SUMMARY:Brantley Ellzey: Reflection + Ritual + Refuge
DESCRIPTION:On view through January 25\, 2026Crosstown Arts GalleriesFree and open to the public\nTues-Friday from 11-8pm and Saturday and Sunday from noon-6pm \nIn Reflection + Ritual + Refuge\, artist Brantley Ellzey weaves a world where repetition becomes remembrance\, where reflection fractures into beauty\, and where the quiet\, persistent act of making becomes a form of resistance. \nAcross media and gesture\, Ellzey explores how we survive: by circling back\, by touching what has been lost\, by naming what others ignore. Rolling\, collecting\, documenting\, layering—these are his rituals. Some are personal. Some are political. All are acts of reckoning. \nThe spiral is his recurring form. It turns through the exhibition like a silent logic\, natural\, ancestral\, unstoppable. It is found in architecture\, in emotion\, in protest\, in paper. Each gesture becomes a structure. Each structure becomes a kind of refuge. \nThis is work that blurs the line between the sacred and the ordinary\, between the deeply interior and the publicly defiant. There are no beginnings or endings here\, only movement\, only return. \nReflection + Ritual + Refuge is not a single story\, but a field of them. It invites the viewer to look closer\, to enter slowly\, to see how something small\, repeated\, can become something vast. \nBrantley Ellzey is a Memphis-based artist known for transforming everyday printed materials into sculptural works that explore memory\, place\, and cultural identity. Raised in Osceola\, Arkansas\, and trained at Tulane University in Theater and Architecture\, Ellzey brings a multidisciplinary approach that blends architecture\, design\, and storytelling. His work appears in collections across the country\, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital\, Steelcase\, Conde Nast\, and Nicole Kidman’s production headquarters.

SUMMARY:Autumn Defense + opener Dream Journal
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Defense + opener Dream Journal \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nFriday\, November 7\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:30 pm \n$25 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAfter a ten-year break from the studio\, The Autumn Defense pick up right where they left off on their long-anticipated sixth album\, Here and Nowhere. Infusing the band’s breezy\, harmony-drenched take on Laurel Canyon with lush orchestration and psychedelic flourishes\, the collection is dreamy and impressionistic\, full of warm\, inviting tunes as beautiful as they are bittersweet. Like much of the group’s catalog\, it’s an album full of mystery and wonder\, a rich\, open-hearted work that nods to everything from Nick Drake and John Martyn to Carole King and David Crosby as it contemplates the passage of time\, reckoning with what we lose\, what we gain\, and who we become along the way. \nFounded by core duo John Stirratt and Pat Sansone—and now featuring longtime rhythm section James Haggerty and Greg Wieczorek—The Autumn Defense first took shape in New Orleans\, where the band recorded their 2001 debut\, The Green Hour. While the group has at times been pigeonholed as a Wilco side project (Stirratt is a founding member\, and Sansone joined around the release of 2004’s A Ghost Is Born)\, The Autumn Defense’s sound has always been decidedly more West Coast than alt-country\, drawing comparisons to The Beach Boys\, The Byrds\, and Love over the course of five critically acclaimed studio albums. NPR hailed the group’s “timeless pop songs\,” while Rolling Stone called their music “gorgeous” and “delightful\,” and the New York Times praised their delivery as “warm and radiant.” \nOpening the show is duo Dream Journal! \nDream Journal is a collaboration between Rachael Grant and her husband\, Robby (Vending Machine\, Mellotron Variations). He performs songs from his solo catalog and creates swirly loops while Rachael reads excerpts from their dream journals.

SUMMARY:Cameron Bethany: "YGOMN" Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:YGOMN: The Listening Session \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nFriday\, November 14\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:30 pm \n$30 in advance (plus fees) | $36 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nJoin us for an intimate\, genre-bending evening as Cameron Bethany unveils YOUGETONMYNERVES\, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2017 debut YOUMAKEMENERVOUS. This isn’t just a listening session; it’s a ritual. A sonic reckoning of faith\, fun\, and forbidden romance. \nExpect live performances\, a deep-dive Q&A\, and moments you weren’t meant to hear\, until now. \nCameron Bethany is a musical and visual artist\, an enchantment in the flesh and a perpetual student of the craft. Born into a family of musicians\, creativity runs through him like melody through a favorite song. His sound? Soulful with a twist—think R&B kissed by rock\, shaded with experimental tones. He calls it Mod-Fusion\, a genre-blurring approach that bends expectation and feeling in equal measure. \nA gentle disruptor where light and shadow meet\, Cameron’s live performances are less about entertainment and more about transformation. Whether in an intimate room or on a grand stage\, his goal remains the same: to alchemize emotion and leave audiences feeling seen\, stirred\, and spellbound. \nCameron’s musical work has been featured in commercials for brands like Gillette and the Netflix series Trinkets. As a visual artist\, his artwork has appeared on the Peacock series Bel-Air\, three original pieces setting the tone for modern storytelling. \nLater this year\, Cameron will release his first full-length album\, titled YOU GET ON MY NERVES. The title may be cheeky\, but the message promises to cut deep.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series Presents: The Urania Trilogy by Tav Falco in the Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:The Urania Trilogy by Tav Falco\, with an original live score by Alex Greene & the Rolling Head Orchestra \nThe Crosstown Theater @ Crosstown Arts \nThursday\, November 20th\, 2025 \nDoors open at 6:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:00 pm \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAlex Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra\, Memphis’ most adept practitioners of the cinematic live score\, join forces with the great Tav Falco to interpret his filmic troika\, The Urania Trilogy. Shot in Austria\, the semi-silent film was “made for those hungry to submerge themselves in Orphic mysteries…It explores myth\, memory\, and identity through dreamlike structures – evoking shifting realities where the past overtakes the present\, and the present overtakes the past\, while already hurling itself into the future.” \nGreene and RHO are well-versed in scoring silent classics\, from Aelita\, Queen of Mars to The Cameraman to Häxan\, all with Greene’s original cinematic jazz compositions. The orchestra features some of Memphis’ finest players of both straight ahead and out jazz\, and includes one of the region’s premier theremin players\, Kate Tayler. \nFalco is touring the world with The Urania Trilogy\, with screenings in New York\, London\, Madrid\, and beyond. Now he brings his vision back to where it all began\, in Memphis\, where his unapproachable Panther Burns were born nearly half a century ago. Always a compelling visual artist\, Falco has\, over recent years\, perfected this mysterious film that could have been made anytime between 1927 and tomorrow. Now\, teaming up with Greene\, an erstwhile Panther Burn himself\, the film combines Falco’s vision with the power of live music and Greene’s haunting compositions.

Her work has been described as “mesmerizing\,” evoking the feeling of being on a stormy island\, in a colorful nightmare\, or in a dramatic storybook. Her live performances are vivid and magical\, like if Regina Spektor played in a coffee shop with a fantasy-cinematic twist. From her very first note\, Kathy conveys that something magical and wondrous is happening. Each song is like its own little dramatic play with compelling emotional arcs that sometimes fall into a dreamlike stream of consciousness. Audiences have repeatedly stated that “no one else sounds like her\,” as Kathy has carved a style that is uniquely her own. In 2023\, Kathy’s music video to her song\, “Strange Child\,” was in the international Indie Memphis Film Festival. Kathy’s upcoming work\, “A Vivid\, Magic\, Scene\,” is a collection of songs about processing the past and coming to terms with the present\, drawing upon nature/fantasy themes. \nAybil (pronounced Abel) is a Memphis born singer\, songwriter\, observer\, and peacemaker. Writing since an early age\, she works to express the beauty of joy\, sadness and the moments in the middle. Since making her debut in 2020 with the haunting\, introspective single “Jordan Poole”\, Aybil has continued to self-release genre-blending projects rooted in a love for storytelling. Her sound draws comparisons to the inspiring soulful stylings of Bill Withers and India Arie\, while maintaining a vision all her own. \nAudiences can expect an unforgettable night marked by emotionally stirring instrumentation\, raw vocals and authentic lyricism.

SUMMARY:Above Jupiter: "Abscission" Record Release Show (+ opener The Narrows)
DESCRIPTION:Above Jupiter: “Abscission” Record Release Show (+ opener The Narrows)\nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nSaturday\, November 22\, 2025  \nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM  \n$12 in advance (plus fees) | $15 at the door  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAbove Jupiter celebrate the release of their full-length album ‘Abscission’ along with Memphis indie rock favorites the Narrows. The new vinyl album will be hot off the press and available at the show. \nContemporary art rock band Above Jupiter is back with their second full-length album\, and first after signing with Red Curtain Records. Described by The Memphis Flyer as “a beat-driven soundscape with equal parts slashing guitar\, skronky synth\, and cool singing that lives in a kind of timeless pop utopia\,” ‘Abscission’ expands on the sound of their self-titled debut with elements of lofi\, R&B\, nu-jazz\, and progressive influences. The result is a more mature sound\, which says a lot about a band whose members are all still in high school. \n‘Abscission’ is a conceptual album that tells the story of main characters Eleanor\, McNeil\, Evergreen\, and Elise\, with each song offering a view into the Shakespearean-style tragedy that unfolds as the album progresses. A special edition of the lilac-colored vinyl LP includes a zine booklet that tells the story through lyrics\, paintings\, and prose. \nDeparting from their first LP’s home studio produced approach\, the band knew these songs would benefit from the analog warmth of a professional studio\, and they found the perfect home at Memphis Magnetic Recording Co. All songs were tracked live in the room using the studio’s collection of vintage instruments\, giving the album a timeless sound that complements the craftsmanship of Above Jupiter’s songs.
