SUMMARY:MicroCinema: 2021 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour
DESCRIPTION:Pay-what-you-can screening of short films presented with partner organization Indie Memphis. \nThis month: 2021 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour  \nDue to Covid-19 safety precautions\, we are limiting theater capacity and implementing socially distanced seating. Please RSVP in advance to confirm attendance. Upon RSVPing\, you will be required to choose your seat. Please be prepared to wear your mask at all times during the event. \nThe 2021 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour is a 92-minute theatrical program of seven short films selected from the 2021 Sundance Film Festival program\, widely considered the premier showcase for short films and the launchpad for many now-prominent independent filmmakers for close to 40 years. Including fiction\, documentary\, and animation from around the world\, the 2021 program offers new audiences a taste of what the festival offers and shows that short films transcend traditional storytelling. \nThe festival has always treated short films with the highest regard and gives a home to both established and new filmmakers with shorts for audiences to discover and celebrate. From documentary to animation and narrative to experimental\, the abbreviated form is made for risk-taking. Short films are a significant and popular way artists can connect with audiences. \nThe festival’s Short Film Program has long been established as a place to discover talented directors\, such as past alumni Andrea Arnold\, Lake Bell\, Damien Chazelle\, Destin Daniel Cretton\, Jay and Mark Duplass\, Cary Joji Fukunaga\, Debra Granik\, Rashaad Ernesto Green\, Reinaldo Marcus Green\, Todd Haynes\, Lynne Ramsay\, Dee Rees\, Joey Soloway\, Taika Waititi\, and many others. \n

SUMMARY:Chantae Cann at Crosstown Arts
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents jazz and soul artist Chantae Cann in The Green Room. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of show \nIf we’re being honest\, no one’s ever really just heard Chantae Cann. In truth\, you experience her. \nShe opens her mouth\, and 10\,000 hours of studied mononymous legends filter through that voice — the Stevie\, the Chaka\, the Erykah\, Jill\, India\, and Brandy. \nIt’s the church in her work. The courageous blend of an authentic soul choosing to exist in the midst of an often inauthentic industry. Yet somehow she chooses to find strength in her vulnerability. \nChantae Cann\, the artist\, is both jazz and soul. Rooted in gospel\, reflective of world rhythm and hip-hop. \nHer debut release\, Journey to Golden\, landed at #1 on the iTunes Jazz Charts and #7 on the Jazz Billboard Charts in March of 2016\, and was a much-welcomed introduction to the songstress. By the time of her follow-up release\, Sol Empowered\, we were well into the story. Earning #8 on the Jazz Billboard Charts\, this album resonates with so many because they genuinely connect to the story. And Chantae\, if nothing else\, knows how to make a connection — whether it’s with the parents who divulge the fact that their kids listen to and sing along to her songs or those who express that Chantae’s artistry has gotten them through some pretty tough times. Chantae makes music that serves as a safe haven for those seeking respite and reformation\, all the while undergirded with a simple\, but profound truth: love heals. \nWhen she’s not working\, Chantae can be found binge-watching episodes of Sister\, Sister or freestylin’ these bars since she is an incredible emcee in her head … for now. But even if she’s not in your Top5 Dead or Alive GOAT convo for rappers\, Chantae is one of the best-kept secrets in music. She’s collaborated with PJ Morton\, Masego\, Tarriona “Tank” Ball\, Snarky Puppy\, Foreign Exchange\, and Jonathan McReynolds. Chantae has electrified stages with Cory Henry\, Robert Glasper\, and Marcus Miller. She’s opened up for India.Arie\, Tweet\, Avery Sunshine\, and Lalah Hathaway. With her sights set on Barack and Michelle’s Spotify playlists and new music on the way in 2021\, it’s only a matter of time.

SUMMARY:Jordan Occasionally + Blvck Hippie at Crosstown Arts
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents disco-soul artist Jordan Occasionally and “sad boy indie rock” band Blvck Hippie in The Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \n\n\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of show \nRecently named a Rising Black Artist on Songfluencer’s Tidal Editorial Playlist\, Jordan Occasionally (they/them)\, or Jordan Dodson\, is a disco-soul artist and activist from Memphis\, TN. In February 2021\, they were awarded the “Student Communicator of the Year Award\,” the first in University of Memphis’ history\, for protests organized in honor of Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade. Jordan Occasionally has received critical acclaim for their debut album\, “Indigo\,” from blogs and fans all over the world. \nBlvck Hippie is a “sad boy indie rock” band from Memphis\, TN “tryna show Black kids they can be weird too.” \nBlvck Hippie’s music is a brutally honest and heart-wrenching look into the mind and heart of Josh Shaw. Hitting the stage with raw energy and authenticity\, the band will bring you along for an emotionally electrifying live performance that’ll remind you exactly why you’ve missed shows so much. Before the show\, be sure to check out Blvck Hippie’s “Bunkbed\,” called “despondent\, emotive\, and delightfully DIY” by Under The Radar\, and Technicolor called “expansive and immediate” by AFROPUNK. \nBlvck Hippie is recommended if “you’re a fan of The Strokes but like your songs a little more moody” (From The Strait). Shaw credits Kanye West and Kid Cudi for inspiring him as a Black artist\, pushing him to always create something different. Blvck Hippie’s VHS-inspired rock pairs with Shaw’s dark\, brooding lyrics\, drawing on themes of escapism\, loneliness\, and grief to create the “sad boy indie rock” songs of your dreams. \nBlvck Hippie includes Joshua Shaw\, Casey Rittinger\, Celest Farmer\, and Lynne Welden.

SUMMARY:Wyly Bigger
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents singer-songwriter Wyly Bigger in The Green Room. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $10 \nGrowing up just across the Mississippi River from Memphis\, it didn’t take long for Wyly Bigger to find a love of music. At age four\, he began teaching himself melodies on the piano by ear. He started taking lessons the same year and began developing his skills and sound. His first gig came at the age of nine when he started playing frequently at his local hometown diner in Arkansas. From there\, he expanded his reach across the river to Memphis and down Highway 61 to Mississippi. At seventeen\, he began writing his own music. Raised on the sounds of Memphis legends like Jerry Lee Lewis\, B.B. King\, and Elvis Presley\, Wyly mixed those influences with the blues from nearby Mississippi and the country music in Arkansas to develop his own musical style. Since then\, he has been writing more and more each year and recently was selected as a finalist for the Memphis Songwriters’ Association’s 2021 Songwriter of the Year. \nWyly released his debut self-titled EP in February of 2021 to a warm reception\, getting radio airplay from as far away as California and landing Wyly a spot on Ditty TV’s “12 Artists You Need to Know.” Consisting of five original songs\, Wyly Bigger’s EP can be found on all streaming platforms. \nNow 24 years old\, Wyly has taken his music to venues across the South from Memphis to New Orleans to Nashville. From dive bars and blues joints to festivals and halftime shows\, he has brought his music to countless stages and has no intentions of stopping now. \nWyly will be joined by Jesse Black\, Kyle McClanahan\, Drake Freeman\, and Terrell Gilmore for this performance. \nFor more information on Wyly’s music\, live shows\, or to purchase a CD\, visit wylybigger.com.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents The Muthers
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents Cirio Santiago’s The Muthers at Crosstown Theater. 1976/93 minutes/Rated R \nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) \nWe can’t say it any better than the incredible American Genre Film Archive\, which is lovingly saving films like this for folks like us to show again in all their glory on a giant screen: “Sleaze ahoy! Directed by heroic smut merchant Cirio Santiago (TNT Jackson\, Vampire Hookers) and shot on-the-cheap in the Philippines\, The Muthers is like stepping into one of Martin Denny’s exotica LPs while it plays in Jess Franco’s living room. Filled with karate chops and epic psychedelic-funk jams\, this is the story of two pirates (Jeanne Bell and Rosanne Katon) who rob and loot on the China Seas\, get sent to a women’s prison presided over by a sadistic warden\, then revolt and turn the sky black with the smoke from their machine guns. In other words\, this is the only revolutionary-pirate-women-in-prison movie that you’ll ever need. Restored from the original negative for maximum savagery!” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

Inspired by post-rock and shoegaze artists\, Malcolm uses Dinosauria to craft complex soundscapes using a guitar\, effects pedals\, a loop machine\, and some improvisation in Malcolm’s unique fashion. \nDUET FOR THEREMIN AND LAP STEEL \nBased in Atlanta\, Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel has been recording and performing since 2006 and consists of Scott Burland on theremin and Frank Schultz on lap steel guitar. \nTheir music is improvised and has been described as “experimental by nature\, but easy on the ears.” \nTheir latest offering “ ‘Oumuamua” is inspired by asteroids and comets and is available now at http://dftals.bandcamp.com. Their website is http://duetonline.net \n“The name of this Atlanta duo implies a proper classical recital\, a rigid formality. But Scott Burland (theremin) and Frank Schultz (lap steel) don’t do scripted\, improvising not-so-much distinct sounds as evolving eddies of sound\, vapors of tones that develop and transform gracefully. Hypnotic pulses and dreamy drones weave together to form a kaleidoscope of sounds and moods\, ambient clouds\, and swooning collages that are as much about texture as they are timbre\, like a long-lost soundtrack to a deep-sea documentary.” – P. Wall\, Columbia Free Times \n“It occurred to me\, listening to their work\, that it represented a “Guide to Good Drone Music”: \n– It changes; \n– It isn’t pushy\, but it pulls you along; \n– It isn’t showy\, but it shows you things; \n– It surprises; \n– The edges meet but don’t crowd the middle; \n– It creates mental and temporal space for the listener. \nAtlanta is really lucky to have this duo\, and that they continue\, \nyear-after-year\, to plumb their craft.” – Jon Ciliberto \n“Undulating soundscapes rise and fall\, reaching slowly swelling crescendos of sensory overload\, drifting in a balance of beauty and tension. Their shared instincts create an invisible structure that transcend more traditional drone music to achieve its own rhythm and tonal logic.” – Chad Radford \n“Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel dream up clouds\, aurora\, sunspots\, storm fronts. They make weather overhead. Listening to compositions like these – music these musicians made up\, in studio\, somewhere far away – I am struck by what a gift they have. Not just that they can make weather\, summoning it from nothing\, but that they can bottle it – like springwater or earth. Sending spring or summer up from Georgia\, to where we shiver in the cold.’ – Sean Michaels\, Said the Gramophone
