Fellow artists have called her Hampton Roads’ best kept secret. It’s as though she’s a family recipe\, kept hidden until now. \nFellow musicians have described her sound as “country-neo-pop”. As a millennial\, it’s often quite difficult to pin her down to one particular genre. Her sound blends elements of North Indian classical\, noise/ambient electronics\, beat-driven psych and experimental dance pop. The work references her hybrid identity as a first-generation South Asian-American\, Sikh upbringing\, musical education\, as well as the chaos and spirituality of the landscapes of both Baltimore and urban India. \nPicking up her first sitar when she was twelve years old\, Dang has studied North Indian classical music (voice and sitar) in both New Delhi and Maryland\, and she also holds a degree in music technology & composition from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Following in the footsteps of artists like Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass\, she seeks to advance the sound of contemporary experimental\, pop\, and electronic music with the sounds of South Asia — through vocals and sitar\, ragas\, and sampling. And vice versa\, she aims to bring a broader sound palette to the legacy of South Asian music. These goals are a lifelong mission. To that end\, she has collaborated with Animal Collective\, William Cashion (of Future Islands)\, James Acaster\, Thor Harris — to name a few. She has provided tour support for Beach House\, black midi\, Grimes\, Lower Dens\, Florist and more.

DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, April 2\, 2023\nDoors 7PM | Show 7:30PM\nTickets: $25 | $20 in advance \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nTarta Relena was born in 2016 as a project of two singers to explore a cappella the sonorities of different styles of vocal music. Far from wanting to create a stamp of the traditional and to define the Mediterranean\, Tarta Relena wants to make its own a repertoire that goes from music of oral tradition to songs of author that in one way or another are related to the geographical area of the Mediterranean. \nTarta Relena sings from the perspective that what we call folklore is a living and moving repertoire. Therefore\, this reality is mouldable and can be reinterpreted with the instruments and sonorities that we now have within our reach. A key tool is the electronics with which they re-signify the melodies without leaving aside their origins. The study and knowledge of the path and the contexts that have given rise to these musics opens the doors of experimentation towards new meanings. In Tarta Relena’s work there is also a desire to play at blurring the concept of authorship\, bringing together anonymous traditional melodies and newly created songs under the same umbrella\, treating them in the same way and placing oral transmission\, the central element of tradition\, at the centre. \nOne of the strong points of the project is the complexity in simplicity and the maximum expression with the minimum of elements. The repertoire work brings together the resources of different vocal techniques (flamenco\, lyrical\, traditional\, jazz…)\, allowing a vast exploration of the possibilities of the voice. \nIn January 2019 Tarta Relena released her first album entitled Ora Pro Nobis (The Indian Runners\, 2019)\, winner of the Enderrock Critics’ Prize for the best folk album of 2019\, which consists of eight a cappella songs with a subtle presence of electronics. In April 2020\, during their confinement\, they released their second work\, Intercede Pro Nobis (The Indian Runners\, 2020)\, recognised by Rockdelux as the best national EP of 2020\, which emphasises the importance of the dialogue between voice and electronics. \nFiat Lux is the first full-length album and is an exploration of the concept of cyclicality through memory\, nostalgia and the evocation of feelings. The love poems written by Sappho of Lesbos or traditional Sephardic songs deal with the same emotional problems we face as individuals in 2021. Whether in archaic Greece\, in medieval times or in the midst of a global pandemic\, the self goes through the same processes of joy and pain\, closes them and begins again\, unable to avoid the course of things. Each poetic “I” illuminates itself in the midst of all the others to say what it has to say. \nThrough the stories of powerful and time-transcendent characters\, such as the Vingen Mary\, Hildegard of Bingen or the Paixtu tribe of women in Afghanistan\, the timelessness and transcendence of these voices and their discourses are explored\, revisited and sung from today’s perspective. \nTarta Relena are: \nMarta Torrella\, voice and electronics. \nHelena Ros\, voice and electronics.

By walking through her own shame\, she aims to allow the audience a chance to shine a light into their darkest corners\, and say to what lives there “I see you. I don’t hate you.” \nArtist Bio: \nNubia Yasin is a Memphis-born writer\, multidisciplinary artist\, and performer. She uses her experiences as a first generation Somali-American living in the South to tell stories about Black femmehood\, with an acute focus on themes related to shame. Her writing has been featured in projects for Netflix\, Apple Music\, and more. She’s performed in galleries and museums across the United states. \nHer first full collection of poetry\, The Blood and Body\, was published in August 2022 with HomieHousePress.

The concert will feature SMA’s jazz vocal ensemble\, Kind Of Blue\, named after the iconic 1959 Miles Davis album. The vocalists will be accompanied by a band of instrumentalists from the SMA Jazz Department. This tribute includes nods to the music of Ella Fitzgerald\, Nancy Wilson\, Nina Simone\, and even contemporary artists like Esperanza Spalding and Jamila Woods. The music will speak to the strength\, elegance\, innovation\, and devotion that women have embodied in the evolution across the diaspora of modern jazz music. \nThe Stax Music Academy jazz department\, under the direction of SMA alumnus Kori Wallace\, currently hosts three main ensembles. The premiere group\, The Legacy Quintet\, boldly carries the torch of Memphis’ rich musical history and features the program’s four top performing instrumentalists and top performing vocalist. Kind Of Blue\, our jazz vocal ensemble\, provides vocalists the opportunity to dive deeply into the nuances of the jazz language spoken by some of the greatest voices in American music. Lastly\, we have the newly minted Phineas Newborn Jazz Orchestra. The PNJO shines a light on one of the titans of Memphis jazz\, and creates the space for students to develop in large ensemble performance. The overall mission of the jazz department is to provide an environment for students to tap into the roots of Memphis music through its deep connection to jazz. Through that connection\, students are also able to develop in their approaches to the many styles synonymous with this great city.

This is acoustic Americana at its finest. \nThe Harley Kimbro Lewis album received glowing reviews during its 2022 release with a comprehensive UK tour. \nIn March 2023 the trio will tour the US performing only six dates exclusively in the Southeast. \nMARTIN HARLEY (UK based) has been making music and touring the world for over two decades. Exploring blues and roots in a style The Guardian referred to as Spellbinding\, Harley has released eight albums to date. His carbon neutral ‘Blues Gone Green’ bicycle tour of the UK took place in 2011. He participated in the ‘World’s Highest Gig’ in the Himalayas. His motorcycle adventures have taken him across Mali in search of the roots of blues music. He toured Northern India and Nepal on a vintage Royal Enfield and spent a year living in his 1977 Holden station wagon in Australia. Named for a rarely seen\, bell-shaped jellyfish discovered by Jacques Cousteau\, the group’s every note is inspired by that famous ocean explorer’s sense of discovery. But don’t assume the five veteran musicians create only chaos: they are as attuned to melodies and harmonies as they are to fine gradations of noise. What emerges with each extemporaneous performance can range from dark swirls of frenetic fury\, to interplanetary hard bop\, to sunlit\, ambient dreamscapes punctuated with snatches of folk song. \nThe diverse experience of the players sets the tone for their deep dives: \nDavid Collins is the composer and guitarist behind Frog Squad\, a Memphis group who have blended jazz improvisation with visionary music as disparate as that of Horace Silver and Erik Satie; he’s equally at home playing simple\, unfettered guitar lines or rocking\, effects-drenched rave ups. \nChad Fowler played alto saxophone with both Frank Lowe and George Cartwright in the 1990s\, and now teams up with the likes of William Parker\, Kidd Jordan\, Ivo Perelman\, Zoh Amba\, Matthew Shipp\, or Brian Blade for music released on the Mahakala Music label; in Deepstaria Enigmatica\, he also plays bass flute and an Otamatone portable synthesizer. \nKeyboardist Alex Greene first studied musique concrète and computer synthesis with composer Judy Klein in the 1980s\, before playing in a variety of Memphis groups ranging from Alex Chilton to Big Ass Truck to Reigning Sound\, not to mention over twenty years of work with New York composer Dave Soldier; now he improvises with multiple keyboards simultaneously\, including a vintage Roland Juno-106. \nSince completing his jazz studies at the University of Memphis in 2016\, drummer Jon Harrison has cast a wide stylistic net with the groups he’s joined\, which include the Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra\, Frog Squad\, Hope Calyburn’s Soul Scrimmage\, Joe Austin\, Roderick Duran\, PXLS\, and the Church Brothers. \nBassist Khari Wynn\, best known as the guitarist for hip hop sensations Public Enemy\, regularly tests more unorthodox waters with groups such as Energy Disciples\, often under the name Mysterioso Africano. \nTogether\, these five musos cohere with a surprising unity of purpose\, as their listening and playing gel into what often sound like prepared compositions. Sharing an uncanny telepathy\, they transport listeners to new worlds of musical possibility.

Her ground-breaking albums\, The Book of Ragas\, and its sequel\, The Book of Ragas vol. 2 have often elicited the response\, “I’ve never heard this type of sound before.” \nOne of the few female composers from India to perform work at Carnegie Hall\, Charu has lived in four continents\, and writes music that reflect her journey as both a traveler and her training as a classical music piano prodigy. She has been playing the piano since the age of five\, and performing since the age of nine\, and one of her best memories is winning an international piano competition at the age of 15. \nWhat started purely as an experiment with her “Book of Ragas” has turned into a niche that she is now increasingly becoming known for. Her latest album is RAGAS & WALTZES\, a first collaboration between her and Preservation Hall’s jazz drummer\, Joe Lastie. \nIn this album\, dedicated to her late father\, she explores European waltzes through her own jazz lens. The album also includes two ragas\, performed by guitarist Noshir Mody and flutes by Al Jewer. RAGAS & WALTZES has received a lot of praise from critics. JAZZIZ Magazine has praised its classic reinvention of the European waltz\, and All About Jazz said\, “These are all Suri originals\, with which she creates a mood that is a mix\, tune-by-tune\, of longing and solemnity\, then of a lilting and uplifting beauty\, segueing into tender reverence that shifts gear into a segment of lively swing before drifting back to loving respect. And that swing is surely inspired by New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s drummer\, Joe Lastie\, Jr.\, sitting in the recording session’s drummer’s chair.” \nBut she is no stranger to the art of the Songbook too (attribute this to her listening to numerous records of Bill Evans and Billie Holiday as a kid). “The New American Songbook” has garnered many awards\, including a “Band Single of the Year” crystal trophy for her song\, Bluesy\, awarded by the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) in 2021. \nCharu has performed at Lincoln Center and other prestigious concert halls around the world\, including St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Her late father\, Webster Williamson\, an avid amateur singer\, choir director\, and pillar of the St. Stephen’s Baptist Church music ministry\, introduced his children to both sacred music and the secular styles of greats like Louis Armstrong\, Nat King Cole\, and Lena Horne. With the encouragement of her mother\, Lillie Rivers Williamson\, Patrice followed in the footsteps of her elder sister\, Denise\, taking up the violin and making her debut at age four. From then on\, she was hooked on music and performing. \nA favorite of the Boston music scene\, Patrice’s sensitive ballad work and fluent scat style have garnered invitations to perform at the famed Blue Note Jazz club in New York City\, and with many well-known instrumentalists such as Danilo Perez\, Joe Lovano and Terri Lyne Carrington. As a Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music\, her work has taken her to Perugia\, Italy\, Seoul\, South Korea\, Peru and India\, where she performed with saxophonist Donald Harrison in the New Delhi Jazz Festival. \nHer independent recordings\, My Shining Hour and Free to Dream\, have received high praise from jazz critics around the country. In 2014 Patrice started The Ella Project\, a multi-faceted tribute leading up to Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday\, including a concert series\, biographical performance\, and recordings\, including Comes Love\, an album celebrating the collaboration between Fitzgerald and legendary guitarist Joe Pass. \nJENNA MCLEAN \nJenna McLean is a jazz vocalist and Lecturer in Music and Entertainment at the University of Memphis Lambuth in Jackson\, Tennessee. As an accomplished performer\, vocal technician\, songwriter\, and educator\, she finds her artistic drive in bringing new twists to timeless standards of the Great American Songbook as well as pop\, funk\, and soul tunes. With a love and devotion for jazz\, opera\, R&B\, and folk music\, she maintains the belief that all music is good music as long as it speaks to the soul and grooves. \nJenna was the 2019 winner of the Downbeat Student Music Awards Graduate Vocal Soloist Category\, and a 2019 recent recipient of the Pathways to Jazz Grant. She performs regularly at renowned Colorado Jazz Venues including Dazzle and Nocturne\, and has performed and presented multiple times at the Jazz Education Network conference and the Five Points Jazz Festival in Denver. She has had the pleasure of performing alongside renowned musicians such as Bobby McFerrin\, Aubrey Logan and the New York Voices\, and also performs regularly with incredible Denver-based jazz musicians such as Steve Kovalcheck\, Ben Markley\, Eric Gunnison\, Tom Amend\, Dawn Clement\, Annie Booth and others. \nDEBORAH SWINEY \nDeborah Swiney has definitely earned the title of a true chanteuse. Throughout her performance\, you get to enjoy a trip back to Harlem to experience the iconic era of Billie Holiday\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and Sarah Vaughn; you get to dance across the Great American Songbook; and you get to take a flight to Rio where you could close your eyes and imagine relaxing on a Copacabana or Ipanema beach. Being a Memphis native\, you might even get a splash of blues. \nIn a city that loves its blues\, rock\, jazz\, and gospel\, Deborah has carved out a niche uniquely her own. This is evident with her highly praised co-produced debut album\, I Remember Rio\, a Brazilian-inspired album with “Memphis-Soul seasoning” (All about Jazz). I Remember Rio is filled with classic Bossa Nova standards and tunes written by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim as well as Deborah Swiney’s “Bossa Nova Casanova” and guitarist\, Ed Finney’s title song\, “I Remember Rio”. The event is free and open to the public. \nSu-Yee Lin writes stories and poetry that grapple with issues of identity\, memory\, environment\, and mythology. Her work often lies on the border between the real and the strange\, and she is interested in the intersections between the surreal and the natural world. She was a Fulbright Fellow to China and has had work published in the Pushcart Prize anthology\, Tor.com\, Electric Literature\, Bennington Review\, Day One\, Nashville Review\, The Offing\, and other literary journals\, and short stories translated into Italian and Chinese. \nKeith S. Wilson is an Affrilachian Poet and a Cave Canem fellow. He is a recipient of an NEA Fellowship\, an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant\, and an Illinois Arts Council Agency Award\, and has received both a Kenyon Review Fellowship and a Stegner Fellowship. His book\, Fieldnotes on Ordinary Love (Copper Canyon)\, was recognized by the New York Times as a best new book of poetry. \nEdo Rosenblith (B. 1988 Tel Aviv\, Israel) received a BFA in painting in 2011 at the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Visual Art at Washington University-St. Louis in 2017. Edo is a compulsive draftsman who works in a variety of mediums: murals\, painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and book arts. \nKelsey Harrison’s sculptural work has been shown in institutions nationally including The Jewish Museum\, Abrons Art Center\, and The Knockdown Center in New York\, SOMArts in San Francisco\, The Sullivan Galleries in Chicago\, The College of William and Mary in Virginia\, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Utah Museum of Fine Art in Salt Lake City. Harrison received her BFA in Sculpture from Purchase College\, State University of New York and her MFA in Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Memphis. \nBrittney Boyd Bullock\, an artist working in fiber\, mixed-media\, and abstraction\, explores the tension between searching and finding\, obsession and order\, and lightness and darkness through two- and three-dimensional forms. Contemplative and personal\, the process-driven works interrogate anxiety and wonder using materials in a new way\, forcing her to make meaning in the arbitrary jumble. \nJennifer Sargent makes intricate drawings and handwoven tapestries. As an artist weaver she considers herself both a contemporary practitioner and a part of a longer continuum that is thousands of years old. This idea is both a comfort and a challenge. One of two elements is always present in Sargent’s work\, either story telling or the natural world (whether wild or domesticated). Sargent creates an abstracted sense of these ideas or experiences through the layering of pattern and color.

One of the most valuable aspects of country music is its versatility and diversity in sound. Country\, blues\, folk\, and Americana music often overlap or weave together — these artists explore all of those sounds and intersections. The Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to these genres. \nTae Lewis \nThe emerging country singer/songwriter Tae Lewis doesn’t sell short when it comes to his creation of country music. The North Carolina native started his roots by singing in his grandfather’s church at the age of 5. In 2016 he began to emerge in his own element of what he wanted to create for his audience as a country artist with one of his first singles “Good Luvin”. \n“Good Luvin” brought success in being placed in the hit sitcom Shameless\, which brought his artistry to a whole new level of people acknowledging who he really is. He is a scholar of Black American music\, speaking ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle\, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker\, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes\, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Each song Blount plays is chosen for a reason – because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. The more we learn about where we’ve been\, the better equipped we are to face the future – a future imagined by connecting Black tradition with the environmental crisis\, centering the questions\, “What would Black music sound like after climate change renders most of the world uninhabitable? What gods would this community praise\, and what stories would they tell?” The answers come through the bedrock of Blount’s voice\, channeling the ragged triumph of a people still standing after centuries of continuous confrontations with Death. \nMinimum ticket price is $20 but you can name-your-own price above that if you’re feeling it. 100% of ticket revenue goes to our artists (you can see where any fees go in the check-out breakdown). It’s a potent mix of blues\, gospel\, rock\, and\, in his words\, “dirty funk swampy grime\,” as overseen by producer and Bokanté bandmate Michael League (from the Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy). \nBrought up in the House of God Church in Perrine\, Florida\, Roosevelt built his “sacred steel” guitar prowess alongside his uncles and cousins in The Lee Boys\, known for their spirited\, soul-shaking live performances.
