SUMMARY:Pinkney Herbert — Distilled: The Narrative Transformed
DESCRIPTION:A 30-year survey of Pinkney Herbert’s vibrant body of work.  \nThis exhibition tracks Herbert’s transition from his narrative beginnings through the development of a personal abstract vocabulary that both thrills and seduces the viewer. \nOpening reception: Saturday\, May 26\, 6-9 pm \nCurated by Sam Yates\, T. Michael Martin\, and David Lusk in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n\nArtist Statement:\nSince 2008\, I have divided my time between Memphis and New York. Working in both cities has inspired a sense of exploration and a certain amount of nervous energy in my paintings and drawings. My intent is to allow for the funky\, raw history of Memphis to collide with the frenetic energy of New York City. This dichotomy fires my intuitive impulses\, allowing them to surface and meet head​-on in an ever-changing conflict​ between the emotional and the cerebral. The gestural marks I make attempt to bridge that gap. I am influenced by many other sources\, including the figure\, architecture\, maps\, water\, music\, urban imagery\, and digital technology. During the last few years\, my goal has been to expand my abstract language to question and illuminate the connections and contradictions between my interior world and the real world. \nAbout the Artist:\nPinkney Herbert was born in Charlotte\, NC in 1954. He received his BA from Rhodes College and his MFA from the University of Memphis. Herbert is the recipient of Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Tennessee Arts Commission\, and USIA-Arts  America. He is has exhibited throughout the US\, Europe\, Japan\, and Southeast Asia. His art is in numerous national and international collections and in the permanent collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art\, Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art\, and the Arkansas Arts Center\, among others. \nHerbert is represented by David Lusk Gallery\, Memphis\, TN; Sandler Hudson Gallery\, Atlanta\, GA; Boyd Satellite\, New Orleans\, LA; ADA Gallery\, Richmond\, VA; and Greg Thompson Fine Arts\, North Little Rock\, AR. He is a fellow and has served as trustee of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA)\, Amherst\, VA (2008-2017). He currently serves as president of VCCA-France\, a residency program in Auvillar\, France\, and has served on that board since 2009. He is also the founding director of Marshall Arts\, an alternative gallery\, performance\, and studio space he established in Memphis in 1992. For the past ten years\, he has divided his time equally between New York and Memphis. \nIn November 2015\, the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville mounted a 30-year survey of Herbert’s work entitled Distilled: The Narrative Transformed. In 2013-2014\, Herbert was awarded a year-long studio as part of the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Space Program in Brooklyn\, NY. \nHerbert has taught painting and drawing at the University of Georgia Study Abroad Program in Cortona\, Italy\, and also at the Penland School of Crafts\, the Arrowmont School\, the Telluride School of Painting\, Rhodes College\, the University of Memphis\, and the Memphis College of Art. He has been a visiting artist at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, TN; the Academy of Fine Arts\, Helsinki\, Finland; the Institute of Fine Arts\, Lahti\, Finland; the Academy of Fine Arts\, Prague\, Czech Republic; University of Fine Arts\, Hanoi\, Vietnam; and the Oberfalzer Kuntzlerhaus\, Schwandorf\, Germany.

DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Janaye Brown\nPresenting artists:\n– Meredith Wilson\n– Tony Mitchell\n– Carrol McTyer\n– Miquelle Clements \n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. DESCRIPTION:Please join Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts as we welcome film composer Jonathan Kirkscey\, accompanied by a live chamber ensemble performing selections from his scores.  Jonathan will discuss his experience and creative process working as a music composer for numerous films\, including the recently released award-winning documentary on Fred Rogers\, Won’t You Be My Neighbor. \nJonathan Kirkscey is a composer\, producer\, cellist\, and guitarist who regularly performs with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Blueshift Ensemble\, of which he is a founding member. \nJonathan recently scored the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor\, a film about Fred Rogers which opened in theaters in June of 2018. He also scored Best of Enemies\, directed by Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom) and Robert Gordon\, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. His score for Best of Enemies earned him the International Documentary Association’s award for best original music in a documentary feature. \nJonathan also composed music for several Netflix original documentary series\, including “Chelsea Does” and “Abstract: The Art of Design.”  His other feature scores include Mike McCarthy’s Cigarette Girl\, the documentary 2 Million Minutes: The 21st Century Solution\, Craig Brewer’s debut feature The Poor and Hungry\, and Only Child from director Brian Pera. \nShoot & Splice is a monthly forum for filmmakers presented collaboratively by Crosstown Arts & Indie Memphis. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | talk at 7 pm\nLocation: Crosstown Arts East Atrium in Crosstown Concourse (top of the red spiral stair)

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artists will deliver talks in the Pecha Kucha format. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis and Temple Israel present a screening of Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405\, the Academy Award winner for 2018 Documentary Short Subject. \nThis is a portrait of a brilliant 56-year-old artist who is represented by one of Los Angeles’ top galleries. Her body of raw\, emotional work reveals a lifetime of extreme depression and anxiety. \nThe artist\, Mindy Alper\, has suffered through electro-shock therapy\, multiple commitments to mental institutions\, and a 10-year period without speech. Her only consistent means of communicating has been to channel her hyper self-awareness into drawings and sculpture of powerful psychological clarity. \nThrough an examination of her work\, interviews\, reenactments\, the building of an eight-and-a-half-foot paper-mache bust of her beloved psychiatrist\, we learn how she has emerged from a life of darkness and isolation to a life that includes love\, trust\, and laughter. \nIndie Memphis Nights is presented by Orion FCU

Please check back next month for details on our next Crosstown Jazz Series concert. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | show at 7 pm \nJazz tribute to Grammy-winning jazz songstress Nancy Wilson featuring D’Monet (vocalist)\, Darryl Sanford (piano)\, Carl Casperson (acoustic bass)\, Jonathan Bass (guitar)\, Mike Assad (drums). \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \nNancy Wilson (born February 20\, 1937) is an American singer with more than seventy albums\, and three Grammy Awards. \n\n \nAbout D’Monet:\nHow an artist starts a journey can say a lot about their destination; belting out melodies from the womb is a divine beginning. The classically trained voice known as D’Monet cannot be defined as a Jazz\, Rhythm and Blues\, or Pop singer … but she has redefined the meaning of the traditional soul artist. \nD’Monet allows you to travel on contorted twists of loves’ successes and failures\, all while exercising her massive vocal prowess. Nurturing her vocal gifts from the tender age of 4\, along with developing her ear for the piano by 7\, she now is a seasoned veteran. \nD’Monet has shared her soul from New York to Los Angeles\, but it’s only natural she makes Memphis\, Tennessee the home of her “Futuristic Soul.” As D’Monet inspires those within her artistic circle\, she soaks inspiration from classic triple threat artists\, such as Anita Baker\, Oleta Adams\, Celine Dion\, Luther Vandross\, Stevie Wonder and Rachelle Ferrell. \nD’Monet has a gift for building bridges between a song and her audience\, crossing cultural and musical genres. Having shared the stage with Soul Crooner Eric Roberson\, and also having a brief stint as a background singer for Blackstreet’s Dave Hollister\, D’Monet has become a musical mainstay\, particularly in the city of Memphis. In 2011\, D’Monet was featured on Markevius Faulkner‘s hit single “Day One\,” which received major radio airplay on WHAL-FM’S 95.7 Hallelujah FM. In the wake of “Day One”’s success\, D’Monet released her debut single\, “Oooh Baby (Got Your Back).” Her quest to continue along her musical journey is just beginning. \n\nAbout Strictly Jazz Entertainment:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. Presently\, he is the Co-Executive\nDirector of Locate Arts + Seed Space. He also teaches art courses at Lipscomb\nUniversity. \nJobe’s studio practice is focused on sculpture\, installation\, and public art. His solo\nexhibitions/ projects have been on view at venues such as Mixed Greens Gallery (New\nYork\, NY)\, Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum (San Antonio\, TX)\, the University of\nWyoming (Laramie\, WY)\, the University of Tennessee College of Architecture + Design\n(Knoxville\, TN)\, and the McNay Art Museum (San Antonio\, TX). \nBorn in Houston\, Texas and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee\, Jobe received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee in 2004 and Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2006. After living in Brooklyn\, NY for a time\, he relocated with his wife\, painter Carolyn Jobe\, to Tennessee.
