SUMMARY:Auteur: Music Inspired by the Films of Wes Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Auteur: Music Inspired by the Films of Wes Anderson in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, August 16\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nPresenting saxophonist Amanda Gardier performing original compositions inspired by the distinct imagery and characters of one of the most famous auteurs in film\, Wes Anderson. \n\n\n\nSaxophonist\, recording artist\, and composer Amanda Gardier has been described as “a uniquely talented jazz composer and soloist” (Nuvo). With influences stemming from Miguel Zenon\, The Bad Plus\, Walter Smith III\, and Bjork\, Gardier is a saxophonist who juxtaposes the calmness of lush harmonies and cyclical melodies with the intensity of complex rhythms and fiery improvisation. With her second release\, Flyover Country\, Gardier “claim[ed] a space among rising saxophonists” (Downbeat) through the display of bold compositions and flexible improvisation. Amanda has performed with Ingrid Jensen\, Dave Stryker\, Leni Stern\, Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra\, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra\, and many others. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University. SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Pierce Pettis
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Pierce Pettis in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, August 10\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter a lifetime of crafting finely-wrought\, heart-touching songs\, singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis (he/him) feels that he’s finally found his comfort zone. “The biggest change\,” he says of this point in his career “has been getting over myself and realizing this is a job and a craft. And the purpose is not fame and fortune (whatever that is) but simply doing good work.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“From the time I was very little\, I always had the music going in my head\,” Pettis explains. “In school\, I met other kids who wanted to be rock stars\, just like me.  From the time we were around 10 or so up through high school\, we put together various bands — all of them horrible.” \nHis “horrible” bands didn’t deter him though and even though he had a nagging feeling  (“I thought I was supposed to be a doctor or something.”) he persevered\, not only playing music but writing songs in a mix of rock\, folk\, country and R&B genres that landed him an unpaid position as a staff writer for Muscle Shoals Sounds Studios. While there\, his track “Song at the End of the Movie” found its way to Joan Baez’s 1979 album Honest Lullaby. \nPettis hit the road and became a member of the “Fast Folk” movement in New York in the mid-1980s and was a staff songwriter for PolyGram from 1993-2000.  Pierce Pettis’ songs have been recorded by artists including Susan Ashton\, Dar Williams\, Garth Brooks and Art Garfunkel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Green Room: Operated by Crosstown Arts\, The Green Room is committed to providing the best possible environment for the two most important components of a musical performance: the artists work and the audiences listening experience. \nAbout Folk All Y’all: Intimate\, attentive performances by exceptional singer-songwriters\, proudly presented in Memphis\, Folk All Y’all is a public\, nonprofit listening room series supported by our pledges from our community. \nEntry requirements may change but your purchase indicates acceptance of any necessary health policy.

SUMMARY:Modern Masters Jazz Series: Roland Barber and The Ted Ludwig Trio
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Roland Barber and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, August 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nNative of Nashville\, TN\, known around the world as “Music City\,” trombonist Roland Barber enjoys a career full of diverse and exciting musical pursuits at the highest level. Roland has achieved a powerful\, soulful and spiritual artistry as a jazz performer\, so much so that Curtis Fuller (John Coltrane’s only trombonist) exclaimed upon hearing him\, “Now THAT’s what jazz trombone is all about!”  Roland’s style is a synthesis of jazz’s finest elements – sporting a keen\, fluent command of the bebop language\, tempered with a compelling sense of melodic “voice” that’s rooted in the swagger and soul of the blues and swing traditions. Roland employs a warm\, personal tone that is lyrical and full\, yet ready to burn with heat and intensity when the moment presents itself.  Roland is also known for his masterful plunger-mute playing – a gem in the music of jazz that goes back to Tricky Sam Nanton of Ellington’s orchestra and a study has been passed down the generations\, most directly to Roland through mentors Steve Turre and Al Grey. \nBarber has performed with titans of jazz music as well as young lions\, including Stefon Harris\, Sean Jones\, Clark Terry\, Branford Marsalis\, Houston Person\, Jeff “Tain” Watts\, Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, the Chico O’Farill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra\, Lainie Cooke and the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Ensemble. Barber has performed in venues the world over\, from Manhattan to Estonia\, including Carnegie Hall\, Birdland\, the Blue Note\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, and Madison Square Garden. Television appearances include MTV’s Making the Band\, NBC’s Saturday Night Live\, CBS’ Today Show and the ESPN Awards. Beyond the jazz realm\, Roland has performed with a stylistically broad “who’s who” of the music scene\, including the Wooten Brothers\, Slavic Soul Party\, Lauryn Hill\, the Nashville Symphony\, Lady A\, Melinda Doolittle\, Chaka Khan\, Aretha Franklin\, Lauren Daigle\, Taj Mahal\, Keb’ Mo\, the Wood Brothers\, Cissy Houston\, La India\, Roberto Blades\, Take 6\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, Kirk Whalum\, the NBC Saturday Night Live Band and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. \nAlongside being a compelling performer\, Barber is also a celebrated composer and arranger\, and was awarded a New Works Jazz Grant from Chamber Music America\, which led to the writing and premier of his first extended suite\, Songs of the Village\, written for quintet. This suite saw its world premiere at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in 2010. \nHaving relocated back to Nashville\, TN after a seven year tenure in NYC\, Roland is now a mainstay in the Nashville studio scene\, having recorded in almost every genre imaginable. Roland’s  combination of experience and talent that puts him at the top of the city’s list when brass performance is needed.  Despite the global difficulties of 2020\, Roland celebrated the first year of recording on EVERY brass instrument (from trumpet to tuba) in the studio\, and is trailblazing a path as a one-man\, multi-instrumentalist brass machine. \nRoland also is quite active in education circles\, having taught for Manhattan School of Music\, the Nashville Symphony\, Vanderbilt University\, Nashville Notes and the Nashville Jazz Workshop.  Roland has given masterclasses around the country at venues including Vanderbilt University\, University of North Carolina\, University of Michigan\, Middle TN State University\, Tennessee State University\, and others.  An educational highlight\, Roland gave a masterclass/clinic for the 2021 JEN Clinic entitled\, “The Voice of the Plunger\,” where he detailed the history and development of the language of the storied mute’s history in jazz.  Beginning with the inception of the mute in Ellington’s early bands\, Roland traced the development of plunger artistry through to the modern master practitioners that helped shape his own approach\, most notably Clark Terry\, Al Grey and Steve Turre. Roland can be found now leading his own bands throughout the region\, be it his small group jazz quartet/quintet\, his NOLA-inspired Righteous Few Brass Band\, or his Salsa-In-English band\, Souvenir. \nBarber holds an M.M. in Jazz Studies from Manhattan School of Music (2005)\, as well as an Artist Diploma (2003) and B.M. in Jazz Studies (2001)\, both from Indiana University.

Recently wrapping up her role as a staff writer and recurring character on season two of Showtime’s YOUR HONOR\, Brandi is currently writing on the Bosch spin-off BALLARD. SUMMARY:Dead Soldiers: Sad Songs and Story Time
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Dead Soldiers: Sad Songs and Story Time in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, June 21\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nDead Soldiers is an eight-piece band from Memphis\, Tennessee\, whose eclectic compositions feature a rock’n’roll core that lifts five-part vocal harmonies\, horns and strings to create a wall of sound. Building on the musical traditions of the Delta and the melting pot aesthetic that first made Memphis the home of rock and roll\, their music is at once irreverent and uniquely American. While firmly rooted in the modern urban South\, they draw heavily from the inspiration of a range of artists: Tom Waits to The Band\, John Prine and Bob Dylan to Frank Zappa and Randy Newman. Like Dead Soldiers\, they’re all artists who refuse to be easily classified. With humor\, cynicism and an underlying foundation of humanity\, Dead Soldiers’ songs root for the underdog while skewering the hypocrisy of the post-modern media landscape. \n\nOn the heels of their first new music release since 2017 — Dead Soldiers: Ride EP — the band also has a video premiere on June 6 at the Memphis Listening Lab. Recognized for their raucous and rowdy shows\, they seldom get to perform a fair bit of their catalog that is more conducive to a listening room environment. This show will feature many of Dead Soldiers’ least-performed songs and unique arrangements of existing songs in their live repertoire.

The 2023 Nashville Scene artist to watch and 2022 Boston Music Awards Americana Artist of the Year nominee put queer and trans empowerment at the very heart of Renovations\, both in their encouraging\, vulnerable lyrics and in the musicians they enlisted to play on their songs.

Her songs serve as postcards from an artist brave enough to take the road less traveled. Reardon dove head first into music at the young age of 15\, and has spent much of the past decade writing\, recording and performing music around the world. \nRaised in a coastal Massachusetts town north of Boston\, Reardon spent three years based in Nashville and much of the past six years carrying her songs and stories all over the globe — including a six-month artist-in-residency stay in Dachau\, Germany — gathering experiences\, inspiration and soulful connections. Her ever-deepening music carries a lyrical and melodic weight beyond her years\, being described as “brilliantly moving folk/pop with a lyrical depth and soul” (Performer Magazine) and “a melancholy little masterpiece” (American Songwriter Magazine). No Depression writes “Reardon is truly a treasure.” \n

SUMMARY:Ben Nichols and Rick Steff (of Lucero)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Ben Nichols and Rick Steff (of Lucero) in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, May 4\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\nMemphis music legends Lucero’s Ben Nichols and Rick Steff are teaming up to play a very special performance in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \n\n\n\nSince forming in Memphis in the late ’90s\, Lucero’s base musical hallmarks have remained similar to the band’s initial sound established with their first record The Attic Tapes. In the history of their expansive discography\, Lucero has evolved and embraced everything from southern rock to Stax-inspired Memphis soul\, whilst simultaneously maintaining their distinctive sonic foundations. Over 20 years later\, dedicated fans of the group still flock to hear the band’s punchy driving rhythms\, punk-rooted guitar licks\, and lyrics that evoke the whiskey drenched sentimentality of Americana singer-songwriters. As expected of any band built to survive\, Lucero has welcomed change over the course of their career\, but it has always been on their terms.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Jeff Hulett and the Hand Me Down’s in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, April 25\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nFrom the outside\, Jeff Hulett might seem like a late-blooming guitarist and songwriter. But if you ask any of his fellow musicians they’ll tell you he was writing songs and playing music long before he put pen to paper or strummed a chord. \n\n\nHis unique style landed him in the band Snowglobe. Over his many years with the Memphis-based institution\, Hulett regularly contributed melodies\, lyrics\, and arrangements to many of the tunes in their prolific cannon. You can even hear a few of his originals in their discography. \n\n\n\n\nDuring his long tenure with Snowglobe\, Hulett continued to hone his own voice and develop his own creative projects. He began playing guitar more\, and writing his own lyrics. This dedication and passion led to his collaboration with Leah Keys in the band Me & Leah. They released an eponymous and beautiful CD in 2016 featuring nine original folk tunes. Then in 2019\, Me & Leah added Jonathan Schallert to the mix to record and partially release a digital copy of their 7 inch Most of Your Life. Both albums were engineered by accomplished mainstays Toby Vest and Pete Mathews of High/Low and Andrew McCalla\, respectively. \n\n\n\nRecently\, Hulett had a song placed in Hulu’s Single Drunk Female and also provided the score for Empty to Enough\, a documentary about Room in the Inn – Memphis.

We settled in North Mississippi and evolved into three groups: the preachers\, the drunks\, and the outlaws; and then kind of a mid-range group. I came from the mid-range group.” \n\n\n\n\nCyrena Wages fell in love with music on the country backroads between Millington and Shelby Forest\, two small towns just north of Memphis. Her upcoming debut album\, Vanity Project\, is both an exercise in rebellion against years of conditioning\, as well as a way of processing her own struggles\, healing\, and growth. As much as Memphis shaped her positively\, there were aspects of growing up as a woman in the South that didn’t align with who she wanted to become. Cyrena tapped producer Matt Ross-Spang (Charley Crockett\, St. Paul and the Broken Bones\, Margo Price) to helm Vanity Project at Southern Grooves Studio in Memphis. \n\n\n\n\n“It had been a really long time coming. I was getting ready to make this record\,” says Cyrena\, “and I heard about a music biz guy saying—before ever hearing my songs—‘Yeah\, but she’s kind of a vanity project\, right?’” \nAnd just like that\, the album had roots and the title track was born. “I just feel ready\, when I haven’t felt ready before. Everybody comes to terms with themselves on a different timeline. It took me a second\, but now it’s my time.” Find Cyrena’s first single “Carried Away” and second single “Robin Hood” on all platforms now. \n\n\n\n\nLilly Winwood is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter with a captivating sound that seamlessly fuses elements of folk\, R&B and Americana. Born into a musical family\, she inherited a love for singing and honed her craft with a voice that exudes both power and vulnerability. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences and introspection\, Lilly’s heartfelt lyrics and soulful vocals create an authentic and resonant connection with her audience. As she continues to evolve as an artist\, Lilly Winwood’s passion and undeniable talent solidify her place as a rising star in the music world.
