She exemplifies the elegance and eloquence of a golden era\, while bridging the new soul movement of her fellow contemporaries\, with a transcending grace rarely found within those artists of today.\nA native of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, she was born to accomplished musicians Michael and Joyce Oby. Relocated to Memphis\, Michaelyn began singing at an early age gaining the title as “the little girl with the big voice.” She graced the Memphis Jazz scene as house vocalist for The Sax on Sunday Jazz Jam\, where she was featured on WUMR’s 91.7 Jazz Hot Spot. Immediately after\, Michaelyn was singing every week on the historic Beale Street at The King’s Palace Café\, the only jazz dinner club on the strip.\nIn 2019\, Michaelyn relocated to Chicago\, IL\, and is proud to call this great city her new home. For several years she performed while cruising up and down The Mississippi River and its tributaries on the American Queen Steamboat as one of its featured/Guest Entertainers. She is especially excited to add her extensive musical repertoire two solo shows “Feeling Good” and “Lady Sings Ms.Ross: A Tribute to Diana Ross” where she pays homage to those influential artists and genres she has grown to love.\nABOUT DINAH WASHINGTON\n\nDinah Washington was an American singer and pianist\, one of the most popular Black female recording artists of the 1950s. Primarily a jazz vocalist\, she performed and recorded in a wide variety of styles including blues\, R&B\, and traditional pop music\, and gave herself the title of “Queen of the Blues”. She was also known as “Queen of the Jukeboxes”. She was a 1986 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame\, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Jeremy and Dermel Warren\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, November 15th\, 2026\nDoors open at 5:30 pm | Show begins at 6:00 pm\n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nJoin us for November’s installment of Strictly Jazz Entertainment’s “Strictly Jazz” Series as NYC-based duo Jeremy and Dermel Warren tackle the music of Betty Carter and Elvin Jones! \nABOUT JD WARREN AND THE RUDIMENT\nJD Warren is a NYC based jazz group lead by husband and wife duo Jeremy & Dermel Warren. This group was formed in 2015 and has released an album June 1\, 2016 titled “Jeremy Warren-I Can Do All Things” that has received “Most Highly Recommended” from critics such as Jazz Times\, Improvijazzation Nation\, All About Jazz\, AXS\, and many others. The Rudiment has performed in some of the top venues in the NYC area such as the Blue Note NYC\, Minton’s Harlem\, Club Bonafide\, Cornelia St Café\, and many more. The Rudiment performed at the 2016 Jazz at The Buckman Center in Memphis\, TN; 2017 Katy Jazz Festival in Katy\, TX (where they also put on masterclasses for high school/college students and held workshops for high school jazz bands); Jazz in the Park in Patterson\, NJ for 3 years running; plus many more. They performed at the Made in New York Gala along side jazz greats Randy Brecker\, Fransico Mela\, and John Patituci. Drummer\, Jeremy Warren\, composes and arranges for the group while vocalist\, Dermel Warren\, handles the lyrical composition. J&D bring their deep Soul & Gospel roots mixed with NYC’s Hip-Hop & Jazz influences to create their own unique style.\nABOUT BETTY CARTER\nBetty Carter developed a legendary reputation\, along with Art Blakey\, as one of the great mentors for young jazz musicians. Equally legendary was her singing prowess\, creating a distinctive style of improvisation that could transcend any song.\nCarter’s bands served a dual purpose: to create her own great music and to help young musicians develop their craft. Many of the musicians who passed through her groups went on to lead their own groups\, such as Geri Allen\, Stephen Scott\, Don Braden\, and Christian McBride. She also developed a mentoring program called Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead through links with organizations like the International Association for Jazz Education\, 651 Arts\, and the Kennedy Center. The program was a one- to two-week teaching seminar where nationally selected promising young jazz musicians learned from Carter and other seasoned musicians\, culminating in a final concert of instructors and students together. Jazz Ahead was one of Carter’s proudest achievements\, and she worked with the program up until her death. She received the National Medal of Arts in 1997.\nABOUT ELVIN JONES\n\nElvin Jones was an American jazz drummer of the post-bop era. Most famously a member of John Coltrane’s quartet\, with whom he recorded from late 1960 to late 1965\, Jones appeared on such albums as My Favorite Things\, A Love Supreme\, Ascension and Live at Birdland. After 1966\, Jones led his own trio\, and later larger groups under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. His brothers Hank and Thad were also celebrated jazz musicians with whom he occasionally recorded. Elvin was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995. In his The History of Jazz\, jazz historian and critic Ted Gioia calls Jones “one of the most influential drummers in the history of jazz”.
