SUMMARY:Sean McConnell & Garrison Starr Present: My Sister\, My Brother
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, May 3\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 day of show | $75 VIP \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nIf trust had a sound\, it’d be My Sister\, My Brother. \n“Sometimes you just immediately trust somebody––you’re at ease from the beginning\,” says Garrison Starr “You know they’ve got your back. It feels easy. I immediately felt that way with Sean.” \nGarrison is talking about Sean McConnell\, her musical partner in My Sister\, My Brother\, a new group with the kind of natural magic that only happens when kismet masquerades as coincidence. Individually\, they are independent solo artists known for smart songwriting and breathtaking vocals. Together\, their voices reach that rarefied air typically reserved for families: harmonies that twin and snake around each other to hypnotize and soothe. “When we started writing and especially when we started singing together\, it was like\, ‘Wow. This is not normal. This feels very natural\,’” Sean says. “It feels like singing with a sibling you’ve sung with for a long time. Very quickly\, it became a special collaboration.” \nThe two artists formed My Sister\, My Brother\, not because they’d planned to\, but because they had to. They first sat down to write during a songwriting retreat. They emerged with “Nothing Without You\,” a stunner with its heart on its sleeve. \nVIP: Early entry directly after sound check (6:30 pm). 15-20 minute Q&A with Garrison and Sean.

SUMMARY:Gareth Pearson (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Gareth Pearson in the Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, April 29\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \n“Gareth is fast becoming one of the world’s most renowned instrumental guitarists.” – Adam Walton (BBC Radio Wales) \n“I really respect Gareth’s abilities. He’s a great young man and a great ambassador for the acoustic guitar.” – Tommy Emmanuel \nGareth Pearson is referred to as “The Welsh Tornado” which is particularly appropriate\, seeing as this special talent combines fingerstyle pyrotechnics\, with explosive lead runs making Pearson one of the most exciting acoustic musicians gigging today. \nGareth has a distinctive style that can be heard through his creative and innovative arrangements which cover a wide spectrum of genres\, including country/folk/classical/pop/rock/jazz/swing and bluegrass music\, along with his own beautiful and often intricate original compositions. \nDrawing his playing style initially from influences such as Chet Atkins\, Merle Travis\, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel\, he has developed a style that is both inspiring and entertaining. \nWithin a year of taking up the guitar\, Gareth was opening for Tommy Emmanuel on his 2005 UK tour. It was in Cardiff where Tommy invited Gareth to play at the CAAS convention (Chet Atkins Appreciation Society) in Nashville\, Tennessee. \nLater that year\, Gareth was performing and touring alongside Ray Davies (The Kinks)\, John Renbourne\, and Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes. During the Southside Johnny tour\, Gareth was invited by Southside to be flown over to the USA to open for his annual New Years Eve concert at the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey. \nThe following year Gareth was invited by Tommy Emmanuel to be the support act for his UK tour\, following extensive UK supports to Jan Akkerman\, Andy McKee and appearing at numerous Folk Festivals and Guitar workshops including the Montreal Jazz Festival. \nWith appearances throughout Europe and a growing reputation\, Gareth was invited to perform at the 2008 Canadian Guitar Festival where he came to the attention of Candyrat Records. This lay the seed for Gareth to be the first UK guitarist to be signed by the label. On its release\, Gareth’s debut album “Urban Echoes Vol 1” was selected by Acoustic Guitar editors and frequent contributors as one of the “Essential Acoustic Albums of 2010”. \nWith appearances at the 2009 Montreal Guitar Festival\, USA and worldwide tours and guitar workshops\, Gareth’s reputation as a performer and teacher is constantly growing.

SUMMARY:Doug MacLeod
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Doug MacLeod in the Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, April 27\, 2023\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“Like all great blues men\, MacLeod lives his music\, and the songs are not just on the tips of his fingers and tongue\, they are one with his being.” – Blues Music Magazine \n“One of the great blues artists… Period !” – Jorma Kaukonen. \n“Doug MacLeod is one of the last and most iconic songwriters in blues that the contemporary scene can still offer.” – Macalle Blues – Italy. \nMacLeod is known for his superb songwriting\, guitar wizardry\, warm soulful vocals\, wit\, and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of a Doug MacLeod performance is his knack for storytelling\, bringing characters from the faceless to the legendary-to strikingly real life. \nDoug is a multiple Blues Music Award winner\, including the 2020 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist Of The Year and the 2018 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Album Of The Year ‘Break The Chain’. He was recently nominated for the 2023 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist Of The Year. \nIn March of 2022 he co-authored with Debra Schiff the blues murder mystery book MURDER AT THE CROSSROADS. In 2022 A SOUL TO CLAIM produced by Jim Gaines was released. It was named a Downbeat Magazine ‘Album Of The Year’ for 2022. In March 2023 RAW BLUES 1 EP was released on Sledgehammer Blues/ Valley Entertainment. \nDoug is an international touring artist who writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters and carries forward a valuable tradition. \nAs a youth\, Doug overcame abuse and a crippling stutter by turning to music. After picking up a guitar\, and singing — he found his voice. \nMacLeod’s playing landed him sideman gigs with George ‘Harmonica’ Smith\, Big Joe Turner\, Pee Wee Crayton\, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson\, Lowell Fulson\, and Big Mama Thornton. Over 30 years\, 22 studio albums\, several live records\, compilations\, a blues guitar instructional DVD\, and a live performance DVD\, MacLeod has consistently earned raves. \nHis songs have been covered by many artists including Albert King\, Albert Collins\, Joe Louis Walker and Eva Cassidy. MacLeod’s songs have been featured in many TV movies and the hit show In the Heat of the Night. August Wilson requested his soulful slide guitar playing in the Los Angeles opening of “Gem of the Ocean”. \nFrom 1999 to 2004 Doug hosted Nothin’ But The Blues\, a very popular weekend blues show on Los Angeles’ KLON-KKJZ. He has also been the voice for The Blues Showcase on Continental Airlines. For ten years he penned “Doug’s Back Porch\,” a regular feature column in Blues Revue Magazine in which he shared his humorous and insightful stories with thousands of readers. He is one of the four featured artists in the movie “Resonate: A Guitar Story”\, the feature documentary on the making of National Guitars. Like the old masters who taught him\, MacLeod’s music expresses life and times through an intangible\, elusive quality that may simply be a keen sense of what matters most. Doug’s music\, stories\, and philosophy provide a healing that has helped others overcome the hardships of their lives. \nDoug says the most important lessons he learned as a young musician came from Ernest Banks a one-eyed country bluesman from Toano\, VA. \n“Never play a note you don’t believe” and “Never write or sing about what you don’t know about.” \nAs Blues Hall Of Fame artist Pee Wee Crayton’s widow Esther once told Doug\, “You have a message and you’ll send that message mainly to the people who don’t go to church.” Amen.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Resident Artists Open Studio Night
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, April 14\, 2023\nTime: 6-9 pm\nAdmission: Free \nCrosstown Arts is proud to invite the Memphis community to visit the artist studios. Artists in residence will have their studios open on Friday\, April 14\, from 6 to 9 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nSu-Yee Lin writes stories and poetry that grapple with issues of identity\, memory\, environment\, and mythology. Her work often lies on the border between the real and the strange\, and she is interested in the intersections between the surreal and the natural world. She was a Fulbright Fellow to China and has had work published in the Pushcart Prize anthology\, Tor.com\, Electric Literature\, Bennington Review\, Day One\, Nashville Review\, The Offing\, and other literary journals\, and short stories translated into Italian and Chinese. \nKeith S. Wilson is an Affrilachian Poet and a Cave Canem fellow. He is a recipient of an NEA Fellowship\, an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant\, and an Illinois Arts Council Agency Award\, and has received both a Kenyon Review Fellowship and a Stegner Fellowship. His book\, Fieldnotes on Ordinary Love (Copper Canyon)\, was recognized by the New York Times as a best new book of poetry. \nEdo Rosenblith (B. 1988 Tel Aviv\, Israel) received a BFA in painting in 2011 at the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Visual Art at Washington University-St. Louis in 2017. Edo is a compulsive draftsman who works in a variety of mediums: murals\, painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and book arts. \nKelsey Harrison’s sculptural work has been shown in institutions nationally including The Jewish Museum\, Abrons Art Center\, and The Knockdown Center in New York\, SOMArts in San Francisco\, The Sullivan Galleries in Chicago\, The College of William and Mary in Virginia\, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Utah Museum of Fine Art in Salt Lake City. Harrison received her BFA in Sculpture from Purchase College\, State University of New York and her MFA in Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Memphis. \nApollo Mighty is a Memphis-born R&B/Soul artist. He uses his music to express his many selves\, embracing the extremes of his own personal ugliness and beauty — while also reflecting the world around him. He has worked extensively in the music scenes in Memphis and Chicago and his 2020 EP project Behavior amassed over 600k streams across platforms. \nJennifer Sargent makes intricate drawings and handwoven tapestries. As an artist weaver she considers herself both a contemporary practitioner and a part of a longer continuum that is thousands of years old. This idea is both a comfort and a challenge. One of two elements is always present in Sargent’s work\, either story telling or the natural world (whether wild or domesticated). Sargent creates an abstracted sense of these ideas or experiences through the layering of pattern and color.

SUMMARY:Xiu Xiu with The Pop Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Xiu Xiu with The Pop Ritual in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, April 12\, 2023\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 General Admission \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nXiu Xiu’s most recent work is a record of halves. \nAngela Seo sings on half of the record. Jamie Stewart sings on half of the record. \nHalf of the songs are experimental industrial. Half of the songs are experimental modern classical. Half of it is real. Half of it is imaginary. \nThe real songs attempt to turn the worst life has offered to five people the band is connected with into some kind of desperate shape that does something\, anything\, other than grind and brutalize their hearts and memory within these stunningly horrendous experiences. \nThe imaginary songs are an expansion and abstract exploration of the early rock and roll “Teen Tragedy” genre as jumping off point to decontaminate the band’s own overwhelming emotions in knowing and living with what has happened to these five people. \nWhat none of this record does and despite the oft repeated assertion\, what Xiu Xiu has never done\, is attempt to superficially shock the listener. Instead\, Xiu Xiu has spent twenty years grappling with how to process\, to be empathetic towards\, to disobey and to reorganize horror; there is no other word for it other than horror. \nThe motivation for writing Ignore Grief to be about a child who was sold into prostitution by his mother\, a junior high student who was kidnapped and murdered\, incessantly choosing alcohol and cocaine over one’s family\, becoming lost in the bleakest\, darkest aspects of cultish spirituality and committing suicide as means to escape and protest a life of violent sex work is because the members of Xiu Xiu themselves are deeply shocked. \nOld friend and new member David Kendrick (Sparks\, Devo\, Gleaming Spires) joins Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart through whatever this may be and whatever it may mean and why ever it may have occurred. The point of aesthetic examination is to see if there is any way to come out the other side or if there is even any reason. In either case there may not be but to simply turn away would be yet a further act of destruction. \n“I had now lost all confidence in myself\, doubted all men immeasurably\, and abandoned all hopes for the things of this world\, all joy\, all sympathy\, eternally. This was the truly decisive incident of my life. I had been split through the forehead between the eyebrows\, a wound that was to throb with pain whenever I came into contact with a human being.” – Osamu Dazai

SUMMARY:Willi Carlisle with Rachel Maxann
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Willi Carlisle with Rachel Maxann in the Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, April 9\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“Willi Carlisle speaks his truth.” – NPR Music \n“Willi Carlisle is just the kind of artist that Americana music needs.” – Paste Magazine \nWILLI CARLISLE is a poet and a folk singer for the people\, but his extraordinary gift for turning a phrase isn’t about high falutin’ pontificatin’; it’s about looking out for one another and connecting through our shared human condition. Born and raised on the Midwestern plains\, Carlisle is a product of the punk-to-folk music pipeline that’s long fueled frustrated young men looking to resist. \nAfter falling for the rich ballads and tunes of the Ozarks\, where he now lives\, he began examining the full spectrum of American musical history. This insatiable stylistic diversity is obvious in his wildly raucous live performances\, where songs range from sardonic trucker-ballads like “Vanlife” to the heartbreaking queer waltz “Life on the Fence\,” to an existential talkin’ blues about a panic attack in Walmart’s aisle five. \nWith guitar\, fiddle\, button-box\, banjo\, harmonicas\, rhythm-bones\, and Willi’s booming baritone\, this is bonafide populist folk music in the tradition of cowboys\, frontier fiddlers\, and tall-tale tellers. Carlisle recognizes that the only thing holding us back from greatness is each other. With a quick wit and big sing-alongs\, these folksongs bring us a step closer to breaking down our divides. \n“Willi Carlisle is an absolute force of nature. From the moment he walks on stage you can’t take your eyes off of him and the minute he opens his mouth you can’t help but hang on every word. Even if the songs weren’t there\, the showmanship alone would be worth the price of admission\, but the scary part is the songs are just as good as the stories.” — BJ Barham

DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, April 8\, 2023\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $20 (purchase tickets here) \nWith a voice like cinnamon and a pen like butter\, Roberta Lea is a rising artist\, ready to give the world a taste of what she’s made of. Fellow artists have called her Hampton Roads’ best kept secret. It’s as though she’s a family recipe\, kept hidden until now. \nFellow musicians have described her sound as “country-neo-pop”. As a millennial\, it’s often quite difficult to pin her down to one particular genre. Her influences range from 80s RnB legends like Roberta Flack\, Anita Baker and Sade\, to pop 90s girl-power players like Alanis Morissette\, Sheryl Crow\, Shania Twain and everything in between. \nWe had the pleasure of getting to know Roberta when she joined The Black Opry Revue in 2020 and we’re thrilled to welcome her back to celebrate her first full-length album\, Too Much of a Woman. \n  \nMinimum ticket price is $20 but you can name-your-own price above that if you’re feeling it. 100% of ticket revenue goes to our artists (you can see where any fees go in the check-out breakdown). Yep\, all of it. Folk All Y’all is volunteer-run and subscriber-supported. Shows are presented in partnership with Crosstown Arts at The Green Room in Crosstown Concourse. \nAbout The Green Room: Operated by Crosstown Arts\, The Green Room is committed to providing the best possible environment for the two most important components of a musical performance: the artists’ work and the audience’s listening experience. \nAbout Folk All Y’all: Intimate\, attentive performances by exceptional singer-songwriters\, proudly presented in Memphis\, Folk All Y’all is a public\, nonprofit listening room series supported by our pledges from our community.

SUMMARY:Ami Dang
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Ami Dang in the Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, April 6\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 advance | $25 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAmrita “Ami” Kaur Dang is a South Asian-American vocalist\, sitarist\, composer and producer from Baltimore. Her sound blends elements of North Indian classical\, noise/ambient electronics\, beat-driven psych and experimental dance pop. The work references her hybrid identity as a first-generation South Asian-American\, Sikh upbringing\, musical education\, as well as the chaos and spirituality of the landscapes of both Baltimore and urban India. \nPicking up her first sitar when she was twelve years old\, Dang has studied North Indian classical music (voice and sitar) in both New Delhi and Maryland\, and she also holds a degree in music technology & composition from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Following in the footsteps of artists like Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass\, she seeks to advance the sound of contemporary experimental\, pop\, and electronic music with the sounds of South Asia — through vocals and sitar\, ragas\, and sampling. And vice versa\, she aims to bring a broader sound palette to the legacy of South Asian music. These goals are a lifelong mission. To that end\, she has collaborated with Animal Collective\, William Cashion (of Future Islands)\, James Acaster\, Thor Harris — to name a few. She has provided tour support for Beach House\, black midi\, Grimes\, Lower Dens\, Florist and more.

SUMMARY:Tarta Relena
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, April 2\, 2023\nDoors 7PM | Show 7:30PM\nTickets: $25 | $20 in advance \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nTarta Relena was born in 2016 as a project of two singers to explore a cappella the sonorities of different styles of vocal music. Far from wanting to create a stamp of the traditional and to define the Mediterranean\, Tarta Relena wants to make its own a repertoire that goes from music of oral tradition to songs of author that in one way or another are related to the geographical area of the Mediterranean. \nTarta Relena sings from the perspective that what we call folklore is a living and moving repertoire. Therefore\, this reality is mouldable and can be reinterpreted with the instruments and sonorities that we now have within our reach. A key tool is the electronics with which they re-signify the melodies without leaving aside their origins. The study and knowledge of the path and the contexts that have given rise to these musics opens the doors of experimentation towards new meanings. In Tarta Relena’s work there is also a desire to play at blurring the concept of authorship\, bringing together anonymous traditional melodies and newly created songs under the same umbrella\, treating them in the same way and placing oral transmission\, the central element of tradition\, at the centre. \nOne of the strong points of the project is the complexity in simplicity and the maximum expression with the minimum of elements. The repertoire work brings together the resources of different vocal techniques (flamenco\, lyrical\, traditional\, jazz…)\, allowing a vast exploration of the possibilities of the voice. \nIn January 2019 Tarta Relena released her first album entitled Ora Pro Nobis (The Indian Runners\, 2019)\, winner of the Enderrock Critics’ Prize for the best folk album of 2019\, which consists of eight a cappella songs with a subtle presence of electronics. In April 2020\, during their confinement\, they released their second work\, Intercede Pro Nobis (The Indian Runners\, 2020)\, recognised by Rockdelux as the best national EP of 2020\, which emphasises the importance of the dialogue between voice and electronics. \nFiat Lux is the first full-length album and is an exploration of the concept of cyclicality through memory\, nostalgia and the evocation of feelings. The love poems written by Sappho of Lesbos or traditional Sephardic songs deal with the same emotional problems we face as individuals in 2021. Whether in archaic Greece\, in medieval times or in the midst of a global pandemic\, the self goes through the same processes of joy and pain\, closes them and begins again\, unable to avoid the course of things. Each poetic “I” illuminates itself in the midst of all the others to say what it has to say. \nThrough the stories of powerful and time-transcendent characters\, such as the Vingen Mary\, Hildegard of Bingen or the Paixtu tribe of women in Afghanistan\, the timelessness and transcendence of these voices and their discourses are explored\, revisited and sung from today’s perspective. \nTarta Relena are: \nMarta Torrella\, voice and electronics. \nHelena Ros\, voice and electronics.

The vocalists will be accompanied by a band of instrumentalists from the SMA Jazz Department. The music will speak to the strength\, elegance\, innovation\, and devotion that women have embodied in the evolution across the diaspora of modern jazz music. \nThe Stax Music Academy jazz department\, under the direction of SMA alumnus Kori Wallace\, currently hosts three main ensembles. The premiere group\, The Legacy Quintet\, boldly carries the torch of Memphis’ rich musical history and features the program’s four top performing instrumentalists and top performing vocalist. Kind Of Blue\, our jazz vocal ensemble\, provides vocalists the opportunity to dive deeply into the nuances of the jazz language spoken by some of the greatest voices in American music. Lastly\, we have the newly minted Phineas Newborn Jazz Orchestra. The PNJO shines a light on one of the titans of Memphis jazz\, and creates the space for students to develop in large ensemble performance. The overall mission of the jazz department is to provide an environment for students to tap into the roots of Memphis music through its deep connection to jazz. Through that connection\, students are also able to develop in their approaches to the many styles synonymous with this great city.

SUMMARY:Deepstaria Enigmatica
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Deepstaria Enigmatica: Memphibians Rising from the Mud\, Making Musical Moods in the Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, March 11\, 2023\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nDeepstaria Enigmatica is a quintet of improvisers from Memphis\, Tennessee\, dedicated to creating otherworldly soundscapes. Named for a rarely seen\, bell-shaped jellyfish discovered by Jacques Cousteau\, the group’s every note is inspired by that famous ocean explorer’s sense of discovery. But don’t assume the five veteran musicians create only chaos: they are as attuned to melodies and harmonies as they are to fine gradations of noise. What emerges with each extemporaneous performance can range from dark swirls of frenetic fury\, to interplanetary hard bop\, to sunlit\, ambient dreamscapes punctuated with snatches of folk song. \nThe diverse experience of the players sets the tone for their deep dives: \nDavid Collins is the composer and guitarist behind Frog Squad\, a Memphis group who have blended jazz improvisation with visionary music as disparate as that of Horace Silver and Erik Satie; he’s equally at home playing simple\, unfettered guitar lines or rocking\, effects-drenched rave ups. \nChad Fowler played alto saxophone with both Frank Lowe and George Cartwright in the 1990s\, and now teams up with the likes of William Parker\, Kidd Jordan\, Ivo Perelman\, Zoh Amba\, Matthew Shipp\, or Brian Blade for music released on the Mahakala Music label; in Deepstaria Enigmatica\, he also plays bass flute and an Otamatone portable synthesizer. \nKeyboardist Alex Greene first studied musique concrète and computer synthesis with composer Judy Klein in the 1980s\, before playing in a variety of Memphis groups ranging from Alex Chilton to Big Ass Truck to Reigning Sound\, not to mention over twenty years of work with New York composer Dave Soldier; now he improvises with multiple keyboards simultaneously\, including a vintage Roland Juno-106. \nSince completing his jazz studies at the University of Memphis in 2016\, drummer Jon Harrison has cast a wide stylistic net with the groups he’s joined\, which include the Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra\, Frog Squad\, Hope Calyburn’s Soul Scrimmage\, Joe Austin\, Roderick Duran\, PXLS\, and the Church Brothers. \nBassist Khari Wynn\, best known as the guitarist for hip hop sensations Public Enemy\, regularly tests more unorthodox waters with groups such as Energy Disciples\, often under the name Mysterioso Africano. \nTogether\, these five musos cohere with a surprising unity of purpose\, as their listening and playing gel into what often sound like prepared compositions. Sharing an uncanny telepathy\, they transport listeners to new worlds of musical possibility.

SUMMARY:Charu Suri Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Charu Suri in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, March 4\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 ($10 students) \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“Charu’s raga-based improvisations are singular.” – Multi Grammy-award winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill \nPianist and composer Charu Suri treads fearlessly between genres\, pulling global influences that range from the mood-anchoring Indian ragas\, Sufi music\, to the trio. Her ground-breaking albums\, The Book of Ragas\, and its sequel\, The Book of Ragas vol. 2 have often elicited the response\, “I’ve never heard this type of sound before.” \nOne of the few female composers from India to perform work at Carnegie Hall\, Charu has lived in four continents\, and writes music that reflect her journey as both a traveler and her training as a classical music piano prodigy. She has been playing the piano since the age of five\, and performing since the age of nine\, and one of her best memories is winning an international piano competition at the age of 15. \nWhat started purely as an experiment with her “Book of Ragas” has turned into a niche that she is now increasingly becoming known for. Her latest album is RAGAS & WALTZES\, a first collaboration between her and Preservation Hall’s jazz drummer\, Joe Lastie. \nIn this album\, dedicated to her late father\, she explores European waltzes through her own jazz lens. The album also includes two ragas\, performed by guitarist Noshir Mody and flutes by Al Jewer. RAGAS & WALTZES has received a lot of praise from critics. JAZZIZ Magazine has praised its classic reinvention of the European waltz\, and All About Jazz said\, “These are all Suri originals\, with which she creates a mood that is a mix\, tune-by-tune\, of longing and solemnity\, then of a lilting and uplifting beauty\, segueing into tender reverence that shifts gear into a segment of lively swing before drifting back to loving respect. And that swing is surely inspired by New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s drummer\, Joe Lastie\, Jr.\, sitting in the recording session’s drummer’s chair.” \nBut she is no stranger to the art of the Songbook too (attribute this to her listening to numerous records of Bill Evans and Billie Holiday as a kid). “The New American Songbook” has garnered many awards\, including a “Band Single of the Year” crystal trophy for her song\, Bluesy\, awarded by the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) in 2021. \nCharu has performed at Lincoln Center and other prestigious concert halls around the world\, including St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She often performs with her band\, and sometimes as a soloist. She embarks on a multi-city RAGAS & WALTZES tour to India starting with a performance at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai\, on September 16th.

Her late father\, Webster Williamson\, an avid amateur singer\, choir director\, and pillar of the St. Stephen’s Baptist Church music ministry\, introduced his children to both sacred music and the secular styles of greats like Louis Armstrong\, Nat King Cole\, and Lena Horne. As a Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music\, her work has taken her to Perugia\, Italy\, Seoul\, South Korea\, Peru and India\, where she performed with saxophonist Donald Harrison in the New Delhi Jazz Festival. \nHer independent recordings\, My Shining Hour and Free to Dream\, have received high praise from jazz critics around the country. In 2014 Patrice started The Ella Project\, a multi-faceted tribute leading up to Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday\, including a concert series\, biographical performance\, and recordings\, including Comes Love\, an album celebrating the collaboration between Fitzgerald and legendary guitarist Joe Pass. \nJENNA MCLEAN \nJenna McLean is a jazz vocalist and Lecturer in Music and Entertainment at the University of Memphis Lambuth in Jackson\, Tennessee. As an accomplished performer\, vocal technician\, songwriter\, and educator\, she finds her artistic drive in bringing new twists to timeless standards of the Great American Songbook as well as pop\, funk\, and soul tunes. With a love and devotion for jazz\, opera\, R&B\, and folk music\, she maintains the belief that all music is good music as long as it speaks to the soul and grooves. \nJenna was the 2019 winner of the Downbeat Student Music Awards Graduate Vocal Soloist Category\, and a 2019 recent recipient of the Pathways to Jazz Grant. She performs regularly at renowned Colorado Jazz Venues including Dazzle and Nocturne\, and has performed and presented multiple times at the Jazz Education Network conference and the Five Points Jazz Festival in Denver. She has had the pleasure of performing alongside renowned musicians such as Bobby McFerrin\, Aubrey Logan and the New York Voices\, and also performs regularly with incredible Denver-based jazz musicians such as Steve Kovalcheck\, Ben Markley\, Eric Gunnison\, Tom Amend\, Dawn Clement\, Annie Booth and others. \nDEBORAH SWINEY \nDeborah Swiney has definitely earned the title of a true chanteuse. Throughout her performance\, you get to enjoy a trip back to Harlem to experience the iconic era of Billie Holiday\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and Sarah Vaughn; you get to dance across the Great American Songbook; and you get to take a flight to Rio where you could close your eyes and imagine relaxing on a Copacabana or Ipanema beach. Being a Memphis native\, you might even get a splash of blues. \nIn a city that loves its blues\, rock\, jazz\, and gospel\, Deborah has carved out a niche uniquely her own. This is evident with her highly praised co-produced debut album\, I Remember Rio\, a Brazilian-inspired album with “Memphis-Soul seasoning” (All about Jazz). I Remember Rio is filled with classic Bossa Nova standards and tunes written by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim as well as Deborah Swiney’s “Bossa Nova Casanova” and guitarist\, Ed Finney’s title song\, “I Remember Rio”. Jazz Weekly describes her as bringing “ a strong and Sarah Vaughan-esque voice to deliver soulful reads of Brazilian…” Transcending the standard definition of a Jazz songstress\, her melodic and sultry approach to Bossa Nova and other Brazilian stylings are natural without betraying her Bluff City roots.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Resident Artist Talks
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, March 2\, 2023\nTalks begin at 6 pm\nTickets: Free \nCrosstown Arts resident artists will give presentations about their work in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts. The event is free and open to the public. \nBrittney Boyd Bullock\, an artist working in fiber\, mixed-media\, and abstraction\, explores the tension between searching and finding\, obsession and order\, and lightness and darkness through two- and three-dimensional forms. Contemplative and personal\, the process-driven works interrogate anxiety and wonder using materials in a new way\, forcing her to make meaning in the arbitrary jumble.

SUMMARY:Making Movies
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Making Movies in The Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, February 23\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nBio: English (Spanish below) \nMaking Movies is a psychedelic Panamanian band that makes American music with an asterisk: because Making Movies’ sound encompasses the entirety of the Americas. It’s through this broader perspective that Making Movies crunches classic rock into Latin American rhythms — African-derived percussion and styles like rumba\, merengue\, mambo and cumbia — in a way that feels oddly familiar\, yet delivers the invigorating chills of hearing something singularly special. \nOver the course of their career\, the quartet has turned heads as a Tiny Desk newcomer (with “A La Deriva”)\, a voice for immigrant rights (with “I Am Another You” which reached #3 on Billboard‘s Latin Pop Album chart)\, and as a co-writer alongside salsa icon Rubén Blades (with Latin GRAMMY nominated song “No Te Calles”). \nMaking Movies has toured extensively\, appearing with the likes of Arcade Fire\, Rubén Blades\, Los Lobos\, Hurray For the Riff Raff\, Bomba Estereo\, Galactic\, Flor De Toloache\, and Thievery Corporation. The band’s fourth album XOPA was just released on L.A.-based label Cósmica Artists.
