Young up-and-coming musicians and local jazz veterans alike join together for spontaneous music making\, sharing the stage as they tackle the expansive body of repertoire found within the jazz idiom. The Green Room Jazz Jam strives to provide an inclusive and collaborative environment where jazz musicians of all ages and backgrounds may perform\, network\, and interact together in the interest of further fostering Memphis’ diverse music scene. \nAlex Upton is a Memphis-based saxophonist\, composer\, and educator with a deep passion for musics both old and new. Alex is a nationally awarded soloist that has performed and recorded with artists such as Rahsaan Barber\, Rachel Therrien\, Ted Ludwig\, Baron Tymas\, Stephen Anderson\, and James Sexton. Awarded first prize in the 2022 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, Alex has performed at both JEN and NASA Conferences\, and has performed at regionally renowned venues including the Brooks Museum of Art\, Crosstown Arts Green Room\, Durham’s Sharp Nine Gallery\, and Bond Brothers Eastside. Their work as a performer and composer is featured on Summit Records with the 360 Jazz Initiative\, and under their own name on their newest full-length album release “Portraits of a Silent Moment”.

DESCRIPTION:Salo Pallini: “Some Air” Record Release Show\nThe Crosstown Arts Theater\nFriday\, December 11th\, 2026\nDoors open at 6:30 pm | Show starts at 7:30 pm\n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\n\nSalo Pallini began as a four-piece instrumental group from Memphis\, TN\, built around an unusual idea: create a musical accompaniment to Kurt Vonnegut’s 1959 novel The Sirens of Titan. The result was The Sirens of Titan: A Preemptive Scoring\, an 11-song debut recorded in the historic home of renowned Civil War historian Shelby Foote. The record established the band’s self-described sound of “progressive Latin space country” and the larger concept of preemptively scoring literary works bound for the screen. \n\nFor its second record\, Salo Pallini is taking a very different approach. While the band’s debut was entirely instrumental\, the new album places the human voice at the center of the music\, with a different singer featured on every song. Rather than settling on a single frontperson\, the band has built each track around the character of its guest vocalist\, allowing the record to shift voices\, perspectives and personalities from song to song while retaining Salo Pallini’s distinct musical identity.\nThe new record also marks the addition of Stephen Williams as an official member of the band\, joining Landon Moore\, John Whittemore\, Pat Fusco and Danny Banks. Williams has taken on the lion’s share of the vocal composition duties for the project\, helping transform music originally developed by the band into songs built around melody\, lyrics and voice.\n\nThe result is both a departure from and an expansion of Salo Pallini’s original concept. The cinematic\, genre-bending approach of the first record remains\, but the addition of vocalists opens the band’s music into something broader — a record where the sound of Salo Pallini remains the constant\, while a different voice takes the lead with each song.

Joining them for a micro set will be Me & Leah backed by the Hand Me Downs. Other special guests to be announced and don’t be surprised if the band plays some Christmas classics. This show is all ages and not to be missed.\ \n\nJEFF HULETT\nFrom the outside\, Jeff Hulett might seem like a late-blooming guitarist and songwriter. But if you ask any of his fellow musicians they’ll tell you he was writing songs and playing music long before he put pen to paper or strummed a chord.\nHis unique style landed him in the band Snowglobe. Over his many years with this Memphis-based institution\, Hulett regularly contributed melodies\, lyrics and arrangements to many of the tunes in their prolific cannon. You can even hear a few of his originals in their discography.\nDuring his long tenure with Snowglobe\, Hulett continued to hone his own voice and develop his own creative projects. He began playing guitar more\, and writing his own lyrics. This dedication and passion led to his collaboration with Leah Keys in the band Me & Leah. They released an eponymous and beautiful CD in 2016 featuring nine original folk tunes. Then in 2019\, Me & Leah added Jonathan Schallert to the mix to record and partially release a digital copy of their 7 inch Most of Your Life. Both albums were engineered by accomplished mainstays Toby Vest and Pete Mathews of High/Low and Andrew McCalla\, respectively.\nBut it was when the pandemic struck that Hulett really hit his stride as a songwriter. All alone and with nowhere to go\, using an old version of Garageband\, he started creating original tracks and collaborating with more and more musicians\, writers\, and other creators. He was one of the first artists in Memphis–or even the world–to give a voice to our collective feelings when he released his album Safe @ Home w/ Jacob Church early in the pandemic. That record–a seven-song exploration of the new normal we were all just beginning to live–resonated around the globe. It even landed a spot on The English Show\, a weekly podcast out of Basel\, Switzerland.\nThen\, after going on to release two solo albums on Small Batch Records\, Hulett reconnected with old friends Melissa Goodwin Shepherd and Adam Poor. They formed the band Restless Townies. Their first album\, Miles Away\, was released in April 2021\, and the trio has continued to release several EPs.
