SUMMARY:Rob Jungklas
DESCRIPTION:Rob Jungklas performs music from his new project Rebel Souls. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, August 3\, 2022\n$15 advance | $20 at the door\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAbout Rob Jungklas: \nRob Jungklas came roaring back into the Memphis music psyche with 3 new critically acclaimed recordings in a few short years: Arkadelphia\, Gully\, and Mapping The Wreckage. Ever prolific\, he has released four more since his reemergence. The Spirit and The Spine\, Nothing To Fade\, and Blackbirds on Madjack Records\, and 7 Sisters. \nHe issued his debut LP\, Closer to the Flame\, in 1987 on Manhattan Records. On the strength of an MTV video aired for the single “Boys Town\,” the record garnered airplay and modest chart success for his effort\, while creating the iconic regional anthem “Memphis Thing.” \nThe more reflective Work Songs for a New Moon\, that followed two years later on RCA\, showcased Jungklas’ nuanced blend of pop songwriting and Memphis style R&B. \nLee Froelich calls Rob’s songs “profane and poetic\, haunted by ghost and damnation” and the sentiments are echoed by the likes of Rolling Stones’ David Fricke who describes the sounds as “bloodied bottleneck guitar and choked prayer.”

SUMMARY:Memphissippi Sounds
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Memphissippi Sounds\, 2022 Blues Music Awards nominee for Best Emerging Artist\, in the Green Room on July 29\, 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $12 in advance | $15 at the door (plus fees) \n\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nOne fateful summer night in 2017\, the paths of two uniquely gifted and talented Memphis musicians aligned in a club on Beale Street. Cameron Kimbrough\, grandson of Junior Kimbrough and native of the famed Mississippi hill country\, brought his raw\, stripped-down rhythms from the fresh\, open air of Potts Camp\, MS\, to the crowded room. \nAs the audience took in Kimbrough’s beats from the drums\, they were blessed by the powerful and mesmerizing voice of Damion “Yella P” Pearson’s harmonica. Kimbrough had grown up hearing the blues from his grandfather’s juke joint\, and later taught himself to play. Yella P. was also self-taught on the harmonica\, first picking it up at age 13 and honing his style while listening to the blues on Beale Street. \nAn instant connection growing from their chance encounter\, they teamed up to form Memphissippi Sounds and immediately began creating a new sound. Their custom blend of North Mississippi hill country blues\, Memphis blues and soul\, rock\, pop\, and hip-hop was debuted at the New Daisy while opening up for guitar legend Eric Gales. \nSince then\, they’ve taken the Memphissippi Sound on the road to places such as Thacker Mountain Radio Hour in Oxford\, Clarksdale’s Juke Joint Festival\, and Little Rock’s Whitewater Tavern backing up Grammy-nominated local bluesman R.L. Boyce. Memphissippi Sounds has made local appearances at such venues as the Levitt Shell\, Radio Memphis\, and the Indie Memphis Film Festival. Between gigs\, they enjoy doing some old-school busking on South Main\, a throwback to the heyday of Memphis music. \nTheir album Welcome To The Land was released late in 2021 by Little Village to great critical and commercial acclaim\, and has ridden at the top of the radio charts since. The album has been nominated for the Best Emerging Artist Award in the annual Blues Music Awards in early May.

SUMMARY:Dustin Furlow
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of the show \nPurchase tickets here \nDustin Furlow is an award-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist whose playing and songwriting reflect a clear influence of today’s contemporary-folk artists. With comparisons to songwriters such as Ray LaMontagne and virtuoso guitar-players like Tommy Emmanuel\, Furlow eventually carved out a sound that became easily distinguishable by it’s marriage of complex guitar work and warm\, home-spun lyrics. From the haunting melodies in “Evergreen” to the foot-tapping groove of “Cherokee Lake” Dustin is an ambassador of dynamic control on stage. In 2019 he played over 200 shows\, many with Harp-guitarist and International Fingerstyle-Guitar Champion Matt Thomas. \nIn April 2021 Dustin was announced as the winner of Scottish luthier Taran Guitars’ “Young Player Bursary” award. \nIn February 2017\, he received the Veer Magazine Music Award for “Best Acoustic/Folk Artist” in the Southeastern Virginia area. That year he also received nominations for “Song of the Year” (The Garden)\, and “Album of the Year” (The Sound That You Call Home). \nIn 2016\, Furlow released the full-length “The Sound That You Call Home”\, which has enjoyed airplay on NPR radio’s “Acoustic Highway”\, “Hunter at Sunrise”\, and “Out of the Box” and received the title of “Album of the Year” by Barry Graham of NPR’s “Acoustic Highway”. \nA year later Furlow went on to release the EP “Solo”\, which was a live-in-studio project recorded by Rob Ulsh at Master Sound Studios (Justin Timberlake\, Depeche Mode\, Gwen Stefani) in Virginia Beach (2017).

SUMMARY:Apollo Mighty
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 at the door \nPurchase tickets here \nApollo Mighty is an R&B/Soul artist based out of Chicago in the United States. Originally from Memphis\, TN\, from a young age Apollo had a strong passion for music. \n“Music was the first thing that I gave myself that gave itself back to me. There was just always something about the marriage of melody and emotion that captivated me. I can still remember jingles from when I was 3 because they had meaning to me. Discovering ways to create that relationship between word\, sound\, and emotion has always challenged and excited me. So much that I study it and am able to experiment. Music gives me a place to feel safe and free and playful. Creating music feels like alignment to me. It lifts me.” \nIn 2020\, Apollo released his EP project “Behavior” which amassed over 600\,000+ streams across platforms. “Behavior” was well received and reviewed by both critics and fans. It was featured on multiple official Spotify playlists; including “Fresh Finds” and “Fresh Finds: The Wave”\, Apple Music playlist “Future Hits”\, Youtube Music’s “RELEASED” and Tidal’s “New Suggested Tracks” and “New Albums” for R&B/Soul. More features included; KISS FM\, CS Magazine\, Raynbow Affair Magazine\, Sounds So Beautiful\, Alfitude\, Dynmk\, IndieShuffle\, h-wing\, CaesarLivenLoud\, Yellow & Black to name a few. \nHis previous releases “Solid Gold”\, “Forbidden Fruit” and “Let Go” have amassed hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify alone and have been featured on multiple official Spotify playlists such as “Fresh Finds” and “Fresh Finds: The Wave”. \nApollo has been performing live all over Chicago during the past two years\, and was featured on the Chicago daytime show “Windy City LIVE” in 2019 where he performed “Solid Gold”. During the pandemic he did a virtual LIVE performance for AudioTree. \nApollo describes his sound as alternative R&B with soulful southern notes and tones. \nMay 2021\, Apollo released his single a soulful\, chill R&B/Pop track called ‘SMILE’. Listen here. \nIn 2021\, Apollo released his mindfulness podcast ‘RIGHT NOW RIGHT HERE’. Apollo Mighty goes on a quest to find spiritual health through mental physical and emotional well-being. Apollo hopes to shed light on the struggles and success we all experience as people through the lens of creative minds\, lifting the veil and demystifying the creative process and showing artists as people. Sharing of practices of mindfulness and wisdom. In each episode he chats with top creatives in the industry and connects on topics centred around growth\, spirituality\, and mindfulness. Listen here. \nThis year\, Apollo released single “LMSY” featuring Kenny Flowers. Written about his own personal experience with love and relationships. This single will be the lead single from his ‘We built a rocket’ EP which is an analogy for working on a relationship and Apollo’s journey and experience. Learning how to love can feel like rocket science sometimes. It could blast into orbit just as much as it explodes before ever breaching the atmosphere. “We Built a Rocket” is Apollo’s most honest\, personal and vulnerable music yet giving him the opportunity to be more honest than he has ever been in any of his other music. This will be released October 2022.

SUMMARY:Bill Mize
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-winning guitarist Bill Mize in the Green Room. \nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30pm\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nGrammy-winning guitarist Bill Mize is a son of Tennessee\, and a fitting representative of his state’s rich musical heritage. His critically lauded fingerstyle compositions are fluid and intricate\, and their delivery masterful. One suspects an influential teacher\, and one would be right. “I received most of my musical education from a cheap Zenith radio\,” says Mize\, who as a child drifted off to sleep to the decidedly non-sleepy lullabyes emanating from Nashville’s WLAC and WSM and Knoxville’s WNOX. \nMaybe that’s why critics speak of his ability to “transport” the listener; the music itself has been transported. The links to his Tennessee roots are unmistakable\, but so are the elements of the far wider musical realm he inhabits\, and the mixture is as intoxicating as Tennessee moonshine. With a twist. \nBill is a past winner of the National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition at The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, Kansas. Guitar Player Magazine has labeled this event the “U.S. Open of guitar competitions.” Bill received a GRAMMY Award for his collaboration with musician and storyteller David Holt on the recording Stellaluna\, and has been featured on the popular guitar compilations “Windham Hill Guitar Sampler” by Windham Hill Records and “Masters of the Acoustic Guitar” by Narada Records. In 2009\, Bill’s music appeared in the Ken Burns documentary “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Mel Bay Productions transcribed Mize’s second CD\, “Tender Explorations\,” into a songbook\, and his original compositions have been transcribed for Fingerstyle Guitar and Acoustic Guitar magazines.

SUMMARY:Circuit des Yeux with Optic Sink
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Circuit des Yeux with Optic Sink in The Green Room. \nTICKETS: $20 advance | $25 at the door\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nPurchase Tickets Here \n“-io is brilliantly extravagant” \n – NPR\, 50 Best Albums of 2021 \n“Fohr explores every nuance in her voice\, soaring and diving to unplumbed depths” \n– The Washington Post \n“A stirring reflection on grief\, oblivion and acceptance\, the album sounds like a fearless free fall into the void.” \n– New York Times \nCircuit des Yeux’s 2021 album -io was ranked on NPR’s 50 Best Albums of 2021\, Pitchfork’s 100 Best Songs of 2021\, and The Wire’s Top 50 Releases of 2021\, among other best of 2021 year-end lists. \nHaley Fohr is a vocalist\, composer and singer-songwriter based in Chicago\, Illinois. Her musical endeavors focus around our human condition\, and her 10-year career as Circuit des Yeux has grown into one of America’s most successful efforts to connect the personal to the universal. \nShe is most distinctly identified by her 4-octave voice and unique style of 12-string guitar. Her mysterious “Jackie Lynn” project landed her on the cover of Wire Magazine in August of 2016. Her recent works include an Original Soundtrack for Charles Bryant’s silent film Salomé (1923)\, commissioned by Opera North\, and a critically acclaimed 2017 album Reaching For Indigo\, released on Drag City Records. \nCircuit des Yeux’s first studio album since 2017\, -io\, is her first for Matador Records. The sky over -io is Florida’s strange\, radiant orange. It’s a built environment\, unnatural\, made from concrete and glass\, with skyscrapers that stretch to the vanishing point as you gaze up at them. \nIt’s crumbling and suffocating\, a city perpetually on the brink of collapse\, where tension never topples over into catharsis\, where the heat never breaks. \nInside this world and its closed loop of time\, Fohr found herself able to begin moving again. “I was haunted by memories in the pandemic\,” she says. “As someone with PTSD\, memories are all twisted up inside of me in a way that doesn’t help my higher self. Making this album was once again an exercise of trying to relieve myself of some of that darkness in a way that music has always done for me.” \n

SUMMARY:Anika
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Anika\, the project of Berlin-based musician Annika Henderson\, in The Green Room. \nTICKETS: $15 in advance | $20 day of show \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnika — the project of Berlin-based musician Annika Henderson\, who is also a founding member of Exploded View — announces Change\, her first new album in over a decade. Her video for “Change” was directed by Sven Gutjahr\, who also directed the video for her recent single\, “Finger Pies.” The follow-up to cult favorite Anika (2010)\, Change is beautifully fraught. The intimacy of its creation and a palpable sense of global anxiety are seemingly baked into the album’s DNA. Spread across nine tracks\, the central feeling of the record is one of heightened frustration buoyed by guarded optimism. The songs offer skittering\, austere electronic backdrops reminiscent of classic Broadcast records or Hi Scores-era Boards of Canada\, playing them against Anika’s remarkable voice — Nico-esque\, beautifully plaintive\, and — in regard to the record’s subject matter — totally resolute. \nHaving worked collaboratively in the past with the likes of BEAK> and Exploded View\, Change was ultimately the product of necessity. After recording the initial ideas by herself at Berlin’s Klangbild Studios\, Anika was joined by Exploded View’s Martin Thulin\, who co-produced the album and played some live drums and bass. “This album had been planned for a little while\, and the circumstances of its inception were quite different to what had been expected\,” says Anika. “This colored the album quite significantly. The lyrics were all written there on the spot. It’s a vomit of emotions\, anxieties\, empowerment\, and of thoughts like — How can this go on? How can we go on?” \nRecorded at a time when literally everyone in the world was being forced to take stock\, rethink\, and reimagine their own place in the cosmos of things\, Anika provides the wisened perspective of an outsider. It’s a perspective that is not lost on the British ex- pat and former political journalist\, and despite the subject matter and the circumstances around its creation\, Change itself is ultimately a treatise on optimism. The title track presents the album’s message writ large: “I think we can change. We all have things to learn\, about ourselves and about each other.” To end the record on such a sanguine note might be one of Change’s most revolutionary gestures. \n“There’s a lot of stuff I want to change\,” says Anika. “Some things I sat down and decided last year\, I had to change about myself and my life. Sometimes it feels helpless\, because the things we want to change are so huge and out of our control. Starting with yourself is always a good place. I think we can change.”

Kyndle is the lead singer of the Memphis Ukulele Band and a graduate of the University of Memphis. Her voice and harmonies have quickly made her an in-demand singer both onstage and in-studio in the soul city. \nKyndle was living in Nashville when the pandemic hit\, and denied her performance outlet\, she dug deep\, and the songwriting that had always been on the sideline became her mission. Kyndle has been acclaimed for her singing since she’d first stood in front of an audience\, but through songwriting\, she discovered a new voice inside her. The result is a six-song sonic Polaroid of who she is at this moment. Kyndle Wylde’s self-titled debut EP\, released under Memphis International Records\, is out now.

His journey towards playing Jazz really took hold when he heard Ornette Coleman’s “The Shape of Jazz to Come” in High School. He found a mentor in his first upright bass teacher\, Michael Blanco. In Saint Louis he has worked often with Willie Akins\, Freddie Washington\, Denise Thymes\, Ptah Williams\, Erin Bode\, Dave Stone\, Adam Maness\, Peter Schlamb\, and Montez Coleman.
