SUMMARY:Jake Blount presented by Folk All Y’all and Crosstown Arts
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, February 5\, 2023\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $20 (purchase tickets here) \nJake Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. He is a scholar of Black American music\, speaking ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle\, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker\, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes\, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Each song Blount plays is chosen for a reason – because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. The more we learn about where we’ve been\, the better equipped we are to face the future – a future imagined by connecting Black tradition with the environmental crisis\, centering the questions\, “What would Black music sound like after climate change renders most of the world uninhabitable? What gods would this community praise\, and what stories would they tell?” The answers come through the bedrock of Blount’s voice\, channeling the ragged triumph of a people still standing after centuries of continuous confrontations with Death. \nMinimum ticket price is $20 but you can name-your-own price above that if you’re feeling it. 100% of ticket revenue goes to our artists (you can see where any fees go in the check-out breakdown). Yep\, all of it. Folk All Y’all is volunteer-run and subscriber-supported. Shows are presented in partnership with Crosstown Arts at The Green Room in Crosstown Concourse. \nAbout The Green Room: Operated by Crosstown Arts\, The Green Room is committed to providing the best possible environment for the two most important components of a musical performance: the artists’ work and the audience’s listening experience. \nAbout Folk All Y’all: Intimate\, attentive performances by exceptional singer-songwriters\, proudly presented in Memphis\, Folk All Y’all is a public\, nonprofit listening room series supported by our pledges from our community.

SUMMARY:The Black Opry Revue
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, February 10\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nBlack Opry is a home for Black artists and Black fans of country\, blues\, folk\, and Americana music. Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since its conception. For just as long\, we have been overlooked and disregarded in the genre by fans and executives. Black Opry wants to change that. We invite you to discover\, support and enjoy the Black artists that make magic in this space. One of the most valuable aspects of country music is its versatility and diversity in sound. Country\, blues\, folk\, and Americana music often overlap or weave together — these artists explore all of those sounds and intersections. The Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to these genres. \nTae Lewis \nThe emerging country singer/songwriter Tae Lewis doesn’t sell short when it comes to his creation of country music. The North Carolina native started his roots by singing in his grandfather’s church at the age of 5. In 2016 he began to emerge in his own element of what he wanted to create for his audience as a country artist with one of his first singles “Good Luvin”. \n“Good Luvin” brought success in being placed in the hit sitcom Shameless\, which brought his artistry to a whole new level of people acknowledging who he really is. Now\, a Nashville native\, he’s been able to write with some amazing songwriters as well as being able to be an opener for some incredible artists this summer. \nTwitter: @Taelewis_ Instagram: @TaeLewisMusic_ \nTylar Bryant \nTylar Bryant is a soulful country recording artist whose path took him on a journey to take the stage in the country music arena. Championing the challenge\, where no one saw him coming\, Tylar is a new contender who’s in it to win it. \nThe former MMA fighter changed his career path to pursue a passion that caught him completely by surprise. He laid down his gloves to pick up a songwriter’s pen and a guitar. In a courageous leap of faith to chase his dream\, Tylar moved to Nashville in 2019. \nKnown for his charismatic stage presence\, electric live performances\, and infamous beer showers among his audiences\, onlookers would never expect Tylar Bryant to be anything but a country music entertainer. \nTylar grew up listening to an array of music from rap (Zro\, Tupac\, Biggie\, Hawk\, Pimp C) and the tunes that echoed in the background at his grand mom’s home (Al Green\, Luther Vandross\, The Temptations\, Diana Ross). \nThe Texas native prides himself in his authenticity and ability to infuse a mix of styles and sounds. Influenced by some of country music’s greatest voices and performers (such as Jim Reeves\, Randy Travis and Chris Young)\, Bryant marries modern and traditional country sounds with rock and R&B grooves for an added twist. \nPlaying more than 80 shows a year\, Tylar’s canvassed the Lone Star State. In 2017\, Tylar recorded his debut EP\, titled Don’t Let Go\, in Nashville co-producing the project that features all original tunes. \nTwitter: @TylarBryant Instagram: @TylarBryantMusic \nLayna \nLAYNA is a singer\, songwriter\, producer from Northeast Ohio. Inspired by Tracy Chapman\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Aretha Franklin\, Stevie Nicks\, Dolly Parton\, and more; and she believes ‘Communication\,’ as well as the legendary voices mentioned before\, are what helped her find her sound. \nInstagram: @LaynaOfficial

SUMMARY:Making Movies
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Making Movies in The Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, February 23\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nBio: English (Spanish below) \nMaking Movies is a psychedelic Panamanian band that makes American music with an asterisk: because Making Movies’ sound encompasses the entirety of the Americas. It’s through this broader perspective that Making Movies crunches classic rock into Latin American rhythms — African-derived percussion and styles like rumba\, merengue\, mambo and cumbia — in a way that feels oddly familiar\, yet delivers the invigorating chills of hearing something singularly special. \nOver the course of their career\, the quartet has turned heads as a Tiny Desk newcomer (with “A La Deriva”)\, a voice for immigrant rights (with “I Am Another You” which reached #3 on Billboard‘s Latin Pop Album chart)\, and as a co-writer alongside salsa icon Rubén Blades (with Latin GRAMMY nominated song “No Te Calles”). \nMaking Movies has toured extensively\, appearing with the likes of Arcade Fire\, Rubén Blades\, Los Lobos\, Hurray For the Riff Raff\, Bomba Estereo\, Galactic\, Flor De Toloache\, and Thievery Corporation. The band’s fourth album XOPA was just released on L.A.-based label Cósmica Artists.
