SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: Sexuality & Politics
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts staff will moderate a conversation with Mauricio Calvo and Sharolyn Peyton exploring how sexuality and sexual expression are linked to\, and affected by\, social and civic politics. \n\nFor the past 25 years\, Mauricio Calvo has chosen Memphis\, “the 901\,” as his home. Over the course of his career\, he has worked tirelessly to help ensure that the Memphis community has been heard. Through his leadership\, serving as the executive director of Latino Memphis for 11 years\, he has worked with diverse and underrepresented populations within and outside of the city. Using this platform\, he has fearlessly spoken out against acts of injustice\, both local and national\, to uplift the voices of those in need. \nHe is a proud graduate of CBU. Mauricio obtained a masters degree from Lipscomb University and completed graduate work at Boston College. He is also a graduate of Leadership Memphis\, New Memphis and Leadership Tennessee. \nMauricio is openly bi. He and his best friend\, local artist Yancy Villa-Calvo\, married 19 years ago. Together they are figuring out how to raise three future leaders: Anna 14\, Carolina 13 and Santiago 11\, all of whom proudly attend public schools. They all have to endure his cooking every night\, from his famous grilled tacos to his stir fry tofu. The Calvo-Villa’s are champions of progressive social issues\, and they love to enjoy all things Memphis as a family. \nWhen feeling down\, to boost his ego\, he recalls being named “Top 10 Young Professionals” by The Memphis Chamber (a while ago)\, “12 Who Made a Difference in 2012” by The Commercial Appeal and “Top 40 Under 40” by the Memphis Business Journal. In 2018\, he was named “Communicator of the Year” by the Memphis chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). In 2018 he received the “NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award” for Tennessee. In 2019 the Memphis Business Journal featured him as one of “100 Most Powerful People in Memphis business.” In commemoration of its 75th anniversary\, The Memphis Urban League will recognize Mauricio as a Diamond of HOPE” in the fall of 2019. \nWhen he is not working with his organization or spending quality time with his family\, Mauricio dedicates time to contributing to other parts of the Memphis community. He serves on various boards\, including the Downtown Memphis Commission\, Hope Credit Union\, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau\, We Are Memphis\, Shelby Farms Park Conservancy\, and the National Leadership Council for LeBonheur Children’s Hospital among others. \nMost recently\, after 25 years\, Yancy and Mauricio became US citizens\, a privilege they know many are unable to obtain. As a citizen\, Mauricio will continue to use his voice\, and his vote\, to fight for others that are deserving of their own American dream. \n\nSharolyn Payton\, Professional Life\, Business\, and Community Coach\, is a champion for all things human development. Her mission is to help people identify\, cultivate\, and demonstrate their full human potential. Sharolyn attended Crichton College\, where she studied Christian Ministry and Belhaven University where she studied Applied Psychology.  She is the Lead Coach at Payton Place Coaching & Consulting. Her practice primarily serves nonprofit organizations\, minority and women business owners\, and visionary leaders. Sharolyn is known for her community-centered\, advocacy-based\, style of social entrepreneurship\, as well as her passion for social justice.  She has been recognized as a community influencer who encourages and promotes solution-focused\, inter-generational dialogue about social\, cultural\, political\, and economic challenges that exist in Memphis and in our Global community. Wherever there is “truth” that needs to be told or hard questions that need to be asked\, Sharolyn can usually be found in those places and spaces.

Moderated by photographer and producer Andrea Morales\, the panelists will discuss various aspects of producing music documentaries; from building relationships with musicians to representing diversity in music in the south. To learn more about The Southern Documentary Project\, please visit southdocs.org. \nShoot & Splice is a monthly filmmaking discussion presented collaboratively by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | presentation at 7 pm \n\nAbout the panelists:\nAndrea Morales is a documentary photographer based in Memphis\, Tennessee and a producer with the University of Mississippi’s Southern Documentary Project. Her photojournalistic work has been commissioned and published by outlets such as The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Intercept\, and NBC News. She also works with MLK50.com: Justice Through Journalism. \nMary Stanton Knight is a graduate of the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture with an MFA in Documentary Expression. She earned her Master’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism with an emphasis in Integrated Marketing Communications from UM’s School of Journalism. Mary received the North Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance Film Grant through the Oxford Film Festival and the Mississippi Film Alliance Emerging Filmmaker Award both in 2018 for her short documentary film\, Dear Hubert Creekmore. Her films have been selected by the Oxford Film Festival\, the South Georgia Film Festival\, and the UM Film Festival.  Her short music documentary\, Singing Out\, was selected to open for filmmaker John Rash’s screenings of his award-winning feature documentary NEGRO TERROR on his North Carolina tour in the summer of 2019. \nRex Jones is a filmmaker with the Southern Documentary Project at the University of Mississippi and an instructor in the MFA in Documentary Expression program at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture.  Rex’s body of work includes FLAG FLAP OVER MISSISSIPPI (2018)\, LA FRONTERA (2017) and LONGLEAF: THE HEART OF PINE (2016)\, which were broadcast on select PBS stations nationwide. BEAUTIFUL JIM (2014) won the Programmers’ Choice Award at the Crossroads Film Festival\, A TIME TO ALL THINGS (2014) won the Heritage Award in Preservation Education from the Mississippi Heritage Trust\, and A PICKUP LOAD OF PIGS (2011) won the Award for Outstanding Media Product from the Wildlife Society. Rex is also the co-author of LECILE: THIS AIN’T MY FIRST RODEO (2015)\, which was the winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award for Excellence in Western Literature.  Rex’s current film\, CAMILLE: THE ORIGINAL MONSTER STORM (2019)\, will make its broadcast premiere in August.

Join Gabe as he discusses setting up shots\, camera and lens choices\, lighting\, working with directors\, directing documentaries\, creating a sustainable career as a cinematographer in a fly-over state\, and his involvement in the Arkansas Film Society. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | presentation at 7 pm \nShoot & Splice is a monthly forum for film makers presented by Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts. \n\nAbout Gabe Mayhan:\nGabe Mayhan has compiled a diverse body of work over the course of his cinematography career. Whether it was from his time covering breaking news\, to shooting in remote locations in South America for an adventure show\, or crafting stylistic narrative stories\, he approaches each project with dutiful ambition\, respectful collaboration\, and innovative technique. His work has been screened at film festivals such as Slamdance and Tribeca\, broadcast on networks the likes of HBO\, Showtime and PBS\, and screened theatrically across the US. Many of the films have been recognized and awarded for the cinematography. \n2016 was a pretty big year for Gabe\, having two films released theatrically\, Greater and Lazy Eye. Greater is a heartfelt drama set in the world of college football. And Lazy Eye\, a bittersweet romance about reconnecting with a lost love. Although very different in style and content\, both films have been well-received. Gabe also returned behind the lens for the second season of  Mineral Explorers\, a travel show that explores the origins and geological stories of minerals from around the world. \nOther forthcoming works are the feature films All the Birds Have Flown South\, a southern gothic drama that deals with despair and addiction\, and Antiquities\, a coming-of-age story about a young man encountering loss and finding himself in the journey. \nWhether behind the lens or in the director’s chair\, his work on documentaries is gaining attention as well. In 2012\, he shot All About Ann\, an HBO documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Texas Governor Ann Richards\, and Champion Trees\, a documentary for PBS that explores the relationship between art and nature. The show captured two Emmys for Cultural Documentary and Cinematography in 2014. Slated to air spring of 2017\, the documentary Dream Land tells the history of an African American neighborhood during segregation and the lasting impact of Urban Renewal. In both Champion Trees and Dream Land\, Gabe held double duties as the films’ director and cinematographer. \nGabe’s unique vision and strong understanding of story have quickly gained the interest of filmmakers and audiences around the country. He brings an understanding that each project has its own way to be crafted visually\, and within each story there is a unique opportunity to evolve the narrative emotionally through the cinematography\, allowing the film to be seen — in its best light.

A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City and beyond and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. In 2018\, Dr. Shults was selected to perform at the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference Friday night headline concert as a featured soloist along with Branford Marsalis. As a graduate student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, Michael was a finalist in the 2012 North America Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. \nEqually adept as a concert saxophonist\, Shults has been praised for his “jaw-dropping” and “authoritative”technique (Bill Brownlee of the Kansas City Star) and has performed by invitation at the College Band Director’s National Association conference\, the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference and the University of Iowa Festival for New Music. He is a founding faculty member of the Kansas City Saxophone Workshop along with Zach Shemon\, alto saxophonist of the PRISM Quartet. Dr. Shults has also served on the faculty of the Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Workshop at Shell Lake Arts Center. Michael is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis and previously held the same position at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. \nHe is a Yamaha and D’Addario performing artist and performs on their instruments and reeds exclusively. \n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. After graduating with a degree in English Literature from Hendrix College\, he finished his first feature documentary\, Pink Houses. Currently\, he is launching his personal project\, Tell Me A Memory\, where he interviews and shares the stories of the Queer community. \nHe has received a Stonewall Society Pride in the Arts Award and has been awarded residencies and fellowships at Film Independent\, Crosstown Arts\, Kopkind Colony\, and the Smithsonian. He has also received the Four Sisters Scholarship\, Edie and Lew Wasserman Grant\, and Carl David Memorial Fellowship. \nBrett Hanover is a filmmaker and youth media educator from Memphis\, TN\, whose work explores outsider art\, mental health\, and Queer fan communities. DESCRIPTION:With special guest Madame Fraankie \nDoors at 8 pm | Performance at 9 pm \n\nOn Fri​day\, September 14th ​at 8:00pm\, ​Visual​\, Musical\, and ​​Performance ​Artist Lawrence ​​Matthews​\, also known as Don Lifted\, will transform Crosstown Arts visually and sonically​ with brand new music. ​His performance will feature sculptural and video installations\, as well as performances from his album “Alero” and his coming album “Contour\,”​ which will be released on September 21st. Audiences will be immersed in music performed live and surrounded by swirling nostalgic imagery that follows the narrative of each song. Brand new Don Lifted merchandise will be available for purchase at the event. \nProduction on “Contour” began in Memphis in late 2015. In 2018\, the record was finished and mastered in Hollywood​ by Grammy Award-winning Engineer Mike Bozzi (Flower Boy\, Ctrl\, Good Kid\, Maad City\, To Pimp A Butterfly\, Damn\, Blankface LP). \nMatthews is a multi-disciplinary creative​ with connections reaching deep into the ​Memphis art scene​. Born in Memphis\, his work combines Post Modern\, Pop Art\, and contemporary influences to tell the story of the African Descendant living in America. His work ranges from oil paintings\, collage\, photography\, and ready-made sculpture\, to music and film. Matthews’ musical style incorporates hip-hop\, alternative rock and electronic music resulting in emotionally vulnerable storytelling and eclectic production. A hot emerging artist\, Matthew’s work began to garner acclaim before he had completed his Bachelor’s in Fine Art at University of Memphis\, awarded “Best of Show” in the University’s 31st Annual Juried Student Exhibition in 2014 and the Deans Creative Achievement Award and Department of Art Creative Achievement Award in 2015. In 2016\, he was awarded the Arts Accelerator Grant from Arts Memphis. His performances helped inaugurate Crosstown Art’s new space in the Concourse and have been feature events at the Brooks Museum and Civil Rights Museum. Matthews is also a member of the Collective\, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the work of local artists of color.

Thompson received his undergraduate degree  in Trumpet Performance and his master’s in Jazz Pedagogy at the University of Memphis. \nHe’s performed with Aretha Franklin\, Ray Charles\, Randy Brecker\, Chuck Findley\, George Coleman\, Lee Konitz\, and all the Memphis piano greats\, such as Phineas Newborn\, James Williams\, Donald Brown\, and Mulgrew Miller. \nHis recording/touring credits include Al Green\, Rufus Thomas\, Cat Power\, Lucero\, Ann Peebles\, and the Bo-Keys. His Grammy-winning credits include Robert Cray and Otis Rush. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mark Jones \nJoin prolific Memphis filmmaker Mark Jones as he presents his workshop and discussion\, “Filmmaking Within Your Means.” Mark will share his writing and filmmaking ethos\, including writing for realistic and simple locations and minimizing the amount of speaking roles. But most importantly\, this workshop will help teach you how to embrace your supposed creative limitations to make a wholly unique and original film. \nMark Jones lives in Memphis\, Tennessee\, with his partner.  He has made three feature films\, “Tennessee Queer\,” “Fraternity Massacre At Hell Island\,” “Eli Parker Is Getting Married?\,” and one web soap opera\, “On The Edge of Happiness.” Mark worked at WKNO-TV\, the Memphis PBS station\, for several years both on the production crew and as an associate produce for a local roundtable discussion show. He now has a web talk show\, “Memphis on the Mark\,” where he interviews locals artists in the fields of film\, music\, and theatre. Mark’s short films (“Death$ in a $mall Town\,” “Winding Brook\,” “Henry\,” & “Best Wedding Gift”) have screened at dozens of festivals around the country. \nReception at 6:30pm\, discussion begins at 7pm. Free and open to the public.
