SUMMARY:CALL TO MUSICIANS — A Change of Tone: In/Out of Sync
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of live music\nProposal Submission Period: July 9  – September 10\, 2019\nEvent dates: April 18th –  21st\, 2020 \nCrosstown Arts is challenging musical artists to create a body of new work for A Change of Tone\, an exhibition of live music\, applicable to musicians of all genres\, scheduled for April 18th – 21st\, 2020. \nThis four-part\, four-day event will feature a selection of four musical acts\, one act per night\, who will “exhibit” their music for a listening audience over loudspeakers in one venue as they simultaneously perform it in another\, creating a non-traditional listening experience. \nDuring this event\, there will be two live feed interconnections between The Green Room music venue at Crosstown Arts\, and Crosstown Theater: the first feed will be an audio feed for the audience in The Green Room to listen to\, as the musicians\, out of sight\, perform their original work live in the empty Crosstown Theater auditorium. The second feed will video-capture The Green Room audience for the performing musicians in the Theater to see on a screen\, so that they may virtually watch and technically perform\, for their audience. The audience in The Green Room will be informed in advance that they will be watched by the performing musicians in the theater\, creating an immersive environment for the listening audience in which the performers’ new music might achieve a vivid and seemingly living omnipresence. \nSimilar to the experience of being inside of a haunted house or abandoned building\, this spectral approach to auditory perception will be\, among other things\, a sonic experiment in vulnerability. It will be an attempt to enhance and heighten the audio-sensory experience for the listener\, and perhaps will intensify the presence and impact that music can have when our fight-or-flight response is instinctively activated\, giving the sounds we hear the power to demand our full attention. \n\nSubmission Process: \nThe theme of this music exhibition is “In/Out of Sync.” What does it mean to be “in or out of sync”–with something\, with nothing\, with anything…with everything? In what ways do you feel or observe things as being in or out of sync with one another\, and what approach would you envision yourself taking\, musically\, to express these feelings and interpretations as they present themselves within your reality? The goal of A Change of Tone is to invite artists to sonically and musically explore the varied interrelations between technical musical themes and humanity: what we experience\, observe\, believe\, and imagine within the realms of our intellectual capabilities.  \nMusicians who wish to apply to this musical showcase must submit an original proposal (one or more pages preferred) that explains their vision for the new music they intend to create as it pertains to the “In/Out of Sync” theme. Artists may take any approach to this\, from topics based in society and everyday life\, to the larger natural world and universe\, and may do so through both the lens of these guiding ideas or beyond them.  \nSubmissions are due on Tuesday\, September 10 at noon. \nApply here \n\nInstructions if Selected: \nThis music exhibition is limited to 4 participants. The submissions will be randomly selected by a unique\, curated lottery process\, by which every proposal will be considered; the primary contact(s) for the four selected proposals will be notified of their acceptance and given a performance time slot on Tuesday\, September 24\, at 12pm.  \nMusicians will then use the nearly 7-month period before the A Change of Tone: In/Out of Sync event to create a set of new music\, no less than 45 minutes and no longer than 2 hours in length\, with the intention of performing it live during one of the 4 performance timeframes (randomly assigned). The time slots are as follows*: \nSaturday\, April 18\, 2020 –  7:30pm\nSunday April 19\, 2020 –  7:30pm\nMonday\, April 20\, 2020 –  7:30pm\nTuesday\, April 21\, 2020 –  7:30pm \nSelected participants are encouraged to start creating their sonic and musical works as soon as possible to allow for adequate time for creation and rehearsal. If you are selected\, please do not perform or submit proposals for work that was created prior to this open call (do not submit work created before July 9\, 2019). \nMusicians may also conduct an artist talk or meet-and-greet in the Crosstown Theater auditorium after their performance. This component is optional\, but highly encouraged. \nEach performance will be recorded by a sound engineer and will be given to the artist free of charge\, to use for any purpose. The artists will receive both a stereo room recording and an unmixed\, multitrack version of their performance so that they may create their own personal mix of their performance. All artists selected to perform at the event will also receive: a $125 stipend for each musician within a group of 2 or more individuals; or a $200 stipend for solo musicians.  \nMusic stands will be provided at the venue for artists who would prefer to reference their work during their performance (this is highly encouraged as we are not expecting artists to perfectly memorize such newly created work within the 7-month timeframe). \nCopyright infringement and cover versions are not allowed at this event. \n*If you are selected\, we will try to accommodate as much as possible for any scheduling conflicts\, though unfortunately\, due to the numerous events being hosted by Crosstown Arts in our various venues throughout the year\, this could mean that you may have to forfeit your participation\, and we will have to make another lottery selection in your place. If this happens\, we hope that you will still feel inspired to create new work based on the themes you chose to explore in your proposal. Only one written proposal is allowed per submission\, per artist; proposals can be made on behalf of a solo musician\, or any group of two or more musicians. \nThank you for your proposal submissions. Please contact Lauren Cain at  lauren@crosstownarts.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Scott Carter: Counterpoint
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exhibition of new work by Scott Carter. The artist’s intent is that this body of work reflects a fragile intertwining of music\, performance\, and sculpture while reflecting both digital and intuitive methods of problem solving in the studio. \nAbout the exhibition:\nThis exhibition emphasizes a relationship between disparate voices. As a metaphor\, these\nvoices represent contrasting and divergent forms of the artist’s creative practice. Carter’s\ninterest in music\, performance and sculpture oscillates between utter failure\, disinterest and frustration to moments where both practices seemingly make sense existing in the same place\, both physically and metaphorically. This body of work represents the struggle to produce in both creative fields. \nDuring his recent residency at Crosstown Arts\, Carter was allowed the freedom and space to work intuitively and pursue both of these creative endeavors with the assistance of digital tools and advanced fabrication equipment. The artist’s intent is that this body of work reflects a fragile intertwining of music\, performance and sculpture while reflecting both digital and intuitive methods of problem solving in the studio. \n\nArtist statement:\nThe connections between humans and the built environment interest me\, serving as the\nprimary source material for my work. I formulate thoughtful assessments of my environment\, exploring connections between art\, design and sound. \nThe physical development of my work is related to a tactile sense for materials. Through\nthe process of examining materials and their function\, I am interested in bestowing new\nvalue and subverting function. My practice often involves a re-purposing of materials ranging from drywall\, carpet\, and fluorescent lights to used guitars\, drum sets\, and\nelectronic components. Metaphorically\, these material transitions allow me to explore my\ninterests in the way we experience culture\, objects and physical environments. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSCOTT CARTER (b. 1984\, United States) is a Wisconsin-based artist\, whose work is influenced by the experience of living amongst mass-produced materials\, spaces and objects that are inherent in contemporary architecture and design. His work manifests as immersive installations and interactive objects that facilitate subtle shifts in value and attempt to redefine utility in relation to everyday experiences. His practice parallels contemporary discourse in art\, design\, architecture\, and sound. \nScott received his MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in\n2011\, where he was the first recipient of the Eldon Danhausen Fellowship for Sculpture.\nHe has attended funded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson\, Vermont and the Ox Bow School of Art in Saugatuck\, Michigan. In addition he is a recipient of the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship for Midwestern artists (2013) and a first place recipient of the Beers Contemporary Emerging Artist Award in Sculpture (2013) \nSelected solo shows include include Velocity – Linda Warren Projects\, Chicago\, Il (2017); The Nature of Being – Pinnacle Gallery\, Savannah\, Ga (2015); The Shape of Things – Beers Contemporary\, London (2014); Disonar – Evanston Art Center\, Evanston\, Il (2013) and Force Majeure – Linda Warren Projects\, Chicago\, Il (2012); Recent group exhibitions include as site specific installation for In Situ and Linda Warren Projects at Expo Chicago (2014)\, Building Stories – Kohler Arts Center\, Sheboygan WI (2014) and I am What I am Doing – La Esquina Gallery\, Kansas City\, MO (2014). \nIn addition\, he was a visiting artist as part of DeFINE Art 2015 at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah Georgia and recently completed a three month residency as part of the Kohler Arts/Industry program in Kohler\, Wisconsin.

SUMMARY:Wang Chen: The Sin Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Screening Room at Crosstown Arts for a new exhibition of work by Wang Chen. Chen’s work will also be exhibited on the pop-out walls in the East Atrium. \nWang Chen is a multimedia artist whose work incorporates installation\, performance\, drawing and animation to create digital videos that depict fantasy worlds with humanoid characters\, whom she uses to examine gender\, sexuality\, and politics. By layering different mediums into one digital composition\, Chen creates an overwhelming fantasy world of multiple\, moveable layers and elements that together become unstoppable and continuously transforming as a way of considering the possibilities of imagined worlds. \nIn her videos\, hand-sewn costumes fuse the human body into the virtual space where humanness blends in\, dissolves\, and potentially succumbs to the digital fantasy. As the costumed performer\, Chen herself becomes a physical component of the worlds she creates\, becoming multiple. These clones represent variously unstable identities:  undefined genders\, cartoonish humanoids\, ghostlike apparitions and thus can adopt multiple identities\, abstracting her own role as the artist-architect to become many things at once. \nChen’s playground of electric city-space\, neon landscapes\, and nightmarish amusement parks becomes itself a representation\, if not a fun-house mirror\, of our own reality.  The juxtaposition and melting of these dark yet fantastical scenes act as a playful reflection of Chen’s complicated response and rejection of societal norms while constructing a new vision of gender and sexuality in our world. \nThis work may not be appropriate for younger audiences. \nAbout Wang Chen:\nWang Chen was born in China and is a multimedia artist currently living and working in NYC. The installations that Chen creates begin with physical drawings. Chen makes costumes and props for her videos and builds unimaginable spaces using virtual reality. Chen received her BFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work has been exhibited/screened internationally in China\, UK\, US\, Sweden\, Venezuela\, and Greece. Chen has participated in several residencies including The Studios at MASS MoCA\, the NYFA Immigrant Mentoring Program\, and the Crosstown Arts artist residency program. She is the fellowship recipient of Roswell Artist in Residency\, Vermont Studio Center and Nars Foundation.

SUMMARY:Two Tons of Steel at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts welcomes Americana pioneers and legends Two Tons of Steel to The Green Room. \n\nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore there was Americana\, before there was Texas Country\, Two Tons of Steel rocked a sound that blended the best of musical worlds and pushed the envelope with a signature brand of country punk. \nThe San Antonio-based group packed the small bars and local hangouts and quickly became the Alamo City’s most-loved band\, earning them a spot on the cover of Billboard Magazine in 1996. It was the beginning of a twenty year journey for the 4-piece ensemble. \nReleasing “Two Tons Of Steel” in 1994 and “Crazy For My Baby” in 1995 on Blue Fire Records\, a sponsorship deal with Lone Star Beer quickly followed. In 1996\, the band began traveling outside of Texas\, including stops at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville\, the National Theater in Havana\, Cuba\, and European tours to greet fans who had embraced their Texas-born sound. \nTwo Tons of Steel continues as an institution at Texas’ Gruene Hall\, where its annual Two Ton Tuesdays summer series draws 12\,000 fans and as a popular act at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. They have been repeatedly voted “Best Country Band” by the San Antonio Current\, one of its hometown weeklies.

SUMMARY:The Orrin Evans Trio at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for a performance by jazz pianist Orrin Evans. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Show at 7:30pm \nMany may know Orrin Evans as the pianist for Jazz juggernauts The Bad Plus. But with more than 25 albums to his credit\, without ever relying on the support of a major label\, Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who’s made a habit of rattling the jazz world’s confining cages. That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. \nAs a daring pianist\, Evans combines raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance into a sound wholly his own. As an adventurous composer he traverses stylistic boundaries with abandon\, drawing on full-throttle swing\, deep-rooted blues\, expressive soul\, or bracing excursions into the avant-garde. As an audacious bandleader\, he delights in daring fellow musicians to take bold risks\, whether in mutable small group settings or his raucous Captain Black Big Band. As an inventive collaborator\, his projects range from the nerve-rattling collective trio Tarbaby to the latest twist in his never predictable story\, becoming the first new member to join The Bad Plus in the band’s nearly 20-year history. \nEvans’ broad-minded\, provocative approach has led to a stunning variety of collaborations with a who’s-who of modern jazz including Nicholas Payton\, Sean Jones\, Oliver Lake\, JD Allen\, Christian McBride\, Eric Revis\, Buster Williams\, Karriem Riggins\, Bill Stewart\, Nasheet Waits\, Kevin Eubanks and Kurt Rosenwinkel\, among countless others. \nIn 2018\, Evans relaunched his Imani Records label with a newfound focus on projects by young\, innovative musicians\, beginning with albums by saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis and bassist Jonathan Michel. He’s also produced recordings by JD Walter\, Denise King\, Joanna Pascale\, Sharel Cassity\, and Eric Revis. \nEvans pays homage to his mentors and influences while passing the torch to new generations. He’s recently performed concerts paying homage to the late Geri Allen alongside drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and a celebration of the centennial of Thelonious Monk at Duke University\, along with curating concert series at Philly’s South and New York’s Smoke. As an educator he directed the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Jazz Standards and taught at Connecticut’s Litchfield Jazz Camp.

SUMMARY:Live Score to Seijun Suzuki's Detective Bureau 2-3: Go To Hell Bastards!
DESCRIPTION:Memphis-based Detective Bureau presents a live score of Seijun Suzuki’s “Detective Bureau 2-3: Go To Hell Bastards!” \nDetective Bureau explores late ’60s and early ’70s Afro-Brazilian soul jazz stylings. Featuring Joe Restivo (guitar)\, Marc Franklin (trumpet)\, Landon Moore (bass)\, Pat Fusco (keys)\, George Sluppick (drums)\, and Felix Hernandez (percussion). \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7:30pm | Performance 8pm \nSeijun Suzuki was a Japanese filmmaker\, actor\, and screenwriter. His films are known for their jarring visual style\, irreverent humor\, nihilistic cool\, and entertainment-over-logic sensibility. He made 40 predominately B-movies for the Nikkatsu Company between 1956 and 1967\, working most prolifically in the yakuza genre. His increasingly surreal style began to draw the ire of the studio in 1963 and culminated in his ultimate dismissal for what is now regarded as his magnum opus\, Branded to Kill (1967). \n

SUMMARY:The Grammy Award-Winning Rebirth Brass Band at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by the Grammy Award-winning\, New Orleans-based Rebirth Brass Band on the Kemmons Wilson Family Stage at Crosstown Theater. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 6 pm | performance at 7 pm \n“UNBELIEVABLE. HARD AS HELL\,\nFREE AS A RAY OF LIGHT\, THERE IS\nNOT A BAND ON EARTH THAT IS BETTER. STUNNING.”\n— FLEA (OF THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS) \n\nAbout Rebirth Brass Band:\nWhether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf\, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers\, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands\, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. \n“Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to\,” says The New York Times\, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing\, anyone can cut loose.” \nIn the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands\, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack\, and they show no signs of slowing down.

SUMMARY:Kevin Morby – Duo Tour w/ Support from William Tyler
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by singer-songwriter Kevin Morby in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. Opening for Kevin is William Tyler (Lambchop/Silver Jews). \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7:30pm | Show at 8pm \nAbout Kevin Morby:\nKevin Morby released his beloved solo debut Harlem River in 2013 and has released a full-length nearly every year since. His latest\, 2017’s City Music\, is a collection Kevin says “is a mix-tape\, a fever dream\, a love letter dedicated to those cities that I cannot get rid of\, to those cities that are all inside of me.” \nAbout William Tyler:\n“William Tyler knows the South — as a crucible of American histories and cultures\, an entity capable of expansive beauty and incomprehensible violence\, often in the same beat — as his native place\, the place that holds him and that he runs from. In the music of William Tyler\, the South is not apart from America; the South is America condensed. \n“William’s latest album\, Goes West\, marks a sort of narrowing of focus for his music; it sounds as though he found a way to point himself directly towards the rich and bittersweet emotional center of his music without being distracted by side trips. Perhaps this is down to the fact that William only plays acoustic guitar on the album\, a clear and conscious decision considering that he is one of Nashville’s great electric guitarists. The band that performs Goes West alongside William—including guitarists Meg Duffy and Bill Frisell\, bassist and producer Brad Cook\, keyboardist James Wallace\, drummer Griffin Goldsmith\, and engineer Tucker Martine—is the best and most sympathetic group of players that William could have assembled to play these songs.” — M.C. Taylor \n

SUMMARY:Katharine Hedlund at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by Katharine Hedlund. \nJoin jazz vocalist/pianist Katharine Hedlund for a special live album recording performance at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts with Paul Taylor\, Jim Spake\, and Carl Caspersen. Katherine Hedlund was becoming quite the fixture and turning heads in Memphis before she departed for San Francisco in 2018\, and we are thrilled to be hosting her in a rare return appearance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance 7:30 pm \n\n \n\n\n \n  \n\nKatharine Hedlund is a jazz/soul pianist and vocalist with a musicality far beyond her years. Katharine grew up in Darien\, CT\, and began her professional performing career at 13 years old\, playing original renditions of jazz standards with her trio in local clubs around the New York metro area. Her performances frequently invite comparison to Diana Krall and Norah Jones – but with quite a bit more sass than either of the former! \nKatharine attended Northwestern University in Chicago\, IL \,to continue musical studies with the renowned saxophonist of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Victor Goines\, and soulful Grammy-winning pianist for vocalist Diane Reeves\, Peter Martin. She was awarded the highly competitive piano chair of the school’s premier touring graduate small ensemble as an undergraduate. \nShe has performed in some of Jazz’s most prestigious venues\, including The Green Mill Chicago\, The Jazz Showcase Chicago\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola of Jazz at Lincoln Center NYC\, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, Germantown Performing Arts Center\, The Sound Room (Oakland\, CA)\, among others. \nKatharine relocated to Memphis after graduation from Northwestern and began performing weekly at the historic Peabody Hotel and the Zebra Lounge in Overton Square\, honing her skills in voice and piano in soul\, blues\, and pop styles. Katharine has since moved to San Francisco\, but Memphis will always be her musical home.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk with special guest Bernie Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, a monthly jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This month’s guest: former New York Yankees center fielder and World Series Champion/jazz guitarist Bernie Williams. \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm \nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \n\nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Bernie Williams:\nGrowing up in Puerto Rico\, Bernie Williams discovered his love for baseball and music at roughly the same time\, when at the age of eight he fell in love with the sounds of a flamenco guitar his merchant-marine father brought home from Spain\, and also felt the same exhilaration when he first picked up a baseball bat. The young student-athlete quickly excelled in both pursuits\, going on to attend the special performance arts school Escuela Libre de Musica at the age of thirteen and becoming one of the most noted young athletes on the island\, both as a track and field standout posting record times in the 400 meters\, as well as one of Puerto Rico’s most sought after young baseball prospects. Bernie was signed by the New York Yankees after high school in 1987. After working his way through the farm system\, the switch-hitting Williams made his Major League debut with the Yankees in May\, 1991. \nIn his 16-year career patrolling centerfield for the New York Yankees\, Bernie Williams was a four-time World Series Champion and a five-time All Star. Williams has more post-season RBIs to his credit than any other player in Major League history and his resume also boasts four Gold Glove awards\, six American League pennants\, the 1996 ALCS MVP award\, and the 1998 American League batting title. Bernie is also among the Yankees all-time leaders in every major batting category\, with his performance statistics often standing alongside such legetnds as Babe Ruth\, Mickey Mantle\, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. On May\, 24\, 2015\, the Yankees retired Bernie’s uniform number 51 and a plaque was dedicated and placed in Monument Park in Yankee Stadium\, cementing his legacy as an all-time Yankee great. \nThroughout Williams’ years with the Yankees\, his passion for music never waned\, and the sound of his guitar would often be heard emanating from the clubhouse or during team flights. Whether acoustic or electric\, a guitar was a constant presence in the star’s locker or equipment bag\, and it was no surprise when he demonstrated how serious his musical pursuit was with the release of his first album\, The Journey Within in 2003. The record featured fusions of jazz\, rock and the tropical rhythms of Williams’ Latin heritage and was met with both strong critical praise and instant chart success- reaching #3 on Billboard’s “Contemporary Jazz Chart.” \nBernie Williams raised his musical game even further with the release of his second album Moving Forward. Featuring guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen\, Jon Secada\, Dave Koz\, and an All-Star cast of renowned studio musicians\, Moving Forward debuted as Billboard’s #2 Contemporary Jazz album in the country\, and continued to hold that chart position for five straight weeks\, and spawned two consecutive Billboard #1 singles\, Go For It\, and Ritmo de Otono. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Album in 2009. \nIn addition to performing at concert venues\, music festivals\, and special events\, since the release of Moving Forward\, Bernie spent considerable time authoring his first book\, Rhythms of the Game: The Link Between Music and Athletic Performance\, published by Hal Leonard Books and released in July 2011. The book examines the symbiotic relationship between musical artistry and athletic performance through the eyes of a man who has mastered both. \nBernie is an active crusader for arts and music education in the lives of all students\, and is a national spokesman for the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation’s SupportMusic Coalition\, which unites non-profit organizations\, schools\, and businesses working to assure that music education is supported in communities everywhere\, and that all children have the opportunity to learn and grow with music. He has met with leaders of Congress on Capitol Hill for years lobbying to ensure that arts and music become part of a core education in our schools across the United States. \nIn 2015\, he was appointed a Turnaround Arts artist by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in partnership with the White House\, and U.S. Department of Education. Turnaround Arts brings arts education programs and supplies to a group of the lowest-performing elementary and middle schools in the country. These resources help schools improve attendance\, parent engagement\, student motivation\, and academic achievement. \nOn May 13\, 2016\, Williams graduated from the Manhattan School of Music\, in New York\, NY\, a prestigious music conservatory in New York\, NY\, receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance. \nIn 2017\, Bernie became the national spokesperson for Breathless\, an educational awareness campaign for Ideopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)\, a mysterious lung disease that took the life of Bernie’s father Bernabe Sr.\, and still has no cure. He has been touring the country visiting many cities\, Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball ballparks\, and speaking at major medical conferences to spread the word about the disease that affects up to 132\,000 people and their families per year. \nOn June 13\, 2019\, Bernie became “Dr. Williams”\, as he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the State University of New York through SUNY Potsdam and the world- renowned Drake School of Music\, considered the “birthplace of music education”. Williams was recognized for his record-setting achievements as a New York Yankee\, as well as his artistic accomplishments as a musician and dedication to philanthropy. \nYou can find Bernie online at www.bernie51.com\, on Twitter @bw51official and on Facebook at BernieWilliamsOfficial and Instagram at BernieWilliamsOfficial.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents A Face in the Crowd
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nA FACE IN THE CROWD chronicles the rise and fall of Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes (Andy Griffith)\, a boisterous entertainer discovered in an Arkansas drunk tank by Marcia Jeffries (Patricia Neal)\, a local radio producer with ambitions of her own. His charisma and cunning soon shoot him to the heights of television stardom and political demagoguery\, forcing Marcia to grapple with the manipulative\, reactionary monster she has created. Directed by Elia Kazan from a screenplay by Budd Schulberg\, this incisive satire features an extraordinary debut screen performance by Griffith\, who brandishes his charm in an uncharacteristically sinister role. Though the film was a flop on its initial release\, subsequent generations have marveled at its eerily prescient diagnosis of the toxic intimacy between media and politics in American life.

SUMMARY:Those Pretty Wrongs at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for Those Pretty Wrongs\, a musical partnership between Jody Stephens (of Big Star) and Luther Russell. Also featuring members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra —  Jessie Munson\, Yennifer Correia\, Beth Luscombe\, and Jonathan Kirkscey. \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nThose Pretty Wrongs are Jody Stephens and Luther Russell. It’s a musical partnership borne of a deep and lasting friendship\, the roots of which stretch back to the early ’90s\, when the two were introduced. As the story goes\, nary a note of music was made between them until about five years ago\, when they were united in the cause of a documentary about Jody’s alma mater\, the legendary Memphis group Big Star. After releasing their self-titled debut on Ardent/Burger in 2016 to a healthy dose of acclaim\, they went out on the road\, playing for audiences across North America\, Australia\, Europe\, and the U.K. \nDuring the course of these runs\, they began to forge the sound for their second offering\, Zed for Zulu\, due out September 6\, 2019 on Burger Records\, a meditation on communication or lack thereof\, the ever-present past or the question of the future\, inevitable death\, or imminent re-birth. The music is colorful but muted\, something complex woven in a simple way. It’s a symphony of chords and melodies\, yet played in an understated fashion\, without too much fuss. Those Pretty Wrongs don’t have time to fuss\, as Luther dwells in Los Angeles and Jody resides in Memphis. And they like it that way.

SUMMARY:Todd Snider at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:Update to those who purchased tickets to see Todd Snider and his new band on September 21. Due to the tragic loss of friend and guitar player Neal Casal\, who was part of the new band\, Todd will be performing these shows solo. Todd wants you to know that he appreciates your support and understanding. \nFormer Memphian Todd Snider is back\, and he’s performing a solo show at Crosstown Theater. Opening act: Dean Alexander \nTickets: $30\nDoors at 7 pm | show at 8 pm \nAbout Todd Snider:\nOne morning near the end of August\, Todd Snider was relaxing with a visitor on the back porch of his house just outside Nashville\, drinking coffee and shooting the breeze while his dog\, Cowboy Jim\, took a nap nearby. After awhile\, Snider said to his guest\, “I’ve got an album’s worth of songs\, and I think the songs are telling me to make a folk record.” \nThis was a surprising bit of news considering he had spent the last six years making rock albums of one kind or another. But Snider was feeling as if he had “maybe drifted too far from the shore.” He was feeling the pull to start over\, to go back to what he was doing when he first began\, to return to his roots as a folksinger. \nIf Snider needed any further evidence that was the direction he should pursue\, he got it a half hour later. Back inside his home office\, he checked his email and had one from his manager informing him he had just received an offer to play the 2019 Newport Folk Festival\, an event he had never done. \nSnider mentioned he had been listening to Woody Guthrie’s Library of Congress Recordings\, then crossed the room to the turntable and put the needle down on side one of the record. “Woody Guthrie sometimes gets me reset on why you do a song\, instead of how\,” Snider explains of the man who has long been a touchstone for him. “When I was young\, there was something about him that made me want to do it. So once or twice a year\, I’ll go back to him\, I’ll go back to the source.” \nGuthrie famously had the words “This machine kills fascists” printed on his guitar\, and on several of the songs on Snider’s new album\, Cash Cabin Sessions\, Vol. 3\, he squarely aims his guitar at the creeping fascism he sees in America. He had been wanting to make a political record since 2016\, and although only half the songs lean in that direction\, there is one constant throughout the album: a man\, his guitar\, and the truth.

SUMMARY:Listening Sessions at the Green Room: Woman to Woman by Shirley Brown (1974)
DESCRIPTION:Despite the difficult financial times Stax Records faced in 1974\, it was still able to churn out one more classic album and single\, the incredible Woman to Woman cut by West Memphis’ own Shirley Brown. \nProduced by Jim Stewart and Al Jackson\, Jr.\, Woman to Woman was the label’s swan song\, but not before the single (Stax’s final #1 song) became an anthem to every woman whose man dared covet another. \nJoin Dr. Charles Hughes of Rhodes College and Memphis author and filmmaker Jamey Hatley for a close listen of and a lively discussion about this classic album.
