SUMMARY:Screening of The Faithful: The King\, the Pope\, the Princess
DESCRIPTION:This Elvis Week\, Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts presents the theatrical world premiere of The Faithful\,  filmmaker Annie Berman’s 20-year exploration of fandom\, memorabilia\, memory\, and legacy within the orbits of three of the biggest cultural icons of our time: Pope John Paul II\, Elvis Presley\, and Diana\, Princess of Wales.  PLUS: Annie Berman will be in attendance for Q&A following the film! \nDoors at 6:30 pm | Show at 7 pm \nTickets: $10 (or $8 with Indie Memphis member credits) \nA Pope John Paul II lollipop. An Elvis Presley shower curtain. A Princess Diana teacup. These are just some of the countless pieces of memorabilia that these pop culture icons’ most devoted fans collect and cherish… but why? The Faithful’s director\, Annie Berman\, explores the deep veneration and legacies of the Pope\, the Princess\, and the King. Over the course of 20 years\, Berman profiles these figures’ biggest fans and makes numerous pilgrimages to Vatican City\, Graceland\, and Kensington Palace. As the years go by\, the film itself becomes increasingly entwined with Berman’s daily life and identity\, much like how these officially licensed knick-knacks define the fans she filmed. \nDue to Covid-19 safety precautions\, we are limiting theater capacity and implementing social distancing seating. Upon purchasing your tickets\, you will be required to choose your seat in advance. Please be prepared to wear your mask at all times during the event.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Black Orpheus
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus at Crosstown Theater. 1959/107 minutes/Rated PG \nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) \nBlack Orpheus is a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus (Breno Mello) and Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) and is set in the streets of Rio during Carnival.  When released in 1959\, Black Orpheus was an arthouse hit\, driven by the incredible cinematography\, the location\, and the bossa nova music. Despite its complications and glossing over of what life was like for the poor in Rio\, Black Orpheus is without doubt a cultural milestone and an influence on later works in film and music. Black Orpheus is one of those award-winning films everyone is supposed to seem\, but in this case\, seriously\, you should come see it! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Blueshift Ensemble performs ICEBERG New Music
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a free pop-up performance by Blueshift Ensemble performing works by ICEBERG New Music. \nTwo shows: Friday\, August 20\, 7:30 pm and Saturday\, Aug. 21\, 7:30 pm \nBlueshift Ensemble is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. \nFounded by composer Alex Burtzos in 2016\, ICEBERG new music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. The mission of the organization is to promote the idea that substance – not surface – is the heart of music creation and perception. We live in an era where dogma is out of place; composers can\, and should\, draw from an unprecedentedly broad array of influences in their work – including popular music\, avant-garde techniques\, and everything in between. The ten ICEBERG composers hail from different schools and cultivate radically different sounds\, but their contrasting musical languages belie shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. ICEBERG is committed to radical stylistic inclusiveness\, excellence of craft\, dialogue with the audience\, and a modernization of the concert-going experience.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents After Hours
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents Martin Scorsese’s After Hours at Crosstown Theater. 1985/97 minutes/Rated R \nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) \nEver have a night where nothing seems to go right? After releasing The King of Comedy just a few years before\, Martin Scorsese kept working on his “comedy chops” with After Hours — the story of one night in the life of everyman\, data entry worker Paul Hackett\, played by Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London and My Girl). It is hard to describe the level of strangeness and unease After Hours puts on the viewer. Paul’s night begins with a happenstance meeting that could seemingly result in a possible romantic encounter with Rosanna Arquette (Desperately Seeking Susan and Silverado). The plot devolves from there into an unceasing chain of worst-case scenarios. With Teri Garr (Young Frankenstein and Close Encounters of the Third Kind)\, Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice\, Home Alone ONE AND TWO!!)\, Linda Fiorentino (The Last Seduction)\, Bronson Pinchot (COUSIN BALKI!!!) and CHEECH AND CHONG!! YES\, THAT CHEECH AND CHONG!! CAN’T MISS!!! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.
