DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “The Molasses Man & Other Delta Tales” by Ahmad George in the West Gallery.\n \nThe West Gallery at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe Molasses Man & Other Delta Tales serves as an anthology of stories based off of Ahmad George’s life and experiences with people they’ve encountered here and not. These works feature scenes with existing and non-existing figures from folklore and mythology sourced from the American South\, elsewhere\, and created. \nAhmad George is a painter and multimedia artist from Memphis\, Tennessee. They’ve shown at NADA Miami as well as national and international group and solo exhibitions.Through their work\, they explore the liminal space between reality\, mythology\, folklore\, and self. Their worldbuilding thins the veil of this world by mixing  imagery of the American South (mostly scenes from Tennessee and Mississippi) with local and sourced myths from different parts of the world. Oftentimes\, they use people from their own life to be the protagonists of these narratives. Major themes they explore in their paintings currently include generational history\,transformation\, consequence\, and spiritual alchemy.

The houses become more than just a residence\, but become individuals themselves. The shadows start to blur the line of where the walls stop and where a presence might begin. \nHave you ever touched a door knob and thought it felt like shaking someone’s hand? Instead of treating it like a utilitarian tool? \nOne can start to feel their identity fuse with the walls around them day after day. This new presence\, which we often call “home”\, silently witnesses all of our joys and sorrows\, and the passage of time. They are the only ones who have a deep understanding of our solitude and shared narratives. \nThese pieces are carved wood\, masked in layers of house paint\, and nailed together in a similar fashion as the places that house them. This is done to connect the viewer to the physicality and craftsmanship inherent in the creation of homes.\n\nNoah Thomas ​​Miller is Illinois-born but finds his home in Memphis. He works in multivalent mediums\, whether that be woodworking\, film\, sound installation\, or a combination of materials\, to preserve memory and tell stories. \nHis work is constantly deconstructing and reconstructing a scene to find its essence. It’s easier to recall a feeling than the details of an image. One can find that in most of his work — stripping the image of detail (or color) and isolating the tone of a scene to tell the narrative itself. \nHe attended Memphis College of Art and has continued his practice through work with museums\, film programs\, art institutions\, and most importantly at home.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out” by Coe Lapossy on the East Pop-Out Walls.\n \nThe East Pop-Out Walls at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe first time Coe Lapossy heard someone talk about compartmentalizing their life\, so they could make all the separate and demanding things work together\, theyI were a kid watching a television interview with Jodie Foster. It was the typical interview question\, “How do you handle such a busy life? How do you accomplish all this?” Foster very nonchalantly explained that she just compartmentalizes everything. Lapossy remembers realizing that this was a completely unfamiliar way of being. They did not understand what Jodie was talking about\, and they did not believe they could live that way. But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out is about “no compartments.” Everything is mashing together in life all the time — and while Lapossy longs for stability and order — it’s all happening at once and they love how that feels — what that allows for. Not to be confused with multitasking\, this is a kind of nurtured chaos. \nThrough a resistance to the tenants of modernism\, Coe Lapossy centers erased histories and marginalized labor. They create work that revels in the subversive\, how it sneaks in and makes change\, how it works undetected because it must. They revisit artifacts of queerness wedged within a seemingly straight world\, choosing these references\, linking narratives from various times throughout history\, things forgotten\, erased\, messages that “flew under the radar.” With the reuse of these artifacts they create a meditation on what bodies we value\, how we memorialize\, and what/who survives under the conditions we create.

Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne\, Tina Weymouth\, Chris Frantz\, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell\, Alex Weir\, Steve Scales\, Lynn Mabry\, and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads’ most memorable songs. \nPresented in collaboration with Memphis Listening Lab.  \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

This group of free jazz improvisers came together in New York in 2021 with a plan to spontaneously compose new folk music\, a task made richer by the diverse cultural backgrounds each member brings to the table. Yamamoto originates from Kyoto\, Japan; Fowler from Arkansas; Hirsh is a New York native currently living in the Minnesota wilderness; and Parker is a key figure in the New York avant-garde movement. \nThis concert is the first stop on a national tour that will take the group along the Mississippi River to Iowa and Minnesota. It is a special occasion for the quartet\, celebrating the release of their second album\, “Live at Vision Festival XXVI\,” and launching a national tour. Attendees can look forward to an evening that subtly blends jazz and folk elements with collaborative improvisation and the varied influences each member adds to the quartet’s collective sound. \nThis performance is made possible with the support of Jazz Road\, a national initiative of South Arts\, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  \n\nThe Musicians \nWilliam Parker\nWilliam Parker first came to public attention playing with pianist Cecil Taylor. He played with saxophonist David S. Ware from 1989 until his last concert performance in 2011. He’s led the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra and In Order to Survive and is a member of the Other Dimensions In Music and many of Peter Brötzmann’s groups. He’s closely associated with the Vision Festival. \nEri Yamamoto\nEri Yamamoto has been sharing her uniquely lyrical and evocative music with listeners in the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, Japan\, Africa\, Jamaica\, and Australia. “She has a deft sense of harmony and note selection…her virtuosity never gets in the way of playing it straight from the heart.” -Daniel A. Brown\, DownBeat “My hat’s off to her… already she’s found her own voice.” – Herbie Hancock \nChad Fowler\nChad Fowler started his music career in Memphis\, Tennessee\, playing soul music alongside some of the city’s most revered artists\, such as Ann Peebles and the Hi Rhythm section\, and then in a number of avant-garde jazz groups. He has played and recorded with Alvin Fielder\, William Parker\, Brian Blade\, Reggie Workman\, Andrew Cyrille\, Matthew Shipp\, Douglas Ewart\, Kidd Jordan\, Christopher Parker\, and WC Anderson. \nSteve Hirsh\nSteve Hirsh plays music on the drumset. Like it was a piano. Or a symphony orchestra. His touch can be light as a caress or as intense as a jack hammer. In his hands (and feet)\, the drum set is a kaleidoscope of colors\, sounds and moods. Steve has been fortunate to play with\, among others\, Eri Yamamoto\, William Parker\, Joel Futterman\, Matthew Shipp\, Luke Stewart\, Dave Sewelson\, Steve Swell\, Mara Rosenbloom\, Gabby Fluke-Mogul\, Sean Conly\, Matt Lavelle\, Babatunde Lea\, George Cartwright\, Christopher Parker\, Kelley Hurt\, Donald Washington\, Chad Fowler\, Douglas Ewart\, and Zoh Amba. Daughter of two-time GRAMMY™ award winning Zydeco luminary Terrance Simien\, Marcella was practically born onstage and grew up immersed in sound and performance. Visits to the family home from legends such as David Hidalgo of Los Lobos or Taj Mahal\, who once sang her “Happy Birthday\,” were not uncommon.  \nSimien holds a degree from Memphis College of Art\, which is what originally brought her to Memphis\, Tennessee. An accomplished classical performer as well\, he’s often called upon to augment the woodwind section of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. His performing past also includes five years as a member of the internationally acclaimed Carla Bley Band and appearances and recordings with Bobby McFerrin\, Mose Allison and Nat Adderley. \nSince 1990 Dagradi has been a Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Loyola University in New Orleans where he maintains a large saxophone studio\, teaches classes in improvisation\, and directs various ensembles.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Paul Taylor with Three Springs in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, November 17\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nLongtime Memphis musician Paul Taylor is returning home to play his first show back in the Bluff City in over three and a half years! \nHe’s bringing his brand new band\, Three Springs\, along with him all the way down from his new home of Door County\, Wisconsin\, to help him perform material he’s written during those last few years\, which has been greatly inspired by the vastly different northern environment. \nPaul Taylor was a mainstay on the Memphis music scene for over 30 years- until he relocated to Door County\, Wisconsin\, during the great shake up of the 2020 pandemic. \nAs a highly in-demand drummer\, bassist\, and guitarist\, he’s been a sideman for a wildly divergent list of artists including Ann Peebles\, Reba Russell\, The PRVLG\, Hope Clayburn\, Mighty Souls Brass Band\, Eric Gales\, Shawn Lane\, Amy LaVere\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Sons Of Mudboy\, Van Duren\, Chuck Prophet\, Robert Ellis and many more — in addition to putting out three solo records under his own name and three releases under his moniker\, New Memphis Colorways. \nHis last performance in Memphis was over three years ago at The Green Room in Crosstown Arts\, a record release party for the New Memphis Colorways record entitled “The Music Stands.” \nIn 2021\, Paul made a major departure from his more song-oriented records when he released an experimental funk/jazz record\, also under the nom de plume New Memphis Colorways\, entitled “It Is What It Isn’t”\, which earned an editor’s pick in Downbeat and favorable reviews from Jazziz and other national publications.  \nEarlier this year\, an experimental instrumental music collaboration between Paul and longtime collaborators Luther Dickinson and Steve Selvidge\, entitled MEM_MODS Vol 1 (Peabody Records)\, was released to much critical acclaim. \nA forthcoming New Memphis Colorways EP\, “Let The Mystery Be” is due out on October 13\, 2023. \nThree Springs is a brand-new indie rock-ish\, at times slightly funky and experimental\, band out of Door County\, Wisconsin. \nThe group was formed by Memphis transplant Paul Taylor as an outlet for many of his songs and instrumentals\, which have previously only existed in recorded form on solo releases under his own name (and his nom de plume New Memphis Colorways)\, but has turned into a vehicle for new material written specifically for\, and with\, the band.  \nRounding out the trio are Door County native Shepley Frater on bass and Minominee\, Michigan\, native Adam Cain on drums.

Accompanied by a live jazz band\, this will be a special opportunity to experience Permanently Blackface the way the artist intended: in one sitting\, with undivided attention directed at its narrator. Witness the bold\, fearless inversion of minstrel tradition in this poignant commentary on the Black Experience.  \nIntroducing himself as Mr. Blackface\, Lukah identifies the true artist’s responsibility to hold a mirror to the listener in order to confront and disarm taboos.
