From being featured in top music publications such as Rolling Stone and American Songwriter to performing as the opening act for 10-time-GRAMMY winner Chaka Khan on her first ever U.S. tour\, this Cincinnati-based\, independent artist captivates the hearts of all who hear her smoky\, jazz-infused\, genre-fluid voice. \nUsing the power of social media\, Emmaline kick-started her career in 2018 by sharing acoustic covers of popular songs and original material to her social media platforms (@emmalineofficial) where she now boasts nearly 500k followers. Emmaline shines on stage whether it be online or in person\, and has performed countless sold-out shows at some of the country’s most notable jazz clubs\, music venues\, and festivals. SUMMARY:Keia Johnson: Love is Reckless
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 5:30pm | Show begins at 6:00pm\nTickets: $25 advance | $30 at the door \nPurchase tickets here \nA show with some surprises and new music! Keia will take you through her catalogue and let you hear some new music before it’s available to the masses. This is a mature show\, as Keia will be more transparent than she ever has\, ages 21 and up strongly suggested. As she is transitioning into some other roles\, you don’t want to miss what may be one of her last live performances in Memphis. This will be an experience you won’t soon forget! \nKeia Johnson \nKeia was born in San Antonio\, TX but grew up all over the world in a military family. Keia listened to a wide range of artists. But it was the move to Memphis that helped her establish her sound and performance style. She has performed with some of the best talent Memphis has to offer\, while also building relationships with notable national names like The Bar-Kays and David Porter of Stax Records. \nIn college\, Keia was able to use her gift to secure scholarships and it was one competition in particular that began to shape her life. In 2003\, Keia made history by being crowned only the third African-American Miss ASU (Arkansas State University). The same university that Miss America 1990 Debbye Turner attended and was crowned the first African-American Miss ASU.  Keia went on to the Miss Arkansas Pageant where she was crowned Miss Congeniality\, a name that stuck with her for years to come. She graduated with a degree in Communications emphasis Radio/Television Broadcasting and a minor in Political Science. But the arts kept calling her name. \nYears later\, It was American Idol that served as the true catalyst for Keia to recognize who she was as an Artist and what she wanted to do with her career. The talent competition led her to Hollywood where “Miss Congeniality” wowed the judges for two seasons. Her audition performance of Celine Dion’s vocally rigorous “My Heart Will Go On” prompted guest judge and musical role model Mary J. Blige to declare: “She can sing!” Keia later went on to compete on Season 4 of “The Voice” as well\, but wasn’t chosen for a team. Her journey hasn’t been without its disappointments and derailments. But she can’t stop singing. \nSo sing she has — for everyone from former President Bill Clinton and former Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton to Writer/ProducerTyler Perry\, Singer Denise Williams and Author Eric Jerome Dickey. After jumping into the Independent film arena where her music was used on the soundtrack for the film “Lesson Before Love” (available on Hulu and at RedBox) Keia felt it was time to get back to the music. In June of 2011\, Keia released her first solo effort\, an EP; T.I.M.E. and followed up with several music videos. In early 2013 Keia received an Emmy for her PSA for the Memphis Music Foundation featuring her original song “Movin’ On” motivating her to release a full album which she did in April of 2014 called “Facets”. \nIn 2013\, Keia decided to do something she hadn’t done since high school; Act. Since then\, she has been cast locally in “The Color Purple” (ensemble 2013)\, Once On this Island (TiMoune 2014)\, “Hoodoo Love” (Toulou 2015) and “Simply Simone” (Nina 2015). She was nominated for an Ostrander Award for best Lead Actress in a Musical for “Simply Simone”. In 2016\, the world seemed to open up for Keia as she was selected for the legendary BB King Allstar band that travelled the world on Holland America Cruise lines singing Blues\, Rock and Roll\, Jazz\, Classic R&B and Soul. Back at home in Memphis\, she was awarded Actress of the Year award (2016) from the “Diversity on Stage & Film”  committee as well as being featured in a new independent film “Verge” that showcases local indie Artists from Memphis\, TN.

DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $20+\n\nPurchase tickets here\n\nRissi describes her work as “Southern soul\,” which is as deceptively simple as each of those words on its own. Pulling influences from country to jazz to folk to rock to pop\, Rissi’s sound is a rich combination of cultures and perspectives. After releasing her debut album in 2008\, she was featured in Ebony\, Rolling Stone and The Wall Street Journal and performing everywhere from the White House to the Grand Ole Opry. \n\nHer debut single\, “Country Girl\,” put an African-American woman at the top of Billboard’s Country chart for the first time in 20 years. Since that whirlwind beginning\, Rissi has left Nashville and re-centered in North Carolina\, writing and performing the songs that reflect her constant evolution. She has toured extensively across the country\, sharing stages with Taylor Swift\, The Eagles\, Chris Young\, Charley Crockett\, and many more. Rissi is now the host of the Apple Music Country show\, Color Me Country Radio with Rissi Palmer\, a Special Correspondent for CMT’s (Country Music Television) Hot 20 Countdown\, and is also among some of country music’s most notable stars being showcased in the Country Music Hall of Fame’s “American Currents: State of the Music” exhibition\, running through March 2022. Oh\, and she’s nominated for a GRAMMY this year! She’s also dedicated herself to uplifting the next generation of BIPOC country artists through the Color Me Country Artist Grant Fund.\n\nMinimum ticket price is $20 but you can name-your-own price above that if you’re feeling it. 100% of ticket revenue goes to our artists (you can see where any fees go in the check-out breakdown). Yep\, all of it. Folk All Yall is volunteer-run and subscriber-supported. Shows are presented in partnership with Crosstown Arts at The Green Room in Crosstown Concourse.

SUMMARY:Sofia Talvik
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Swedish Americana/Folk artist Sofia Talvik in the Green Room.  \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, August 6\, 2022\nDoors at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nSofia Talvik is a rare artist and an avid storyteller with a voice comparable to giants like Joni Mitchell\, or as the folk/Americana magazine No Depression said\, “A singer/songwriter who is able to evoke the essence of Laurel Canyon circa the ‘60s as expressed in the work of Joni Mitchell\, Judy Collins\, Buffy Sainte-Marie and others who were able to paint beautiful tapestries from words and music.” \nPrepare yourself for a unique and intimate evening\, not unlike the 70’s coffeehouses and speakeasies. You will be up close and personal with a world class act that has played big festivals like Lollapalooza and SxSW and opened for artists like Maria McKee and David Duchovny (X-files\, Californication). It is in this kind of setting where she can casually joke and communicate with the audience that her strength as a performer shines the most. \nHer delicate songs are performed in an intimate way\, showing off Sofia’s angelic voice enhanced only by a tasteful mix of harmonies and delays\, accompanied by the steady picking of her acoustic guitar and the rhythm section consisting of her own two feet\, bells and a stomp box. \nShe’s an experienced international touring artist that has toured through 47 U.S states\, many of the countries in Europe and far away places like New Zealand. \nSofia Talvik’s 8th studio album “Paws of a Bear” was released September 2019. The album is reflecting inwards instead of to her surroundings\, exploring thoughts about identity and home. The single “Take Me Home” has been charting on Folk and Americana radio charts in the U.S and Europe. \n“Paws of a Bear\, finds Talvik taking a more Americana-flavored approach — influenced by Jason Isbell\, Valerie June and others” – Billboard Magazine \n“This album is solid gold from start to finish” – Americana Highways \n“Talvik develops is of a similar tapestry to Joni Mitchell\, tapping into that same knack for soul-stirring clarity and resonance. Between\, however\, is something of a different nature. Open-air production sets the scene for an evocative and atmospheric release from the Swedish folk artist\, coming in the form of an upcoming album\, Paws of a Bear.” – PopMatters \n“Talvik’s voice is a thing of singular beauty.” – Goldmine Magazine

On the strength of an MTV video aired for the single “Boys Town\,” the record garnered airplay and modest chart success for his effort\, while creating the iconic regional anthem “Memphis Thing.” \nThe more reflective Work Songs for a New Moon\, that followed two years later on RCA\, showcased Jungklas’ nuanced blend of pop songwriting and Memphis style R&B. \nLee Froelich calls Rob’s songs “profane and poetic\, haunted by ghost and damnation” and the sentiments are echoed by the likes of Rolling Stones’ David Fricke who describes the sounds as “bloodied bottleneck guitar and choked prayer.”

SUMMARY:Memphissippi Sounds
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Memphissippi Sounds\, 2022 Blues Music Awards nominee for Best Emerging Artist\, in the Green Room on July 29\, 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $12 in advance | $15 at the door (plus fees) \n\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nOne fateful summer night in 2017\, the paths of two uniquely gifted and talented Memphis musicians aligned in a club on Beale Street. Cameron Kimbrough\, grandson of Junior Kimbrough and native of the famed Mississippi hill country\, brought his raw\, stripped-down rhythms from the fresh\, open air of Potts Camp\, MS\, to the crowded room. \nAs the audience took in Kimbrough’s beats from the drums\, they were blessed by the powerful and mesmerizing voice of Damion “Yella P” Pearson’s harmonica. Kimbrough had grown up hearing the blues from his grandfather’s juke joint\, and later taught himself to play. Yella P. was also self-taught on the harmonica\, first picking it up at age 13 and honing his style while listening to the blues on Beale Street. \nAn instant connection growing from their chance encounter\, they teamed up to form Memphissippi Sounds and immediately began creating a new sound. Their custom blend of North Mississippi hill country blues\, Memphis blues and soul\, rock\, pop\, and hip-hop was debuted at the New Daisy while opening up for guitar legend Eric Gales. \nSince then\, they’ve taken the Memphissippi Sound on the road to places such as Thacker Mountain Radio Hour in Oxford\, Clarksdale’s Juke Joint Festival\, and Little Rock’s Whitewater Tavern backing up Grammy-nominated local bluesman R.L. Boyce. Memphissippi Sounds has made local appearances at such venues as the Levitt Shell\, Radio Memphis\, and the Indie Memphis Film Festival. Between gigs\, they enjoy doing some old-school busking on South Main\, a throwback to the heyday of Memphis music. \nTheir album Welcome To The Land was released late in 2021 by Little Village to great critical and commercial acclaim\, and has ridden at the top of the radio charts since. The album has been nominated for the Best Emerging Artist Award in the annual Blues Music Awards in early May.

With comparisons to songwriters such as Ray LaMontagne and virtuoso guitar-players like Tommy Emmanuel\, Furlow eventually carved out a sound that became easily distinguishable by it’s marriage of complex guitar work and warm\, home-spun lyrics. From the haunting melodies in “Evergreen” to the foot-tapping groove of “Cherokee Lake” Dustin is an ambassador of dynamic control on stage. In 2019 he played over 200 shows\, many with Harp-guitarist and International Fingerstyle-Guitar Champion Matt Thomas. \nIn April 2021 Dustin was announced as the winner of Scottish luthier Taran Guitars’ “Young Player Bursary” award. \nIn February 2017\, he received the Veer Magazine Music Award for “Best Acoustic/Folk Artist” in the Southeastern Virginia area. That year he also received nominations for “Song of the Year” (The Garden)\, and “Album of the Year” (The Sound That You Call Home). \nIn 2016\, Furlow released the full-length “The Sound That You Call Home”\, which has enjoyed airplay on NPR radio’s “Acoustic Highway”\, “Hunter at Sunrise”\, and “Out of the Box” and received the title of “Album of the Year” by Barry Graham of NPR’s “Acoustic Highway”. \nA year later Furlow went on to release the EP “Solo”\, which was a live-in-studio project recorded by Rob Ulsh at Master Sound Studios (Justin Timberlake\, Depeche Mode\, Gwen Stefani) in Virginia Beach (2017).

SUMMARY:Apollo Mighty
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 at the door \nPurchase tickets here \nApollo Mighty is an R&B/Soul artist based out of Chicago in the United States. Originally from Memphis\, TN\, from a young age Apollo had a strong passion for music. \n“Music was the first thing that I gave myself that gave itself back to me. There was just always something about the marriage of melody and emotion that captivated me. I can still remember jingles from when I was 3 because they had meaning to me. Discovering ways to create that relationship between word\, sound\, and emotion has always challenged and excited me. So much that I study it and am able to experiment. Music gives me a place to feel safe and free and playful. Creating music feels like alignment to me. It lifts me.” \nIn 2020\, Apollo released his EP project “Behavior” which amassed over 600\,000+ streams across platforms. “Behavior” was well received and reviewed by both critics and fans. It was featured on multiple official Spotify playlists; including “Fresh Finds” and “Fresh Finds: The Wave”\, Apple Music playlist “Future Hits”\, Youtube Music’s “RELEASED” and Tidal’s “New Suggested Tracks” and “New Albums” for R&B/Soul. More features included; KISS FM\, CS Magazine\, Raynbow Affair Magazine\, Sounds So Beautiful\, Alfitude\, Dynmk\, IndieShuffle\, h-wing\, CaesarLivenLoud\, Yellow & Black to name a few. \nHis previous releases “Solid Gold”\, “Forbidden Fruit” and “Let Go” have amassed hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify alone and have been featured on multiple official Spotify playlists such as “Fresh Finds” and “Fresh Finds: The Wave”. \nApollo has been performing live all over Chicago during the past two years\, and was featured on the Chicago daytime show “Windy City LIVE” in 2019 where he performed “Solid Gold”. During the pandemic he did a virtual LIVE performance for AudioTree. \nApollo describes his sound as alternative R&B with soulful southern notes and tones. \nMay 2021\, Apollo released his single a soulful\, chill R&B/Pop track called ‘SMILE’. Listen here. \nIn 2021\, Apollo released his mindfulness podcast ‘RIGHT NOW RIGHT HERE’. Apollo Mighty goes on a quest to find spiritual health through mental physical and emotional well-being. Apollo hopes to shed light on the struggles and success we all experience as people through the lens of creative minds\, lifting the veil and demystifying the creative process and showing artists as people. Sharing of practices of mindfulness and wisdom. In each episode he chats with top creatives in the industry and connects on topics centred around growth\, spirituality\, and mindfulness. Listen here. \nThis year\, Apollo released single “LMSY” featuring Kenny Flowers. Written about his own personal experience with love and relationships. This single will be the lead single from his ‘We built a rocket’ EP which is an analogy for working on a relationship and Apollo’s journey and experience. Learning how to love can feel like rocket science sometimes. It could blast into orbit just as much as it explodes before ever breaching the atmosphere. “We Built a Rocket” is Apollo’s most honest\, personal and vulnerable music yet giving him the opportunity to be more honest than he has ever been in any of his other music. This will be released October 2022.

SUMMARY:Bill Mize
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-winning guitarist Bill Mize in the Green Room. \nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30pm\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nGrammy-winning guitarist Bill Mize is a son of Tennessee\, and a fitting representative of his state’s rich musical heritage. His critically lauded fingerstyle compositions are fluid and intricate\, and their delivery masterful. One suspects an influential teacher\, and one would be right. “I received most of my musical education from a cheap Zenith radio\,” says Mize\, who as a child drifted off to sleep to the decidedly non-sleepy lullabyes emanating from Nashville’s WLAC and WSM and Knoxville’s WNOX. \nMaybe that’s why critics speak of his ability to “transport” the listener; the music itself has been transported. The links to his Tennessee roots are unmistakable\, but so are the elements of the far wider musical realm he inhabits\, and the mixture is as intoxicating as Tennessee moonshine. With a twist. \nBill is a past winner of the National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition at The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, Kansas. Guitar Player Magazine has labeled this event the “U.S. Open of guitar competitions.” Bill received a GRAMMY Award for his collaboration with musician and storyteller David Holt on the recording Stellaluna\, and has been featured on the popular guitar compilations “Windham Hill Guitar Sampler” by Windham Hill Records and “Masters of the Acoustic Guitar” by Narada Records. In 2009\, Bill’s music appeared in the Ken Burns documentary “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Mel Bay Productions transcribed Mize’s second CD\, “Tender Explorations\,” into a songbook\, and his original compositions have been transcribed for Fingerstyle Guitar and Acoustic Guitar magazines.
