SUMMARY:Microcinema Club: Slamdance Shorts
DESCRIPTION:To follow last month’s Sundance shorts\, we are featuring “anarchy” work from their neighbor SLAMDANCE.  The Slamdance film festival was born out of a DIY oppositional gesture. Their “Anarchy” shorts category is an attempt to recapture the early spirit of the festival. The casual cinephile might associate the Anarchy program with avant-garde\, transgressive\, or underground cinema. It is all of these things and none of them\, it is an anti-genre\, the form of resistance to dominant cultural paradigms. The films value innovation of form\, violation of taboo\, and disdain for institutional modes of representation. \n7 pm doors open | 7:30 pm screening | Pay-what-you can admission | Free food & drinks \nSUPPORTED BY ARTSMEMPHIS AND THE FIRST TENNESSEE FOUNDATION | ARTSFIRST

SUMMARY:Inside Outsiders
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, July 22\, 6-9 pm\nOn view Friday\, July 22-Sunday\, July 24\, noon-6 pm\n\nA collaborative exhibition sharing studio work by Paint Memphis mural artists \n“Graffiti and murals have gone through an evolution and will only continue to evolve. The ins and outs of bold face lettering\, outlining of text and images\, and unusual use of paint has changed the way in which we view spaces and walls. They have become way-findings and geographical markers for communities and these artistic narratives and colorful writings on walls mark the spaces and communities we inhabit. Muralists and graffiti writers are often the first to recognize the potential in abandoned spaces and the first to act on the transformation of those spaces. We often celebrate these markers by taking photos\, writing blogs\, sharing on social media\, and the favorite\, posing in front of the painted artworks for the perfect memory. Paint Memphis strives to showcase the talent of these artists who use our walls to tell their stories. This is Inside Outsiders.” \nPresented by Paint Memphis\nin collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n  \n

SUMMARY:Joseph Camp: Gravity Waves
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural solo exhibition by Joseph Camp \nGravity Waves will consist of intimate gouache paintings. This body of work challenges the viewers’ Jungian sense of personal experience. Camp says\, ”It’s about the inherent value of experience and the role of visual retention.” \nHis work is comprised of spirited strokes and self-actuated symbols embedded within geometric shapes of color. Balancing simplicity and complexity\, or the intentional lack of either\, is an issue that Joseph addresses with intention and sincerity. \nFor more information\, contact the artist: Joseph Camp\njoseph@josephcamp.com\n901-596-7365
