. Burnside’s drummer and grandson) and Calvin Jackson. The album was produced by Luther Dickinson (of The Black Crowes and North Mississippi Allstars fame) and David Katznelson. \n\n\nRyan Lee Crosby is a Boston-based singer/songwriter\, guitarist\, and music teacher. His sound pays tribute to the Bentonia and North Mississippi blues traditions\, centered in 12 string guitar\, lap style dobro\, dynamic vocals\, and a driving foot stomp. \n\n\nFor six years\, Crosby toured Europe annually\, developing his sound before making the pilgrimage to Mississippi to meet Jimmy “Duck” Holmes in 2019. Since that first meeting\, Crosby has returned to Bentonia four times to learn about the style directly from Holmes at the Blue Front Cafe and to perform at the Bentonia Blues Festival. Crosby recently recorded a new album\, Winter Hill Blues\, with renowned producer Bruce Watson (Fat Possum/Big Legal Mess Records) at his Memphis studio\, Delta-Sonic Sound. \n\nThrough music\, Crosby hopes to inspire peace\, openness\, and respect for tradition\, for culture\, for each other\, and for one’s self.\n\n\n\nFrom an early age growing up in the south of England\, Shaun Marsh learned the power and potential of music through his mother\, a performing artist and soul singer in the sixties and seventies. Being introduced to early pop\, rock & roll\, R&B\, and soul had a profound inspiration on him. It wasn’t until he reached his forties that Shaun began to look back at the origins and true roots of the music that he’d been listening to most of his life.\n\nLate one night while tuning in to John Peel on the radio\, he heard Hell Hound On My Trail by Robert Johnson. The raw emotion of that recording compelled him to immerse himself in the early pre-war blues. He began to develop the techniques for playing finger picking-style country and Delta blues from the recordings of the early pioneering musicians who paved the way. It was these rich and lonesome strands of storytelling that brought him to Memphis\, where he continues to study in the shadow of this powerful music that defines this city. His repertoire on solo acoustic guitar ranges from Robert Johnson and Charley Patton to Skip James and Big Bill Broonzy. Following the threads of the blues from Memphis\, he also gets inspiration from such greats as Johnny Cash\, Magic Sam\, and Otis Redding.

DESCRIPTION:Join Hermon Mehari\, an award-winning jazz trumpeter based in Paris\, France\, and Kansas City-based vibraphonist and pianist Peter Schlamb for a special performance in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $15\nStudent tickets: $5 (limited availability\, available at the door with student ID) \nHermon Mehari’s sophomore album as a leader\, “A Change For the Dreamlike\,” takes on a more personal tone. Written and recorded in a barn in the French countryside during le confinement\, it shows only hints at the aesthetic set by his debut album. The songs play like personal journal entries\, versions and visions of wishes\, fantasies\, and memories. Together they create a kind of modern mixtape of dreams\, in every sense of the word\, in which the trumpet is a vulnerable presence. The project features a number of incredible musicians: Tony Tixier\, Peter Schlamb\, Ryan J. Lee\, Kae Dilla\, DeAndre Manning\, Hugo LX\, Karl McComas-Reichl\, Jeff Hill\, and Zach Morrow. \nMehari was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competition and placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild competition in Sydney\, Australia. As a founding member of Diverse\, whose eponymous debut album on Seattle-based Origin Records reached the Top 40 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts\, he has performed professionally with noted saxophonists Jaleel Shaw\, Logan Richardson\, Bobby Watson\, Ben Van Gelder\, and Tivon Pennicott. He has also performed with Aaron Parks\, Joe Sanders\, Hubert Laws\, Randy Brecker\, Tony Tixier\, Dave Pietro\, Clay Jenkins\, and many other great musicians. \nPeter Schlamb is a vibraphonist and pianist based in Kansas City\, MO. He recently released a second album \,“Electric Tinks\,” and maintains a busy schedule performing locally\, nationally\, and internationally. Peter spent several years in New York\, where he attended and graduated from New School University. During his time in New York\, he recorded and performed with artists including Logan Richardson\, David Binney\, Mike Moreno\, and Ben van Gelder. Peter currently leads the group Electric Tinks and is a member of Logan Richardson’s Blues People\, as well as frequently performing with several other ensembles around the world.

At age four\, he began teaching himself melodies on the piano by ear. He started taking lessons the same year and began developing his skills and sound. His first gig came at the age of nine when he started playing frequently at his local hometown diner in Arkansas. From there\, he expanded his reach across the river to Memphis and down Highway 61 to Mississippi. At seventeen\, he began writing his own music. Raised on the sounds of Memphis legends like Jerry Lee Lewis\, B.B. King\, and Elvis Presley\, Wyly mixed those influences with the blues from nearby Mississippi and the country music in Arkansas to develop his own musical style. He has composed three classical symphonies and arranged for gospel\, hip-hop\, and pop music. \nRenicea Michelle Bell (violin/vocalist) is a graduate of the University Of Memphis with a B.M. in Music Business. She began singing at very young age and loves all types of music. She is equally at home on the violin and just recently performed at a Juneteenth festival. She is currently in graduate school pursuing a masters degree in Education. \nMario Williams (viola/violin) is a graduate of the University of Memphis with a B.M. in Music Performance. He has performed with several professional ensembles in the Mid-South area\, including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mario has a fiddling background that blends into his classical music background. He has a love of chamber music and music education. \nJoseph Miller (cello) is a graduate from the University of Memphis with a B.M. in Cello Performance. He has been playing since the age of 10. He has performed with several other professional ensembles in the Mid-South area. \nAll the members of Ensemble X are graduates of Shelby County Schools and their music programs.

DESCRIPTION:Those Pretty Wrongs\, featuring Jody Stephens and Luther Russell\, will perform in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $15 \nAfter their self-titled 2016 debut\, Jody Stephens did not assume that he and Luther Russell had a second Those Pretty Wrongs album in them. But that turned out to not be the case. The Memphis-Los Angeles duo released Zed For Zulu in the fall of 2019. After a few shows (including one at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts)\, they toured the U.K. with The Delines. The duo were gearing up for a West Coast U.S. tour with The Jayhawks and an Australia tour when Covid scampered those plans. Now they’re excited to finally resume with another show at The Green Room and the Jayhawks shows at the end of October. Jody and Luther are also working on their third album as well as readying a reissue of their first two LPs. Those Pretty Wrongs will be accompanied by a string section led by Jonathan Kirkscey.

His story is one of hope and sincerity\, and he is living proof that great songs will reach the right ears eventually\, even if it takes time. \nMcKinley’s Oh Boy Records solo debut\, Die Midwestern\, is deeply rooted in street soul\, country\, punk\, and gospel and draws on personal stories\, set against the backdrop of his hometown of Cincinnati\, Ohio. It was crafted down river\, in Memphis’ legendary Sam Phillips Recording Service\, produced by GRAMMY Award-winning Matt Ross-Spang\, with an all-star Memphis band of Ken Coomer\, David Smith\, Will Sexton\, Rick Steff\, Jessie Munson\, and Reba Russell. There\, McKinley recorded ten remarkable songs\, some dating back fifteen years \, all penned with weight\, honesty\, and gritty hope that comes from living in the rustbelt city where his songs were born. \nMatt Ross-Spang stated\, “I am in awe of Arlo’s songs and his dedication and embodiment of each one when he performs them. His willingness to bare it all on this record was more electric than the equipment used to capture it.” \nArlo McKinley is the last artist John Prine and his son Jody Whelan signed together to their label Oh Boy records. \nJody Whelan shared\, “John was reserved in his praise for songwriters. I played him a couple of Arlo’s songs\, and he heard “Bag Of Pills” and said\, “That’s a good song\,” which for him\, was very high praise. He loved Arlo’s voice\, this big guy with a sweet\, soulful\, gospel voice. He loved the dichotomy of the hard life lived\, presented through such beautiful songs\, and John was very excited about the promise of the album’s release.” \nMcKinley stated\, “The feeling of knowing that a hero of mine took time out of his day to come see me perform is such an accomplishment in itself that if it all ended the next day\, and I found out music just wasn’t in the cards for me\, I would’ve still considered everything I have done as a success.” \nOn Die Midwestern\, McKinley’s songs bleed truth and emotion from a heart scarred by wild nights and redeemed by soulful Sunday morning confessions. His lyrics are laid bare\, stark and arresting in their honesty\, and often penned from real-life experience. “Bag Of Pills” is an autobiographical and frank account of the drug issues which affect his hometown. \n“I wrote it after I sold some pills so I could take a girl out. Those were rough times and also right around the time I started seeing real drug addiction very close to me. After watching so many friends die from drug abuse\, it turned into me praying that it doesn’t get any worse while knowing that it will\, resulting in my writing of the lyrics\, ‘Life\, I don’t want it if it’s so easy to die.’” \n“Gone For Good” sees McKinley share his lessons from broken relationships. \n“I wrote ‘Gone For Good’ after a serious\, long relationship of mine ended. It’s about me realizing how short I fell on even trying to make it work.” Title track “Die Midwestern” reflects on McKinley’s love/hate relationship with Ohio\, “I love it because it’s everything that I am\, but I hate it because I’ve seen it take my loved ones lives. I’ve seen it make hopeful people hopeless.” McKinley reflects on his brutal honesty in his songs\, “Songwriting has to be real. I’m 100% putting myself out there. I’m not writing fiction. To me\, it is just about honesty. ” \nBy age 8\, McKinley was singing at his family’s church\, Bethlehem United Baptist\, where he first saw the light of music. Early musical loves outside church were his Kentucky native father’s bluegrass and timeless country records of Hank Williams\, Sr.\, as well as\, Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, Otis Redding\, and George Jones. Then his two older brothers’ punk and metal collection drove him to throw himself raw onto the Cincinnati punk scene. \n“I grew up in the punk scene with my brothers\, and dad has all of that stuff that came out of King Records like Hank Williams\, and I was just surrounded by it\,” McKinley says. “I still take parts of it\, and I feel I write songs in a punk rock way.” \nWith concert covers ranging from Johnny Paycheck and The Misfits to Rihanna and Post Malone\, McKinley shows a diverse range of musical interest\, which he attributes to the musical melting pot of the Cincinnati scene. \n“You go back to the history of Cincinnati music\, and you can see and feel that the river back then connected everything\, and it all flowed into one spot and brought all kinds of music here\,” says McKinley\, adding\, “That’s why I think this town has never been known for one kind of music because so many things came through here.” \nHe pursued a solo career in 2014 with his own band The Lonesome Sound and achieved some success\, including a nomination for Album of the Year\, Songwriter of the Year\, and Best Americana Act from the Cincinnati Music Awards\, but his career stalled and he almost gave up altogether. \n“I don’t know why the world works the way it does\, but I’m beyond grateful to be in this situation.” McKinley stated\, adding\, “ I’m a little wiser in my ways and a 20-something me would’ve found a way to destroy the one dream that has stuck with me my entire life — being a working musician.” \nHe also almost missed his big break\, which came when he was offered an opening slot for Tyler Childers and his now-manager was trying to reach him on the phone to offer him an opening slot. Arlo initially dodged the persistent unknown caller. Eventually\, they connected after a friend hit him up on social media and he took the call. \n“My buddy was like\, ‘Arlo\, Tyler’s team is trying to get hold of you.’ I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t take that call. Still delivering tuxedos\, which was my side job before I was a full-time musician.” \nSince\, McKinley has been making a name for himself around the country\, humbly sharing stages with kindred musical spirits John Moreland\, Jason Isbell\, Justin Townes Earle\, and contemporary rising singer/songwriters Ian Noe and Colter Wall\, eventually attracting the attention of Oh Boy\, who signed him in March 2020. \nMcKinley reflects on the significance of the timing of his release\, stating\, “I only met John briefly\, and I would’ve loved to have sat with John and talked music\, which I’m sure would’ve happened\, but I treasure the moment we had together when he came to see me play a show. His passing was a major knockdown blow for the entire team. I’m sure John had a vision for Oh Boy Records\, and I’m proud and honored to be able to contribute to the labels continued legacy.” \nMcKinley’s Die Midwestern remains an album of hope\, and he knows first-hand how his music can connect with his growing audience. \n“I had a guy who was dealing with brain cancer walk up to me and say that he was done with it\, but something in my songs resonated with him and made him get out and start living even though he knows what is ahead of him. Nothing is more important than that. That’s why I write songs like I do. I’m just another lost\, hurting person in this place. I just like to sing about it.”

November’s performance features guitarist Brooks Robertson in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nBrooks Robertson just doesn’t need much more than two thumbs\, eight fingers\, and six strings on a wooden box to carry his listeners away. \nHailed by prominent exponents of his instrument like Nokie Edwards\, Thom Bresh\, John Jorgenson\, and Mason Williams\, the young fingerstyle guitarist embodies the creative vision of a postmodern world: It’s the music that counts. Brooks utilizes his superb technical abilities to play bass\, rhythm\, and melody simultaneously and surpass the borders of conventional genres. He merges hauntingly beautiful compositions\, country rhythms\, and jazzy harmonies with funky licks into his very own art form – sometimes delivered with a punch\, sometimes with a smile. \nBrooks was born in Eugene\, Oregon\, in 1989. Seeing Buster B. Jones perform at a festival near his hometown became a life-changing experience for the kid from the sticks. At just eleven years old\, he was immediately inclined to pick up the guitar. Soon\, the world-renowned fingerstyle virtuoso and instructor dedicated his spare time to introducing his new fans into the secrets of the fretboard\, and after six months of lessons the natural talent performed his first show with his mentor. \nWhen Buster B. Jones took him under his wings\, Brooks began playing high-profile gigs such as the Nokie Edwards Festival\, the NAMM Show in Anaheim\, the Montreal Jazz Festival\, or the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield among others. By the time he was a teenager he had become the youngest endorsee of Godin Guitars and traveled to several states and foreign countries to perform. Brooks went on to play on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio classic “A Prairie Home Companion” in 2004\, where he won first place in a talent competition for 12 to 20 year old participants. \nIn recent years\, while still appearing regularly at prestigious events like the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) Convention in Nashville\, Brooks focused on perfecting his craft\, soaking up new tunes\, styles\, and techniques\, as well as blending them into his own groovy and soulful original music. He entered the “Yamaha Six String Theory Guitar Competition\,” which drew participants from more than 40 countries all over the world. Brooks was invited to perform in the finals at the Broad Stage in Los Angeles in March 2010. A star-studded jury\, including Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour\, eventually chose him as winner of the country category and second place winner overall. \nAlthough he is deeply rooted in the powerful tradition of the genre\, founded by the likes of Merle Travis\, Jerry Reed\, Thom Bresh\, and Buster B. Jones\, Brooks also draws inspiration from the elegant mastery of the legendary Chet Atkins and other phenomenal players. His own compositions and arrangements have even been compared to fingerstyle jazz champions Lenny Breau and Earl Klugh. DESCRIPTION:This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Modern Masters Jazz Series\, a monthly series featuring jazz soloists from around the country. \nFor November’s performance\, New Orleans-based pianist Victor Atkins will be featured in an unforgettable performance with the series house band\, The Ted Ludwig Trio. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nVictor “Red” Atkins is known for being a “powerful and unconventional” piano player. Victor is a native of Selma\, Alabama\, and currently lives in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Atkins had an early start with jazz as his father loved Charlie Parker. At home\, he learned how to appreciate music and develop an ear for more complex music. \nHe began his professional career on Delfeayo Marsalis’ “Pontius Pilate’s Decision” record. After recording he moved on to be a professional pianist alongside many notable musicians such as Elvin Jones\, Mark Whitfield\, Nnenna Freelon\, Joshua Redman\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Leroy Jones. Subsequently\, he returned to school to finish his Masters at the Manhattan School of Music. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1998. Atkins is well-known for his work with Grammy-winning\, New Orleans-based Los Hombres Calientes as well as his re-working of Duke Ellington’s “Such Sweet Thunder\,” a tribute to William Shakespeare. \nNot only is Victor Atkins a professional musician but also a tenured professor at the University of New Orleans\, where he teaches theory\, composition\, jazz keyboard\, and applied piano. He also works with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra on compositions\, and has played with them numerous times. Victor Atkins credits Donald Brown as his mentor. His studies with him had the largest impact\, and it is when he developed a sincere appreciation for jazz.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. October’s performance features Canadian guitarist Don Ross in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nIn 1988\, Don became the first Canadian to win the U.S. National Fingerpick Guitar Championship. He won again in 1996\, still the only two-time winner of the competition. He signed a recording deal with Toronto-based Duke Street Records and released three CDs for them between 1989 and 1993. He then recorded three CDs for Sony/Columbia between 1994 and 1997\, and then three more for Milwaukee-based Narada Records between 1999 and 2003. \nWith the collapse of the conventional recording industry in the early 21st century\, Don entered into a new venture with Milwaukee-based CandyRat Records and its founder\, Rob Poland. The move to a completely internet-based model of releasing recordings resulted in the first ever CandyRat CD\, 2005’s Music for Vacuuming. Don has released numerous CDs and DVDs for the new label\, including his new album\, A Million Brazilian Civilians\, on CD and see-through orange vinyl. \nDon has toured regularly since 1989\, across Canada\, the USA\, a dozen European countries\, Japan\, Taiwan\, China\, Australia\, Russia\, and India. He has played with symphony orchestras in Canada and Germany and collaborated live and on recording with U.S. guitarist Andy McKee\, Canadian singer/guitarist Brooke Miller\, Canadian guitarist Calum Graham\, and Toronto bassist Jordan O’Connor. He also composes scores for television\, radio\, and film\, and does production and recording engineering for a variety of other musicians. In addition to acoustic guitar\, Don also plays electric guitar\, slide dobro and lapsteel guitar\, harp guitar\, voice\, piano\, keyboards\, bass guitar\, and drums. He has just started learning to play the Kelstone\, a 9-string guitar developed by Belgian musician/inventor Jan Van Kelst. At this point\, Don admits that learning a new instrument from scratch at this point in his career is “humbling. I’m a rank amateur Kelstone player\, and I still completely suck at it!” \nDon Ross grew up in Montreal\, has lived at various times in Ontario\, Nova Scotia\, the USA\, China\, and Quebec\, and now resides in Halifax.

George Kanzler of the Newark Star Ledger proclaims that he is “the most impressive and creative member of a new generation of jazz guitarists.” And Chip Deffaa of the New York Post observed that he is “…one of the very finest young guitarists working today.” \nIt seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which the critics have debate is whether the remarkable jazz guitarist is one of the best or simply the best. \nBorn in Newport Beach\, California\, in 1958\, Howard began playing at age ten\, inspired by recordings of Armstrong\, Basie\, and Goodman\, as well as those by guitarists Barney Kessel\, Charlie Christian\, Django Reinhardt\, and George Van Eps. Soon\, he was working professionally around Los Angeles\, playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. In 1979\, Alden went east for a summer in Atlantic City with Red Norvo\, and continued to perform with him frequently for several years. \nUpon moving to New York City in 1982\, Alden’s skills\, both as soloist and accompanist\, were quickly recognized and sought-out for appearances and recordings with such artists as Joe Bushkin\, Ruby Braff\, Joe Williams\, Warren Vache\, and Woody Herman. \nHe has continued to win accolades from critics and musicians alike\, adding Benny Carter\, Flip Phillips\, Mel Powell\, Bud Freeman\, Kenny Davern\, Clark Terry\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and George Van Eps\, as well as notable contemporaries such as Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski to his list of impressive credits. \nHoward Alden has been a Concord Jazz recording artist since the late ’80s\, where his prolific recorded output as leader\, co-leader\, and versatile sideman has captured an artist of consistently astonishing virtuosity and originality. \nHoward Alden was voted “Best Emerging Talent-Guitar” in the first annual JazzTimes critics’ poll\, 1990\, and “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” in the 1996\, 1992\, 1993\, and 1995 Downbeat critics’ poll. Although the band’s roots are firmly in the music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli\, its extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions. Pearl Django has performed at festivals\, dances\, and nightspots throughout the U.S. and abroad. They have played at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine and have been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” The band’s signature style is marked by pristine and dexterous string work\, colors of Bal Musette\, the steady pulse of rhythm guitar\, and an unmistakable swing that delights audiences of all musical sensibilities. The focus of Pearl Django was\, and is\, to incorporate the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with American swing music. In 1999\, along with the release of their third and fourth CDs\, the group incorporated their own record label\, Modern Hot Records. At about the same time\, MHR signed a national distribution agreement with City Hall Records in San Rafael\, California. He is a member of the New Orleans-based jazz group Astral Project with Johnny Vidacovich\, Tony Dagradi\, and Steve Masakowski. He has been described as one of the best and most sought-after bassists in New Orleans. \nHe has performed with John Scofield\, Stanton Moore\, and John Medeski\, as well as John Abercrombie\, Art Baron\, Ellis Marsalis\, Earl Turbinton\, Eddie Harris\, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown\, Lionel Hampton\, Arnett Cobb\, and Banu Gibson\, among others. He has recorded with Chet Baker\, Alvin “Red” Tyler\, James Booker\, Johnny “Tan Canary” Adams\, Charlie Rich\, and Zachary Richard\, among others. \nHe produced Astral Project’s Elvado which won OffBeat magazine’s 1998 Best Modern Jazz Album of the Year award. Although Elvado has been described as “straight-ahead bop-influenced jazz with a Crescent City ambiance\,” Astral Project’s live performances are also known for improvisation\, which Singleton has described as “composing in the groove.” \nHe has led projects such as “3 Now 4\,” “The James Singleton Orchestra\,” and “The James Singleton Trio.” Some of Singleton’s recent projects include playing as a member of the New Orleans saxophonist Robert Wagner Trio and the New Orleans keyboardist Robert Walter Trio. In early 2007\, he toured nationally with Skerik and Mike Dillon. \nIn 2008\, various projects included an experimental jazz string quartet composed of two former Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra members Dave Rebeck and Matt Rhody\, as well as cellist Helen Gillet. Singleton moved to Los Angeles after Hurricane Katrina but continued to perform frequently in New Orleans. In December 2008\, Singleton returned to New Orleans.
