DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance of psychedelic\, avant-garde jazz by Frog Squad. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nFrog Squad is an outlet for creative expression and sound exploration based in Memphis\, TN. Their songs pull heavily on improvisation within loose structures\, creating a psychedelic\, avant-garde jazz sound. \nThe group curates and arranges songs from artists such as Theloious Monk\, Erik Satie\, George Coleman\, and Horace Silver\, and bandleader David Collins composes eclectic\, original music. Overall\, Frog Squad gently defies the standards of what defines “good music” by composing song templates with experimental elements. \nFrog Squad currently releases a new live recording every six months. In Fall of 2019\, Frog Squad released “Solar System in Peabody\,” a full-length work written by Khari Wynn and David Collins and funded by UrbanArts Commission. The Memphis Flyer has called it “one of the most incredible pieces of music that came across our threshold this year.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition Workshop: Figuratively Speaking
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is held in conjunction with the “Here Is Where We Meet” exhibition on view in the Crosstown Arts West Gallery. \nStudents will be given samples of writing \, and then they’ll create a piece of visual art that represents or reflects that writing sample. Participants will use will use watercolor\, colored pencil\, crumpled paper\, wood\, fabric\, and paint to create 2D or 3D works. These pieces will amass into a collection that will be showcased in a pop-up gallery at the end of the exhibition. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by guitarist Julian Lage and drummer Dave King. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nHailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation\, Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique\, free association\, and a spirit of infinite possibility. \nThough only 31\, the New York-based musician boasts a long\, prolific resume that includes collaborations with Gary Burton\, John Zorn\, Nels Cline\, Chris Eldridge\, Fred Hersch\, David Grisman\, Béla Fleck\, and Charles Lloyd. \nLove Hurts \, which marks his first album to feature drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus)\, sees the GRAMMY-nominated guitarist exploring the American song catalog from a truly unique vantage point\, performing music written by a range of audacious and original artists\, from Roy Orbison to Ornette Coleman\, Jimmy Giuffre to Peter Ivers. \nLove Hurts finds Lage searching through the unfettered artistic freedom of the late 1960s and 1970s\, the ambitious energy and lack of restrictions placed upon artists of all genres providing a guiding light for the sessions. “The covers on this record are like when you move into a new apartment; the last thing you do is hang your pictures on the wall\,” Lage says. “Those pictures define your aesthetic in a way. So the tunes we chose kind of define the aesthetic I love but hadn’t put on a record yet.” \nThe impetus for Lage to delve deeper into his own improvisational influences was initially catalyzed by a series of 2018 live dates that saw him and bassist Jorge Roeder joined by Dave King\, composer and drummer extraordinaire with The Bad Plus. \n“Dave was like the most beautiful curveball being thrown in\,” Lage says. “He’s one of the greatest improvising forces and artistic visionaries. We became close friends over the last couple of years. We played some shows together and I thought\, this is really heavy. Erin Batiste\, Adriana Monsalve\, Robert Goodman\, and Zaire Love will discuss their work in a Pecha Kucha-style artist talk. \nThe Crosstown Arts residency program offers multidisciplinary residencies to visiting and Memphis-based artists and curators\, working in any creative discipline including visual and performing arts\, music\, film\, and writing in all genres. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

DESCRIPTION:Shards of Color and Other Broken Things is an exploration of color and the way it’s manipulated by image and perspective. \nJoy Murray works in a narrative style and uses text in her paintings. She uses many kinds of paper\, watercolor\, acrylic\, and collage. She explores concepts of transformation and the intersection of human life and the natural world. This show will feature many of her pieces focused on disability and sacred transformation of the body. \nTheOuterCircle travels all over the world to expand his vision. His abstract paintings voice subconscious ideas. His pieces have multiple layers and create texture within color. In addition to paint brushes\, he uses everything from his fingers to credit cards to achieve a chaotic balance between color and texture. \nThe show will also feature the music of guitarist Mark Allen. \n

SUMMARY:Sound Kulture: Marco Alexander in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by pop/R&B singer-songwriter Marco Alexander. \nMarco Alexander is an American pop/R&B singer-songwriter and all-around artist. Born in Memphis\, TN\, Marco began his study of music at a young age. Marco grew up watching his mother lead the church choir (while sitting next to the organ player so he wouldn’t get into trouble). \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nGrowing up in a musical family granted Marco the opportunity to travel and study sounds that were unfamiliar to him\, whether it was the sound of beating on pots and pans or listening to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. A versatile musician\, Marco has performed with the National Festival Symphony at Carnegie Hall and in musical theater productions\, such as Thoroughly Modern Millie\, Aida\, and Dreamgirls. \nMarco received a bachelor’s degree in music education and music performance from the University of Memphis\, with a minor in music business. While at the U of M\, he studied with John Chiego. Marco has since performed with more than 23 orchestras nationwide and has participated in national soundtrack tours with Disney and Nintendo. \nMarco released his debut project entitled Friction in 2016. This is a collection of seven songs that mostly feature direct quotes and activities from his life over the past few years. The songs cover subjects such as love\, ambition\, breakups\, and even loss. Be on the lookout for his debut album to be released in the spring of 2020.

DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice.  \nJoin us in Crosstown Theater for the Spotlight Concert Series\, featuring piano quintets by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nThis special performance by Memphis Symphony Orchestra musicians Priscilla Tsai\, Jordan Musgrave\, Ruth Burgess\, Josh Muzzi\, and pianist Tingting Yao features a program of piano quintets “lost in time” by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nGeneral Admission $10 | $5 with student ID\nDoors at 6 pm | Performance at 7 pm \nViolinist Jordan Musgraves writes about the program:\n“We happened upon these pieces in a YouTube channel that features recordings of obscure pieces. These are two that really stand out\, not only because the quality is so good but because when you dig down into why they never became widely known\, it seems such a shame that we don’t know these composers today. \nZdenek Fibich was a contemporary of Smetana and Dvorak and actually the first to ever use Czech folk music in symphonic works (their use of folk song was inspired by Fibich). In his time\, he did have some acclaim\, though he was criticized for not being quite Czech nationalist enough and especially for composing operas in the Wagnerian style. Born of a Czech father\, a forestry official\, and a German-Viennese mother\, he was of mixed heritage and was boycotted by most of the Czech orchestras. His music only survives because of his students\, who championed it. \nDora Pejacovic\, a Hungarian-Croatian composer firmly in the Romantic era\, was slightly later in time. Her music did not reach wide acclaim\, but even in an era of music and society dominated by men\, she had a large output of composition\, starting at age 12. She was mostly a self-taught composer\, but luckily for us\, was encouraged by several other composers who saw her talent and advocated for her music. She might have composed much more but sadly passed away following childbirth at age 39. Today\, there is an ongoing effort to publish her music\, much of which remains unpublished.

The instrumentation includes Alvie Givhan (piano)\, Lance Williams (bass)\, Jim Pettit (drums)\, Sidney Ford (tenor sax)\, Nate Wilensky (trumpet)\, and Howard Lamb (trombone). \nFormidably\, a protégé of the late tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards\, Lisa Nobumoto carries the lyrics to some of his most notable originals\, including “Sunset Eyes” and “Going Home\,” the former being the song that laid the groundwork for Clifford Brown’s first solo which gained him worldwide recognition. \nTeddy Edwards is a name well-known to serious be-bop fans. His style follows the true and authentic genre of jazz that heralded names like alto sax player Charlie Parker and the noted trumpeter Howard McGhee. \nIn fact\, it is said that when Charlie Parker left New York to record in Los Angeles\, he went to find Teddy Edwards. Teddy Edwards became the first tenor saxophonist in history to record a be-bop solo on tenor saxophone with “Up In Dodo’s Room” in 1946 on the Dial Label. \nThis exciting musical adventure into the music of Teddy Edwards will include a variety of his instrumentals and be-bop solos emoting from Memphis’ best jazz musicians.

March’s performance features guitarist Paul Asbell in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nFrom his early years playing blues on Chicago’s South Side to his present multi-faceted career based out of northern Vermont\, Paul Abell has earned an underground reputation as a true “musician’s musician.” He has played and recorded with Muddy Waters\, John Lee Hooker\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Lightnin’ Hopkins\, Otis Rush\, Magic Sam\, Earl Hooker\, Lightnin’ Slim\, Paul Butterfield\, Sam Lay\, Pops Staples\, Donny Hathaway\, and numerous others while in his hometown of Chicago\, Illinois. \nPaul moved to Vermont\, where he still lives\, in the heady “back-to-the-land” days of 1971. He soon started playing and recording with a head-spinningly diverse array of artists\, including Big Mama Thornton\, singer-songwriters Paul Siebel\, Jim Ringer\, Mary McCaslin\, and Rosalie Sorrells\, jazz greats Jon Hendricks\, Bobby McFerrin\, Sonny Stitt\, and Nick Brignola\, and many others. In 1978\, seeking an outlet for more personal musical visions\, he formed Kilimanjaro\, and recorded two award-winning albums for Philo Records. \nSoon after\, the band performed at the Kool Jazz Festival at SPAC\, the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland\, and numerous national tours and concert dates. Kilimanjaro served as backup band on lengthy national tours with Esther Satterfield\, and Paul Butterfield\, with whom they played the Montreal Jazz Festival\, and the Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. \nIn 1981\, Paul and other members of Kilimanjaro joined forces with a legendary saxophonist and blues singer to form Big Joe Burrell and the Unknown Blues Band. Together\, they performed at many festivals\, including the Kool Jazz Festival\, toured Russia\, Holland\, and Canada\, and served as back-up band for Marva Wright\, Kenny Neal\, W.C. Clark\, and others. The UBB remained a Northeast regional favorite for over 20 years\, until Big Joe’s passing in 2005. \nPersonal performance credits in recent years include David Bromberg\, Betty Carter\, Joshua Redman\, James Carter\, Kermit Ruffins\, Michael Ray\, the Sun Ra Arkestra\, The Wild Magnolias\, John Stowell\, guitar wunderkind Julian Lage\, Dave Grippo\, and former students Trey Anastasio and Nick Cassarino. Paul has taught guitar for over 45 years. Private instruction remains a favored format\, but he has also taught for several decades on a university level\, including positions at Dartmouth College\, St. Michael’s College\, and presently at Middlebury College and the University Of Vermont.

Larson has been described by critic Howard Reich of The Chicago-Tribune as “a player for whom the word ‘prodigious’ was coined.” Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen called him “a saxophonist who brings Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner to mind\,” and Nate Chinen of The New York Times said he is “the sort of jazz musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success.” Larson has garnered numerous awards that distinguish him as one of the most promising artists of his generation. \nAs a student\, Larson was a member of virtually every national program dedicated to showcasing excellence in young jazz talent\, including The Grammy Band\, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra\, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead\, YoungArts Jazz Fellows\, Telluride Student All-Stars\, and Jazz Band of America\, among others. Upon graduating from University High School in 2008\, Adam moved to New York City to pursue his BM and MM in Jazz Performance on full scholarship from The Manhattan School\, where he graduated with honors as a Master’s student and the recipient of the William H. Borden Award for Outstanding Performance in Jazz in 2014. \nLarson has released five albums: one for Ropeadope Records\, two under the Inner Circle Music label\, and two produced independently. Larson’s most recent recording “Second City” received a four-star rating from Downbeat magazine\, was listed as one of the best releases of 2017 in both Downbeat and Jazziz Magazine\, and was prominently featured in several publications. Larson’s fifth record\, “Listen With Your Eyes\,” was released on Ropeadope Records on September 6th\, 2019. \nLarson keeps an active schedule with his own groups and as a sideman\, having performed at several venues across the U.S.\, including The Jazz Standard\, Birdland\, The 55 Bar\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Note\, The Village Vanguard\, Smalls\, Jazz at The Bistro\, The Jazz Estate\, The Jazz Showcase\, and several others. \nBeyond maintaining an active touring and recording schedule\, Larson continues to be a sought-after clinician and master class presenter at several high schools and universities across the country and beyond\, including appearances at HKU Conservatory-Utrecht\, University of Iowa\, Drake University\, University of Northern Iowa\, Temple University\, Yale\, Manhattan School of Music\, and University of North Texas among many others. DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nJoin us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance of trumpeter Jamie Branch’s debut album\, “Fly or Die.” \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nA mainstay of the Chicago jazz scene and an active recent addition to the New York scene\, Jaimie Branch is an avant-garde trumpeter known for her “ghostly sounds\,” says The New York Times\, and for “sucker punching” crowds straight from the jump off\, says Time Out. \nHer classical training and “unique voice capable of transforming every ensemble of which she is a part” (Jazz Right Now) has contributed to a wide range of projects not only in jazz but also punk\, noise\, indie rock\, electronic\, and hip-hop. Branch’s prolific as-of-yet underexposed work as a composer and a producer\, as well as a sideman for the likes of William Parker\, Matana Roberts\, TV on the Radio\, and Spoon\, is all on display in her debut record Fly or Die — a dynamic 35-minute ride that dares listeners to open their minds to music that knows no genre\, no gender\, no limits. \n

DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice.  \nJoin us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for Music for Cello and Jazz Trio\, including works by Claude Bolling\, David Baker\, and more. \nFeaturing Alisa Horn (cello)\, Maeve Brophy (piano)\, Tom Lonardo (drums)\, and Tim Goodwin (bass). \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nAbout the Performers:\nAlisa Horn is a freelance cellist and loves performing and teaching a wide variety of musical genres from classical to jazz to rock and beyond. Alisa studied with Professor Peter Spurbeck at the University of Memphis\, received her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Michigan with Anthony Elliott\, and her Master of Music in Cello Performance from Northwestern University with Hans Jensen. Along with jazz legends trumpeter Marvin Stamm and pianist Bill Mays\, Alisa is a member of The Inventions Trio which performs a fusion of jazz and classical repertoire. The Trio has toured and released three albums\, including the diverse works of Bill Evans\, Bill Mays\, Villa-Lobos\, and Miles Davis. On Broadway\, Alisa has performed in many shows including Sunday in the Park with George\, An American in Paris\, If/Then\, and Next to Normal. \nMaeve Brophy gave her first solo recital at age 9 and made her orchestral debut at age 15. She has a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University. Maeve has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells\, England\, the Amalfi Coast\, Kiev\, Ukraine\, New York\, San Francisco\, Seattle\, Aspen\, Nashville\, and Memphis. Maeve is former adjunct faculty of the Blair School of Music and Belmont University in Nashville and currently lives in Memphis where she works as a freelance collaborative pianist\, soloist\, and piano teacher. \nTom Lonardo grew up playing drums in his father’s dance band. He holds a MM from the University of Mississippi and attended the Berklee College of Music studying with Alan Dawson. He has played music all his life including gigs with Mose Allison\, Di Anne Price\, Joe Restivo 4\, 3rdMan\, and Dog Police. \nTim Goodwin is very active in the recording industry and performs across the United States as a bassist. He has performed with numerous jazz artists including Lee Konitz\, George Colemen\, Pepper Adams\, Art Farmer\, Michele LeGrand\, Jon Hendricks\, Phineas Newborn\, Mose Allison\, and many others. Mr. Goodwin was bassist of a trio which was selected to participate in the Kennedy Center “Jazz Ambassadors” program to present jazz performances and lectures around the world. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Miami and Miami-Dade Community College and joined the University of Memphis as a faculty member in 1984.

DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nSeijun Suzuki was a journeyman director for Nikkatsu\, one of the oldest Japanese film production companies in existence. Suzuki eventually went from journeyman to auteur\, slipping weird elements into what should have been run-of-the-mill Yakuza fare. Finally Suzuki made the legendary Branded to Kill (R.I.P.\, Joe Shishido) for Nikkatsu and was fired! \nSuzuki persevered and made more films\, but Crosstown Arts is going back to his roots with a screening of Tokyo Knights. Pre-dating the idea of “millennials\,” Tokyo Knights  is about a boy named Koji who is good at\, well\, everything. DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nThis workshop is held in conjunction with the “STUDIOS” exhibition on view in the Crosstown Arts East Gallery. \nUsing Keiko Gonzalez’s work in “STUDIOS” as inspiration\, participants will be encouraged to paint without a particular destination in mind. Drawing from Keiko’s style of “circular arguments that never seek literal translations\,” participants will broaden their minds and expand on their own internal philosophies through the medium of painting. These pieces will be showcased in a pop-up gallery at the end of the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts presents Women of Folk — performances by the Xaris Waltman Trio and Bailey Bigger Band. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nBorn and raised in small-town Arkansas\, just outside of the musically historic city of Memphis\, Tennessee\, Bailey has always had a passion for songwriting. She first picked up a guitar at only nine years old and began to write songs within the first week of playing. \nAt age 17\, Bailey won “Memphis’ Best Song Of 2017” for her original song\, “Wildflower.” Since then\, she has performed at many festivals and venues from Celebrate Memphis (being one of 4 headliners)\, AmericanaFest\, and many more. She has recorded at Dark Horse Studios\, Sun Studios\, and Ardent Studios. Bailey has also been recognized as a top ten up-and-coming Americana artist you should be listening to by Memphis Magazine. \nFollowing Bailey’s first record “Closer to Home\,” she released her second EP\, “Between The Pages.” This EP was engineered by Jessica Willis and released by the University of Memphis record label\, BlueTOMRecords. \nXaris Waltman’s mother claims she was humming tunes before she could talk. As a young child\, Xaris picked up her dad’s guitar and discovered a deep connection to folk songs. Xaris loved how the songs had lives of their own and have been telling the same stories for generations. Xaris still feels the same way. Relaying these stories to audiences during her shows makes her feel like she’s doing something bigger than herself. \nIn 2019\, at nineteen years old\, Xaris released an album of old-time songs titled “Under The Willow” with BigTone Records. Right out of high school\, Xaris began traveling the country solo; just a girl and her guitar. Playing listening rooms\, living rooms\, and festivals\, she has captured the people of small-town America’s ears with her melodious\, high-toned voice.
