SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Resident Artists Open Studio Night
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts is proud to invite the Memphis community to visit the artist studios. Artists in residence will have their studios open on Friday\, December 2\, from 5 to 7 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nBrittney Boyd Bullock explores the tension between searching and finding\, obsession and order\, and lightness and darkness through two- and three-dimensional forms. Contemplative and personal\, the process-driven works interrogate anxiety and wonder using materials in a new way\, forcing her to make meaning in the arbitrary jumble. \nBrittney’s work is a sensory dwelling that uses repetition\, color\, and story in ways that trigger joy and wonder. She uses ephemera and memorabilia to reimagine possibilities\, create new solutions\, and ask more questions. Making new contexts for old worlds makes them new again; these new versions of what already exists are how she understands the power of play\, existence\, world-building\, and the human experience. \nR Jason Rawlings is a filmmaker and visual artist residing and working in Memphis\, Tennessee. His work often revolves around the home and how our living spaces connect us to the world at large. The stories are born from a place\, evolve from there\, and are colored by the intricacies of the location. His most recent work\, Natives\, has been featured in both Indie Memphis and Oxford Film Festivals and awarded Best Director by the Mid-South Black Film Festival. He is a graduate of the University of Memphis film program. \nNelson Gutierrez is an artist exploring the constant struggle of individuals and some communities at large for a better life — resilience\, hope\, the search for common ground. His work is informed by personal and collective memories. It is composed of two- and three-dimensional pieces\, conceptual objects and installations that reflect current socio-political issues. Different materials are juxtaposed in a way that provides symbolic relevance to the topic being explored. Diverse mediums are used to express feelings of collective longing\, fear\, grief and hope. \nAngelo Madsen Minax is a filmmaker\, visual artist\, performer\, and educator. His projects consider how human intimacies are woven through personal and collective histories\, cultures\, and kinships. His recent film\, North By Current (2021)\, aired on season 34 of POV (PBS)\, was a New York Times Critics Pick\, and has been called “A beautiful\, complex wonder of a film\,” by Rolling Stone. Madsen is currently a Guggenheim Fellow.

A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City and beyond\, and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. Michael is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis. Prior to Memphis\, he taught for four years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He has worked with the Jackson\, Tupelo\, and Memphis Symphony Orchestras and has been featured at the IAJE Conference in New Orleans. \n2:30 – 4:30pm Performance: Opera Memphis presents ‘As One’\, a chamber opera created by Laura Kaminsky\, Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed. Featuring Blythe Gaissert\, Michael Kelly and Blueshift Ensemble string quartet. – CROSSTOWN THEATER\nThe most produced new American opera in North America\, As One is a chamber opera in which two voices—Hannah after (Blythe Gaissert\, mezzo-soprano) and Hannah before (Michael Kelly\, baritone)—share the part of a sole transgender protagonist. Fifteen songs comprise the three-part narrative; with empathy and humor\, they trace Hannah’s experiences from her youth in a small town to her college years—and finally traveling alone to a different country\, where she realizes some truths about herself. Over 90 minutes\, a series of repeating patterns creates a peculiar kind of harmony in which two musicians are rarely “playing together” but are nonetheless intimately bonded. The Knoxville-based duo Two-Way Street (Ashlee Booth and Adam Lion) commissioned Hennies to compose “a very long piece;” for this performance they step into its two intertwining roles. \n6:30 – 7:15pm Performance: Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel – GREEN ROOM\n“The name of this Atlanta duo implies a proper classical recital\, a rigid formality. But Scott Burland (theremin) and Frank Schultz (lap steel) don’t do scripted\, improvising not so much distinct sounds as evolving eddies of sound\, vapors of tones that develop and transform gracefully. Hypnotic pulses and dreamy drones weave together to form a kaleidoscope of sounds and moods\, ambient clouds and swooning collages that are as much about texture as they are timbre\, like a long-lost soundtrack to a deep-sea documentary.” -P. Wall\, Columbia Free Times \n7:20 – 8:00pm Performance: New Memphis Colorways – EAST ATRIUM\nOne of the best kept secrets from Memphis\, yet well respected by those who know of him outside of the city= multi instrumentalist\, singer/songwriter and producer\, Paul “Snowflake” Taylor has been writing and recording his own material as a one man band since very early childhood and working as a professional musician since he was 14 years old. With 3 solo releases under his belt – “Open Closed” (2007) & “Share It” (2009) both on Makeshift Records\, and self released The Old Forest Trail EP (2015)\, Paul has now embarked on a new project called New Memphis Colorways and released a new EP\, Old Forest Loop\, which embodies wide ranging influences from his storied career as a Memphis musician. \n8:15 – 9:15pm Performance: Blueshift Ensemble performs ICEBERG New Music – GREEN ROOM\nBlueshift is a Memphis based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, soul\, and hip hop and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. \nThis performance features works composed by ICEBERG New Music composers Alex Burtzos\, Will Healy\, Jonathan Russ\, Harry Stafylakis\, and Derek Cooper. \n9:15 pm Project Logic with MonoNeon\, Vernon Reid and Daru Jones Official – CROSSTOWN THEATER\nThe theorem of turntablist as musician has been long proven in the capable hands of DJ Logic\, whom with jazz as his foundation has become a wax innovator by crossing genres and mixing his sound across the map. As one of the world’s most accomplished turntablists\, DJ Logic is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip–hop realms and is considered by most as a highly-respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. \nDywane Thomas\, Jr. also known as MonoNeon\, is an American bassist and experimental musician. He is known for his presence on YouTube playing bass guitar and known for being one of the last people to work with Prince. Thomas also played with Grammy Award-winning R&B artist\, Ne-Yo\, on his fourth studio album. He is a native of Memphis\, Tennessee. \nAs the lead guitarist of Living Colour and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition\, Vernon Reid has done a great deal to undermine stereotypical expectations of what music black artists ought to play; his rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from hard rock and punk to funk\, R&B and avant-garde jazz\, and his anarchic\, lightning-fast solos have become something of a hallmark as well. \nDaru Jones is one of the most respected drummers of his generation. Born to two professional musicians\, he began playing the drums at the age of four. Though he got his start in the church\, Jones has been influenced by musicians from a wide range of genres. These eclectic musical tastes have carried over into his own career as he has recorded\, performed\, and toured with renowned artists and producers such as: Jack White\, Slum Village\, Talib Kweli\, Black Milk\, Dwight Yoakam\, Jamie Lidell\, Pete Rock\, Salaam Remi\, Gloria Gaynor\, Kim Burrell\, Rance Allen\, Black Violin\, Ski Beatz & The Sensei’s\, Lorenzo Jovanotti and Jon B and more.

SUMMARY:Workshop Series — Simultaneous Contrast: Experiments with Color
DESCRIPTION:Lifeworks\, in conjunction with Crosstown Arts\, is pleased to host Los Angeles-based artist\, Pamela Jorden\, to lead a painting workshop.  In Simultaneous Contrast: Experiments with Color\, Jorden will guide participants through considerations of color\, texture\, and unexpected juxtapositions that inspire experimentation with paint and process.  \nRegistration fee $125 (materials not included). Lunch will be provided.\nSpace is limited. To register please email laurel@crosstownarts.org. \nWorkshop Description:\nAt Black Mountain College\, Joseph Albers gave his students an exercise called the matière inviting them to explore their surroundings and collect materials\, paying close attention to their visual and tactile qualities. Matières are ephemeral sculptural arrangements comprised of found materials. Amy Sillman and Munro Galloway created an assignment called Color Walk that asks participants to wander within their environment following a color or colors considering the use\, context\, and associations related to specific colors or combinations. Both exercises encourage careful consideration of what might usually be overlooked and ask the observer to notice context and contrast\, similarity and difference.\n\nInspired by these prompts\, participants in this workshop will be asked to take a walk in a particular location that influences how they think about their artwork. Participants will be asked to observe color and texture and the material qualities of this location and to bring found materials back into the studio.  Consideration of color\, texture\, and unexpected juxtapositions will inspire our experimentations with paint and process. Further instruction and suggested reading to follow. \nThis event is supported by Lifeworks in conjunction with Crosstown Arts. \nAbout the artist:\nPamela Jorden (b. 1969\, Knoxville\, TN) received her BFA from University of Tennessee\, Knoxville in 1992 and her MFA from California Institute of the Arts in 1996. Recent exhibitions include The Day in the Night with Katy Cowan at Philip Martin Gallery in Los Angeles. Jorden has had solo exhibitions at Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery (New York\, NY); Romer Young Gallery (San Francisco\, CA); David Patton Los Angeles (Los Angeles\, CA); and Mason Gross Art Gallery\, Rutgers University (New Brunswick\, NJ). \nSelected group exhibitions include Around Flat\, Knockdown Center (Maspeth\, NY); NOW-ISM: Abstraction Today at the Pizzuti Collection (Columbus\, Ohio); Alice Konitz\, Pamela Jorden\, Jeff Ono at Samuel Freeman Gallery (Los Angeles\, CA); Forms of Abstraction at the Irvine Fine Arts Center (Irvine\, CA). Her work has been reviewed in numerous print and online publications including Art Forum\, Art in America\, ArtNews\, and ArtPractical. \n A monograph\, Pamela Jorden 2004-2014\, with an essay by Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer and a conversation with Kaveri Nair and Alice Könitz has been released through Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery and Black Dog Publishing. She lives and works in Los Angeles\, CA.
