SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series: Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. July’s performance features guitarist Pierre Bensusan in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \n“The way the guitar would want to sound if it played itself.” \n“Bensusan is very much his own animal. It’s like listening to a butterfly\, to dappled sunshine coming through quaking aspens. His music flits and darts around like fish in a pool. And his compositions manage to encompass both the calmness of the pool and the flashing of the fish. It’s an entrancing\, almost hypnotic thing to watch and hear\, as he seems eager to share his journey\, his light. I was struck by how the aim of each song was to be beautiful. Not witty\, not avant-garde\, not new\, necessarily\, but beautiful. A great craftsman plying his trade. A shepherd with his flock. As I left\, I felt all of a sudden that I’d been to temple after all. My own sort of temple\, and by the end of the service I felt purified\, cleansed\, and ready for the new year.” — Nyack News and Views (USA\, Dan Cohen\, Oct 4\, 2015) \nWinner of the Independent Music Award\, in the Live Performance Album category for his latest triple live album “Encore” (2014)\, “Rose d’Or” of the Montreux Festival for his first album\, “Près de Paris” (Switzerland\, 1976)\, “Best World Music Guitar Player ” by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine (USA\, 2008)\, Pierre Bensusan is recognized as one of the premier musicians of our time. \nIf “World Music” is music that pays tribute to the spirit of a collection of human beings through distinct rhythms\, traditional instruments\, and harmonic colors\, French-Algerian guitarist\, singer\, and composer Pierre Bensusan can be recognized as one of the most eloquent and world musicians today. \nBorn in Oran\, French-Algeria in 1957\, when France was decolonizing its Empire\, Pierre Bensusan’s family moved to Paris when he was four. He began formal studies on piano at the age of 7\, and\, at 11\, taught himself guitar. Influenced in those early days by the folk revival blooming in Britain\, France\, and North America\, Bensusan began first to explore his own diverse musical heritage and then moved to the horizons beyond. \nAt 17\, he signed his first recording contract\, and one year later\, his first album “Pres de Paris” won the Grand Prix du Disque upon his debut at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland. \nDescribed by the L.A. Times as “one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today\,” Pierre’s name became synonymous with contemporary acoustic guitar genius\, long before the terms New Age\, New Acoustic Music\, or World Music were invented. He has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet\, Bensusan is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist\, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique. \nThere is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work\, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His “manner” of playing defies classification – crossing world\, classical\, jazz\, traditional\, folk and more. None can be isolated as simply “Brazilian”\, “Arabic” or “French”; rather\, they represent our world in its current state\, a world sharing itself\, fusing cultures together in ways we have never experienced. A great ambassador of peace. Not to be missed!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Kraftwerk 3-D at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:This tour has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \nElectro pioneers Kraftwerk are bringing their 50th anniversary tour to the Kemmons Wilson Family Stage at Crosstown Theater. The performance will benefit Crosstown Arts\, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2020. \nSOLD OUT\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nKraftwerk celebrate 50th anniversary with a North American tour. Bringing together music and performance art\, Kraftwerk 3-D concerts are a true “Gesamtkunstwerk” – a total work of art. \nThe multi-media project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf\, Germany\, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums. \nBy the mid 1970s\, Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic sound scapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future\, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century. \nTheir compositions\, using innovative techniques\, synthetic voices\, and computerized rhythms\, have had a major international influence across an entire range of musical genres: from Electro to Hip Hop\, from Techno to SynthPop. \nIn their live performances\, Kraftwerk — Ralf Hütter\, Henning Schmitz\, Fritz Hilpert\, Falk Grieffenhagen — illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine. \nStarting with the retrospective of their catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012\, Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. \nThe 3-D concert series at MoMA was followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London)\, Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo) Opera House (Sydney)\, Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles)\, Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris)\, Neue National Galerie (Berlin)\, and Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao). \nIn 2014\, Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Modern Masters Jazz Series feat. Geoff Clapp
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Modern Masters Jazz Series\, a monthly series featuring jazz soloists from around the country. \nAugust’s concert will feature award-winning drummer Geoff Clapp in a spectacular performance with the series house band\, The Ted Ludwig Trio. \nTickets: $20\nDoors 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nAbout Geoff Clapp:\nWhile Geoff Clapp was a high school student at the North Carolina School of the Arts (studying classical percussion and playing in the school’s jazz band)\, he had the opportunity to meet and hear New Orleanians\, including trumpeter Wynton Marsalis\, pianist Ellis Marsalis\, and drummer Herlin Riley (All-Star 1991). “I never knew drums could be played like that\,” exclaims Clapp of Riley’s style and talents. “That really sparked my true interest in jazz.” \nThese events ultimately resulted in Clapp attending the University of New Orleans in the fall of 1989. He was among the first talented group of musicians\, which included drummer Brian Blade (All-Star 1993)\, trumpeter Jeremy Davenport (All-Star 2000)\, and bassist Chris Thomas (All-Star 1999) in the new jazz studies program headed by Ellis Marsalis. “We were just a bunch of hoodlums trying to play jazz\,” says Clapp with a chuckle. \nAbout the series:\nThe Modern Masters Jazz Series is guest-curated by renowned two-decade New Orleans jazz guitarist Ted Ludwig\, who has received an ASCAP award\, the Louis Armstrong award\, and the Overture to the Cultural Season award and is a member of The Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. Each month in 2020\, Crosstown Arts welcomes jazz artists from New Orleans\, NYC\, LA\, and beyond\, who will perform with the Ted Ludwig Trio. Highlights include Roseanna Vitro\, who has sung with Christian McBride\, Elvin Jones\, and Lionel Hampton; Ed Cherry\, of Dizzy Gillespie’s band; GRAMMY-winner Victor Atkins; and Dee Dee Bridgewater saxophonist Ed Peterson.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series: Shane Hennessy
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. August’s performance features Irish virtuoso guitarist Shane Hennessy in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nIrish virtuoso guitarist Shane Hennessy has established himself as one of the leading guitarists on the world stage\, known widely for his fingerstyle\, flatpicking\, and percussive guitar-playing approaches. With a unique style of solo guitar playing that encompasses the range of a whole band – covering drums\, bass\, rhythm\, and lead lines – Shane builds a complete sonic world entirely on his own. \nBilled as “one of the most exciting live performers of his generation\, with an ability to move between styles and genres with ease” by Irish Music Magazine\, audiences can never be too sure what will come next during the exciting mix of jazz\, blues\, country\, soul\, traditional Irish music\, and world music he offers. With the addition of some smooth vocals\, genre-hopping improvisations\, and well-arranged covers\, it makes sense why music legend super-producer Nile Rodgers (CHIC) thinks that “his style is killer\, it’s really cool stuff\,” and why guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel says that Shane “is one of the most engaging musicians in the world today.” \nOver the course of a performance\, Hennessy brings the audience from elated highs to the depths of reflection\, delivering stories\, anecdotes\, and off-the-cuff remarks with the same passion he holds for the music he performs. He says that it is hard to describe in words what he does on stage without experiencing it in person\, but it becomes clear upon witnessing his performance why his tour schedule is so hectic. In 2019 alone\, he will visit much of mainland Europe\, Russia\, China\, and the United States\, the pinnacle of this world tour being a solo set at the prestigious MerleFest in North Carolina\, widely recognized as the mecca of Americana and Roots music in the USA. \nA musician from a young age\, he credits his background in Irish traditional music as the base on which he has built his genre-defying musical explorations. Initially a concertina player under the tuition of the renowned Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh\, Hennessy first turned to the guitar when he was inspired by the music of James Taylor. Becoming more interested in songwriting and in music in general\, it was when he discovered the styles of Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins that his interest in solo performance blossomed. From that point on\, he has toured the world\, with thousands of shows under his belt\, and a proven track record as a performer\, songwriter\, arranger\, accompanist\, and session musician. \nA highlight of his career to date has been a sold-out a solo show in The National Concert Hall in Dublin\, Ireland\, for the release of his latest CD ‘Marrakech’. Another milestone in 2018 was when Shane worked with Bill Whelan\, Grammy-award winning composer of Riverdance\, on a piece of music commissioned for guitar\, piano\, and string quartet. He has also given numerous lectures and guitar workshops all over the world for guitarists and musicians eager to learn more about his unique musical approach. \nStill\, given his successes to date\, he is always eager to keep pushing the boundaries of what he can do on one guitar. To quote RTÉ Radio host Marty Whelan: “There was part of me that didn’t really believe that he could do what he does on one guitar until he came into the studio\, sat down in front of me\, and played. I thought there had to be loops\, or extra tracks\, or recording tricks\, and there was none of that – my jaw dropped! What a talent!”

SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series: Pearl Django
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. September’s performance features Pearl Django in an intimate performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nWith a performance history spanning more than two decades\, Pearl Django endures as one of the most highly regarded Hot Club style groups working today. Although the band’s roots are firmly in the music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli\, its extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions. Pearl Django has performed at festivals\, dances\, and nightspots throughout the U.S. and abroad. They have played at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine and have been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” The band’s signature style is marked by pristine and dexterous string work\, colors of Bal Musette\, the steady pulse of rhythm guitar\, and an unmistakable swing that delights audiences of all musical sensibilities. Throughout the years\, Pearl Django has cultivated a devoted and enthusiastic following and they continue to play to packed houses wherever they perform. \n“Pearl Django play(s) gypsy jazz … and they do it with such verve\, skill\, and pleasure that they’re pretty much irresistible to jazz and non-jazz listeners alike.” — Seattle Weekly \n“Pearl Django: The gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt done to perfection!” — Paul de Barros\, The Seattle Times \nMembers: Tim Lerch & Jim Char\, Guitar; Michael Gray\, Violin; David Lange\, Accordion; Rick Leppanen\, Bass \nThe group’s inception was as a trio in Tacoma\, Washington in 1994. The focus of Pearl Django was\, and is\, to incorporate the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with American swing music. They quickly expanded to a quintet\, adding a violinist and a third guitarist. In 1999\, along with the release of their third and fourth CDs\, the group incorporated their own record label\, Modern Hot Records. At about the same time\, MHR signed a national distribution agreement with City Hall Records in San Rafael\, California. The October 2000 release of Avalon put the group on the national map with seven weeks of Gavin top-forty airplay and current sales of over 17\,000 copies. In May 2001\, Pearl Django was featured on All Things Considered. In June 2002\, Pearl Django performed at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine\, just outside of Paris\, France. As of 2007 Pearl Django is working as both a quartet and a quintet (with accordionist\, David Lange). All of the members are contributing original compositions to the band’s expansive repertoire. They have released 13 CDs to date. \n“If Paris is the city of love\, then Pearl Django’s music is the flirtatious accompaniment.”\n— 6Moons.com\, review of Under Paris Skies.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Modern Masters Jazz Series feat. Howard Alden
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series\, a monthly series featuring jazz soloists from around the country. \nFor October’s performance\, jazz guitarist Howard Alden will be featured in an unforgettable performance with the series house band\, The Ted Ludwig Trio. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \n“He may be the best of his generation\,” writes Owen Cordle in JazzTimes. George Kanzler of the Newark Star Ledger proclaims that he is “the most impressive and creative member of a new generation of jazz guitarists.” And Chip Deffaa of the New York Post observed that he is “…one of the very finest young guitarists working today.” \nIt seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which the critics have debate is whether the remarkable jazz guitarist is one of the best or simply the best. \nBorn in Newport Beach\, California\, in 1958\, Howard began playing at age ten\, inspired by recordings of Armstrong\, Basie\, and Goodman\, as well as those by guitarists Barney Kessel\, Charlie Christian\, Django Reinhardt\, and George Van Eps. Soon\, he was working professionally around Los Angeles\, playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. In 1979\, Alden went east for a summer in Atlantic City with Red Norvo\, and continued to perform with him frequently for several years. \nUpon moving to New York City in 1982\, Alden’s skills\, both as soloist and accompanist\, were quickly recognized and sought-out for appearances and recordings with such artists as Joe Bushkin\, Ruby Braff\, Joe Williams\, Warren Vache\, and Woody Herman. \nHe has continued to win accolades from critics and musicians alike\, adding Benny Carter\, Flip Phillips\, Mel Powell\, Bud Freeman\, Kenny Davern\, Clark Terry\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and George Van Eps\, as well as notable contemporaries such as Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski to his list of impressive credits. \nHoward Alden has been a Concord Jazz recording artist since the late ’80s\, where his prolific recorded output as leader\, co-leader\, and versatile sideman has captured an artist of consistently astonishing virtuosity and originality. \nHoward Alden was voted “Best Emerging Talent-Guitar” in the first annual JazzTimes critics’ poll\, 1990\, and “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” in the 1996\, 1992\, 1993\, and 1995 Downbeat critics’ poll. In February of 2009\, Howard was recognized as a “Modern Maestro\,” one of DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE’S 75 Great Guitarists of all time. “An original virtuoso.”

SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series: Don Ross
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. October’s performance features Canadian guitarist Don Ross in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nIn 1988\, Don became the first Canadian to win the U.S. National Fingerpick Guitar Championship. He won again in 1996\, still the only two-time winner of the competition. He signed a recording deal with Toronto-based Duke Street Records and released three CDs for them between 1989 and 1993. He then recorded three CDs for Sony/Columbia between 1994 and 1997\, and then three more for Milwaukee-based Narada Records between 1999 and 2003. \nWith the collapse of the conventional recording industry in the early 21st century\, Don entered into a new venture with Milwaukee-based CandyRat Records and its founder\, Rob Poland. The move to a completely internet-based model of releasing recordings resulted in the first ever CandyRat CD\, 2005’s Music for Vacuuming. Don has released numerous CDs and DVDs for the new label\, including his new album\, A Million Brazilian Civilians\, on CD and see-through orange vinyl. \nDon has toured regularly since 1989\, across Canada\, the USA\, a dozen European countries\, Japan\, Taiwan\, China\, Australia\, Russia\, and India. He has played with symphony orchestras in Canada and Germany and collaborated live and on recording with U.S. guitarist Andy McKee\, Canadian singer/guitarist Brooke Miller\, Canadian guitarist Calum Graham\, and Toronto bassist Jordan O’Connor. He also composes scores for television\, radio\, and film\, and does production and recording engineering for a variety of other musicians. In addition to acoustic guitar\, Don also plays electric guitar\, slide dobro and lapsteel guitar\, harp guitar\, voice\, piano\, keyboards\, bass guitar\, and drums. He has just started learning to play the Kelstone\, a 9-string guitar developed by Belgian musician/inventor Jan Van Kelst. At this point\, Don admits that learning a new instrument from scratch at this point in his career is “humbling. I’m a rank amateur Kelstone player\, and I still completely suck at it!” \nDon Ross grew up in Montreal\, has lived at various times in Ontario\, Nova Scotia\, the USA\, China\, and Quebec\, and now resides in Halifax.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Modern Masters Jazz Series feat. Victor Atkins
DESCRIPTION:This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Modern Masters Jazz Series\, a monthly series featuring jazz soloists from around the country. \nFor November’s performance\, New Orleans-based pianist Victor Atkins will be featured in an unforgettable performance with the series house band\, The Ted Ludwig Trio. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nVictor “Red” Atkins is known for being a “powerful and unconventional” piano player. Victor is a native of Selma\, Alabama\, and currently lives in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Atkins had an early start with jazz as his father loved Charlie Parker. At home\, he learned how to appreciate music and develop an ear for more complex music. \nHe began his professional career on Delfeayo Marsalis’ “Pontius Pilate’s Decision” record. After recording he moved on to be a professional pianist alongside many notable musicians such as Elvin Jones\, Mark Whitfield\, Nnenna Freelon\, Joshua Redman\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Leroy Jones. Subsequently\, he returned to school to finish his Masters at the Manhattan School of Music. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1998. Atkins is well-known for his work with Grammy-winning\, New Orleans-based Los Hombres Calientes as well as his re-working of Duke Ellington’s “Such Sweet Thunder\,” a tribute to William Shakespeare. \nNot only is Victor Atkins a professional musician but also a tenured professor at the University of New Orleans\, where he teaches theory\, composition\, jazz keyboard\, and applied piano. He also works with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra on compositions\, and has played with them numerous times. Victor Atkins credits Donald Brown as his mentor. His studies with him had the largest impact\, and it is when he developed a sincere appreciation for jazz.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series: Brooks Robertson
DESCRIPTION:This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. November’s performance features guitarist Brooks Robertson in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nBrooks Robertson just doesn’t need much more than two thumbs\, eight fingers\, and six strings on a wooden box to carry his listeners away. \nHailed by prominent exponents of his instrument like Nokie Edwards\, Thom Bresh\, John Jorgenson\, and Mason Williams\, the young fingerstyle guitarist embodies the creative vision of a postmodern world: It’s the music that counts. Brooks utilizes his superb technical abilities to play bass\, rhythm\, and melody simultaneously and surpass the borders of conventional genres. He merges hauntingly beautiful compositions\, country rhythms\, and jazzy harmonies with funky licks into his very own art form – sometimes delivered with a punch\, sometimes with a smile. \nBrooks was born in Eugene\, Oregon\, in 1989. Seeing Buster B. Jones perform at a festival near his hometown became a life-changing experience for the kid from the sticks. At just eleven years old\, he was immediately inclined to pick up the guitar. Soon\, the world-renowned fingerstyle virtuoso and instructor dedicated his spare time to introducing his new fans into the secrets of the fretboard\, and after six months of lessons the natural talent performed his first show with his mentor. \nWhen Buster B. Jones took him under his wings\, Brooks began playing high-profile gigs such as the Nokie Edwards Festival\, the NAMM Show in Anaheim\, the Montreal Jazz Festival\, or the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield among others. By the time he was a teenager he had become the youngest endorsee of Godin Guitars and traveled to several states and foreign countries to perform. Brooks went on to play on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio classic “A Prairie Home Companion” in 2004\, where he won first place in a talent competition for 12 to 20 year old participants. \nIn recent years\, while still appearing regularly at prestigious events like the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) Convention in Nashville\, Brooks focused on perfecting his craft\, soaking up new tunes\, styles\, and techniques\, as well as blending them into his own groovy and soulful original music. He entered the “Yamaha Six String Theory Guitar Competition\,” which drew participants from more than 40 countries all over the world. Brooks was invited to perform in the finals at the Broad Stage in Los Angeles in March 2010. A star-studded jury\, including Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour\, eventually chose him as winner of the country category and second place winner overall. \nAlthough he is deeply rooted in the powerful tradition of the genre\, founded by the likes of Merle Travis\, Jerry Reed\, Thom Bresh\, and Buster B. Jones\, Brooks also draws inspiration from the elegant mastery of the legendary Chet Atkins and other phenomenal players. His own compositions and arrangements have even been compared to fingerstyle jazz champions Lenny Breau and Earl Klugh. Now\, as energy and maturity come together\, this young man is ready to step out of his mentor’s shadows and electrify the world with the sheer acoustic beauty his fingers create\, when touching a set of strings. \n“The future of American fingerstyle guitar” – Buster B. Jones \n“I’ve always loved playing with Brooks. He’s a joy to be around!” – Tommy Emmanuel CGP \n“I was completely knocked out with the acoustic guitar virtuosity of Brooks Robertson! Brooks has a very original touch and sound\, plus monster chops. He’s always making great music with his guitar. I’m sure Brooks will be sharing his music with the entire world and have an incredible career.” – Lee Ritenour \n“Brooks Robertson plays like the house is on fire.” – Thom Bresh \n“All guitar players are like Frankensteins. Their music is made out of bits and pieces of other players. In Brooks’ case\, he’s a son of a Frankenchops\, the well-known monster picker Buster B. Jones. Buster and Brooks are both so scary … the legend continues.” – Mason Williams \n“Brooks Robertson has one of the very best techniques in fingerstyle guitar. You can hear the influences of Buster B. Jones\, Jerry Reed\, and all the great fingerpickers past … and he’s writing some fabulous new material. An amazing guitar player who’s showing the rest of us how it’s done! Nobody whops Brooks Robertson!” – Richard Smith

SUMMARY:Virtual Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artists Sepideh Dashti\, Joann Self Selvidge\, and Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo will present artist talks in a virtual event. \nFree and open to the public \nRegister here \n\nArtist Bios \nSepideh Tajalizadeh Dashti\nSepideh Tajalizadeh Dashti is an emerging interdisciplinary artist. Her recent practice is related to exploring her body by creating performance\, video\, photography\, and installations. Through multiple discourses and contexts\, she is always rediscovering\, reinventing\, and reinterpreting her Iranian identity as a pivotal point for exploring her work in multiple and heterogeneous contexts. \nJoann Self Selvidge\nJoann Self Selvidge is an award-winning filmmaker whose documentaries explore issues of work\, creativity\, agency\, and justice. Since 2002\, she has produced\, directed\, and edited more than two dozen projects\, including features (Juvenile\, See the Keepers\, The Art Academy\, The WLOK Story)\, shorts (Robert\, Viola\, Voices of Jericho\, Nude Photos!)\, series (The Juvenile Project\, The Arts Interviews)\, and multimedia installations (Inaugurate the Resistance). \nSarah Elizabeth Cornejo\nSarah Elizabeth Cornejo’s sculptural work utilizes the possibilities within hybridity to speak of a hypothetical place where humans have evolved into hybrid beings with animals\, insects\, and discarded human-made materials. The resulting physical evolution of this voluntary merging challenges social discomfort around bodies that are not easily categorized by blurring the boundaries between animal and human\, living and dead\, animate and inanimate. Her work aims to disrupt notions of human hierarchy\, testing the phenomenon between humanity\, mammality and technology in a chimeric future.

SUMMARY:Mempho presents Arlo McKinley
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nGifted singer-songwriter Arlo McKinley will release his debut solo record at age 40 on John Prine’s Oh Boy records — after he almost gave up on music altogether. His story is one of hope and sincerity\, and he is living proof that great songs will reach the right ears eventually\, even if it takes time. \nMcKinley’s Oh Boy Records solo debut\, Die Midwestern\, is deeply rooted in street soul\, country\, punk\, and gospel and draws on personal stories\, set against the backdrop of his hometown of Cincinnati\, Ohio. It was crafted down river\, in Memphis’ legendary Sam Phillips Recording Service\, produced by GRAMMY Award-winning Matt Ross-Spang\, with an all-star Memphis band of Ken Coomer\, David Smith\, Will Sexton\, Rick Steff\, Jessie Munson\, and Reba Russell. There\, McKinley recorded ten remarkable songs\, some dating back fifteen years \, all penned with weight\, honesty\, and gritty hope that comes from living in the rustbelt city where his songs were born. \nMatt Ross-Spang stated\, “I am in awe of Arlo’s songs and his dedication and embodiment of each one when he performs them. His willingness to bare it all on this record was more electric than the equipment used to capture it.” \nArlo McKinley is the last artist John Prine and his son Jody Whelan signed together to their label Oh Boy records. \nJody Whelan shared\, “John was reserved in his praise for songwriters. I played him a couple of Arlo’s songs\, and he heard “Bag Of Pills” and said\, “That’s a good song\,” which for him\, was very high praise. He loved Arlo’s voice\, this big guy with a sweet\, soulful\, gospel voice. He loved the dichotomy of the hard life lived\, presented through such beautiful songs\, and John was very excited about the promise of the album’s release.” \nMcKinley stated\, “The feeling of knowing that a hero of mine took time out of his day to come see me perform is such an accomplishment in itself that if it all ended the next day\, and I found out music just wasn’t in the cards for me\, I would’ve still considered everything I have done as a success.” \nOn Die Midwestern\, McKinley’s songs bleed truth and emotion from a heart scarred by wild nights and redeemed by soulful Sunday morning confessions. His lyrics are laid bare\, stark and arresting in their honesty\, and often penned from real-life experience. “Bag Of Pills” is an autobiographical and frank account of the drug issues which affect his hometown. \n“I wrote it after I sold some pills so I could take a girl out. Those were rough times and also right around the time I started seeing real drug addiction very close to me. After watching so many friends die from drug abuse\, it turned into me praying that it doesn’t get any worse while knowing that it will\, resulting in my writing of the lyrics\, ‘Life\, I don’t want it if it’s so easy to die.’” \n“Gone For Good” sees McKinley share his lessons from broken relationships. \n“I wrote ‘Gone For Good’ after a serious\, long relationship of mine ended. It’s about me realizing how short I fell on even trying to make it work.” Title track “Die Midwestern” reflects on McKinley’s love/hate relationship with Ohio\, “I love it because it’s everything that I am\, but I hate it because I’ve seen it take my loved ones lives. I’ve seen it make hopeful people hopeless.” McKinley reflects on his brutal honesty in his songs\, “Songwriting has to be real. I’m 100% putting myself out there. I’m not writing fiction. To me\, it is just about honesty. ” \nBy age 8\, McKinley was singing at his family’s church\, Bethlehem United Baptist\, where he first saw the light of music. Early musical loves outside church were his Kentucky native father’s bluegrass and timeless country records of Hank Williams\, Sr.\, as well as\, Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, Otis Redding\, and George Jones. Then his two older brothers’ punk and metal collection drove him to throw himself raw onto the Cincinnati punk scene. \n“I grew up in the punk scene with my brothers\, and dad has all of that stuff that came out of King Records like Hank Williams\, and I was just surrounded by it\,” McKinley says. “I still take parts of it\, and I feel I write songs in a punk rock way.” \nWith concert covers ranging from Johnny Paycheck and The Misfits to Rihanna and Post Malone\, McKinley shows a diverse range of musical interest\, which he attributes to the musical melting pot of the Cincinnati scene. \n“You go back to the history of Cincinnati music\, and you can see and feel that the river back then connected everything\, and it all flowed into one spot and brought all kinds of music here\,” says McKinley\, adding\, “That’s why I think this town has never been known for one kind of music because so many things came through here.” \nHe pursued a solo career in 2014 with his own band The Lonesome Sound and achieved some success\, including a nomination for Album of the Year\, Songwriter of the Year\, and Best Americana Act from the Cincinnati Music Awards\, but his career stalled and he almost gave up altogether. \n“I don’t know why the world works the way it does\, but I’m beyond grateful to be in this situation.” McKinley stated\, adding\, “ I’m a little wiser in my ways and a 20-something me would’ve found a way to destroy the one dream that has stuck with me my entire life — being a working musician.” \nHe also almost missed his big break\, which came when he was offered an opening slot for Tyler Childers and his now-manager was trying to reach him on the phone to offer him an opening slot. Arlo initially dodged the persistent unknown caller. Eventually\, they connected after a friend hit him up on social media and he took the call. \n“My buddy was like\, ‘Arlo\, Tyler’s team is trying to get hold of you.’ I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t take that call. Still delivering tuxedos\, which was my side job before I was a full-time musician.” \nSince\, McKinley has been making a name for himself around the country\, humbly sharing stages with kindred musical spirits John Moreland\, Jason Isbell\, Justin Townes Earle\, and contemporary rising singer/songwriters Ian Noe and Colter Wall\, eventually attracting the attention of Oh Boy\, who signed him in March 2020. \nMcKinley reflects on the significance of the timing of his release\, stating\, “I only met John briefly\, and I would’ve loved to have sat with John and talked music\, which I’m sure would’ve happened\, but I treasure the moment we had together when he came to see me play a show. His passing was a major knockdown blow for the entire team. I’m sure John had a vision for Oh Boy Records\, and I’m proud and honored to be able to contribute to the labels continued legacy.” \nMcKinley’s Die Midwestern remains an album of hope\, and he knows first-hand how his music can connect with his growing audience. \n“I had a guy who was dealing with brain cancer walk up to me and say that he was done with it\, but something in my songs resonated with him and made him get out and start living even though he knows what is ahead of him. Nothing is more important than that. That’s why I write songs like I do. I’m just another lost\, hurting person in this place. I just like to sing about it.”

SUMMARY:Reigning Sound
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Memphis garage rockers Reigning Sound at Crosstown Theater. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nTickets: $20 advance\n \nTickets are $25 on day of show \nFounded by Memphis blues-punk legend Greg Cartwright — a former member of the Oblivians\, the Compulsive Gamblers\, and ’68 Comeback — Reigning Sound fuse the hot-wired energy of garage rock with the deep emotional resonance of classic soul music in a manner that suggests a cross between the early Rolling Stones and the Sonics. While the band could rock convincingly\, Cartwright’s songwriting showed a maturity and emotional strength that set him apart from the majority of garage rock acts\, and the group’s R&B accents reflected the intelligent passion of the songs. Reigning Sound proved they could wail hard on 2002’s Time Bomb High School\, but their work with Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las on her 2007 solo effort Dangerous Game\, 2014’s mature\, impassioned Shattered\, and 2021’s A Little More Time with Reigning Sound found them turning up their soul influences as they employed a more dynamic approach. \nFeaturing Cartwright on vocals and guitar\, Jeremy Scott on bass\, Greg Roberson on drums\, and Alex Greene on keyboards and guitar\, Reigning Sound made their recorded debut with a three-song 7″ in May of 2001; their first full-length album\, Break Up Break Down\, was released a month later on Sympathy for the Record Industry. In August of 2002\, the group upped the rock quotient on its second album (and first for In the Red)\, Time Bomb High School\, and the group landed a high-profile gig opening for Swedish garage wunderkinds the Hives on their North American tour. Alex Greene dropped out as a full-time group member by the time 2004’s Too Much Guitar was released\, though he did appear on the disc as a guest musician\, and the band followed its release with more touring\, both as a headliner and once again as opener for the Hives. The band also gained another well-known champion in Little Steven Van Zandt\, who gave the band frequent airplay on his syndicated radio show. In September 2005 Reigning Sound released Home for Orphans through Sympathy for the Record Industry. It featured reworked versions of Too Much Guitar material along with some unreleased tracks. They also recorded and released two live albums in 2005\, Live at Maxwell’s and Live at Goner Records. After a long break from recording under their own name (though Cartwright and the new lineup of bassist David Wayne Gay\, drummer Lance Wille\, and keyboardist Dave Amels backed ex-Shangri-La Mary Weiss on her 2007 album Dangerous Game)\, the band resurfaced in 2009 with a new studio record for In the Red\, Love and Curses. \nIn 2011\, after Cartwright had detoured into touring and recording with a reunited Oblivians\, he assembled a new lineup of Reigning Sound\, with Dave Amels returning on keyboards alongside new members Mike Catanese on guitar\, Benjamin Trokan on bass\, and Mikey Post on drums. Their first project was something out of the ordinary; the auto manufacturer Scion was launching a music-themed promotion campaign and Reigning Sound partnered with them to create an album that would be released by Scion’s ad hoc label\, Scion Audio/Visual. The album\, Abdication … For Your Love\, featured five cuts produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and gave the group a more polished presentation without cutting back on their energy. Reigning Sound emphasized a more mature and soulful approach for their next album. They rolled into Brooklyn’s Daptone Studio to record Shattered\, which became the band’s first release for Merge Records in July 2014. In April 2019\, Merge gave Abdication … For Your Love a mass-market reissue\, with the addition of a bonus track\, “What Did I Tell You.” Greg Cartwright reunited the original Reigning Sound lineup of Alex Greene\, Jeremy Scott\, and Greg Roberson for a short tour in 2020\, and shortly afterwards the band went into Electraphonic Recording in Memphis (augmented by second drummer Graham Winchester) to record a fresh batch of songs. The finished product\, A Little More Time with Reigning Sound\, was released by Merge in May 2021. — Mark Denning

SUMMARY:Those Pretty Wrongs
DESCRIPTION:Those Pretty Wrongs\, featuring Jody Stephens and Luther Russell\, will perform in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $15 \nAfter their self-titled 2016 debut\, Jody Stephens did not assume that he and Luther Russell had a second Those Pretty Wrongs album in them. But that turned out to not be the case. The Memphis-Los Angeles duo released Zed For Zulu in the fall of 2019. After a few shows (including one at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts)\, they toured the U.K. with The Delines. The duo were gearing up for a West Coast U.S. tour with The Jayhawks and an Australia tour when Covid scampered those plans. Now they’re excited to finally resume with another show at The Green Room and the Jayhawks shows at the end of October. Jody and Luther are also working on their third album as well as readying a reissue of their first two LPs. Those Pretty Wrongs will be accompanied by a string section led by Jonathan Kirkscey.
