SUMMARY:“Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line”
DESCRIPTION:On view April 22\, 2023\, to August 6\, 2023\nCrosstown Arts Galleries\nFree and open to the public \nGallery Hours\nTuesday–Friday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.\nSaturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.\nSunday: noon– 6 p.m. \n“Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” by Khara Woods presents a collection of paintings\, sculpture and creative devices developed since 2016. The works examine the creation of movement and texture focusing on a restricted set of grids\, bold colors and shapes inspired by basic geometry. Within these confines\, there are arrangements that intertwine\, shift and vibrate across canvas and wood.\n\nKhara Woods was born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee. She comes from a family of artists and craftspeople. She continues the tradition with her geometric abstract paintings and sculpture. Woods began working as a public artist in 2015\, creating and installing murals. In 2016\, she began her studio practice. Woods works primarily with wood\, using it as a canvas or to make 3D art. Mural Arts Philadelphia commissioned Woods as a lead artist for its Art & Environment Initiative in 2019. She completed her first large-scale data visualization mural\, “Basin Portraits\,” in October of that year. She created paintings and mini sculptural studies for her first solo exhibition in October 2020 at the Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University. Some of Woods’ latest op-art-inspired paintings and a layered wood sculpture were displayed in the Axis exhibition at Hilliard Art Museum in Lafayette\, Louisiana in 2021. Since then\, Woods is continuing to develop her studio practice and making more 3D works. and State Fellowship Program\, and was the finalist for the Southern Prize.

SUMMARY:“Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas”
DESCRIPTION:On view April 22\, 2023\, to August 6\, 2023\nCrosstown Arts Galleries\nFree and open to the public \nGallery Hours\nTuesday–Friday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.\nSaturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.\nSunday: noon– 6 p.m. \n“Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas” is composed of videos from McLean Fahnestock’s Stratagem series\, where the sea and sky flip and merge to generate a new\, seductive yet false horizon. Stratagems are plans or schemes that are designed to deceive. Usually referring to warfare\, they are a well-executed artifice upon an enemy. Working with her interest in desire as it manifests in the landscape\, these works present the ways that our desires can open a door to our ultimate deception.  \nIn a presentation unique to Crosstown Arts\, the videos have been loaded into a custom program that randomly chooses the video and the length of time the video will loop before the next one is randomly chosen to play. Viewers will have a shifting experience that will never repeat. \nThe title for the exhibition comes from the first of the 36 Stratagems – a 6th century Chinese text covering political\, military\, and social strategy written by an unknown scholar.   \nMcLean Fahnestock works with the dynamically changing landscape. Her practice is centered on our desire for specific visual and physical landscapes as manifested through the concept of paradise. This has led to investigations into how this desire has been the catalyst for climate change\, colonialism\, and ecocide. She utilizes digital forms of collage\, video\, and new media. McLean received a BFA from Middle Tennessee State University and MFA from California State University Long Beach. Her work has been exhibited and screened across the United States and internationally. Her work was selected for Off the Screen at the 57th Ann Arbor Film Festival. She has been an artist in residence at Stove Works in Chattanooga\, Tennessee\, and The Lock-Up in Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia. McLean keeps her studio in Old Hickory\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: FIVE EASY PIECES
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Five Easy Pieces at Crosstown Theater. \nBob Rafelson / 1970 / 98 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nFollowing Jack Nicholson’s breakout supporting turn in Easy Rider\,director Bob Rafelson devised a powerful leading role for the new star in the searing character study Five Easy Pieces. Nicholson plays the now iconic cad Bobby Dupea\, a shiftless thirtysomething oil rigger and former piano prodigy immune to any sense of responsibility\, who returns to his upper-middle-class childhood home\, blue-collar girlfriend (Karen Black\, in an Oscar-nominated role) in tow\, to see his estranged\, ailing father. Moving in its simplicity and gritty in its textures\, Five Easy Pieces is a lasting example of early 1970s American alienation. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: BLUE VELVET
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Blue Velvet at Crosstown Theater. \nDavid Lynch / 1986 / 121 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nHome from college\, Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) makes an unsettling discovery: a severed human ear\, lying in a field. SUMMARY:PLOT/TWIST (Part 1) feat. Blueshift Ensemble\, Bluff City Liars\, and ICEBERG New Music
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents PLOT/TWIST (Part 1) feat. Blueshift Ensemble\, Bluff City Liars\, and ICEBERG New Music in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, August 17\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Concert begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $10 General Admission | $5 students \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nICEBERG New Music partners with Blueshift Ensemble and Memphis’ premier improv group Bluff City Liars to create a new program of music and improvised drama. Ten pieces of never-before-heard music will inspire ten never-before-seen plays\, performed by some of Memphis’ best contemporary musicians and improvisers. \nThese concerts will feature Memphis premieres by Drake Andersen\, Victor Baez\, Stephanie Ann Boyd\, Alex Burtzos\, Yu-Chun Chien\, Derek Cooper\, Jack Frerer\, Max Grafe\, Gala Flagello\, Robin Haigh\, Paul Novak\, and Harry Stafylakis. Like all ICEBERG / Blueshift Ensemble events\, the two performances will be followed with an opportunity to talk with the composers\, musicians\, and improvisers. \nAugust 17\, 2023: PLOT/TWIST (Part 1) features music for woodwinds and piano composed by Victor Baez\, Jack Frerer\, Harry Stafylakis\, Yu-Chun Chien\, Robin Haigh\, and Gala Flagello. \nABOUT ICEBERG NEW MUSIC\nICEBERG New Music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. ICEBERG’s mission is to promote the idea that substance\, not surface\, is the heart of music creation and perception. The collective’s ten member composers hail from different schools of thought and cultivate radically different sounds – from musical theater and indie rock to avant-garde sounds and electronic installations – but their contrasting musical languages belie a shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. \nABOUT BLUFF CITY LIARS\nBluff City Liars was formed in late 2017 as a project between four friends hoping to explore long form improv comedy – at the time a very rare commodity in Memphis. Quickly\, the group felt the spark of inspiration catch fire\, and Bluff City Liars was formed. \nOver time\, the troupe has grown both in size and in fan base. We run multiple monthly shows and offer workshops. We’ve also been signed as an associate company at TheatreWorks\, and we’ve even produced a show featuring Kevin McDonald of Kids In The Hall. \nWe provide high octane\, interactive\, and innovative laugh-out-loud comedy with a flair for both spontaneity and spectacle. But we also aim to build the improv community of Memphis with our free workshops and open-to-all jams. See a show\, or try the art for yourself – either way you’re helping us grow the comedy scene of the Bluff City. \nABOUT BLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE\nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. Members of Blueshift are involved in almost every corner of the Memphis music community\, from performing in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, recording in the studio\, teaching at the University of Memphis and Rhodes College\, playing in your favorite local bands\, and composing original music for film. Founded by flutist Jenny Davis and cellist Jonathan Kirkscey in 2016\, Blueshift aims to bring classical music out of the concert hall and into the community.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: PERSONA
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Persona at Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, August 24\, 2023\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nIngmar Bergman / 1966 / 83 minutes / Not Rated \nBy the mid-’60s\, Ingmar Bergman had already conjured many of the cinema’s most unforgettable images. But with the radical Persona\, he attained new levels of visual poetry. In the first of a series of legendary performances for Bergman\, Liv Ullmann plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone mute; an equally mesmerizing Bibi Andersson is the garrulous young nurse caring for her in a remote island cottage. While isolated together there\, the women undergo a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference. Performed with astonishing nuance and shot in stark contrast and soft light by Sven Nykvist\, the influential Persona is a penetrating\, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth (Criterion). \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Alice Hasen & Josh Threlkeld EP Release Show
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Alice Hasen & Josh Threlkeld EP Release Show in The Green Room.\n \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, August 24\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAlice and Josh are a folk/rock duo that is both woodsy and jammy. Improvisation is a specialty of both performers\, and they will often “go off the beaten track” often in order to keep every show fresh and spontaneous. \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld”s collaborative EP\, “The Aisling Farm Sessions\,” drops August 25\, 2023. This six-track project will be a formal introduction to the Memphis duo.  Both Hasen and Threlkeld come from strong instrumental backgrounds\, with cumulative decades of experience in both the classical and folk worlds. The pair loves to go to spontaneous and unexpected places\, and this project reflects that passion (the first song is entitled “Off the Beaten”). From there\, Threlkeld reinterprets an Old Time fiddle tune\, “Angeline the Baker\,” and Hasen evokes wistful longing for her Vermont roots with “Come Round.” Songs covered include Van Morrison’s “Moondance\,” “Promentory” (from The Last of the Mohicans)\, and “Achilles Jig” in a special nod to fiddler Bill Thurman. “The Aisling Farm Sessions” was recorded live in March 2023 in Limerick cabin\, on Len and Susan Lawhon’s Aisling Farm. \nBio: \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld combine instrumental virtuosity\, creative songwriting and a rainbow of tonal colors in Memphis’ newest duo act. From reinventions of old fiddle tunes to subversive and dynamic improvisation\, the pair transports their audience to vibrant and unexpected soundscapes. Inspired by spontaneity\, Alice and Josh assure that no one performance will ever resemble the next.
