SUMMARY:Pecha Kucha: Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Wi-Moto Nyoka\, Stacy Kranitz\, James Walker\, and Valerie Houston will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

SUMMARY:The Music of Sonny Rollins
DESCRIPTION:Jazz tribute to American jazz tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins featuring Bryant Lockhart (tenor sax)\, Alvie Givhan (piano)\, Sylvester Sample (bass)\, and Mike Assad (drums). \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 6:30 pm | performance at 7 pm\nLocation: Crosstown Arts East Atrium \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \n\n \nAbout Bryant Lockhart:\nBryant Lockhart is a gospel and jazz saxophonist/arranger/composer from Memphis\, TN. His sound and style is greatly influenced by the artistry of musicians like Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon\, John Coltrane\, Sonny Stitt\, Charlie Parker\, and Joshua Redman to name a few. Yet the core of his music is deeply rooted in the spiritual from his upbringing in the church. Bryant splits his time as an educator at Southwest TN Community College tutoring in math and science\, a private music instructor at Christian Brothers High School\, and touring with jazz legend Dee Dee Bridgewater. \nMusic is a passion and a release for Bryant. He has been part of a number of ensembles over the years as a member and featured soloist. These ensembles include The University of Memphis Southern Comfort Jazz Ensemble\, The New Memphis Hepcats\, The Sanctuary Jazz Orchestra\, Revelation Instrumental Band\, The Underground Band\, The Charles Pender Quartet\, the Northern Mississippi Jurisdictional Orchestra\, and the J.O. Patterson Fine Arts Orchestra of the Church of God in Christ. He has been featured on several CD projects and has worked with numerous local artists such as Billy Gibson\, Bryant Swearingen\, Reginald Harris\, and Candice Ivory. \n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

SUMMARY:The Music from the Hard-Bop Years (1955-1965)
DESCRIPTION:The students and faculty from The Memphis Jazz Workshop present The Music from the Hard-Bop Years (1955-1965). Featuring the music of jazz artists\, such as Lee Morgan\, Art Blakey\, Herbie Hancock\, Joe Henderson\, Cannonball Adderley\, Bobby Timmons\, Wayne Shorter\, and more. \nThis event is chaired by jazz pianist and educator Stephen Lee. Featuring Stephen Lee (piano)\, Gary Topper (tenor sax)\, Johnny Yancey (trumpet)\, Tyler Cain (acoustic bass)\, and Nygel Yancey (drums). \nDoors at 6:30 pm | performance at 7 pm\nTickets: $15 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \n\n \nAbout Stephen Lee:\nStephen Lee is a Memphis native who has come full circle.  His talent and love for the music carried him miles from home\, only to have him return with the whole-hearted desire to enrich and serve his home community.  Stephen found a passion for piano at the age of 8 and has never once looked back. \nWhile at the University of Tennessee\, he studied with jazz legend Donald Brown before moving to New York City to formally launch his career as a jazz artist.  The move to New York City served him well. It proved to be fertile ground\, providing him with access to many of the giants of jazz and landing him in some of the most hallowed venues in the country like Smalls\, Birdland and Iridium. During his tenure in the City\, he shared a stage with a litany of stars like Esperanza Spaulding\, Corcoran Holt\, Ulysses Owens Jr\, Billy Johnson\, Gregory Porter and highly lauded fellow Memphian Kirk Whalum. \nIn addition to his performance credentials\, he served as Musical Director for Manhattan’s Crenshaw Christian Center under the leadership of Dr. Fredrick Price (one of the most well-known names in ministry).  In New York\, he rounded out his studies with a Bachelor’s in Jazz Performance from City College and a Master’s degree in Education from Freed Hardeman University. \nUpon his move to Memphis in 2009\, the growth\, opportunities\, and accolades continued. In 2012\, Stephen received the Rhythm of Gospel Award. In 2013\, he was nominated for First Round in the Stellar Gospel Awards for his album debut\, Music in the Key of my Life.  In 2017\, he won the Steinway and Sons Top Teacher Award and the Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Award. \nEven still\, he moves forward in the spirit of service and humility\, firmly committed to the youth and music arts community in Memphis. He values the importance and impact of the arts for young people\, which understands firsthand. He says\, “Being connected to something you feel passionate about makes a huge difference in a kid’s life. \nLee is also Founder/CEO of the Memphis Jazz Workshop\, a non-profit organization committed to cultivating young musicians by providing learning and performance opportunities with professional artists while embracing Jazz as our regional art form. Memphis Jazz Workshop was formed under the umbrella of LeeJazzOmega. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz.

SUMMARY:Don't Stop Dancing to the Music! A Conversation with The Bar-Kays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with The Bar-Kays’ Larry Dodson and Winston Stewart. Free and open to the public. Moderated by Memphis radio personality (and Crosstown Arts community outreach coordinator) Porsche Stevens\, this freewheeling conversation will include stories from the band’s rich past and much more. \nFollowing the tragic 1967 plane crash that resulted in the tragic death of four of its members and their mentor\, Otis Redding\, The Bar-Kays reformed with new members and began a nearly five-decade run of chart success and high-energy live performances. \nTwo key members of the second Bar-Kays era were lead vocalist Larry Dodson\, who recently retired after nearly fifty years in the band\, and keyboard player Winston Stewart. Both members played at the 1972 Wattstax Festival\, stuck with Stax Records until its closure in 1975\, and helped the band redefine their sound during the disco era. \nIn conjunction with Give a Damn: Music & Activism at Stax Records\, on view at Crosstown Arts through Dec. 2.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - The Music of Nancy Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Ticket sales for the Music of Nancy Wilson have sold out. Please check back next month for details on our next Crosstown Jazz Series concert. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | show at 7 pm \nJazz tribute to Grammy-winning jazz songstress Nancy Wilson featuring D’Monet (vocalist)\, Darryl Sanford (piano)\, Carl Casperson (acoustic bass)\, Jonathan Bass (guitar)\, Mike Assad (drums). \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \nNancy Wilson (born February 20\, 1937) is an American singer with more than seventy albums\, and three Grammy Awards. \n\n \nAbout D’Monet:\nHow an artist starts a journey can say a lot about their destination; belting out melodies from the womb is a divine beginning. The classically trained voice known as D’Monet cannot be defined as a Jazz\, Rhythm and Blues\, or Pop singer … but she has redefined the meaning of the traditional soul artist. \nD’Monet allows you to travel on contorted twists of loves’ successes and failures\, all while exercising her massive vocal prowess. Nurturing her vocal gifts from the tender age of 4\, along with developing her ear for the piano by 7\, she now is a seasoned veteran. \nD’Monet has shared her soul from New York to Los Angeles\, but it’s only natural she makes Memphis\, Tennessee the home of her “Futuristic Soul.” As D’Monet inspires those within her artistic circle\, she soaks inspiration from classic triple threat artists\, such as Anita Baker\, Oleta Adams\, Celine Dion\, Luther Vandross\, Stevie Wonder and Rachelle Ferrell. \nD’Monet has a gift for building bridges between a song and her audience\, crossing cultural and musical genres. This elegant songstress approaches each note with a sophisticated passion\, which leaves the listener addicted and wanting more. D’Monet’s recordings can only be matched by her live performances in various venues around Memphis\, TN. She has been featured on numerous stages and sets\, and her sound has allowed her to branch out across several genres. \nShe was honored to perform as the special guest for Black Enterprise’s Women of Power Summit in 2012. Having shared the stage with Soul Crooner Eric Roberson\, and also having a brief stint as a background singer for Blackstreet’s Dave Hollister\, D’Monet has become a musical mainstay\, particularly in the city of Memphis. In 2011\, D’Monet was featured on Markevius Faulkner‘s hit single “Day One\,” which received major radio airplay on WHAL-FM’S 95.7 Hallelujah FM. In the wake of “Day One”’s success\, D’Monet released her debut single\, “Oooh Baby (Got Your Back).” Her quest to continue along her musical journey is just beginning. \n\nAbout Strictly Jazz Entertainment:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz.

SUMMARY:Workshop: So You Don't Like New Music ...
DESCRIPTION:ICEBERG New Music composer Derek Cooper will lead a workshop called  “So You Don’t Like New Music … A Suggestive Way to Listen to Contemporary Classical Music.” \nFree \nICEBERG New Music is a New York City-based collective of composers who will be spending a week in Memphis working with Blueshift musicians to put on a performance of their compositions on Thursday\, June 14\, 7 pm. Sponsored in part by Amro Music. \n\n\n\nAbout ICEBERG New Music:\nFounded by composer Alex Burtzos in 2016\, ICEBERG new music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. The mission of the organization is to promote the idea that substance – not surface – is the heart of music creation and perception. We live in an era where dogma is out of place; composers can\, and should\, draw from an unprecedentedly broad array of influences in their work – including popular music\, avant-garde techniques\, and everything in between. The ten ICEBERG composers hail from different schools and cultivate radically different sounds\, but their contrasting musical languages belie shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. ICEBERG is committed to radical stylistic inclusiveness\, excellence of craft\, dialogue with the audience\, and a modernization of the concert-going experience.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Blueshift Ensemble:\nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers.
