SUMMARY:Ed Cherry with The Ted Ludwig Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room\nTuesday\, November 15\, 2022\nDoors at 7 p.m. | Show at 7:30 p.m.\n$20 door | $15 in advance | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“An expressive instrumentalist\, Cherry has a hip\, melodic approach that is a refreshing contrast to guitarists who frequently resort to playing ‘finger music’\, the execution of rapid streams of notes that serve no musical purpose other than to fill space” – Jim Ferguson: Jazztimes – 06/02 \nBorn in New Haven\, Connecticut\, Ed moved to New York in 1978 to play guitar with Dizzy Gillespie from 1978 to 1992 performing in Gillespie’s quartet\, big band and with The United Nation Orchestra which recorded the Grammy Award-winning Live at Royal Festival Hall (Enja). Gillespie died in 1993\, and Cherry released his first recording as a leader\, ‘First Take’ (Groovin’ High). That same year\, Ed recorded with Paquito D’Riveras’ small group which recorded “Havana Cafe” (Chesky Records). Ed also worked with composer/saxophonist Henry Threadgill for two years and recorded three cds with Henry’s ‘Very Very Circus’ group. \nIn 1995\, Cherry released his second project as a solo artist\, entitled A Second Look (Groovin’ High Records). During that same period Ed worked with Hammond organist John Patton recording three critically acclaimed CDs with Patton’s quartet — ‘Blue Planet Man’\, ‘Minor Swing’ and ‘This ones for Jah’ (DIW). From 1997 to 1998\, Cherry worked in Roy Hargrove’s “Crisol” Latin jazz band\, which performed in Havana\, Cuba. During this same period\, he also worked with baritone saxophonist\, Hamiett Bluiett\, recording Bluiett’s CD ‘With Eyes Wide Open’ on Justin-Time records. In 2001\, Cherry toured Europe for the first time with his own group. He also released his CD\, ‘The Spirit Speaks’ on the Canadian Justin Time Records label\, inspired by the great jazz organist Jimmy Smith with whom he had also recently worked. Ed was asked to perform at the ‘Vodaphone Madarao Jazz festival’ in 2002 in Madarao\, Japan\, with his quartet featuring trumpeter Jon Faddis. \nMore recently\, Ed toured with the great Hammond organist Dr. Lonnie Smith\, recording one critically acclaimed CD\, ‘In The Beginning’ on Pilgrimage Records in 2012. \nCurrently Ed has a brand new second recording released on Posi-Tone Records. (‘It’s All Good’ his first release in 2012 for Posi-Tone stayed in the JazzWeek charts for three months) His second recording for the label is titled “Soul Tree” ( release date February 19\, 2016 ) featuring Kyle Koehler on Hammond B3 organ and drummer Anwar Marshall. \nEd continues to work nationally and internationally ; concerts\, workshops\, jazz clubs.

SUMMARY:Frog Squad Plays Horace Silver
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Frog Squad in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nThe Green Room\nFriday\, November 11\, 2022\nDoors at 7PM | Show at 7:30PM\nTickets $15 | $12 in advance \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nFrog Squad is an outlet for creative expression and sound exploration based in Memphis\, Tennessee. Their songs pull heavily on improvisation within loose structures\, creating a psychedelic\, avant-garde jazz sound. \nThe group curates and arranges songs from artists such as Thelonious Monk\, Erik Satie\, and Horace Silver\, and bandleader David Collins composes eclectic\, original music. Overall\, Frog Squad gently defies the standards of what defines “good music” by composing song templates with experimental elements. In autumn of 2019\, Frog Squad released Solar System in Peabody\, a full-length work funded by the UrbanArts Commission. The Memphis Flyer called it “one of the most incredible pieces of music that came across our threshold this year.”

SUMMARY:The Chills’ Soft Bomb 30th Anniversary Tour with Unwed Sailor and Ibex Clone
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents The Chills with Unwed Sailor and Ibex Clone in collaboration with Goner Records. \n\nDoors at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $20 \nPurchase tickets here \nOriginally released in 1992\, The Chills’ third album Soft Bomb is often stated as their finest hour. \nIn 2022\, as their monumental record approaches its 30th Anniversary\, The Chills will be heading to the US for a North American tour that sees them performing a three decade career spanning set. This milestone tour will see The Chills perform music from 1992-2022\, it will also include music from their most recent album Scatterbrain which they’ll be touring in the US for the first time since its release. \nA conceptual classic that embraces styles and genres\, Soft Bomb is an eclectic slow cooked musical stew\, rich and rewarding from the much-loved storytelling songwriter Martin Phillipps. It features contributions from giants of contemporary American music including Van Dyke Parks and ex dB’s Peter Holsapple as collaborators. \nMartin Phillipps (Guitar/Vox) \nJames Dickson (Bass/Backing Vocals) \nTodd Knudson(Drums/Backing Vocals) \nErica Scally (Guitar/Keyboards/Violin/Backing Vocals) \nOli Wilson(Keyboards/Backing Vocals) \nUnwed Sailor \nThe journey of Unwed Sailor began in Seattle\, WA in 1998\, shortly after Johnathon Ford departed critically praised bands Roadside Monument and Pedro the Lion. While working within those projects\, Ford began writing instrumental music after listening to Tortoise\, Pullman\, and seeing bands like Physics perform live. After recruiting Dave Bazan (Pedro the Lion)\, Casey Wescott (Fleet Foxes)\, and Melissa Palladino (Danielson Famile) to play on the now classic Firecracker EP\, Unwed Sailor was born. Two decades and seventeen releases later\, Ford has continued to rely on the band as a device for personal exploration and emotive narration. Unwed Sailor now joins forces with Spartan Records for the release of their latest moody and cinematic journey\, Truth or Consequences\, a sonic examination of particular memories or moments in Johnathon Ford’s life\, with each song serving as a unique snapshot of an overarching narrative. Truth or Consequences is shaped around familiar musical DNA. Heavily present\, driving\, and stacked bass lines; wandering and evolving song structures; soaring crescendos and moody diminuendos; and\, of course\, a gripping sense of sonic storytelling.

Masks are encouraged at this event. \n\nR Jason Rawlings is a filmmaker and visual artist residing and working in Memphis\, Tennessee. SUMMARY:Mike Dowling
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-nominated American roots guitarist Mike Dowling in the Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 21\, 2022\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm \nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of the show\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nWhen the late\, great Vassar Clements heard Mike Dowling play guitar back in 1975 he did the sensible thing. He hired him. Mike was the guitarist in Vassar’s first touring band and can be heard on his GRAMMY-nominated “Nashville Jam”. Clements called him simply\, “One of the finest guitarists there is\, anywhere.”Echoing that sentiment is an ever-growing chorus of music critics\, guitar students\, and acoustic music fans from throughout the world. \nMike digs deep into the musical bag of American roots guitar\, favoring the melodic Piedmont style of acoustic blues masters like Mississippi John Hurt and slide great Tampa Red. But Mike can’t be pigeonholed as a blues player\, or even as a fingerstylist. He’s far too versatile for that. From bottleneck blues to vintage jazz and much more in between\, Mike’s musicality\, depth\, and mastery of the instrument translates fluently to flattop\, archtop\, and resonator guitars alike. \nMike grew up in central Wisconsin and early in his career in the midwest caught the ear of jazz violin great Joe Venuti and mandolinist Jethro Burns. In the 1970’s\, in addition to touring with Clements\, he worked and recorded with Burns and Venuti in Chicago and in between jobs took time off to move to California when he had the opportunity to study with the late\, great George Barnes. Barnes had been “the” session guy for many years\, recording with everyone from Big Bill Broonzy to Tony Bennett. “I was very fortunate to be able to spend some time with him”\, Mike says. ” He was so tasteful\, so rhythmic. He set the bar very high for me and he continues to be an inspiration.”

SUMMARY:She’Chinah and Friends
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022 \nDoors open at 7PM | Show begins at 7:30PM \nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nMemphis native She’Chinah’s love for music has roots deeper than she can remember. As a child\, she sang with her church choir\, and music has continued to soothe her throughout her life. “I have no idea how\,” she says\, “but when I sing the frustration I get with being misunderstood and unheard completely goes away and I am soothed. Music loved me first really\, so I fell for it back.” \nWhen she was young\, she was forbidden to listen to even the faintest\, briefest note of secular music\, and she didn’t find her own voice until years later. As a senior in high school\, She’Chinah began writing songs\, and in college at the University of Memphis\, she recorded features for other musicians. \nInspired by her entrepreneurial parents\, She’Chinah decided to take her God-given talent and step into the spotlight. Originating from a musically inclined family\, her voice has finally found its place. She’Chinah uses her music to face reality\, and the free-spirited singer prides herself on making authentic and relatable music. Her debut EP\, Solitaire\, was released in 2017. Now\, after moving to LA and experiencing some life\, She’Chinah is preparing to share her sophomore EP this fall.

SUMMARY:Shai Maestro Quartet + Strings
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Theater\nFriday\, September 30\, 2022\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 8pm\nTickets: $30 in advance | $35 day of the show \nPurchase tickets here \n“Expressions of joy\, introspective thoughts and heightened intensity all come to the fore” – Downbeat Magazine \n“His piano style fits into a particular modern tradition\, one that combines ultra-clean classical technique with a strong interest in repetitive\, almost looping figures and romantic melodies” – Stereogum \nShai Maestro (1987) is one of the most promising and talented pianists of his generation. Since his debut with his own trio in 2011\, Shai has shaped a strong and unique personal identity and has portrayed an incredible musical fluidity\, making him and his band one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz today. \n2018 marked an important year for Shai\, signing with major jazz label ECM and recording his first album The Dream Thief there\, featuring his trio\, but also him as a solo-pianist. Introspective\, lyrical\, virtuosic and differentiated. In its review of The Dream Thief\, All About Jazz spoke of “a searching lyrical atmosphere\, emotional eloquence and communal virtuosity that serves the music.” All of which also applies to Human\, Shai’s latest release on ECM\, where Maestro’s outgoing\, highly-communicative band with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder becomes a quartet with the inspired addition of US trumpeter Philip Dizack. Shai’s expansive pianism is well-matched by Dizack’s alert\, quick-thinking approach to improvising. And\, as ever\, Maestro is taking the music forward while also respecting its sense of tradition. Human was recorded at Studios la Buissonne in the South of France in February 2020\, and produced by Manfred Eicher. \nShai Maestro began playing classical piano at age five and graduated with honors from the Thelma Yell in High School of Performing Arts in Givataim\, Israel. After winning the National Jazz Ensembles Competition “Jazz Signs” in 2002 and 2003 and receiving excellency scholarships 2004-2010 from the America-Israel Cultural Fund for jazz piano\, Maestro attended Berklee College of Music’s Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston\, where he was awarded a full scholarship to attend Berklee full-time—an offer Maestro ultimately declined. \nMaestro’s intuitions proved right: just a few weeks later\, he received a phone call from bassist Avishai Cohen\, known for his long-time collaboration with Chick Corea as well as for his successful band-leading career. The bassist called to invite Maestro to join the Avishai Cohen Trio with drummer Mark Guiliana. Maestro recorded four albums with the Avishai Cohen Trio\, including two on Blue Note Records: Gently Disturbed (2008)\, Sensitive Hours (2008)\, Aurora (2009)\, and Seven Seas (2011). The trio toured the world and played at some of the world’s most renowned venues and festivals. \nIn July 2010\, Maestro formed his own trio and just a few months later\, recorded their well-received first album\, Shai Maestro Trio\, for the French label Laborie Jazz. The trio began an intense schedule of touring the world\, playing up to 80 concerts a year and sharing stages with groups led by Chick Corea\, Tigran Hamasyan\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Diana Krall. In 2012\, the trio released their second album for Laborie Jazz\, entitled The Road to Ithaca\, making an even more personal and intimate statement\, going back to the essence of their being: unedited and raw. \nFollowing that line of thought\, Shai released recent albums Untold Stories and The Stone Skippe‘ in October 2014 and November 2016. Listeners and the media outlets alike\, including DownBeat Magazine\, NPR\, BBC\, JazzFM\, TSF\, and WBGO’s The Checkout\, received the albums with critical acclaim. With these albums\, Maestro entered a new phase in his artistry: taking time\, fearing less\, daring more\, and allowing the music to unfold organically\, more than ever. Especially live\, the natural developments made the trio one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz. The past few years\, the trio has performed at the most renown stages\, venues and festivals worldwide. \nBesides his trio\, Maestro recorded on vocalist Theo Bleckmann’s album Elegy. Maestro has also received critical acclaim appearing on Mark Guiliana’s Jazz Quartet’s debut album Family First (2015). Most recently\, Shai recorded on saxophonist Ben Wendel’s album High Heart (Edition Records\, 2020). \nWithin the past couple of years\, Shai reached two important career milestones: he signed with Sony / ATV Music Publishing and was invited to perform with Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Keitaro Harada\, at Tokyo Metropolitan Theater. The program consisted of Miho Hazama’s first piano concerto as well as Shai’s original music.

SUMMARY:The Evergreen Sessions: Hosted by Brandon Blvd
DESCRIPTION:Brandon Blvd hosts The Evergreen Sessions in the Green Room\, emphasizing independent/underground artists locally and beyond. Featuring special guests Mai Ty\, Idaly Maceano\, Cadillac Jack\, and Virghost and the Saturday Sunset band. \n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, September 23\, 2022\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm \nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nBrandon Love Jackson (born April 5\, 1991)\, known professionally as Brandon Blvd\, is an American Hip-Hop artist from Memphis\, Tennessee. In 2020\, he released his most recent EP Safer at Home to the public which yielded support and allowed him to begin generating local recognition. \nAs a former Crosstown Arts resident artist\, Brandon was able to actively collaborate with artists from different walks\, backgrounds\, and practices. This inspired him to explore the creation of similar art spaces in collaboration with Crosstown Arts in order to continue the sharing of ideas\, vibes\, and perspectives through music. As an artist and Memphis native\, Brandon hopes that the Evergreen Sessions will allow such environments to take place for the foreseeable future. \nIn paying homage to Memphis’ Historic Evergreen district in mind\, the “Evergreen Sessions” seeks to serve as a quarterly showcase of musical talents from a wide scale of artists with various backgrounds\, and perspectives. This will be the first session of hopefully many more to come that sheds light and emphasizes independent/underground artists locally and beyond. Although there’s a focus on shining light on underground/independent Hip Hop & R&B artists\, the Evergreen Sessions seeks to create an all-inclusive space of collaboration for all musical creatives and genres.

SUMMARY:Fula Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $20 advance | $25 at the door \nPurchase tickets here \nFula Brothers are a burst of unbridled creative musicianship and happy making. A high spirited meeting of veteran performers from West Africa and America\, each with a history of innovation and collaboration with some of the beloved musicians of these cultures. Together they weave West African hunter’s harp\, fingerstyle guitar\, drums\, vocals\, and a bounty of improvisation into an ecstatic groove based dialogue which the heart – and the feet – cannot resist. \nMamadou Sidibe \nMaster kamale ngoni player\, Mamadou Sidibe\, is from the Wassoulou Region of Mali\, West Africa. Twenty-five years ago\, Mamadou played a groundbreaking role in the transformation of this region’s music from its origins in hunters’ sacred melodies – played on six string donso ngoni (hunter’s harps) – to a music of philosophical observations\, politics\, and daily life. Mamadou was one of the first to expand the instrument’s range with two extra strings\, creating the popular kamale ngoni. He has recently enhanced the kamale ngoni even further by devising 10 and 12-stringed instruments. \nMamadou\, with artists Coumba Sidibe\, Oumou Sangare and Ramata Diakite\, spread the new sounds through recordings and performances in Europe\, Africa and the United States. Not only is Mamadou an award-winning musician and master of the kamale ngoni\, he is accomplished on several other African instruments as well. \n“At the center of his music is the same sensibility that you’ll find in Muddy Waters: a sense of music as a tool for the re-creation of everyday life into something special\, even magical.” ~ Stylus \nWalter Strauss \nFingerstyle guitarist Walter Strauss’s multi-layered style draws on American roots\, jazz\, classical\, and cultural guitar traditions – but what makes his playing utterly unique is how it is informed by other global stringed instruments. He has delved deep into the harp traditions of West Africa\, integrating elements of their richly layered styles and rhythmic sensibilities with his own\, and rendering traditional pieces on the guitar. Walter has collaborated with revered practitioners of the kora (the 21-stringed West African harp) and with early kamale ngoni (hunter’s harp) innovator Mamadou Sidibe. Malian kora legend Toumani Diabate calls Walter’s guitar rendering of the music of the kora “inspirational”\, and proposed Walter’s collaboration with his son\, Sidiki Diabate\, a West African star in his own right. \nIn addition to his solo CDs and performances across the US & UK\, Walter’s collaborations have spanned an impressive range of musicians\, from maverick multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven and Grammy-winning Malian kora player Mamadou Diabate to Scottish fiddler Johnny Hardie and Grammy-nominated guitar maestro Alex de Grassi. He has performed internationally at venues like the Kennedy Center\, the Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland\, and Le Diplomate in Bamako\, Mali. Recently\, he created music for the Ken Burns documentary film “Defying the Nazis.” \n“A many-layered\, multi-textured\, one-man folk festival” ~ Maverick Magazine

SUMMARY:Folk All Y'all presents Grace Pettis
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $20+\n\nPurchase tickets here\n \nGrace epitomizes the term singer/songwriter. As a singer\, her voice is both powerful and beautiful\, and she uses it like a fine arts painter to color and craft her songs. American Songwriter Magazine wrote “As a decorated songwriter\, Pettis blurs the lines between country\, Americana and folk. Her soulful delivery of calculated lyric lines helps her tell stories for all generations.” Her songs have been recorded by many esteemed artists\, including Sara Hickman and Ruthie Foster. For Grace\, who has been characterized as “a little bit folk\, a little bit country/Americana\, and a whole lot of soul\,” 2020 had many silver linings. She signed with MPress Records\, released three critically acclaimed singles — “Landon\,” “White Noise\,” and “Drop Another Pin\,” — and recorded Working Woman in Nashville employing an all-female/non-binary creative team.\n\n \n\nMinimum ticket price is $20 but you can name-your-own price above that if you’re feeling it. 100% of ticket revenue goes to our artists (you can see where any fees go in the check-out breakdown). Yep\, all of it. Folk All Yall is volunteer-run and subscriber-supported. SUMMARY:An Evening with Elizabeth King: The Sacred Soul Queen of Memphis
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are now sold out\, but a limited number of tickets will be for sale at the door beginning at 7PM. \nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPurchase tickets here \nElizabeth King recorded her first single in 1970\, and if all had gone as planned\, she would have made her first album a few years later. Instead\, it took another half century for King to release her 2021 album Living In The Last Days\, which captured King at the height of her powers\, with the intervening decades only serving to stoke the flames of one of the most memorable voices in modern gospel music. Now Elizabeth is back with yet another collection of offerings\, each more fiery than the last. I Got a Love is a testament to her dedication to God\, her family and to her craft. \nMost of the material on I Got a Love was drawn from pioneering 70s gospel DJ/producer Juan D. Shipp’s D-Vine Spirituals Records catalog. Elizabeth was the flagship artist on the label and her early recordings are part of Bible & Tire’s ongoing D-Vine Spirituals reissue series including their latest compilations Sacred Soul: The D-Vine Spirituals Records Story Volume 1 and 2. \nShipp\, an 83 year old producer\, DJ and longtime manager of Elizabeth\, didn’t miss the chance to be back in the studio with Elizabeth\, egging her on. This 60 year old relationship has flourished as the recordings indicate. Once the album was thought to have been completed\, Watson had one more trick up his sleeve. He enlisted Mississippi rhythm & blues shaman Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers\, Buddy Guy\, Andrew Bird) to produce one more cut for the record. \nI Got A Love shows a different side of King. A more raw and vibrant side. The songs have more energy\, more stamina and drive harder than her previous release without compromising the integrity of King’s glorious voice and personality. It’s as if Elizabeth was just getting warmed up with her 2021 album Living In the Last Days and now the stage is set with this new offering. \nThe true concept of sacred soul can be found in earnest on tracks like “I Need The Lord” and “My Robe\,” which find King and company weaving that historic Memphis Soul Sound within the gospel framework\, always keen on delivering the sacred message. The real gem however\, can be found within the two and a half minute acapella performance of “Give Me Wings.” \nKing\, accompanied by her daughters in the round sing the words “As I go from door to door\, loved ones gone\, I won’t see ‘em down here no more. That makes me feel like flying away\, to be at rest.” Elizabeth’s delivery is personal. Not only does she sing for the love and loss of her late husband years ago\, but for all of the many who have gone on before her. I Got a Love is a testament to the many years Elizabeth has spent honing her craft and patiently waiting for her moment.
