DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents singer-songwriter Wyly Bigger in The Green Room. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $10 \nGrowing up just across the Mississippi River from Memphis\, it didn’t take long for Wyly Bigger to find a love of music. At age four\, he began teaching himself melodies on the piano by ear. He started taking lessons the same year and began developing his skills and sound. His first gig came at the age of nine when he started playing frequently at his local hometown diner in Arkansas. From there\, he expanded his reach across the river to Memphis and down Highway 61 to Mississippi. At seventeen\, he began writing his own music. Raised on the sounds of Memphis legends like Jerry Lee Lewis\, B.B. King\, and Elvis Presley\, Wyly mixed those influences with the blues from nearby Mississippi and the country music in Arkansas to develop his own musical style. Since then\, he has been writing more and more each year and recently was selected as a finalist for the Memphis Songwriters’ Association’s 2021 Songwriter of the Year. \nWyly released his debut self-titled EP in February of 2021 to a warm reception\, getting radio airplay from as far away as California and landing Wyly a spot on Ditty TV’s “12 Artists You Need to Know.” Consisting of five original songs\, Wyly Bigger’s EP can be found on all streaming platforms. \nNow 24 years old\, Wyly has taken his music to venues across the South from Memphis to New Orleans to Nashville. Hailed as a band with “galactic ambitions” by The New Orleans Advocate\, Blato Zlato features musicians from Europe and the United States with a collective goal to produce meaningful cultural and musical bridges between the two continents. In 2019\, Blato Zlato released their anticipated sophomore album\, In The Wake\, following their acclaimed 2017 releases of their debut album Swamp Gold and the limited-edition EP Voyage. They have toured both within the U.S. on the East and West Coasts as well as in Europe. This is their first time performing in Memphis.

The program includes works by Jennifer Jolley\, Caroline Shaw\, and Michael Fiday. \nThe music of Evan Williams has been performed across the country and internationally by members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra\, the International Contemporary Ensemble\, QuinceEnsemble\, Fifth House Ensemble\, and at festivals such as SEAMUS\, the New Music Gathering\, the Electroacoustic Barn Dance\, and the New York City Electronic Music Festival. He has been commissioned by notable performers and ensembles including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Urban Playground Chamber Orchestra. His work can be found on recordings by The Namaste Ensemble’s “No Borders Quartet” and Levels. Williams has received a number of awards and honors\, including serving as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural Classical Roots Composer-in-Residence in 2018. Williams holds a DMA in Composition with a cognate in Orchestral Conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati\, where he also served as a teaching assistant in electronic music. He also holds degrees from Bowling Green State University and Lawrence University. Williams serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities at Rhodes College\, where he teaches composition\, music technology\, and leads the Rhodes Orchestra. He previously held teaching positions at Lawrence University\, Bennington College\, and at the Walden School. \nJennifer Jolley is a composer\, blogger\, and professor person. She is also a cat lover and part-time creative opera producer. Jennifer’s work draws toward subjects that are political and even provocative. Her collaboration with librettist Kendall A\, Prisoner of Conscience\, has been described as “the ideal soundtrack and perhaps balm for our current ‘toxic’…times” by Frank J. Oteri of NewMusicBox. Her piece Blue Glacier Decoy\, written as a musical response to the Olympic National Park\, depicts the melting glaciers of the Pacific Northwest. Her partnership with writer Scott Woods\, You Are Not Alone\, evokes the fallout of the #MeToo Movement. Jennifer’s works have been performed by ensembles worldwide. She has received commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music\, the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble\, Quince Ensemble\, and many others. \nCaroline Shaw is a New York-based musician — vocalist\, violinist\, composer\, and producer — who performs in solo and collaborative projects. She was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013 for Partita for 8 Voices\, written for the Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth\, of which she is a member. Caroline’s film scores include Erica Fae’s To Keep the Light and Josephine Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline as well as the upcoming short 8th Year of the Emergency by Maureen Towey. She has produced for Kanye West (The Life of Pablo; Ye) and Nas (NASIR)\, and has contributed to records by The National\, and by Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry. \nDescribed as “clearly structured\, colorful and unflaggingly compelling work” (Philadelphia Inquirer) and “a precise appeal to an inner ear beyond the mind” (Gramophone Magazine)\, the music of Michael Fiday is known for its expressive directness\, inventive sound world\, gradually unfolding dramatic narratives\, and distinctive rhythmic energy. DESCRIPTION:Join Hermon Mehari\, an award-winning jazz trumpeter based in Paris\, France\, and Kansas City-based vibraphonist and pianist Peter Schlamb for a special performance in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $15\nStudent tickets: $5 (limited availability\, available at the door with student ID) \nHermon Mehari’s sophomore album as a leader\, “A Change For the Dreamlike\,” takes on a more personal tone. Written and recorded in a barn in the French countryside during le confinement\, it shows only hints at the aesthetic set by his debut album. The songs play like personal journal entries\, versions and visions of wishes\, fantasies\, and memories. Together they create a kind of modern mixtape of dreams\, in every sense of the word\, in which the trumpet is a vulnerable presence. The project features a number of incredible musicians: Tony Tixier\, Peter Schlamb\, Ryan J. Lee\, Kae Dilla\, DeAndre Manning\, Hugo LX\, Karl McComas-Reichl\, Jeff Hill\, and Zach Morrow. \nMehari was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competition and placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild competition in Sydney\, Australia. As a founding member of Diverse\, whose eponymous debut album on Seattle-based Origin Records reached the Top 40 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts\, he has performed professionally with noted saxophonists Jaleel Shaw\, Logan Richardson\, Bobby Watson\, Ben Van Gelder\, and Tivon Pennicott. He has also performed with Aaron Parks\, Joe Sanders\, Hubert Laws\, Randy Brecker\, Tony Tixier\, Dave Pietro\, Clay Jenkins\, and many other great musicians. \nPeter Schlamb is a vibraphonist and pianist based in Kansas City\, MO. He recently released a second album \,“Electric Tinks\,” and maintains a busy schedule performing locally\, nationally\, and internationally. Peter spent several years in New York\, where he attended and graduated from New School University. During his time in New York\, he recorded and performed with artists including Logan Richardson\, David Binney\, Mike Moreno\, and Ben van Gelder. Peter currently leads the group Electric Tinks and is a member of Logan Richardson’s Blues People\, as well as frequently performing with several other ensembles around the world.

Jon used his time at Crosstown Arts to film interviews with anyone in the Queer community in Memphis willing to sit down and talk. Tell Me a Memory is the result of those sessions. Join Crosstown Arts and filmmaker Jon Bryant Crawford for a screening of Tell Me a Memory at Crosstown Theater. The screening will be followed with a panel discussion with Mr. Crawford. \nFROM THE FILMMAKER: “I fell in love with a man in my early twenties who was older than I. His family had a history of dementia and Alzheimers. We were closeted\, and I worried what would happen to our love story if he lost his memory. No one knew about us\, and I wanted some marker of it in the world. Even if it was found years later\, it would be something. I made a short film about that fear\, and when the short played at festivals\, other gay men told me their stories. I wanted a place to keep some of these memories\, little things that might be overlooked\, but are poetic and meaningful nonetheless\, those little things I hear from other Queer folks I run into out in the world. When I had the opportunity to spend some time in Memphis\, I wanted to try and capture stories from the community in a very undisrupted style\, with us all just sharing\, and place them in one place as a document for future generations.” \nABOUT JON BRYANT CRAWFORD is a filmmaker\, writer\, and photographer exploring the loneliness of American masculinity and the celebration of Queer resilience through the perspective of a gay\, mixed-race Southerner.
